Being a primary producer, Microphytobenthos （MPB） play an important role in the benthic ecosystem of mangrove swamps. The temporal and vertical distribution of MPB biomass, expressed as chlorophyll a （Chl a）, was investigated in mangrove swamps on the Qi＇ao island and the Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve, Guangdong Province, South China. Both locations are situated in the Zhujiang （Pearl River） Estuary. For each location, bi-monthly sampling was carried out at four sites during low tide period. Except one site on the Qi＇ao Island, which was in Phragrnites australis marsh, all sites were in mangrove swamps. The Chl a concentration in surface （0-1 cm） sediment ranged from 0.2/2g/cm3 to 8.3 #g/cm3 in the Qi＇ao Island and from 2.1/zg/cm3 to 15.6/2g/cm3 in the Futian Mangrove Reserve. The peak Chl a concentration occurred in winter or early spring, while the lowest Chl a concentration, with a value of about one quarter of the peak, was observed in summer or early autumn. The vertical distribution of Chl a concentration exhibited an exponential decline with depth, which indicated a muddy sediment with high organic matter, and the slope of the curve was positively related to Chl a concentration in the surface sediment. The MPB biomass of the Qi＇ao Island was significantly lower than that of the Futian Mangrove Reserve. Our results suggest that the overlaying water quality might influence the MPB biomass in surface sediments.

Growing evidence suggests that exercise can provide neuroprotection by improving mitochondrial quality control (MQC) on the aged brain. Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling responsiveness declines with aging. However， whether AMPK plays a role in the exercise-mediated improvement of memory and MQC in the aged hippocampus remains to be established. AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole 4-carboxamide ribonucleoside)， a pharmacological agonist of AMPK， has been proposed to be an exercise mimetic recently. However， it has not been clarified whether AICAR could mimic the effects of exercise on the aged hippocampus through improvement of MQC. In this study， AICAR (AMPK agonist) and Compound C (AMPK inhibitor) were used to investigate if AMPK plays a key role in exercise-induced improvement of MQC and if AICAR could act as an exercise mimetic through improvement of MQC in aged hippocampus. Both exercise and AICAR improved the memory of aged mice and increased AMPK phosphorylation in the aged hippocampus. Exercise， but not AICAR， improved mitochondrial respiratory function in the aged hippocampus and increased the Microtubule associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) II/LC3 I ratio and the protein expression of LC3 II and Autophagy Related Protein 7 (ATG7) in the lysate of whole hippocampal tissue. Both exercise and AICAR increased the ratio of LC3 II/LC3 I and the protein expression of LC3 II in the mitochondrial fractions of the hippocampus. Regarding mitochondrial dynamics， neither exercise training nor AICAR changed the protein level of Mitofusin2 (Mfn2). Exercise， but not AICAR， increased the protein level of Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1). Furthermore， both exercise training and AICAR increased the protein level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α)， a modulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. This research covers the Intel? Direct Sparse Solver for Clusters, the software that implements a direct method for solving the Ax = b equation with sparse symmetric matrix A on a cluster. This method, researched by Intel, is based on Cholesky decomposition and could be considered as extension of functionality PARDISO from Intel??MKL. To achieve an efficient work balance on a large number of processes, the so-called “multifrontal” approach to Cholesky decomposition is implemented. This software implements parallelization that is based on nodes of the dependency tree and uses MPI, as well as parallelization inside a node of the tree that uses OpenMP directives. The article provides a high-level description of the algorithm to distribute the work between both computational nodes and cores within a single node, and between different computational nodes. A series of experiments shows that this implementation causes no growth of the computational time and decreases the amount of memory needed for the computations.

Heat management must be maintained within the mine working environment to minimize stress on equipment and personnel. The issue is a growing concern as mines continue to expand in size, depth and infrastructure. Heat management is a concern as it relates to both heat sensitive equipment and more importantly the health and safety of the workers found within the mine. Proper application of engineering protocols and work practice controls will have a direct impact on the health and safety of workers and increased productivity. Using continuous monitoring stations placed in strategic locations throughout the mine to capture the environmental conditions, various strategies can be used in the planning and prevention of potential hazard exposure. Economic analysis is used to select the most feasible strategy for heat stress control. This paper presents a step by step methodology that may be considered by ventilation specialists to effectively implement a heat management control system. A case study based on a detailed heat management assessment conducted for a potash mine in Saskatchewan, Canada is presented.

An RF compensated cylindrical Langmuir probe system has been developed and used to characterize an RF capacitive two temperature plasma discharge in a stochastic mode. The novelty of the work presented here is the use of the driven electrode （cathode） without ground shield. Measurements of the electron energy distribution function （EEDF） and plasma parameters were achieved under the following conditions： 50 W of RF power and 5× 10-2 mbar of argon pressure. The probe measurements are performed at 3 cm above the electrode and the probe was shifted radially （r direction） from the center （r = 0 cm） of the inter-electrodes region towards the chamber wall （R = 10.75 cm）. The results show that the EEDF is bi-Maxwellian and its shape remains the same through the scanned region. The farther the probe from the central region, the lower the EEDF maximum. The plasma density is observed to decrease according to a Gaussian profile along the radial direction and falls to 50% of its maximum when close to the cathode edge （r = 5.5 cm）. At the same time the effective electron temperature remains constant for r〈4 cm and increases for r≥4 cm. The high-temperature and low-temperature electrons＇ densities and temperatures are also discussed in the article.

