Microarray-based analysis for hepatocellular carcinoma: From gene expression profiling to new challenges

Accumulation of mutations and alterations in the expression of various genes result in carcinogenesis,and the development of microarray technology has enabled us to identify the comprehensive gene expression alterations in *** studies have applied this technology for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),and identified a number of candidate genes useful as biomarkers in cancer staging,prediction of recurrence and prognosis,and treatment *** of these target molecules have been used to develop new serum diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets against HCC to benefit ***,we compared gene expression profiling data with classification based on clinicopathological features,such as hepatitis viral infection or liver cancer *** next era of gene expression analysis will require systematic integration of expression profiles with other types of biological information,such as genomic locus,gene function,and sequence *** have reported integration between expression profiles and locus information,which is effective in detecting structural genomic abnormalities,such as chromosomal gains and losses,in which we showed that gene expression profiles are subject to chromosomal ***,array-based comparative genomic hybridization analysis and allelic dosage analysis using genotyping arrays for HCC were also reviewed,with comparison of conventional methods.

Deformation of Mild Steel Plate with Linear Cracks due to Horizontal Compression

Deformation of mild steel plate with linear crocks due to horizontal compression is investigated by the use of 2-D FEM （two-dimensional finite element method） in the case of plane strain. The compound plate has a notch at the upper surface, which links to oblique downward initial defects. The compound plate roughly models the oceanic plate （Plate l） sinking under the continental plate （Plate 2） near the trough or trench in Japan. A horizontal compression is exerted at the left side of Plate 1. The deformation of the compound plate shows that the notch and upper surface of Plate 2 subside if a downward tension is added to the right side of Plate 1.

JOGMEC （Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation） has conducted exploration and research in Japan＇s EEZ （exclusive economic zone） from fiscal year 2008, under contract by the METI （Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry）, for the commercialization of SMS （Seafloor Massive Sulfide）. As there is currently no commercial mining precedent of SMS, it is necessary to consider the potential impacts of mining on the surrounding environment, and to promote long term sustainable projects. In particular, due to the existence of specific chemosynthetic ecosystems and unique biological communities around the SMS area, both quantitative evaluations of potential environmental impacts and consequent environmental conservation strategies, are necessary in order to avoid and or minimize the potential detrimental effects to the ecosystem, as much as possible. The environmental research programs consist of baseline surveys, environmental impact modeling, and methodological concepts which will be applied to conserve biodiversity. In this paper, we will primarily provide an overview of the project conducted by JOGMEC during 2008-2012.
