During the boreal summer,intraseasonal oscillations exhibit significant interannual variations in intensity over two key regions:the central-western equatorial Pacific(5°S-5°N,150°E-150°W)and the subtropical Northwestern Pacific(10°-20°N,130°E-175°W).The former is well-documented and considered to be influenced by the ENSO,while the latter has received comparatively less attention and is likely influenced by the Pacific Meridional Mode(PMM),as suggested by partial correlation analysis *** elucidate the physical processes responsible for the enhanced(weakened)intraseasonal convection over the subtropical northwestern Pacific during warm(cold)PMM years,the authors employed a moisture budget *** findings reveal that during warm PMM years,there is an increase in summer-mean moisture over the subtropical northwestern *** increase interacts with intensified vertical motion perturbations in the region,leading to greater vertical moisture advection in the lower troposphere and consequently resulting in convective *** a process is pivotal in amplifying intraseasonal convection *** observational findings were further verified by model experiments forced by PMM-like sea surface temperature patterns.

Due to the lack of accurate data and complex parameterization,the prediction of groundwater depth is a chal-lenge for numerical *** learning can effectively solve this issue and has been proven useful in the prediction of groundwater depth in many *** this study,two new models are applied to the prediction of groundwater depth in the Ningxia area,*** two models combine the improved dung beetle optimizer(DBO)algorithm with two deep learning models:The Multi-head Attention-Convolution Neural Network-Long Short Term Memory networks(MH-CNN-LSTM)and the Multi-head Attention-Convolution Neural Network-Gated Recurrent Unit(MH-CNN-GRU).The models with DBO show better prediction performance,with larger R(correlation coefficient),RPD(residual prediction deviation),and lower RMSE(root-mean-square error).Com-pared with the models with the original DBO,the R and RPD of models with the improved DBO increase by over 1.5%,and the RMSE decreases by over 1.8%,indicating better prediction *** addition,compared with the multiple linear regression model,a traditional statistical model,deep learning models have better prediction performance.

Drought across Northwest China in late spring has exerted a vital effect on the local climate and agricultural production,and has been alleviated during the past *** study explored the influence of the preceding Arctic sea ice on the May drought in Northwest China caused by the precipitation *** analysis indicated that when the Greenland Sea ice concentration is abnormally high during February to April,the dry conditions in Northwest China tend to be *** increase of sea ice in the Greenland Sea can excite a meridional circulation,which causes sea surface temperature(SST)anomalies in the North Atlantic via the sea-air interaction,manifested as significant warm SST anomalies over the south of Greenland and the subtropical North Atlantic,but negative SST anomalies over the west of the *** abnormal SST pattern maintains to May and triggers a zonal wave train from the North Atlantic through Scandinavia and Central Asia to Northwest China,leading to abnormal cyclones in Northwest ***,Northwest China experiences a more humid climate than usual.

Global historic precipitation dataset is the base for climate and water cycle *** have been several global historic land surface precipitation datasets developed by international data centers such as the US National Climatic Data center(NCDC),European Climate Assessment & Dataset project team,Met Office,etc.,but so far there are no such datasets developed by any research institute in *** addition,each dataset has its own focus of study region,and the existing global precipitation datasets only contain sparse observational stations over China,which may result in uncertainties in East Asian precipitation *** order to take into account comprehensive historic information,users might need to employ two or more ***,the non-uniform data formats,data units,station IDs,and so on add extra difficulties for users to exploit these *** this reason,a complete historic precipitation dataset that takes advantages of various datasets has been developed and produced in the National meteorological information center of *** observations from 12 sources are aggregated,and the data formats,data units,and station IDs are *** stations with the same ID are identified,with duplicated observations *** test,correlation coefficient test,significance t-test at the95%confidence level,and significance F-test at the 95%confidence level are conducted first to ensure the data *** those datasets that satisfy all the above four criteria are integrated to produce the China meteorological Administration global precipitation(CGP) historic precipitation dataset version *** contains observations at 31 thousand stations with 1.87 x 107 data records,among which 4152 time series of precipitation are longer than 100 *** dataset plays a critical role in climate research due to its advantages in large data volume and high density of station network,compared to other *** the Penalized Maximal

