By means of the vitrinite reflectance and U-Th/He dating of apatite and zircon in cut- ting samples from the T3x-K1j formations in the Yuanba （元坝） area of Northeast Sichuan （四川） Basin, a correlation has been established between the He-derived age and depth/temperature in this area assuming helium closure temperature of apatite in this area being 95 ℃. Mesozoic strata （T3x-Kd＇） experienced helium closure temperature of apatite approaching 95 ℃, but didn＇t reach the helium closure temperature of zircon （ca. 170-190 ℃） although some reached the highest pa- laeogeothermal temperature of about 170 ℃. The Mesozoic strata in the Yuanba area experienced an important uplift and denudation during Paleogene-Neogene periods （0.2-36.4 Ma）, the erosion rate being about 109.9 m/Ma. The K1] Formation and overlying strata experienced a maximum de- nudation loss of about 4 000 m. Geotemperatures gradually fell to the helium closure temperature of apatite and then fell further to the current temperature. The thermal evolution history of this area indicates that the maximum palaeogeothermal temperature of Mesozoic strata was close to 170- 190 ℃, prior to the strata being uplifted. During the period between 176 and 36 Ma, the palaeogeo- thermal temperature fell to 95-170 ℃. and after 36 Ma, it continued to fall to the present geotem- perature of less than 95 ℃.

Well Zheng-1 is located in the combined area of the central uplift and the north Tianshan piedmont depression in the Junggar Basin. Two oil-bearing beds are recognized at 4788–4797 m of the Lower Cretaceous Tugulu Formation (K1tg) and 4808.5–4812.5 m of the Lower Jurassic Sangonghe Formation (J1s). The geochemical characteristics of family composition, carbon isotopic composition, saturated hydrocarbons, sterane and terpane biomarkers and carotane of two crude oils are described in this paper. The results show that the geochemical characteristics of the two crude oils are basically similar to each other, indicating they were all derived mainly from the high mature, brine, algae-rich lake facies sediments. Oil-source correlation revealed that crude oils of the two beds were derived mainly from the source rocks of Permian and mixed by the oil derived from the source rocks of Jurassic and Triassic. This is consistent with the geological background with several sets of source rocks in the area studied.

Stable carbon isotopes of gaseous alkanes as genetic indicators inferred from laboratory pyrolysis experiments of various marine hydrocarbon source materials from southern China

Using high pressure and geological condition simulation vessels, we conducted hydrous pyrolysis experiments of kerogen, solid bitumen and liquid hydrocarbons in southern China in order to study the processes of gas generation and derive geo- chemical indicators of gas genesis under approximate pressure and temperature. The results indicate that gas generation productivity of different marine material decreased in the ganic matter （solid bitumen and heavy oil）, and kerogen. order of crude oil （light oil and condensate）, dispersed soluble or- Under identical temperature-pressure regimes, pyrolysates derived from kerogen and dispersed soluble organic matter display drastically different geochemical characteristics. For example, the δ13Cc02-δ13C1 values of gaseous products from dispersed soluble organic matter are greater than 20%o, whereas those from kerogen are less than 20%~. The 813C1 values of pyrolysates from different marine hydrocarbon sources generally increase with pyrolysis temperature, but are always lower than those of the source precursors. The δ13C values of ethane and propane in the pyrolysates also increase with increasing pyrolysis temperature, eventually approaching that of their sources, at peak hydro- carbon generation. At high-over mature stages, the δ13C values of ethane and propane are often greater than those of their sources but close to those of coal gases, and thus become ineffective as gas genetic indicators. Ln（CffC3） can clearly distin- guish kerogen degradation gas from oil cracking gas and Ln（CJC2）-（δ13C1-δ13C2） can be an effective indicator for distinguishing oil cracking gas from dispersed soluble organic matter cracking gas.

Based on a conceptual model of hydrocarbon microseepage, a macro-sized experimental equipment used the matched mixtures of cement and quartz sand as simulated caprock and its overlying strata is first set up to simulate the processes of hydrocarbon microseepage and its nearsurface expressions. The results of the simulation experiments suggest that simulated caprock and its overlying strata have a certain sealed capability; hydrocarbon microseepage is dominated by the pressure of point gas source, and temperature plays only a subordinate role; on the path of hydrocarbon microseepage, the distribution of hydrocarbon concentration is fan-shaped; differential adsorption of aikanes by the simulated caprock and its overlying strata results in the occurrence of a chromatographic effect. Different migrating patterns within simulated caprock are shown by the ratio of i-butane to n-butane. The concentration of hydrocarbon in the surface soil has good correspondence with the pressure of point gas source. These simulation results are significant to further study of the mechanism of anomalies recovered in surface geochemistry exploration.

