Research on minority representation in academia has not receive serious scholarly attention until recently, apparently due to the belief that academia is a paragon of liberalism, openness and equal opportunity, however, the few studies that were conducted have completely contradicted this assumption. This paper deals with the representation of Arab citizens in Israel＇s academia, universities in particular. The StudyI explores the representation/sub-representation of Arabcitizens in three main areas： The percentage of Arab students （from the BA to the Doctoral level）; representation in faculties; and representation on permanent administrative staff. The paper offers up-to-date and precise data, which we received from the academic institutions themselves, and tries to lay the infrastructure for a broader and more in-depth study, which will deal with the barriers facing Arab citizens in Israeli universities.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the genetic variation in Salamandra infraimmaculata from different breeding site habitats using the Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) method. The results of the dendogram from a hierarchical cluster analysis show that the grouping of S. infraimmaculata as cluster 5 differs from all the other clusters, including the St1 (Tel-Dan stream) population, which was the most predictable. Five Haplogroups (Hg) were characterized. The mean number of alleles per locus in each population (Ne) ranged from 10.566 (Sp1) to 2.720 (Po6). An average estimated heterozygosity (He) by population ranged from 0.100 (Po6) to 0.186 (St1). Population St1, a permanent breeding site where water was available all year round, exhibited the highest level of polymorphism, while population Po6, from the ephemeral breeding site, exhibited the lowest level of polymorphism. Gene flow between clusters showed that clusters 3 and 4 are sources of migrants and also receive gene flow, while clusters 1 and 2 may be a source of migrants but may not receive much gene flow. A phylogenetic analysis, based on clustering using Nei’s genetic distance, demonstrated that the Tel-Dan population is located on a separate branch within its sub-population. The conclusion of the present study shows that the genetic divergence among isolated populations is not correlated to distance but is affected by the variation of habitats.

This study demonstrates how the volatility index （VIX） can help predict the returns for sequential trading days. Using a logit function and previous VIX information, we present an initial attempt to estimate the probability of a positive market return. The estimation procedure is applied to recent data on the S＆P500 and to the 10-year U.S. Treasury Bonds yields. Our findings indicate that such a relationship does exist and is significant, especially for the bond market. We also ran an investment simulation using different VIX scores and found that from 2004 to June 2009, VIX=18 was the score that yielded the highest.

Computational biology plays a significant role in the discovery of new biomarkers, the analyses of disease states and the validation of potential biomarkers. Biomarkers are used to measure the progress of disease or the physiological effects of therapeutic intervention in the treatment of disease. They are also used as early warning signs for various diseases such as cancer and inflammatory diseases. In this review, we outline recent progresses of computational biology application in research on biomarkers discovery. A brief discussion of some necessary preliminaries on machine learning techniques (e.g., clustering and support vector machines—SVM) which are commonly used in many applications to biomarkers discovery is given and followed by a description of biological background on biomarkers. We further examine the integration of computational biology approaches and biomarkers. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of key challenges for computational biology to biomarkers discovery.

academic dishonesty is a disturbing issue in higher education that has been worsening over the years, especially with the appearance of the internet and the e-learning education. This new technology exposes students to the opportunity of using online bank exams and term papers and increases their tendency to cheat. This study investigates student academic dishonesty in the context of traditional and distance-learning courses in higher education. Data from 1,365 students enrolled in academic institutes in the U.S.A and Israel were surveyed to assess their personality and their willingness to commit various acts of academic misconduct. The findings indicate that in both countries dishonest behaviors are greater in face-to-face courses than in online courses. In addition, both American and Israeli students identified with the personality trait of Agreeableness showed a negative correlation with academic dishonesty. Furthermore, Israeli students identified with the personality traits of Conscientiousness and Emotional Stability demonstrated a negative correlation with academic dishonesty. In contrast, the personality trait of Extraversion among American students was found in a positive correlation with academic misconduct. Implications for further research are discussed.

This study investigated the effects of the degree of unsaturation（unsaturity） of long-chain fatty acids on microbial protein content and the activities of transaminases and dehydrogenase in vitro using goat rumen fluid as the cultural *** types of fatty acids,stearic acid（C18：0,group A,control group）,oleic acid（C18：1,n-9,group B）,linoleic acid（C18：2,n-6,group C）,α-linolenic acid（C18：3,n-3,group D）,arachidonic acid（C20：4,n-6,group E）,and eicosapentaenoic acid（C20：5,n-3,group F）,were tested,and the inclusion ratio of each fatty acid was 3%（w/w） in total of culture *** were taken at 0,3,6,9,12,18 and 24 h,respectively,during culture for *** with stearic acid,linoleic acid,a-linolenic acid,and arachidonic acid increased the bacterial protein content,while oleic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid had no significant effects;the protozoal protein content was reduced for all the unsaturated fatty acids,and the magnitude of the reduction appeared to be associated with the degree of unsaturity of fatty *** total microbial protein content was dominantly accounted by the protozoal protein content（about 4-9 folds of the bacterial protein）,and only increased by linoleic acid,but reduced by oleic acid,arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic *** were no significant effects in the activities of both glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase（GOT） and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase（GPT） for all the other fatty acids,except for arachidonic acid which enhanced GOT activity and oleic acid which enhanced GPT *** total dehydrogenase activity was positively correlated with the degree of unsaturation of fatty *** conclusion,the inclusion of 3%of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids increased bacterial protein content,whereas reduced protozoal protein content and enhanced dehydrogenase *** fatty acids with more than three double bonds had detrimental effects on the microbial protein *** work demonstrates for the first time the eff