The quality controlled（RAW） and homogenized（ADJ） radiosonde temperatures within 850-30 hPa collected at 118 stations in China are compared,on a monthly mean basis,with the temperatures extracted from 8 reanalysis datasets（REA） including NCEP-1,NCEP-2,ERA-40（ECMWF 45-yr Reanalysis）,ERAInterim,JRA-55（Japanese 55-yr Reanalysis）,20CR（20th Century Reanalysis）,MERRA（Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis）,and CFSR（Climate Forecast System Reanalysis）.Average differences,correlations,standard deviations,and linear trends among RAW,ADJ,and REA for the period 1981-2010 are *** results reveal significant inhomogeneity in the time series of RAW radiosonde temperature in China;an overall negative adjustment was thus employed to obtain the ADJ temperatures,and the effect of the negative adjustment is the most significant within 200-100 *** a homogenization process has removed the system errors in RAW,possibly caused by radiosonde instrument changes and observation system ***,the correlation is higher between ADJ and REA than that between RAW and *** mean difference between ADJ and REA is about 1℃ during 1981-2010,while REA are mostly cooler in the troposphere and warmer in the stratosphere than ADJ;nonetheless,they have a significant high and positive correlation and their annual variability is notably ***,the linear trends in REA and ADJ both demonstrate warming in the lower-mid troposphere and cooling in the mid stratosphere,with large uncertainties found in the upper troposphere and lower *** general,ERA-Interim,JRA-55,and MERRA are more consistent with ADJ than other reanalysis datasets.

By using the observation data from 89 weather stations in xinjiang during 1961-2010, this paper analyzed the basic climatic elements including temperature, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine duration, water vapor pressure, and dust storm in the entire xinjiang and the subareas: North xinjiang, Tianshan Mountains, and South xinjiang. The results indicate that from 1961 to 2010 the annual and seasonal mean temperatures in the entire xinjiang show an increasing trend with the increasing rate rising from south to north. The increasing rate of annual mean minimum temperature is over twice more than that of the annual mean maximum temperature, contributing much to the increase in the annual averages. The magnitude of the decrease rate of low-temperature days is larger than the increase rate of high-temperature days. The increase of warm days and warm nights and the decrease of cold days and cold nights further reveal that the temperature increasing in xinjiang is higher. In addition, annual and seasonal rainfalls have been increasing. South xinjiang experiences higher increase in rainfall amounts than North xinjiang and Tianshan Mountains. Annual rainy days, longest consecutive rainy days, the daily maximum precipitation and extreme precipitation events, annual torrential rain days and amount, annual blizzard days and amount, all show an increasing trend, corresponding to the increasing in annual mean water vapor pressure. This result shows that the humidity has increased with temperature increasing in the past 50 years. The decrease in annual mean wind speed and gale days lessen the impact of dust storm, sandstorm, and floating dust events. The increase in annual rainy days is the cause of the decrease in annual sunshine duration, while the increase in spring sunshine duration corresponds with the decrease in dust weather. A new globally reconstructed sea surface temperature(SST)analysis dataset developed by the China meteorological Administration(CMA-SST),available on 2°×2°and monthly resolutions since 1900,is described and assessed in this *** dataset has been constructed from a newly developed integrated dataset with denser and wider sampling of in situ SST observations and follows similar analysis techniques to the Extended Reconstructed SST,version 5(ERSST.v5).Assessments show that the larger observation quantity of the input data source is beneficial to making the reconstructed SSTs more realistic than those reconstructed with ICOADS 3.0+GTS(International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Dataset 3.0 and Global Telecommunication System),especially in China’s offshore sea ***,a specific parameter for bias correction has been upgraded to be self-adaptive to the input data source,and serves as a mediator to improve the accuracy of the reconstructed ***,the reconstructed CMA-SST dataset is comparable to currently congeneric *** biases are similar to those of ERSST.v5,the Centennial Observation-Based Estimates of SST version 2(COBE-SST2),the Hadley Centre Sea Ice and SST dataset version 2(Had ISST2),and the Hadley Centre SST dataset version 3(Had SST3);and more specifically,they are closest to ERSST.v5 and lower than Had ISST2 and Had SST3 at high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere where in situ observations are ***,its temporal characteristics,such as the year-to-year variations of globally averaged SST anomalies and time series of the Nino-3.4,Atlantic multidecadal oscillation,and Pacific decadal oscillation indices are also a good match to those of congeneric *** the warming rates of CMA-SST are a little higher in many regions over the periods 1900-2019 and 1950-2019,they are found to be acceptable and within the quantified uncertainties of ***,there are noticeable differences in the strength and stability o

