Brain activation and inhibition after acupuncture at Taichong and Taixi: resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging

Acupuncture can induce changes in the brain. However, the majority of studies to date have focused on a single acupoint at a time. In the present study, we observed activity changes in the brains of healthy volunteers before and after acupuncture atTaichong （LR3） andTaixi （KI3） using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Fifteen healthy volunteers underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain 15 minutes before acupuncture, then received acupuncture atTaichong andTaixi using the nail-pressing needle insertion method, after which the needle was retained in place for 30 minutes. Fifteen minutes after withdrawal of the needle, the volunteers underwent a further session of resting-state functional magnetic res-onance imaging, which revealed that the amplitude of low-frequency lfuctuation, a measure of spontaneous neuronal activity, increased mainly in the cerebral occipital lobe and middle occipital gyrus （Brodmann area 18/19）, inferior occipital gyrus （Brodmann area 18） and cuneus （Brodmann area 18）, but decreased mainly in the gyrus rectus of the frontal lobe （Brodmann area 11）, inferi-or frontal gyrus （Brodmann area 44） and the center of the posterior lobe of the cerebellum. The present ifndings indicate that acupuncture atTaichong andTaixi speciifcally promote blood lfow and activation in the brain areas related to vision, emotion and cognition, and inhibit brain areas related to emotion, attention, phonological and semantic processing, and memory.

3d-transition metal(Fe,Co,Ni,and Mn)-based MXene materials have been predicted to demonstrate exceptional electrochemical performance because of their good electrical conductivity and the presence of metallic atoms with multiple charge ***,until now,there have been no reports on MXenes based on Fe,Co,Ni,and Mn,due to the lack of 3d-metal-layered ***,we successfully synthesized the first 3d-transition metal-based MXenes,Mn_(2)CT_(x) by exfoliating a layered precursor derived from the anti-perovskite bulk *** as-prepared Mn_(2)CT_(x) MXene nanosheets were employed as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries,which exhibited stable storage capacity of 764.7 mAh·g^(-1) at 0.5 C,placing its storage capacities at an upper-middle level compared with other reported MXene materials as well as other Mn-based anode ***,this study opens a new avenue for MXene research by synthesizing 3d-transition metal-based MXenes for electrochemical applications.

Experimental Study on Wire Melting Control Ability of Twin-Body Plasma Arc

The twin-body plasma arc has the decoupling control ability of heat transfer and mass transfer,which is beneficial to shape and property control in wire arc additive *** this paper,with the wire feeding speed as a characteristic quantity,the wire melting control ability of twin-body plasma arc was studied by adjusting the current separation ratio(under the condition of a constant total current),the wire current/main current and the position of the wire in the arc axial *** results showed that under the premise that the total current remains unchanged(100 A),as the current separation ratio increased,the middle and minimum melting amounts increased approximately synchronously under the effect of anode effect power,the first melting mass range remained constant;the maximum melting amount increased twice as fast as the middle melting amount under the effect of the wire feeding speed,and the second melting mass range was *** the wire current increased,the anode effect power and the plasma arc power were both factors causing the increase in the wire melting amount;however,when the main current increased,the plasma arc power was the only factor causing the increase in the wire melting *** average wire melting increment caused by the anode effect power was approximately 2.7 times that caused by the plasma arc *** minimum melting amount was not affected by the wire-torch distance under any current separation ratio *** the current separation ratio increased and reached a threshold,the middle melting amount remained constant with increasing wire-torch *** the current separation ratio continued to increase and reached the next threshold,the maximum melting amount remained constant with the increasing wire-torch *** effect of the wire-torch distance on the wire melting amount reduced with the increase in the current separation *** this study,the decoupling mechanism and ability of this innovative

Electroacupuncture-induced neuroprotection against focal cerebral ischemia in the rat is mediated by adenosine A1 receptors

