Enhanced photodynamic therapy of mixed phase TiO2（B）/anatase nanofibers for killing of HeLa cells

Photodynamic therapy （PDT）, which is a procedure that uses photosensitizing drug to apply therapy selectively to target sites, has been proven to be a safe treatment for cancers and conditions that may develop into cancers. Nano-sized TiO2 has been regarded as potential photosensitizer for UV light driven PDT. In this study, four types of TiO2 nanofibers were prepared from proton tri-titanate （H2T3O7） nanofiber. The as-obtained nanofibers were demonstrated as efficient photosensitizers for PDT killing of HeLa cells. MTT assay and flow cytometry （FCM） were carried out to evaluate the biocompatibility, percentage of apoptotic cells, and cell viability. The non-cytotoxicity of the as-prepared TiO2 nanofibers in the absence of UV irradiation has also been demonstrated. Under UV light irradiation, the TiO2 nanofibers, particularly the mixed phase nanofibers, displayed much higher cell-killing efficiency than Pirarubicin （THP）, which is a common drug to induce the apoptosis of HeLa cells. We ascribe the high cell- killing efficiency of the mixed phase nanofibers to the bandgap edge match and stable interface between TiO2（B） and anatase phases in a single nanofiber, which can inhibit the recombination of the photogenerated electrons and holes. This promotes the charge separation and transfer processes and can produce more reactive oxygen species （ROS） that are responsible for the killing of HeLa cells.

Influence of occlusal splint thickness on the position of mandible

Objective: To investigate the influence of occlusal splint thickness on mandibular movement. Methods: Stabilization occlusal splints of 3, 5 and 7 mm thickness were respectively used during clenching from light contact in intercuspal position and the movement of condyles and incisor point were recorded in 5 healthy subjects. Results:The condyles moved anteriorly and superiorly without wearing occlusal splint. When wearing the occlusal splints the condyles displaced anteriorly and inferiorly. The distance of displacement increased gradually with raising the thickness of splint, though the significant difference was just found in right condyle in superior- inferior movement. The condyles went again on a path of anterior and superior direction when subjects clenched from the displaced position. In right condyle the displacement was significantly greater at 7 mm splint than that at 3 mm splint both in anterior-posterior and inferior-superior direction, while in left condyle only in anterior-posterior direction. Meanwhile, the incisal point movement was larger at 7 mm splint than at 3 mm splint in inferior-superior direction. In tapping movement there were no significant differences in condyle movement between the different thickness of occlusal splint. However, the coefficient of variation in total cycle time was the greatest when wearing the splint of 7 mm. Conclusion: Occlusal splint of 7 mm has greater effect than that of 3 mm on condyle movement, but no obvious difference with occlusal splint of 5 mm. When occlusal splint of 7 mm is inserted, the stability of condyle might be influenced during tapping movement.

Correlation of the expression of Eotaxin-3 and Foxm1 with the expression of p38MAPK/NF-κB and inflammatory factors in mucosa tissue of chronic sinusitis

Objective:To study the correlation of the expression of Eotaxin-3 and Foxm1 with the expression of p38MAPK/NF-κB and inflammatory factors in mucosa tissue of chronic ***:57 patients with chronic sinusitis and 38 patients with nasal septum deviation who received nasal endoscopic surgery in our hospital between March 2015 and August 2016 were selected and included in sinusitis group and control group respectively. Sinus mucosa tissues were collected to test the expression of Eotaxin-3, Foxm1, p38MAPK, NF-κB and inflammatory factors, and serum samples were collected to test the levels of inflammatory ***:Eotaxin-3, Foxm1, p38MAPK and NF-κB protein expression in mucosa tissue of sinusitis group were significantly higher than those of control group, and the Eotaxin-3 and Foxm1 protein expression were positively correlated with p38MAPK and NF-κB protein expression;TGF-β1, IL-1β, IL-25, IL-33 and YKL-40 levels in nasal mucosa and serum of sinusitis group were significantly higher than those of control group, and TGF-β1, IL-1β, IL-25, IL-33 and YKL-40 levels in nasal mucosa and serum were positively correlated with p38MAPK and NF-κB protein ***:Eotaxin-3 and Foxm1 are expressed in mucosa tissue of chronic sinusitis, and can start the expression of inflammatory factors and induce the cascade amplification of inflammatory reaction through p38MAPK/ NF-κB signaling pathway.