The existence of thermal storage will correspondingly increase the temperature of surrounding strata and promote the continuous expansion,volatilization,upward migration,and loss of gas in the *** a result,a low-concentration gas field will be formed in the strata above geothermal *** reservoirs could in turn heat formation water and increase the solubility of soluble inorganic salts in the surrounding rocks and the total dissolved solids(TDS)content in the formation *** water can strongly wet and permeate strata,the dissolved inorganic salts migrate into upper strata along with water,giving rise to the formation of a high-concentration inorganic salt field in the strata above geothermal reservoirs.A higher geothermal reservoir temperature corresponds to more significant characteristics mentioned ***,a medium-to-high temperature geothermal system has a surface geochemical anomaly pattern of high inorganic salt concentrations and low gas concentrations(also referred to as the high-salt and low-gas pattern).This pattern is applied to the surface geochemical exploration of the two geothermal fields in Guangdong Province,i.e.,the Huangshadong geothermal field in Huizhou City and the Xinzhou geothermal field in Yangjiang City,revealing low-concentration gas fields above *** application results also show that the exposed thermal spring water in both geological fields has higher concentration of dissolved inorganic salt than the surface water and nearby seawater,forming high-amplitude anomalies on the surface above geothermal *** characteristics,as well as the measured temperature at known geothermal wells,verify the validity of the high-salt and low-gas pattern of medium-to-high temperature geothermal systems proposed in this ***,the high-salt and low-gas pattern proposed predicts three favorable medium-to-high temperature geothermal zones in the surface geochemical exploration of the Shiba Basin nea

Early dolomitisation of the Lower-Middle Ordovician cyclic carbonates in northern Tarim Basin, NW China

High-frequency metre-scale cycles are present within the Lower-Middle Ordovician carbonate successions in northern Tarim Basin, NW China. These metre-scale cycles were variably dolomitised from top to bottom. Three types of replacive dolomites were recognised, including dololaminite(very finely to finely crystalline, planar-s to nonplanar-a dolomite;type-1), patterned dolomite(finely crystalline, planar-s dolomite; type-2), and mottled dolomite(finely to medium crystalline,nonplanar-a(s) dolomite; type-3). Petrographic evidence indicate these dolomites were primarily deposited in supratidal to restricted subtidal environments, and formed in near-surface to shallow burial realms. Geochemically, all types of dolomites have similar δ13C and 87Sr/86 Sr ratios comparable to calcite precipitated in equilibrium with the Early-Middle Ordovician seawater. These geochemical attributes indicate that these dolomites were genetically associated and likely formed from connate seawater-derived brines. Of these, type-1 dolomite has δ18O values(.4.97‰ to.4.04‰ VPDB) slightly higher than those of normal seawater dolomite of the Early-Middle Ordovician age. Considering the absence of associated evaporites within type-1 dolomite, its parental fluids were likely represented by slightly evaporated(i.e., mesosaline to penesaline) seawater with salinity below that of gypsum precipitation. More depleted δ18O values(.7.74‰ to.5.20‰ VPDB) of type-2 dolomite and its stratigraphic position below type-1 dolomite indicate the generation of this dolomite from mesosaline to penesaline brines at higher temperatures in near-surface to shallow burial domains. Type-3 dolomite yields the most depleted δ18O values(–9.30‰to –7.28‰ VPDB), pointing to that it was most likely formed from coeval seawater-derived brines at highest temperatures in a shallow burial setting. The mechanism of hydrogen sulfide(H_2S) generation plays a key role in the exploration and development of marine high-sulfur natural gas, of which the major targets are the composition and isotope characteristics of sulfur-containing *** source rocks, reservoir rocks, natural gases and water-soluble gases from Sichuan Basin have been analyzed with an online method for the content of H_2S and isotopic composition of different sulfur-containing compounds. The results of comparative analysis show that the sulfur-containing compounds in the source rocks are mainly formed by bacterial sulfate reduction(BSR), and the sulfur compounds in natural gas, water and reservoir are mainly formed by thermal sulfate reduction(TSR). Moreover, it has been shown that the isotopically reversion for methane and ethane in high sulfur content gas is caused by TSR. The sulfur isotopic composition of H_2S in natural gas is inherited from the gypsum or brine of the same or adjacent layer,indicating that the generation and accumulation of H_2S have the characteristics of either a self-generated source or a near-source.