Synthesis of novel β-amino ketones containing a p-aminobenzoic acid moiety and evaluation of their antidiabetic activities

The synthesis of two series of [3-amino ketones containing a p-aminobenzoic acid moiety （TM.1 and TM-2） using a modified protocol of the Mannich reaction is reported. The molecular structures of a total of tweenty three new target compounds were characterized by ~H NMR, 1~C NMR, ESI-MS and HR-MS. Subsequently, their antidiabetic activities were screened in vitro. The c^-glucodase inhibition （c^-GI） activity of compound le reached a remarkable level of 66.50%. The peroxisome proliferator- activated receptor （PPAR） relative activation activities of six compounds are above 80%, and in particular 2i displays an un- precedentedly high PPAR of 130.91%. The structure-activity relationships of the compounds were established. 2i is also sub- ject to further in-depth investigation.

Brain size and weight vary tremendously in the animal kingdom. It has been suggested that brain structural develop- ment must evolve balanced between the advantages of dealing with greater social challenges mad the energetic costs of maintain- ing and developing larger brains. Here we ask if interspecific differences in cooperative behaviour （i.e. cleaning behaviour） are related to brain weight variations in four close-related species of Labrid fish： two are obligatory cleanerfish throughout their en- tire life （Labroides dimidiatus and L. bicolor）, one facultative cleaner fish Labropsis australis and one last species that never en- gage in cleaning Labrichthys unilineatus. We first search for the link between the rate of species＇ cooperation and its relative brain weight, and finally, if the degree of social complexity and cooperation are reflected in the weight of its major brain sub- structures. Overall, no differences were found in relative brain weight （in relation to body weight） across species. Fine-scale dif- ferences were solely demonstrated for the facultative cleaner L. australis, at the brainstem level. Furthermore, data visual exami- nation indicates that the average cerebellum and brainstem weights appear to be larger for L. dimidiatus. Because variation was solely found at specific brain areas （such as cerebellum and brainstem） and not for the whole brain weight values, it suggests that species social-ecological and cognitive demands may be directly contributing to a selective investment in relevant brain areas. This study provides first preliminary evidence that links potential differences in cognitive ability in cooperative behaviour to how these may mediate the evolution of brain structural development in non-mammal vertebrate groups .

Turkey wattle is a by-product generated during slaughter,which has a large amount of connective tissue and is a potential source of glycosaminoglycans(GAGs).This study aimed to extract GAGs from the turkey wattle(Meleagris gallopavos)and investigate its anticoagulant activity,and its cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity in tumor *** sulfate(CS-4 and CS-6)and dermatan sulfate(DS)present in the F-VII fraction and hyaluronic acid(HA)in the F-V fraction were *** HA showed a high molecular weight(1.0×10^(6) Da)and an apparent cytotoxic/antiproliferative effect against human hepatoma cells.F-VII fraction has an apparent cytotoxic/antiproliferative effect against renal adenoma cells and anticoagulant potential in *** results achieved in this study demonstrated that wattle,a by-product of turkey industrialization,has the potential to be valued as a raw material for the extraction of GAGs with bioactive properties.

Background. Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is the most frequent neoplasm inpatients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although many studies on KS epidemiology have been performed in other countries, few have been carried out in Brazil despite the high incidence of AIDS. Methods. One hundred and seven KS patients seen in *** Paulo, Brazil, between August 1995 and November 1998 were studied. The patients were followed for 1 year with assessment of the immunologic status, improvement of the lesions, treatment, and causes of death at the end of this period. Results. KS occurred mainly in men (94.4%) with a mean age of 37 years, and 25.2%of these patients were found to be human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive throughKS. HIV was acquiredmainly through homosexual contact. The patients presented an average of 15.9 KS lesions at the first visit and the mean duration of KS lesions before the first visit was 15.5 months. The clinical presentation was predominantly papules and plaques, and 33.6%presented with mucosal and/or visceral disease. KS affected mainly the lower limbs. The mean time since the diagnosis of HIV infection was 42.4 months. The CD4+cell count was lower than 200 cell/mm3 in 60.8%of patients, but patients with a complete response showed an improvement in immune status after 1 year. Patients who did not show progression received a protease inhibitor as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Patients treated exclusively with HAART presented a complete response (61.6%), partial response (23%) or progression (15.4%) of KS. Conclusions. An improvement in immune status and the use of HAART were the most important prognostic features.

Taken together, these reports do not provide strong evidence in favor of either internal fixation or arthroplasty over the other relative to mortality in the treatment of intracapsular fracture of the proximal femur. However, they do suggest a higher rate of reoperations in those receiving internal fixation compared with arthroplasty. Differing patient characteristics at baseline make direct comparisons difficult.