The activation of adenosine A1 receptors is important for protecting against ischemic brain injury and pretreatment with electroacupuncture has been shown to mitigate ischemic brain insult. The aim of this study was to test whether the adenosine A1 receptor mediates electroacupuncture pretreatment-induced neuroprotection against ischemic brain injury. We first performed 30 minutes of electroacupuncture pretreatment at the Baihui acupoint（GV20）, delivered with a current of 1 mA, a frequency of 2/15 Hz, and a depth of 1 mm. High-performance liquid chromatography found that adenosine triphosphate and adenosine levels peaked in the cerebral cortex at 15 minutes and 120 minutes after electroacupuncture pretreatment, respectively. We further examined the effect of 15 or 120 minutes electroacupuncture treatment on ischemic brain injury in a rat middle cerebral artery-occlusion model. We found that at 24 hours reperfusion,120 minutes after electroacupuncture pretreatment, but not for 15 minutes, significantly reduced behavioral deficits and infarct volumes. Last, we demonstrated that the protective effect gained by 120 minutes after electroacupuncture treatment before ischemic injury was abolished by pretreatment with the A1-receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine（1 mg/kg, intraperitoneally）. Our results suggest that pretreatment with electroacupuncture at the Baihui acupoint elicits protection against transient cerebral ischemia via action at adenosine A1 receptors.

Effect of aging on penile ultrastructure

Aim: To clarify whether there are anatomical changes in tunica albuginea and corpora cavernosa in aged rats. Meth-ods: Seventeen male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups based on age. Group A consisted of youngrats (9 weeks), Group B, middle aged rats (14 weeks) and Group C, old rats (62 weeks). The penile samples wereobtained and observed under a scanning electron microscope. Results: The thickness (mean ± SD) of the tunica al-buginea was 0.14±0.02, 0.16±0.03 and 0.06±0.02 mm in Groups A, B and C, respectively. The tunica albug-inea of group C was significantly thinner than those of the other two groups (P < 0.05) and the elastic fibers were di-minished in the old rats. In the corpora cavernosa of old rats, the intracavernous pillars were irregular, in which manylarge collagen fibers could be observed, and the smooth muscle and elastic fibers were reduced. Conclusion; In oldrats, the tunica albuginea became thinner with diminished elastic fibers; the collagen fibers of corpora cavernosa wereincreased while the smooth muscle and elastic fibers were reduced. Rare variant of pancreaticobiliary maljunction associated with pancreas divisum in a child diagnosed and treated by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography: A case report

BACKGROUND Pancreaticobiliary maljunction(PBM) is an uncommon congenital anomaly of the pancreatic and biliary ductal system, defined as a union of the pancreatic and biliary ducts located outside the duodenal wall. According to the Komi classification of PBM, the common bile duct(CBD) directly fuses with the ventral pancreatic duct in all types. Pancreas divisum(PD) occurs when the ventral and dorsal ducts of the embryonic pancreas fail to fuse during the second month of fetal development. The coexistence of PBM and PD is an infrequent ***, we report an unusual variant of PBM associated with PD in a pediatric patient, in whom an anomalous communication existed between the CBD and dorsal pancreatic *** SUMMARY A boy aged 4 years and 2 mo was hospitalized for abdominal pain with nausea and jaundice for 5 d. Abdominal ultrasound showed cholecystitis with cholestasis in the gallbladder, dilated middle-upper CBD, and a strong echo in the lower CBD, indicating biliary stones. The diagnosis was extrahepatic biliary obstruction caused by biliary stones, which is an indication for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP). ERCP was performed to remove biliary stones. During the ERCP, we found a rare communication between the CBD and dorsal pancreatic duct. After clearing the CBD with a balloon, an 8.5 Fr 4-cm pigtail plastic pancreatic stent was placed in the biliary duct through the major papilla. Six months later, his biliary stent was removed after he had no symptoms and normal laboratory tests. In the following 4-year period, the child grew up normally with no more attacks of abdominal *** We consider that ERCP is effective and safe in pediatric patients with PBM combined with PD, and can be the initial therapy to manage such cases,especially when it is combined with aberrant communication between the CBD and dorsal pancreatic duct.