The source and formation characteristics of the Zhujiadun gas reservoirs in the Yancheng Sag, Subei Basin

The Yancheng Sag is a favorable exploration area in the Subei Basin. However, the key geological understanding of the natural gas source and reservoir formation characteristics of the sag is still controversial. Based on a set of organic geochemical experiments conducted on natural gas and associated condensate oil of the first member of the Funing Formation (E1f1) in well YCh5 and well data analysis, the oil-gas resources and reservoir formation model in the Zhujiadun gas reservoir in the Yancheng Sag, Subei Basin, were investigated. The results of this study are as follows. (1) The natural gas in the Zhujiadun gas reservoir is dry gas with high methane content, low heavy hydrocarbon content, and high maturity. The characteristics of carbon and hydrogen isotopes in the natural gas indicate that the natural gas is oil-cracked gas, which mainly originates from the source rocks of the Permian Qixia Formation. (2) The condensate oil from well YCh5 with a high degree of maturity has a high pristane/phytane ratio, low gamma-paraffin abundance, and low tricyclic terpene abundance, indicating a mixture of the Upper Paleozoic condensate oil and Cenozoic crude oil. The saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons have similar δ13C values to the Cenozoic continental crude oil. These features suggest two sources of condensate oil. (3) Oils generated from the source rocks of the Qixia Formation were cracked into highly mature gas after deep burial, which migrated along large faults into the sandstones of the E1f1 and K1t1 members. This type of reservoir was effectively preserved beneath the overlying mudstone cap rocks. Therefore, it can be inferred that a play fairway might occur in the eastern zone of the faults connected to the Paleozoic source rocks in the Yancheng Sag since this zone has similar petroleum geological conditions to well YCh5. Therefore, this zone is a favorable area for further exploration.

High quality marine source rock （HQMSR） is the key prerequisite for medium to large hydrocarbon accumulations. However, the forming mechanism remains unclear. On the basis of the in-vestigation for the geodynamic setting of the Middle-Upper Yangtze during the Early Cambrian in dif-ferent spatial scales and the analysis of trace elements, the main controlling factors of the development of high quality marine source rock are discussed, with specific consideration of the burial rate of the organic matter. The formation of high quality marine source rocks is suggested to be the result of a co-ordinated development and the interaction between geological environments and organism evolution during the major geological transition periods. We perceived that the burial rate of organic matter was influenced by the primary productivity and its burial conditions. The abundance of autogenetic molyb-denum gained directly by the chemical speciation analysis of rocks could be used as a proxy for the burial organic matter. The burial rate of autogenetic molybdenum and the sedimentary organics in modern marine environments could be used to estimate the sedimentary organics in ancient environ-ments effectively.

Methane in soil gas and its transfer to the atmosphere in the Yakela condensed gas field in the Tarim Basin,Northwest China

In this study, by analyzing CH4 concentration and 613CCH4 in soil-gas profiles, the potentials of CH4 gas transfer from ground to atmosphere were studied at four representative sectors in the Yakela condensed gas field in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang, China. These are： 1） the oil-gas interface sector, 2） fault sector, 3） oil-water interface sector, 4） an external area. Variation in CH4 in soil-gas profiles showed that CH4 microseepage resulted from the migration of subsurface hydrocarbon from deep-buried reservoirs to the earth＇s surface. It was found that CH4 from deep-buried reservoirs could migrate upwards to the surface through faults, fissures and permeable rocks, during which some CH4 was oxidized and the unoxidized methane remained in the soil or was emitted into the atmosphere. The lowest level of CH4 at the soil-gas profile was found at the CH4 gas-phase equilibrium point at which the CH4 migration upwards from deep-buried reservoirs and the CH4 diffusion downwards from the atmosphere met. The 613CcH4 and ethane, propane in soil gas exhibited thermogenic characteristics, suggesting the occurrence of CH4 microseepage from deep-buried reservoirs. A linear correlation analysis between CH4 concentrations in soil gas and temperature, moisture, pH, Eh, Ec and particle size of soil indicated that both soil Eh and soil temperature could affect CH4 concentration in soil gas while soil pH could indirectly influence soil methanotrophic oxidation via impacting soil Eh.
