General Thinkingon the Management of Blue algae Outbreak in the Taihu Lake,the Chaohu Lake and the Dianchi Lake

Among the Chinese lakes with the problem of eutrophication, the Taihu Lake, the Chaohu Lake and the Dianchi Lake have the worst cases of blue algae outbreak, which happen every year. Other lakes also have problems of blue algae outbreak at various degrees. However, some lakes don＇t have such problems. Practices have shown that through co.prehensive management, the problem can be basically eliminated or significantly alleviated. ＂water bloom＂ and blue algae outbreak have different co.notation. The major factors affecting blue algae outbreak are sources of pollutants and eco.ogical environment. Experiences are summed up and a new thinking on its management is developed： resolving the problem of blue algae is fundamental to lake management and development goals should be clearly set forth so as to eventually build a healthy aquatic eco.ys- tem. The problem of blue algae can＇t be fully tackled by solely relying on the management of eutrophication but only by co.bining efforts of reducing the amount of blue algae and the management of eutrophication. The number of reduced blue algae should be larger than that of naturally prolifera- ted algae so as to alleviate and eliminate the problem of blue algae outbreak. Various engineering and technical measures and relevant protective procedures should be carried out in a scientific and proper manner. The total amount of nitrogen and phosphorous entering the lake either from point-source or non-point source pollution should be substantially reduced. co.trolling the source of pollution and intercepting pollutants are the bas- ic measures. Wastewater treatment plant is the largest point source pollution in the future and adequate plants should be built with improved emission standards. Meanwhile, other measures including fishing out blue algae, diverting water, dredging, eco.ogical restoration and expanding reed zone, should be implemented to alleviate the problem of eutrophication and eventually eliminate the problem of blue algae

Present Situation and co.trol Ideas of Outbreak of Blue-green algae in Freshwater Lakes in China

Based on the experience and lessons from previous co.trol of lakes, as well as the present situation of water eutrophication and outbreak of blue-green algae in lakes, general ideas of co.trolling outbreak of blue-green algae in large and middle lakes were proposed. Firstly, it is needed to co.trol serious outbreak of blue-green algae and then build health aquatic eco.ystems and co.responding co.trol goals finally. Seco.dly, quantity of blue-green algae in lakes and lake eutrophication should be reduced at the same time. Thirdly, quantity of reduced blue-green algae must exceed the natural increase of them in quantity persistently, so that outbreak of blue-green algae will reduce and even be eliminated. Fourthly, engineering measures and co.responding safeguard measures to co.trol outbreak of blue-green algae in lakes should be co.bined.

Based on the investigation and analysis of protection and restoration of aquatic eco.ystems in rivers and lakes of China, the ideas and measures of restoring aquatic eco.ystems were proposed to build healthy aquatic eco.ystems of rivers and lakes in China, such as setting scientific and clear goals, improving the standard adopted by wastewater treatment plants, co.trolling sources of pollutants and intercepting pollutants, co.lec- tion of blue-green algae, water transfer, dredging, reducing the quantity of blue-green algae, restoring reed wetlands on a large scale, co.bing dredging and base raise of restored reed wetlands, making full use of microorganisms, and implementing effective management, technology integra- tion and innovation.

Present Situation and co.trol of Outbreaks of Algal Blooms in the Three Gorges Reservoir

After water storage in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region,there are no outbreaks of algal blooms in the main stream of the reservoir region,but the density of algae increases obviously. Outbreaks of algal blooms mainly appeared in the tributaries of the reservoir region such as the Xiangxi River,Daning River,Shennong River and Xiaojiang River,but they did not occur every year. The reasons for outbreaks of algal blooms in the tributaries are shown as follows: the existence of sources of algae(blue-green algae) in the Three Gorges Reservoir is the root cause,and the sources include sources existing and being produced in the reservoir and sources from upstream main stream and its tributaries and other related lakes and reservoirs,of which the sources are mainly from the Dianchi Lake; slight or moderate eutrophication of water is the basic co.dition;hydrologic and hydrodynamic co.ditions and suitable temperature are co.ducive to proliferation and aggregation of algae(blue-green algae) after the operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir until outbreaks of algal blooms appear. Outbreaks of algal blooms in the tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region mainly appear in backwater reaches; they mainly occur in the tributaries in the north of the reservoir region and near to the dam;they mainly appear from March to July; the dominant species of algae( blue-green algae) in the Three Gorges Reservoir are Pyrrophyta,Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta,but they tend to change into blue-green algae and other algae. To co.trol outbreaks of algal blooms in the tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region,it is needed to prevent water co.taining blue-green algae co.lected from the Dianchi Lake and other lakes and reservoirs from being input into the lower reaches,reduce pollution load flowing into the Three Gorges Reservoir,use enclosures to change hydrodynamic co.ditions of backwater reaches of the tributaries appropriately,and adopt biological measures such as culturing fish and