High-performance spherical LiVPO4F/C cathode enabled by facile spray pyrolysis

LiVPO4F suffers problems of difficulty in synthesis and poor conductivity. To solve these,herein sub-micro spherical LiVPO4F/C is synthesized from a highly-reactive hollow VPO4/C sphere that is derived from a facile and fast spray pyrolysis for the first time. Uniform carbon coating layer with a thickness of 5–8 nm is observed on the surface of the particles,helping to improve the electronic conductivity,suppress the particle growth and protect the particles from corrosion by the electrolyte. The particles are shaped as fine sub-micro spheres,which are beneficial for shortening the distance for Li+ transport. Rietveld refinement for the X-ray diffraction pattern of as-prepared sample shows high-purity triclinic LiVPO4F with an enlarged lattice volume,enabling faster Li+ transport in the prepared material. Accordingly,the resulted LiVPO4F/C demonstrates superior electrochemical properties,delivering 135.4,91.1 mA hg-1 at 1,40 C respectively,and remaining the capacity of 93.3 mA hg-1 after 500 cycles at 20 C with the retention of 95.0%. The method introduced here provides an efficient way to address the serious problems of preparing high-purity Li VPO4F with good conductivity.

The Coronavirus disease is the contagious disease. Clinical manifests vary from no symptoms, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and even severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organs failure. Recently, three of new beta-coronaviruses have emerged to cause serious and widespread illness and death, such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronaviruses (SARS-CoV), middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronaviruses (MERS-CoV), and 2019-nCoV (the causative pathogen of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The COVID-19 is continuing to spread globally. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms have not yet been fully clarified. Since the similarity of the pathological features among 2019-nCoV, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, we could speculate the biological features of current COVID-19 by researching those of MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. Therefore, we analyzed expression levels of miRNA and mRNA profiles of MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV and 2019-nCoV from five public GEO datasets (Table S1). As a result, we found 16 miRNAs potentially target a group of hub genes clustering together to tune the immune response. Notably, viral RNAs have the ability to sponge miR-500a-5p and miR-501-5p, indicating viral RNAs sequestering these two miRNAs to trigger genes expression and contribute to pathogenesis. We hope this study will pave the way to better understand 2019-nCoV pathogenesis and develop the innovative therapeutics.

Laparoscopic fenestration of multiple giant biliary mucinous cystadenomas of the liver

Biliary cystadenomas of the liver are rare, cystic neoplasms of the biliary ductal system usually occur in middle aged women. We report a case of synchronous multiple huge biliary mucinous cystadenomas with unique features. This is, according to our knowledge, the first report in the literature about three synchronously occurring hepatobiliary cystadenomas. Cystadenomas have a strong tendency to recur, particularly following incomplete excision, and a potential of malignant transformation. A therapeutic re-evaluation may be necessary when the diagnosis of hepatobiliary cystadenoma is made after the operation and an open liver resection should be considered.

Poorly differentiated carcinoma of the rectum with aberrant immunophenotype: A case report

We report a case of a poorly differentiated epithelial tumour of the rectum with a highly pleomorphic morphology and an aberrant immunophenotype, including the expression of epithelial markers, the focal parameter of neuroendocrine differentiation, and the unexpected detection of CD-117 overexpression. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our clinic complaining of rectal bleeding and weight loss. Colonoscopy showed an ulcerative bleeding mass located about 8 cm from the anal verge. Abdominal and pelvis CT scans demonstrated a large low-density lesion with extracanalicular growth from the middle rectum, with local lymph-node spread, and without tumour infiltration of other pelvic organs, or evidence of distant intra-abdominal spread. The patient underwent a low anterior resection for rectal cancer together with wide resection of lymph nodes. In immunohistochemical analysis, pankeratin and Epithelial Membrane Antigen (EMA) immunolabeling proved the epithelial nature of the tumor cells. Chromogranin A and Leukocyte Common Antigen (LCA) were negative, whereas CD-56 expression was scanty and Neuron Specific Enolase (NSA) was heavily and diffusely expressed. Ki67 immunoexpression was particularly increased. Interestingly, the intense c-kit immunoreactivity (100%) was a common feature. The above phenotypic and immunohistochemical profile was consistent with an anaplastic carcinoma of the large intestine, with focal neuroendocrine differentiation and diffuse immunoreactivity to c-kit protein. Given the resistance of this tumor to conventional chemotherapy and radiation, the incidence of the c-kit alteration may represent a novel approach to a gene-directed treatment using a c-kit inhibitor (STI571) similar to that which has been proposed in GISTs.
