Phase and chemical state tuning of FeNi oxides for oxygen evolution reaction

Advancing and deploying the Fe Ni-based catalyst,the state-of-the-art pre-electrocatalysts,for oxygen evolution reactions(OER)still suffer from unclear chemical state correlation to the catalytic ability,as evidenced by the variedly reported performance for the different Fe Ni ***,we contributed the phase and redox chemical states tuning of Fe Ni oxides by the surface microenvironment regulation for the OER catalysis that was realized by the urea-assisted pyrolysis and molybdenum-doping technique by integrating molybdenum into the iron–nickel metal-organic *** by the complicated and compromised atmosphere,namely,the oxidation state driven by the Mo doping and reduction ability induced by the urea-assisted pyrolysis,could transfer confined Fe Ni oxides to hybrid phases of Fe_(2)O_(3)and FeNi_(3)alloy,and the resultant compromised chemical states by the charge redistribution imparted very high electrocatalytic performance for OER compared with the control *** insitu Raman spectroscopy and post-XPS analysis confirmed the facile Fe/Ni oxyhydroxide active phase formation resulting from the proper phase and chemical states,and theoretical analysis disclosed the microenvironment regulation resulting in the charge redistribution forming the electron accumulation and depletion sites to accelerate the oxygen-species to oxyhydroxide-species transformation and enhance the electronic state density near the Fermi level by significantly reducing the energy *** work not only showed the importance of surface chemical state tunning that can basically answer the varied performance of Fe Ni catalysts but also revealed an effective approach for fine-tuning their catalytic properties.

An unexpected approach to enhance specific surface area and mesopore amount of polyaniline by Zn doping

Poly-p-anisidine could be easily fabricated via the oxidative polymerization reaction of p-anisidine using H2O2as the green oxidant. It was unexpectedly found that zinc doping could significantly improve the adsorption ability of the material versus heavy metals such as Pb, Cu,Pd, Ag and Hg. Results of nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments demonstrated that Zn doping could enhance the specific surface area and mesopore amount of the prepared material, which might facilitate its absorption to metals. This work not only provides a novel material for the treatment of heavy metal-polluted water but also leads to a nice mesoporous catalyst support for environment protection and organic synthesis, i.e. the Zn-doped poly-panisidine can be employed as the catalyst support to prepare Cu@PANI-OMe/Zn or Pd@PANI-OMe/Zn for the oxidative degradation reaction of phenol or Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions, respectively. It discloses a new strategy for fabricating the mesoporous polyaniline materials with profound application potential.

Factors resisting protein adsorption on hydrophilic/hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers terminated with hydrophilic hydroxyl groups

The hydroxyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer(OH-SAM),as a surface resistant to protein adsorption,exhibits substantial potential in applications such as ship navigation and medical implants,and the appropriate strategies for designing anti-fouling surfaces are ***,we employ molecular dynamics simulations and alchemical free energy calculations to systematically analyze the factors influencing resistance to protein adsorption on the SAMs terminated with single or double OH groups at three packing densities(∑=2.0 nm^(-2),4.5 nm^(-2),and 6.5 nm^(-2)),*** the first time,we observed that the compactness and order of interfacial water enhance its physical barrier effect,subsequently enhancing the resistance of SAM to protein ***,the spatial hindrance effect of SAM leads to the embedding of protein into SAM,resulting in a lack of resistance of SAM towards ***,the number of hydroxyl groups per unit area of double OH-terminated SAM at ∑=6.5 nm^(-2) is approximately 2 to 3 times that of single OH-terminated SAM at ∑=6.5 nm^(-2) and 4.5 nm^(-2),consequently yielding a weaker resistance of double OH-terminated SAM towards ***,due to the structure of SAM itself,i.e.,the formation of a nearly perfect ice-like hydrogen bond structure,the SAM exhibits the weakest resistance towards *** study will complement and improve the mechanism of OH-SAM resistance to protein adsorption,especially the traditional barrier effect of interfacial water.

Modeling the performance of perovskite solar cells with inserting porous insulating alumina nanoplates

Peng et al.[Science 379683(2023)]reported an effective method to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells by using thicker porous insulator contact(PIC)-alumina *** method overcomes the trade-off between the open-circuit voltage and the fill factor through two mechanisms:reduced surface recombination velocity and increased bulk recombination lifetime due to better perovskite *** arguments of drift-diffusion simulations,we find that an increase in mobility and carrier recombination lifetime in bulk are the key factors for minimizing the resistance-effect from thicker PICs and achieving a maximum power conversion efficiency(PCE)at approximately 25%reduced contact ***,the partially replacement of perovskite films with thicker PICs would result in a reduction in short-current density,but the relative low refractive index of the PICs imbedded into the high refractive index perovskite creates light trapping structures that compensate for this loss.

