Eddy current array(ECA) has enhanced the practice of flaw detection in the aerospace industry through expanded coverage areas, reduced inspection time, improved detectability, repeatability, and data recording. However, because ECA detectability is inversely proportional to scan speed, the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of today’s ECA techniques limits their ability to detect the very small flaws and loss of material that can occur in many aerospace inspections such as friction stir welds and multi-layer structures susceptible to corrosion and fatigue cracking. Minimum flaw size and required data density are the main factors affecting scan speed when using eddy current array. As speed increases, the SNR decreases, therefore the minimum flaw size becomes larger. zetec introduces exceptional SNR in an eddy current array instrument, eliminating the need to sacrifice scan speed for superior flaw detectability.

Over the last 15 years, phased array technology has dramatically changed the face of ultrasonic non-destructive testing. This now mature and widely adopted technology allows highly efficient inspections to be carried out on critical components in aerospace, oil ＆ gas, heavy industry and power generating plants. The Iterative Time Reversal technique is a promising application of phased array technology. It consists off a real-time adaptation of the beam forming parameters, to compensate for varying probe-to-component misalignment conditions. This is particularly useful during inspections of CFRP components after manufacturing. This paper will illustrate how state-of-the art phased array units controlled by UltraVision? can be used to apply the Iterative Time Reversal technique in order to improve coverage and detection capability of ultrasonic beams for various CFRP geometries. Examples will compare the performance of Iterative Time Reversal with traditional beam forming, and demonstrate the improved behavior towards geometry variations and positioning tolerances.

The ultrasonic examination of cast austenitic stainless steel（CASS） components and welds has been a challenging issue for the nuclear NDE industry for more than three decades. Considerations about life-time extension of ageing plants have renewed the interest for this topic. Over the last 10 years, the introduction of low-frequency phased array probes and high-performance data acquisition systems have led to considerable improvements of the UT inspection capability for CASS components. In parallel, critical flaw sizes have been established and documented in ASME Code Case N-838, providing valuable input for realistic flaw acceptance criteria. This paper will give a summary of the results of research programs in the USA and the on-going regulatory efforts. In addition, results will be presented from inspection trials on practice mock-ups, in the framework of a recent technique validation program（round-robin trial） conducted by EPRI.

Generation III+nuclear power plants,especially those with capacity over 1100 MWe,implement considerably larger forged components than previous plant *** manufacturing process requires new non-destructive inspection techniques to ensure the quality of these critical ***,due to the long sound paths,conventional ultrasonic（UT）techniques cannot provide adequate detectability of the reference reflectors required by the existing ***,some standards require multiple angle beams to be applied in addition to the straight beam inspection,and this leads to long inspection *** innovative concept of a semi-flexible 2D array probe has been introduced to overcome the limitations of conventional UT *** performance of this new probe type has been extensively validated on representative test ***,dedicated software tools have been developed to facilitate the generation and use of DGS sizing diagrams for a wide range of conventional and phased array probes,including semi-flexible 2D array *** tools help heavy forging manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with existing codes based on the Equivalent Reflector Size（ERS）evaluation *** paper addresses the implementation and validation of this new inspection solution for large rotor *** simulations,as well as detectability measurements and data acquisitions on representative test specimens will be presented,and compared with conventional UT *** aspects of the hardware and software specification will be addressed,as well as the potential reduction of the total inspection time.

The first generation of portable phased array UT units has hit the market in the early 2000’s. Their introduction and adoption has been a game changer for ultrasonic inspections of critical components in oil ＆ gas, aerospace, heavy industry and power generation plants. Over the last 5 years, several manufacturers have developed systems that offer far more power and performance than first generation units: larger data file size, better amplitude resolution, faster data acquisition rate and advanced on-board data analysis. Due to the improved efficiency in preparation, acquisition, analysis ＆ reporting of inspections, and to the availability of software tools that ensure code-compliance, phased array UT is now a mature and accepted technology. The next technological step involves Full Matrix Capture（FMC） and advanced focusing algorithms, e.g. Total Focusing Method（TFM）. This new technology is already available, and efforts are on-going to make it truly industrially deployable: inspection speed, calibration tools, comprehensive software package, … An important phase in the industrial adoption of these promising techniques is the experimental validation of the improvement in flaw detection and characterization capability that they can provide. This paper will investigate how advanced focusing techniques implemented on a new generation of phased array UT systems can complement and enhance the existing inspection capability. Experimental results from various inspection configurations with realistic flaws will be shown.

Phased array UT examination of austenitic welds（homogeneous stainless steel welds,dissimilar metal welds）has been applied and formally qualified for in-service inspection in nuclear power plants for more than 10 *** to more stringent regulations on the use of radiography in many countries all over the world,various other industries show increased interest in phased array UT as an alternative volumetric inspection technique,even for austenitic *** most of the elements of a"successful"inspection solution are known to UT experts,on-site deployment of the required inspection techniques is still perceived as laborious and expensive,because it typically requires high-end equipment and software,or multiple software *** paper will show how dual matrix array probes and wedge assemblies can be easily set-up using a portable,but high-power phased array unit and its embedded software,thus allowing for effective and robust austenitic weld *** performance of well-chosen dual matrix array assemblies will be illustrated with ultrasonic data from practical trials on various representative austenitic weld specimens containing artificial and realistic *** will be shown how the embedded software solely supports all steps of the examination process,including comprehensive visualization of the data,and efficient data analysis.

This paper will describe the experience of inspecting steam generator tubing by applying a single pass probe that contains alternative sensor configurations utilizing independent examination techniques where analysis is performed by automated analysis *** dual pass probe contains a traditional bobbin sensor plus an array sensor set,providing alternate techniques and alternate analysis methods in examining the steam generator *** approach provides independence and confirmation on a single pass examination of *** single pass provides benefits in fewer man hours for the examination,lower dose received,and reduced radiation waste compared with the traditional approach where the examination is performed using a primary examination technique for the majority of the inspection scope followed by a second probe insertion to perform a secondary examination technique for special areas of interest or confirmation of the primary *** addition to the savings in man hours and accumulated dose,further benefits are realized through the application of dual techniques through the examination scope providing a more comprehensive examination of the steam generator *** analysis is used to leverage the results between the two independent techniques to provide more resolved answer and perform analysis at a production rate to keep pace with the acquisition of data.
