Mixed-method study on medicinal herb collection in relation to wildlife conservation:the case of giant pandas in china

Medicinal herb collection has historical and cultural roots in many rural communities in developing countries.Areas where herb collection occurs may overlap with biodiversity hotspots and crucial habitat of endangered and threatened species.However,impacts of such practices on wildlife are unknown and possibly underestimated,perhaps due to the elusive nature of such activities.We examined this phenomenon in Wolong Nature Reserve,china,a protected area in the South-Central china biodiversity hotspot that also supports a community of Tibetan,Qiang and Han people who use herb collection as a supplementary source of livelihood.We adopted a participatory approach in which we engaged local people in outlining spatial and temporal dynamics of medicinal herb collection practices.We found that the overall spatial extent of herb collection increased in the past two decades.We then overlaid herb collection maps with localities of giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)feces collected over two time points in the reserve.Using a Bayesian parameter estimation,we found evidence for declined giant panda occurrence in the areas most recently impacted by emerging medicinal herb collection.Our methodology demonstrates the potential power of integrating participatory approaches with quantitative methods for processes like herb collection that may be difficult to examine empirically.We discuss future directions for improving explanatory power and addressing uncertainty in this type of mixed-method,interdisciplinary research.This work has implications for future attempts to understand whether and how prevalent but subtle human activities may affect wildlife conservation.

Historic distribution and recent loss of tigers in china

Historical records can provide important evidence of changes in distributions of wildlife species.Here we discuss the distribution of the tiger(Panthera tigris Linnaeus,1758)over the past 2000 years in china based on 2635 historical records.We also compare tiger distributions outlined in these records with ecosystem type maps.Throughout this time period,tigers maintained a broad distribution across 7 biomes(from forests to deserts).However,in recent decades the range has been significantly condensed.Today,only 2 populations remain,neither of which is independently viable.Tigers have completely disappeared from the temperate broadleaf and mixed forests of central china,a region that was traditionally their most important biome in china.The continued presence of wild tigers in china is highly dependent on significant conservation measures.

Spatial density estimate of the snow leopard, Panthera uncia, in the Central Tibetan Plateau, china

Knowledge of large carnivore population abundance is essential for wildlife management and conservation,but these data are often difﬁcult to obtain in inherently low-density species.In particular,the snow leopard,Panthera uncia,an enigmatic cat occupying remote mountains in Central Asia,has received insufﬁcient assessments of its population abundance because of logistical and methodological challenges.Here,we aimed to develop a robust density estimation of snow leopards based on 81 days of camera trapping within a contiguous and previously un-surveyed 1950 km2 area of habitat on the Tibetan Plateau(Mayue Township,Shenzha County,Tibet Autonomous Region,china).By applying spatially explicit capture–recapture models,we produced an estimate of 1.40(95%CI:1.06–1.84)individuals per 100 km2.Results also suggested sex-speciﬁc variation in the range of movement around activity centers,with male(N=10,σ=4.02)movement considerably greater than female(N=8,σ=1.84)move-ment.Theﬁndings can serve as a reliable baseline reference for assessing the population trends of this endangered felid species with future estimates.This study will provide context to contribute toward a better understanding of ecological factors shaping the distribution and abundance of snow leopards and the related conservation measures needed to sustain their long-term survival on the Tibetan Plateau.

Human-carnivore conflict in china: a review of current approaches with recommendations for improved management

Human-wildlife conflict(HWC)is a conservation concern that increasingly threatens the continued existence of some of the world’s most endangered species.With an increase in human population,urban sprawl and subsequent encroachment on wild land,human and wildlife interaction has become inevitable.In the majority of cases,this interaction results in a negative outcome for humans,wildlife or both.In china,these key elements,along with a decrease in wild prey species,have resulted in the expansion of HWC encounters,and the need for alleviating this conflict has become a conservation priority.Loss of human life,livestock and/or crops is most often the catalysts that fuel HWC.Techniques to alleviate conflict around the world have included preventative measures and mitigation techniques,such as financial compensation and other incentive programs.Both types of measures have had variable success.We review the current status of human-carnivore conflict management in china,and,drawing lessons from around the globe,we make recommendations for improving conservation management in china.For example,an increase in law enforcement in nature reserves is vital to reducing human disturbance in prime carnivore habitat,thereby reducing conflict encounters.Also,modifications to current wildlife compensation programs,so that they are linked with preventative measures,will ensure that moral hazards are avoided.Furthermore,investigating the potential for a community self-financed insurance scheme to fund compensation and increasing efforts to restore wild prey populations will improve the outcome for wildlife conservation.Ultimately,HWC management in china will greatly benefit from an integrative approach.

Climate change has been linked to well-documented changes in physiology,phenology,species distributions,and in some cases,extinction.Projections of future change point to dramatic shifts in the states of many ecosystems.Accommodating these shifts to effectively conserve biodiversity in the context of uncertain climate regimes represents one of the most difficult challenges faced by conservation planners.A number of adaptation strategies have been proposed for managing species and ecosystems in a changing climate.However,there has been little guidance available on integrating climate change adaptation strategies into contemporary conservation planning frameworks.The paper reviews the different approaches being used to integrate climate change adaptation into conservation planning,broadly categorizing strategies as continuing and extending on "best practice" principles and those that integrate species vulnerability assessments into conservation planning.We describe the characteristics of a good adaptation strategy emphasizing the importance of incorporating clear principles of flexibility and efficiency,accounting for uncertainty,integrating human response to climate change and understanding trade-offs.

Tiger conservation in the Year of the Tiger,2010

Since the last Year of the Tiger in 1998,the world’s tiger(Panthera tigris Linnaeus,1758)population has declined by nearly 50%,the South china tiger(Panthera tigris amoyensis Hilzheimer,1905)may be extinct,tigers have all but disappeared from Cambodia and most of Laos,and tigers were extirpated from two of India’s premier reserves,Panna and Sariska(Walston et al.2010).Analyses of available habitat in 2006 demonstrated that tiger range had contracted 93%in the past 150 years(Dinerstein et al.2007).But as field conservationists began to search the remaining 7%,a more alarming trend become clear:many areas with good habitat were devoid of tigers due to unchecked poaching of tigers and their prey.The high black-market value of tigers-primarily fueled by the Traditional Chinese Medicine market-makes the conservation challenges more similar to those of rhinos than of other big cats.

Fish trader’s gender and niches in a declining coral reef fishery:implications for sustainability

Introduction:The state of natural resources is greatly influenced by market access.Consequently,resource trader's incentives,decisions,and willingness to comply with manage-ment an influence efforts to achieve sustainabi lity.Trader's impacts will depend on their economic niches,which are influenced by cultural norms,skill,social relationshi ps,profitability,and the spatial scale of markets.Consequently,we examined the potential of traders to influence fisheries'sustainability by evaluating their jobs,gender roles,religion,socioeconomic status,association and perceptions of management systems,and future plans.We studied 142 traders in 19 Kenyan coral reef fisheries landing sites distributed among four gear management systems.Outcomes:We found a strong role of gender,geography,and religion in the participation of these fisheries that was primarily driven by fisheries'profitability.The associations suggest that overfished fisheries should retain traders with low education,capital,and savings-often women;whereas sustainable stocks favor the opposite characteristics,and often men.Conclusions:Therefore,managing for increasing yields,profits,and sustainability could exclude women traders unless they successfully access or adopt the more traditional male economic niche.Gender coexistence is most likely to be achieved by managing for inter-mediate resource levels where net production,catch,and fish body size diversity are high.Further,reducing risk and increasing the capital and mobility of women traders should reduce their chances of exclusion when fisheries are sustainable.