Salvianolate increases heat shock protein expression in a cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury model

Stroke remains a worldwide health problem. Salvianolate exerts a protective effect in various mi- crocirculatory disturbance-related diseases, but studies of the mechanisms underlying its protective action have mainly focused on the myocardium, whereas little research has been carried out in brain tissue following ischemia-reperfusion. We assessed the neuroprotective effects of salvianolate in a rat model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury induced using the suture method. At onset and 24 and 48 hours after reperfusion, rats were intraperitoneally injected with salvianolate （18 mg/kg） or saline. Neurological deficit scores at 72 hours showed that the neurological functions of rats that had received salvianolate were significantly better than those of the rats that had received saline. 2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride was used to stain cerebral tissue to determine the extent of the infarct area. A significantly smaller infarct area and a significantly lower number of apoptotic cells were observed after treatment with salvianolate compared with the saline treatment. Expression of heat shock protein 22 and phosphorylated protein kinase B in ischemic brain tissue was significantly greater in rats treated with salvianolate compared with rats treated with saline. Our findings suggest that salvianolate provides neuroprotective effects against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury by upregulating heat shock protein 22 and phosphorylated protein kinase B expression.

Correlation of electrophysiological characteristics Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT with myocardial injury and oxygen free radical generation in patients with acute myocardial infarction

Objective: To study the correlation of electrophysiological characteristics Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT with myocardial injury and oxygen free radical generation in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction in our hospital between March 2014 and March 2017 were selected as the AMI group, and healthy subjects who received physical examination were selected as the control group, electrocardiography was done to determine Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT, serum was collected to determine the levels of myocardial injury markers, oxygen free radical generation indexes and apoptosis indexes, and peripheral blood was collected to determine the expression of oxygen free radical generation indexes. Results: Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT of AMI group were significantly higher than those of control group, and serum CK-MB, cTnI, H-FABP, MDA, sTWEAK, sFas and sTRAIL contents as well as peripheral blood Nrf-2, NRE and HO-1 mRNA expression were significantly higher than those of control group and positively correlated with Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT. Conclusion: Electrophysiological characteristics Tp-ec and Tp-e/QT increase, and the transseptal dispersion of repolarization increases in patients with acute myocardial infarction, and they are closely related to myocardial injury and oxygen free radical generation.

Expression and Function of Zinc-α2-Glycoprotein

Zinc-α2-glycoprotein(ZAG), encoded by the AZGP1 gene, is a major histocompatibility complex I molecule and a lipid-mobilizing factor. ZAG has been demonstrated to promote lipid metabolism and glucose utilization, and to regulate insulin sensitivity. Apart from adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, liver, and kidney, ZAG also occurs in brain tissue, but its distribution in brain is debatable. Only a few studies have investigated ZAG in the brain. It has been found in the brains of patients with Krabbe disease and epilepsy, and in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Alzheimer disease, frontotemporal lobe dementia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Both ZAG protein and AZGP1 m RNA are decreased in epilepsy patients and animal models, while overexpression of ZAG suppresses seizure and epileptic discharges in animal models of epilepsy, but knowledge of the specific mechanism of ZAG in epilepsy is limited. In this review, we summarize the known roles and molecular mechanisms of ZAG in lipid metabolism and glucose metabolism, and in the regulation of insulin sensitivity, and discuss the possible mechanisms by which it suppresses epilepsy.

A single-center retrospective study on epidemiological and Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome characteristics of 21010 patients with reflux/heartburn symptoms

Clinical and Experimental Observation on Treatment of Sensorineural Deafness with Bushen Conger Tablet (补肾聪耳片)

Objective: To observe the effect of Bushen Conger （BSCE） tablet, a pure Chinese herbal medicine for reinforcing Kidney, removing blood stasis and opening apertures, in treating sensorineural deafness. Methods: Three hundred and ten patients were treated by BSCE tablet and the effects were observed. At the same time the effects of BSCE tablet on hearing, SOD, LPO, etc. were also assayed in guinea pigs. Results: The clinical total effective rate of BSCE tablet was 71.9 %. Animal experiment proved that the drug was effective in preventing and treating toxic deafness induced by aminoglycoside antibiotics. Conclusion: BSCE tablet could cure sensorineural deafness through adjusting the cochlear cyclic neucleotides as well as its SOD level, reducing the LPO level, and raising the thyroid and sexual glandular functions.
