Serum metabolome profiles characterized by patients with hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis B and C

AIM: To clarify the characteristics of metabolite profiles in virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients using serum metabolome ***: The serum levels of low-molecular-weight metabolites in 68 patients with HCC were quantified using capillary electrophoresis chromatography and mass spectrometry. Thirty and 38 of the patients suffered from hepatitis B virus-related HCC (HCC-B) and hepatitis C virus-related HCC (HCC-C), ***: The main metabolites characteristic of HCC were those associated with glutathione metabolism, notably 13 γ-glutamyl peptides, which are by-products of glutathione induction. Two major profiles, i.e., concentration patterns, of metabolites were identified in HCC patients, and these were classified into two groups: an HCC-B group and an HCC-C group including some of the HCC-B cases. The receiver operating characteristic curve for the multiple logistic regression model discriminating HCC-B from HCC-C incorporating the concentrations of glutamic acid, methionine and γ-glutamyl-glycine-glycine showed a highly significant area under the curve value of 0.94 (95%CI: 0.89-1.0, P < 0.0001).CONCLUSION: The serum levels of γ-glutamyl peptides, as well as their concentration patterns, contribute to the development of potential biomarkers for virus-related HCC. The difference in metabolite profiles between HCC-B and HCC-C may reflect the respective metabolic reactions that underlie the different pathogeneses of these two types of HCC.

Numerical Evaluation of External Effects on Interspecific Interacting Populations

In this paper, effects of environmental and hunting parameters on the interspecific interacting populations are considered by applying the Rosenzweig-MacArthur model with the Holling type II functional response. Attenuating functions of the carrying capacity are introduced with a concern on the hunting parameters. We carry out numerical study to investigate how the population densities behave when environmental quantities change. We obtain the Hopf bifurcation diagrams from numerical results.

POD analysis of the instability mode of a low-speed streak in a laminar boundary layer

The instability of one single low-speed streak in a zero-pressure-gradient laminar boundary layer is investigated experimentally via both hydrogen bubble visualization and planar particle image velocimetry(PIV) measurement. A single low-speed streak is generated and destabilized by the wake of an interference wire positioned normal to the wall and in the upstream. The downstream development of the streak includes secondary instability and self-reproduction process, which leads to the generation of two additional streaks appearing on either side of the primary one. A proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) analysis of PIV measured velocity field is used to identify the components of the streak instability in the POD mode space: for a sinuous/varicose type of POD mode, its basis functions present anti-symmetric/symmetric distributions about the streak centerline in the streamwise component, and the symmetry condition reverses in the spanwise component. It is further shown that sinuous mode dominates the turbulent kinematic energy(TKE) through the whole streak evolution process, the TKE content first increases along the streamwise direction to a saturation value and then decays slowly. In contrast, varicose mode exhibits a sustained growth of the TKE content,suggesting an increasing competition of varicose instability against sinuous instability.

Dear Editor,Several Phase 3 trials have demonstrated the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor(ICI)-based combination therapies in the treatment of advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma(RCC)[1-5].However,there is still no well-defined adequate treatment for patients who experience disease progression after initial ICI-based combination therapy.

Modified simultaneous integrated boost radiotherapy for an unresectable huge refractory pelvic tumor diagnosed as a rectal adenocarcinoma

A clinical trial of radiotherapy with modified simultaneous integrated boost(SIB)technique against huge tumors was conducted.A 58-year-old male patient who had a huge pelvic tumor diagnosed as a rectal adenocarcinoma due to familial adenomatous polyposis was enrolled in this *** total dose of 77 Gy(equivalent dose in 2Gy/fraction)and 64.5 Gy was delivered to the center of the tumor and the surrounding area respectively,andapproximately 20%dose escalation was achieved with the modified SIB *** tumor with an initial maximum size of 15 cm disappeared 120 d after the start of the *** status of the patient improved from 4 to *** with modified SIB may be effective for patients with a huge tumor in terms of tumor shrinkage/disappearance,improvement of QOL,and prolongation of survival.

Poultry litter biochar application in combination with chemical fertilizer and Azolla green manure improves rice grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency in paddy soil

Poultry litter biochar is known to improve crop ***,its beneficial interactions with chemical fertilizer and/or organic manure on rice yield and nitrogen(N)use efficiency(NUE)are not well *** objective of this study was to co-apply poultry litter biochar(hereinafter biochar)and chemical fertilizer and/or Azolla as organic manure(herein N fertilizer sources)to improve the productivity of rice and *** treatments-no amendments(control),chemical fertilizer(NPK),Azolla as green manure(Azolla),and NPK+Azolla without and with biochar amendment-were evalu-ated in a pot *** rice plant growth components,yield,and NUE were *** to the treatments without biochar,co-application of biochar and N fertilizer sources significantly improved grain N uptake by 23.9%and NUE by 34.3-246.9%.These treatments also significantly improved rice growth components(5.6-18.2%)and grain yield(32.4%).Significant changes in soil properties including increases in pH,electrical conductivity(EC),total N,organic car-bon,and available phosphorus were observed following biochar *** for the soil pH and EC parameters,no significant synergistic interactions between biochar and N fertilizer sources were observed for any parameters in the present ***,compared to other treatments,the co-application of biochar and Azolla offers a feasible approach to improve rice productivity and NUE and reduce chemical fertilizer use,thereby reducing agricultural pollution and production costs.

Lipophilic extractives of the inner and outer barks from six different Pinus species grown in Indonesia

The chemical compositions of the dichloromethane extracts of inner and outer barks from six Pinus species（***,***,***,***,***,and ***） grown in Indonesia were investigated by GC and GC–***,the amounts of extractive contents were higher in the inner bark than in the outer bark except for *** acids,monoterpenes,sesquiterpenes,resin acids,triterpenoids,and steroids were detected and *** and outer barks differed not only in content of these compounds but also in their *** acids and alcohols were the major classes of lipophilic compounds in the outer bark of ***, ***,and *** and triterpenoids were the dominant compounds identified in the inner bark of ***,***,and *** acids were the most abundant group in the inner bark of *** whereas monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were recorded in minor quantities in both bark layers of all species.

Uniqueness Theorems of Entire Functions with Shared-set in an Angular Domain

There have been lots of papers on the uniqueness theory of entire functions concerning shared-sets in the whole complex plane. However, it seems that the uniqueness theory in an angular domain is not widely investigated. In this paper, we study the uniqueness of entire functions concerning shared-sets in an angular domain instead of the whole complex plane, and we supply examples to show that Theorem 1 is sharp.

Dear Editor,Collecting duct carcinoma(CDC)or Bellini carcinoma originates in the distal collecting *** is a markedly aggressive subtype of renal cell carcinoma and accounts for less than 1%of all renal cell carcinomas[1].We described a patient with CDC and psoriasis,who showed complete response(CR)after being treated with combination therapy of nivolumab and ipilimumab(NI).The study was conducted in accordance with and approved by the Ethics Committee of yamagata university Faculty of Medicine(approval no.2019-35).The need for patient consent was waived by the same institutional review board;all the patients provided written informed consents.
