The great challenges of sustainable development highlight an urgent need to systematically understand the mech-anisms linking humans and *** and environmental sciences are a broad and practical discipline focused on coupled human and natural *** aim to study the formation and evolution of resources in the earth system,the drivers of various environmental problems,processes and relationships between resources and the environment,particularly under the combined impacts of natural conditions and human *** major resources and environmental problems drive the discipline development;international science programmes guide the direction of the discipline;interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary integration promotes new branches of the discipline;and technological progress results in a research paradigm *** the critical research re-quirements of strengthening trans-and interdisciplinarity,breaking through the key technology,targeting major environmental and disaster issues,and supporting sustainable development,nine critical scientific issues should be focused on climate change impact and adaptation,petroleum and mineral resources,water cycle and water re-sources,soil and land resources,ecosystems,remote sensing and geographic information science,environmental science and technology,disaster risk,and global and regional sustainable *** to enhancing funding systems,improve talent cultivation,develop scientific platforms,and strength international cooperation are provided in this study to support scientific *** promotion of Resources and environmental Sci-ences enables a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of economic development and environmental changes relevant to assure a more sustainable global development.

This paper reviews the major contributions made by Norwegian scientists to Arctic environmental sciences since the 1880s. The review begins with the first International Polar Year （IPY） in 1882-83. It then considers the 1890s to 1920s with the scientific expeditions focusing on ocean and sea ice conditions of Nansen, Amundsen and H. Sverdrup, and the mapping of the Queen Elizabeth Islands by Otto Sverdrup and colleagues. The period from 1911 to the mid-1920s also witnessed annual expeditions to Svalbard led by Adolf Hoel. The 1930s to 1945 period encompassed the Second International Polar Year when Arctic weather stations were established or maintained. The time interval post-World War II to 2000 witnessed major advances made possible by technical and organizational innovations. The establishment of the Norwegian Polar Institute in 1948 led to extensive research on the glaciers and snow cover in the Svalbard archipelago and to oceanographic and sea ice research in the Barents Sea and Arctic Ocean. Remote sensing methods began to be widely used from the 1980s. The new millennium saw the undertaking of the third IPY and a shift to multinational projects. New fields such as ocean-ice-atmosphere variability became active and there was much attention to high-latitude climate change in the context of global warming.

Accurate source apportionment of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in soil nearby petrochemical industries prevailing globally,is critical for preventing ***,in the process,seasonal effect on contamination pathways and accumulation of soil VOCs is often ***,Yanshan Refining-Chemical Integration Park,including a carpet,refining,synthetic rubber,and two synthetic resin zones,was selected for *** variations resulted in a gradual decrease of 31 VOCs in soil from winter to summer.A method of dry deposition resistance model coupling partitioning coefficient model was created,revealing that dry deposition by gas phase was the primary pathway for VOCs to enter soil in winter and spring,with 100 times higher fux than by particle *** profiles for five zones were built by gas sampling with distinct substance indicators screened,which were used for positive matrix factorization factors *** of the five zones were 14.9%,20.8%,13.6%,22.1%,and 28.6%in winter and 33.4%,12.5%,10.7%,24.9%,and 18.5%in spring,*** variation in the soil sorption capacity of VOCs causes inter-seasonal differences in *** better correlation between dry deposition capacity and soil storage of VOCs made root mean square and mean absolute errors decrease averagely by 8.8%and 5.5%in winter compared to *** study provides new perspectives and methods for the source apportionment of soil VOCs contamination in industrial sites.

Earth and environmental sciences play key roles in clarifying the mechanisms of generation,formation,and changes through imaging 2D/3D structures,physical/chemical properties,and interactions of *** imaging can contribute to deep understanding of the *** general,such imaging uses irregularly spaced sample data which mostly originate from field surveys,borehole investigations,well-loggings,and core *** data are limited in the amount and *** addition,Earth and environmental materials tend to be heterogeneous in structures and properties and show nonlinear behaviors due to geologic discontinuities such as fault and ***,sophisticated spatial modeling techniques for sample data,which can consider the heterogeneity and nonlinearity,are indispensable to accurate *** this background,the author’s research group has tried to improve the spatial modeling by developing several techniques with applications to geological and environmental *** of the spatial modeling techniques has been proved by various case studies on characterization of metal deposits,geothermal reservoirs,and groundwater systems;quality mapping of limestone and clay;rock fracture simulation;detection of spatio-temporal changes of water quality;and surface material mapping at an active ***,neural network,and spline-based methods are used for the modeling depending on the characteristics of sample data and the complexity of study region,because each method has own superiority and disadvantage from the *** on the author’s experiences over ten years,those approaches and developed methods will be presented,and also the plausibility of obtained spatial models will be discussed.

Fragmented data suggest that bisphenol AF(BPAF),a chemical widely used in a variety of products,might have potential impacts on the ***,we employed male neonatal mice following maternal exposure to explore the effects of low-dose BPAF on hypothalamic development by *** found that maternal exposure to approximately 50μg/(kg·day)BPAF from postanal day(PND)0 to PND 15 altered the hypothalamic transcriptome,primarily involving the pathways and genes associated with extracellular matrix(ECM)and intercellular adhesion,neuroendocrine regulation,and neurological *** RNA analysis confirmed the changes in the expression levels of concerned ***,we further revealed that low-dose BPAF posed a stimulatory impact on pro-opiomelanocortin(POMC)neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus and induced the browning of inguinal white adipose *** findings indicate that developmental exposure to low-dose BPAF could interfere with hypothalamic development and thereby lead to alterations in the ***,5000μg/(kg·day)BPAF caused slighter,non-significant or even inverse alterations than the low dose of 50μg/(kg·day),displaying a dose-independent *** observations suggest that the the dose-independent effects of BPAF might be associated with oxidative stress and inflammatory responses caused by the high ***,our study highlights a risk of low-dose BPAF to human neuroendocrine regulation and metabolism.