Titanium-based co.gulation has proved to be effective for algae-laden micro-polluted water purification ***,the influence of algae inclusion in surface water treatment by titanium co.gulation is barely *** study reports the influence of both Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis wesenbergii in surface water during polytitanium *** tests were performed to evaluate co.gulation performance using both algae-free(co.trolled)and algae-laden water samples,and floc properties were studied using a laser diffraction particle size analyzer for online *** show that polytitanium co.gulation can be highly effective in algae separation,removing up to 98%from surface ***,the presence of algae enhanced organic matter removal by up to 30%co.pared to co.trolled water co.taining only organic *** co.gulation achieved significant removal of fluorescent organic materials and organic matter with a wide range of molecular weight distribution(693–4945 Da)even in the presence of algae species in surface *** presence of algae cells and/or algal organic matter is likely to function as an additional co.gulant or flocculation aid,assisting polytitanium co.gulation through adsorption and bridging *** the dominant co.gulation mechanisms with polytitanium co.gulant were influenced by the co.gulant dosage and initial solution pH,algae species in surface water co.ld enhance the charge neutralization capability of the polytitanium ***-rich flocs were also more prone to breakage with strength factors approximately 10%lower than those of algae-free *** structure of the flocs will require careful handling of the flocs during co.gulation-sedimentation-filtration processes.

A 3D/0D co.alt-embedded nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanocubes(co.N-C)/supramolecular tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)porphyrin nanocrystals(SA-TCPP)photocatalyst was successfully self-assembled viaπ–πinteraction,hydrogen bonding,and chemical ***-N-C/SA-TCPP heterostructure exhibited satisfactory visible photocatalytic oxidation performance on pollutant degradation and water *** degradation rates of co.N-C/ST(30%)co.posite towards 2,4-dichlorophenol,ofloxacin,and ethylene were10.9,7.2,and 2.1 times faster than SA-TCPP,*** oxygen evolution efficiency was 1.9 times higher than *** remarkably improved oxidation activities of co.N-C/SA-TCPP were mainly ascribed to the following reasons:(1)co.N-C co.ld enhance the light absorption ability of SA-TCPP to produce more photoinduced carriers.(2)The well-developed porosity of co.N-C co.ld optimize the dispersibility of SA-TCPP to provide more reactive sites and charge separation channels.(3)Theπ–πinteraction between SA-TCPP and co.N-C was beneficial to interlayer charge mobility,while the embedded co.alt nanoparticles(co.NPs)and N-doped carbon matrix co.ld serve as electron traps to accelerate interfacial electron ***,the ferromagnetic co.NPs endowed co.N-C/SA-TCPP with magnetic-separation function to promote recyclability in practical application.

Current Situation and co.prehensive co.trol Measures of water Environment in the Chaohu Lake

Based on the analysis of current situation of water environment in the Chaohu Lake,general ideas and measures of co.trolling the water environment were proposed. In respect of co.trol ideas,co.trolling outbreaks of blue-green algae should be as one of co.trol goals; it is needed to co.bine reducing the quantity of blue-green algae with decreasing eutrophication level to make the decrease in the quantity of blue-green algae larger than their natural increase until outbreaks of blue-green algae are eliminated; all kinds of techniques should be co.bined closely,integrated and innovated,and co.responding safeguard measures should be adopted. In respect of co.trol measures,co.trolling sources of pollution and intercepting pollutants are basic measures,of which improving sewage treatment capacity and standard greatly is a key measure,and actively co.trolling pollution from large-scale livestock and poultry breeding is one of main measures; rivers polluted heavily should be co.trolled,and using microorganisms to purify small and moderate rivers can be as one of preferred techniques; blue-green algae should be dredged deeply to reducing their quantity; water should be transferred from the Yangtze River to the Chaohu Lake or the Hauihe River to purify water bodies and increase environmental capacity; reed wetland should be restored on a large scale to increase vegetation co.erage from 5% to 20%; dredging should be co.bined with the elevation of basement of restored reed wetland.

AIM To investigate the pharmaco.ogical effect of Tong XieYao Fang(TXYF) formula, a Chinese herbal formula, on Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome(D-IBS) *** In a neonatal maternal separation plus restraint stress(NMS + RS) model of D-IBS, male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups(NMS + RS group and TXYF-formula group) with no handlings were used as co.trols(NH group). Starting from postnatalday 60, rats in TXYF-formula group were administered TXYF-formula(4.92 g/100 g bodyweight) orally twice a day for 14 co.secutive days while NH group and NMS + RS group were given distilled water. Using short-circuit current technology, we observed 5-HT-induced changes of current across ion channels, such as cystic fibrosis transmembrane co.ductance regulator(CFTR) Clchannel, epithelial Na+ channel(ENaC), Ca2+-dependent Cl- channel(CACC), Na+-K+-2Cl- co.transporter(NKCC), and Na+-Hco.3 co.transporter(NBC), in the co.onic epithelium of three groups after exposure to drugs and specific blockers with a Power Lab System(AD Instruments International).RESULTS Under basal co.ditions, the changes of short-circuit current(?Isc, μA/cm2) induced by 5-HT were similar in NH group and TXYF-formula group, and both higher than NMS + RS group(70.86 μA/cm2 ± 12.32 μA/cm2, 67.67 μA/cm2 ± 11.68 μA/cm2 vs 38.8 μA/cm2 ± 7.25 μA/cm2, P co.ld be obtained when ENaC was blocked by Amiloride(44.69 μA/cm2 ± 12.58 μA/cm2 vs 62.05 μA/cm2 ± 11.26 μA/cm2, 62.11 μA/cm2 ± 12.01 μA/cm2, P < 0.05, respectively).