A flexible multiscale algorithm based on an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for complex viscoelastic flows

Viscoelastic flows play an important role in numerous engineering fields,and the multiscale algorithms for simulating viscoelastic flows have received significant attention in order to deepen our understanding of the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of viscoelastic ***,traditional grid-based multiscale methods are confined to simple viscoelastic flows with short relaxation time,and there is a lack of uniform multiscale scheme available for coupling different solvers in the simulations of viscoelastic *** this paper,a universal multiscale method coupling an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)and multiscale universal interface(MUI)library is presented for viscoelastic *** proposed multiscale method builds on an improved SPH method and leverages the MUI library to facilitate the exchange of information among different solvers in the overlapping *** test the capability and flexibility of the presented multiscale method to deal with complex viscoelastic flows by solving different multiscale problems of viscoelastic *** the first example,the simulation of a viscoelastic Poiseuille flow is carried out by two coupled improved SPH methods with different spatial *** effects of exchanging different physical quantities on the numerical results in both the upper and lower domains are also investigated as well as the absolute errors in the overlapping *** the second example,the complex Wannier flow with different Weissenberg numbers is further simulated by two improved SPH methods and coupling the improved SPH method and the dissipative particle dynamics(DPD)*** numerical results show that the physical quantities for viscoelastic flows obtained by the presented multiscale method are in consistence with those obtained by a single solver in the overlapping ***,transferring different physical quantities has an important effect on the numerical results.

Fairy shrimp Branchinella kugenumaensis displays sensitivity to microplastic exposure

The increasing global concern regarding plastic pollution has prompted the research into the consequences of microplastics(MPs)on aquatic *** shrimp Branchinella kugenumaensis are freshwater planktonic organisms that have existed for 250 million *** study aimed to uncover the harmful effects of MPs,with a particular focus on their size variations(0.1,1,and 5μm),on the fairy *** focused on how MPs could significantly affect the survival and growth of fairy ***,larger MPs,especially those measuring 5μm,caused higher mortality rates and hindered the growth compared to smaller *** impact of MPs continued even subsequent to depuration in clean *** accumulation of MPs within the intestines of fairy shrimp resulted in intestinal blockages,disrupted excretory functions,and harmed intestinal epithelial *** at the histological,cellular,and molecular levels showed that exposure to MPs triggered necroptosis in intestinal cells,accompanied by alterations in pathways related to transcription,translation,digestion,energy metabolism,and neurological ***,the effects of MPs on gene expression and pathways varied based on particle size,with larger MPs having a more significant effect and causing a strong response in xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism *** suggest that the increasing severity of MPs pollution could pose a significant threat to the survival of fairy *** study provided vital insights into the complex relationship between microplastics and aquatic organisms,and highlighted the urgent need to address the potential devastating impact of plastic pollution on freshwater ***,due to their rapid growth,strong reproductive capacity,sensitivity,and ease of cultivation,fairy shrimp hold the potential candidate to serve as a model organism for studying the effects of MPs and other pollutants on freshwater ecosystems.

Fully fluorinated hybrid zeolite imidazole/Prussian blue analogs with combined advantages for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Hybrid metal-organic framework(MOF)derivatives play a significant role in the novel catalyst development in energy conversion ***,we demonstrated the low-temperature fully fluorinated zeolitic imidazole framework(ZIF)coupled with a three-dimensional open framework Prussian blue analog(PBA)with combined advantages for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in water splitting *** spectroscopic analysis and the electrochemical studies revealed the combined advantages of efficient electronic effect and active site *** of good conductivity improvement by Ndoped carbon derived from ZIF and the high electrochemical surface area and active site exposure from PBA derivatives,good catalytic performance was obtained on the optimal catalyst of Co Ni ZIF/Co Fe-PBAF-300,which required a low overpotential of 250 m V to reach 10 m A/cm^(2)loaded on the glassy carbon electrode,with Tafel slope of 47.4 m V/dec,and very high dynamic and steady *** addition,the multi-component with the mixed structure from highly polar metal fluorides promoted the easy formation of the active phase as revealed by the post-sample *** current results showed a novel composite catalyst materials development from the hybrid MOF derivatives,which would be promising in the electrolysis of water oxidation reactions and energy-relevant catalysis reactions.

Single-atomic activation on ZnIn_(2)S_(4)basal planes boosts photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The use of single-atom cocatalysts plays a crucial role in enhancing artificial photocatalysis,where the precise construction of stable and efficient single-atom configuration is essential but remains ***,we report a simple one-step hydrothermal method for preparing single-atomic Mo modified ZnIn_(2)S_(4)(Mo-ZIS)nanosheets as a highly active photocatalytic hydrogen evolution(PHE)*** Mo substituting for portion of In atoms in ZIS nanosheets induces the spatial charge redistribution,which not only promotes the separation of photogenerated charge carriers but also optimizes the Gibbs free energy of adsorbing H*on S atoms at basal *** a result,Mo-ZIS exhibits an impressive PHE rate as high as 6.71 mmol·g^(−1)·h^(−1),over 10 times that of the pristine ZIS,with an apparent quantum efficiency(AQE)up to 38.8%at 420 *** study gains insights into the coordination configuration and electronic modulation resulting from single-atomic decoration,providing mechanistic cognitions for the development of advanced photocatalysts via non-precious metal atomic modification.

The size effect and analogous boundary states in a circular non-Hermitian chain

We investigate the size effect and boundary states based on a circular non-Hermitian chain under the nonreciprocal intra-cell coupling and inter-cell coupling *** find that the circular non-Hermitian chain exhibits an even–odd effect on the unit cell corresponding to a large chain,which is different from the open non-Hermitian chain only exhibiting the same effect for a small ***,we find that the originally localized bulk states become totally extended via designing the boundary coupling strength *** extended bulk states reveal the fact of the disappearance of the non-Hermitian skin *** particular,we show that the circular non-Hermitian chain also possesses the analogous edge states under some parameter regimes,which is pretty counterintuitive since the circular chain usually cannot define a *** investigations supply the different non-Hermitian phenomena in a circular non-Hermitian chain.