We developed an integrated global land surface dataset(IGLD)at the National meteorological information center of China meteorological *** IGLD consists of hourly data for 75 variables from five data *** contains not only the most widely used variables(e.g.,pressure,temperature,dew-point temperature,and precipitation),but also visibility,cloud cover,snow depth,and so on.A hierarchy of data sources was created to identify duplicate *** records located higher in the hierarchy were adopted preferentially in the IGLD.A comprehensive quality control procedure including extreme value test,internal consistency check,and spatiotemporal consistency check,was applied to the *** IGLD consists of land surface observations at more than 20,000 global sites from 1901 to 2018,of which about 17,000 stations are currently *** number of global observatories generally increased over time,except for the 1960 s to 1970 *** increased from about 2300 in 1951 to 17,000 in *** observations over America,Europe,and eastern Asia always showed a high temporal integrity and dense spatial coverage,whereas measurements were sparser in South America,Africa,Russia,and the Mediterranean *** general,the standard and intermediate standard times for observation suggested by the World meteorological Organization(WMO)were followed globally,except in Australia,where there were few data measured on the WMO *** IGLD has been used in the China’s first generation global atmospheric reanalysis product(CRA)and the global daily precipitation dataset.

Homogenization of Surface Pressure Data in Tianjin, China

Based on a hydrostatic check,a preliminary quality control procedure was applied to the hourly surface air pressure(SAP)and sea level pressure(SLP)data from 13 surface observation stations in Tianjin,*** daily and monthly series of the two pressures were tested for homogeneity with the RHtestsV5 software package and corrected by using the surface air temperature data as a *** results showed that 5 and 3 of the 13 stations had significant breakpoints in their SAP and SLP data,respectively,mainly caused by station *** matching adjustments showed that both pressures were dominated by positive deviation corrections and adjustments,with probability densities>0.2 concentrated in the ranges 0.02 to 1.80 and-0.02 to 1.64 *** of the variances and trends of the two pressures before and after adjustment showed that homogeneity correction can greatly reduce the influence of abnormal discrete pressure data and make the long-term trends of the series more *** Baodi station(54525),which has the most significant correction results,as an example,the trend amplitude of the adjusted SAP and SLP was increased by 0.316 and 0.294 hPa(10 yr)-1(95%confidence level),respectively,clearly weakening the sudden reduction induced in the two pressure series by the relocation of this *** with similar products showed that the adjusted data were better than those from the China meteorological ***,the reliability of the surface pressure data and the processing techniques have been improved.

Climate Analysis of Tornadoes in China

Based on analysis of historical tornado observation data provided by the primary network of national weather stations in China for the period from 1960 to 2009, it is found that most tornadoes in China （85%） occurred over plains. Specifically, large numbers of tornado occurrences are found in the Northeast Plain, the North China Plain, the middle-lower Yangtze Plain, and the Pearl River Delta Plain. A flat underlying surface is conducive to tornado occurrence, while the latitudal variation of tornado occurrence in China is not so obvious. Tornadoes mainly occur in summer, and the highest frequency is in July. Note that the beginning and the time span of tornado outbreaks are different in North and South China. Tornadoes occur during May-September in South China （south of 25°N）, June-September in Northeast China （north of 40°N）, July-September in the middle-lower Yangtze Plain, and July-August in North China （between 25° and 40°N）. More than 80% of total tornadoes occurred during the above periods for the specific regions. The 1960s and 1970s have seen about twice the average number of tornadoes （7.5 times per year） compared to the mean for 1960-2009. The most frequent occurrence of tornado was in the early and mid 1960s; there were large fluctuations in the 1970s; and the number of tornadoes in the 1980s approached the 50-yr average. Tornado occurrences gradually decreased in the late 1980s, and an abrupt change with dramatic decrease occurred in 1994. The decrease in the tornado occurrence frequency is consistent with the simultaneous climatic change in the meteorological elements that are favorable for tornado formation. Tornado formation requires large vertical wind shear and sufficient atmospheric moisture content near the ground. Changes in the vertical wind shear at both 0-1 and 0-6 km appear to be one important factor that results in the decrease in tornado formation.
