Rodent pests severely damage agricultural *** risk models of rodent pests often do not include sufficient information regarding geographic *** plays an important role in rodent-pest outbreak risk,and more information about the relationship between habitat and crop protection is urgently *** goal of the present study was to provide an outbreak risk map for the Dongting Lake region and to understand the relationship between rodent-pest outbreak variation and habitat *** main rodent pests in the Dongting Lake region are yangtze voles(Microtus fortis).These pests cause massive damage in outbreak years,most notably in *** evaluation and ecological details were obtained by analyzing the correlation between habitat suitability and outbreak risk,as indicated by population density and historical *** the source-sink population,96.18%of yangtze vole disaster regions were covered by a 10-km buffer zone of suitable habitat in *** outbreak frequency and peak population density were significantly correlated with the proportion of land covered by suitable habitat(r=0.68,P=0.04 and r=0.76,P=0.03,respectively).The yangtze vole population tends to migrate approximately 10 km in outbreak ***,we propose a practical method for habitat evaluation that can be used to create integrated pest management plans for rodent pests when combined with basic information on the biology,ecology and behavior of the target species.

Deciphering biogeographic patterns of microorganisms is important for evaluating the maintenance of microbial diversity with respect to the ecosystem functions they ***,ecological processes shaping distribution patterns of microorganisms across large spatial‐scale watersheds remain largely *** Illumina sequencing and multiple statistical methods,we characterized distribution patterns and maintenance diversity of microorganisms(i.e.,archaea,bacteria,and fungi)in soils and sediments along the yangtze *** microbial distribution patterns were found between soils and sediments,and microbial community similarity significantly decreased with increasing geographical *** properties showed a larger effect on microbial community composition than geospatial and climatic *** and fungi displayed stronger species replacements and weaker environmental constraints in soils than that in sediments,but opposite for ***,bacteria,and fungi in soils showed broader environmental breadths and stronger phylogenetic signals compared to those in sediments,suggesting stronger environmental *** dominated community assemblies of archaea and fungi in soils and sediments,whereas determinism dominated bacterial community *** results have therefore highlighted distinct microbial distribution patterns and diversity maintenance mechanisms between soils and sediments,and emphasized important roles of species replacement,environmental adaptability,and ecological assembly processes on microbial *** findings are helpful in predicting loss of microbial diversity in the yangtze River Basin,and might assist the establishment of environmental policies for protecting fragile watersheds.

Diel,seasonal,and annual variations of fish assemblages in intertidal creeks of the Changjiang River estuary

The use patterns of salt marsh habitats by fish assemblages were investigated in two welldeveloped intertidal creeks in the Changjiang(yangtze)River estuary on spatial and temporal *** were collected using fyke nets at two sites during day and night in each season throughout four *** changes in fish assemblages were detected over seasonal and interannual cycles,with many more marine species present in winter assemblages,whereas freshwater and estuarine species characterized the other seasonal *** appearance of catadromous species in intertidal creeks mainly depended upon their specific physiological requirements,such as spawning *** significant diel shifts were observed in fish *** diel pattern may be a combined consequence of avian predation pressure and other drivers(i.e.,inherent living behaviors,food availability,and predation by piscivorous fishes).The spatial difference in fish community was insignificant even though the two intertidal creeks were different in *** creeks with different size could possess similar ecological value for fish *** analysis(RDA)showed that biological factors exerted greater effects on fish assemblages than physical *** variations were strongly facilitated by food availability,but negatively impacted by avian ***,water temperature,and river runoff had weak influence on temporal variations of fish *** lengthfrequency distribution showed that the fish collected in these two sites mainly consisted of young-of-year and juvenile fish,which confirmed that the creeks provided important nursery and forage roles in the process of fish ontogenetic ***,we proposed that salt marsh conservation management should be equally applied to all well-developed intertidal creeks regardless of creek size.

Background:The lateral movements of mass and energy across the terrestrial-aquatic interface are being increasingly recognized for their importance in the carbon(C)balance of coastal/estuarine *** quantifed the lateral fux of detrital C in the yangtze estuary where invasive Spartina alternifora has substantially and extensively altered the ecosystem structure and *** overall objective was to close the C budget of estuarine wetlands through feld sampling,tower-based measurements,and ***:A lateral detrital C exchange evaluation platform was established in a case study of the yangtze River Estuary to investigate the efect of ecosystem structural changes on lateral detrital C transfer *** study estimated the lateral detrital C exchange based on the gross primary production(GPP)by performing coupled modeling and feld ***-based measurements and MODIS time series and CH4 outgassing and biomass simultaneously measured the lateral detrital C fux to characterize the relative contributions of lateral(i.e.,detritus)C fuxes to the annual marsh C ***:The C pools in the plants and soil of Spartina marshes were signifcantly higher than those of the native community dominated by Phragmites *** GPP based on MODIS(GPPMODIS)was 472.6 g C m^(−2) year^(−1) and accounted for 73.0%of the GPP estimated from eddy covariance towers(GPPEC)(646.9±70.7 g C m^(−2) year^(−1)).We also detected a higher GPPMODIS during the pre-growing season,which exhibited a similar lateral detrital C fux *** average,25.8%of the net primary production(NPP),which ranged from 0.21 to 0.30 kg C m^(−2) year^(−1),was exported during lateral *** annual C loss as CH4 was estimated to be 17.9±3.7 g C m^(−2) year^(−1),accounting for 2.8%of the *** net positive detrital C fux(i.e.,more detritus leaving the wetlands),which could exceed 0.16 kg C m^(−2) day^(-1),was related to daily ***,the observed lateral detrital C fu
