Preserving environmental quality of ecotourism sites through community participation in Purulia District of west bengal,India

The importance of valuing environmental resources,especially in ecotourism sites,has become increasingly important over the last two *** is now considered as an important source of livelihood of local stakeholders in backward ***,the preservation of ecotourism sites through community participation seems very important to maintain continued flow of *** study aimed at recognizing the importance of community participation for the preservation of ecotourism *** this,this study executed a survey based on non-probability sampling in two ecotourism sites(Garpanchkot and Baranti)covering 100 respondents in Purulia District,west bengal of *** central issue of this study was to assess the tendency of community participation for the conservation of ecotourism sites and find the optimum condition for offering participatory labour *** study showed that the participation of young people is high,and the majority of respondents are aware of the importance in protecting ecotourism *** respondents were too poor to offer money,the contingent valuation method(CVM)was used to elicit their willingness to pay(WTP)participatory labour time for the conservation of ecotourism ***’age,income,education level,caste,and their perceived environmental quality had significant relationship with their WTP participatory labour time by applying the ordinary least square(OLS)*** was found that the mean WTP participatory labour time of each respondent in a month is approximately 3.64 *** significance of this study is that community participation can improve the sense of belonging,trust,and credibility of ecotourism sites,making them more appreciative of the value and protection of these sites.

Clinical and hematological study of canine Ehrlichiosis with other hemoprotozoan parasites in Kolkata,west bengal,India

Objective:To observe other hemoprotozoan diseases with canine ehrlichiosis und to evaluate the clinical and hematological aspects of dogs naturally infected with ehrlichiosis with other hemoprotozoun ***:Blood was collected for hematological value and Giemsa stained blood smear was made for diagnosis of Ehrlichia *** other hemoprotozoan parasites from naturally infected *** history was taken from the owner and clinical signs and symptoms were ***:A total of 47 cases of ehrlichiosis in dogs were reported with babesiosis(8.51%)and hepatozoonosis(6.38%)hemoprotozoan *** cams,Ehrlichia ewingii,Brucella canis,Babesia gibsoni and Hepatozoon canis were observed under oil immersion lense of microscope in Giemsa stained peripheral blood *** anaemia and neutrophilic leukocytosis were ***:The results of this study stated that clinical and haeinatological changes occurred in canine ehrlichiosis with babesiosis and hepatozoonosis due to *** mixed infection,the disease more severe,and also it depended on immunity of *** gibsoni and Hepatozoon canis with Ehrlichia *** first reported from west bengal state of India by this study.

Bioactive polyphenolic compounds, water-soluble vitamins, in vitro anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and free radical scavenging properties of underutilized alternate crop Amaranthus spinosus L. from Gangetic plain of west bengal

Studies associated with validation of folklore and ethnomedicinal claim of utilization of different plant parts of ‘ spiny amaranth’ (Amaranthus spinosus L.) against degenerative diseases with chemical data, particularly the bioactive polyphenolic compounds and associated anti-degenerative properties are scanty and is the purpose of the present investigations. RP-HPLC coupled photodiode assay was employed for the quantification of twenty-one health promoting bioactive polyphenolic antioxidants derived from phenylpropanoid pathway from different plant parts of Amaranthus spinosus L. for validating organoleptic traditional claims as well as current trends in practice of this underutilized medicinal herb. Further, important water-soluble vitamins [vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B9] present in different plant parts were extracted and estimated through RP-HPLC for validating the claim of their functional food properties. The antioxidant-based functional food property of different plant parts of Amaranthus spinosus were corroborated from the data of in vitro free radical scavenging, metal-chelating, reducing, superoxide radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, anti-protein coagulation, anti-lipid peroxidation and antidiabetic properties. When compared, a positive correlation in accumulation of polyphenolic compounds and water-soluble vitamins tested with antioxidant attributes were noticed for different plant parts, strongly substantiating their phytonutrient properties. Taken as a whole, the present work provides data on organ-specific bioavailability of bioactive polyphenolic antioxidant compounds, water soluble B- vitamins and their functional attributes for validating traditional claims as well as existing trends in consumption of this underutilized medicinal vegetable as low-cost natural antioxidant supplement and functional food, which may encourage their effective exploration and utilization.

Landscape conversion becomes a continuous process in a natural landscape for any strategic *** a forest landscape mosaic,the conversion from non-forest land to forest land implies a constructive *** bio-geographic processes are enriched and developed when the land was converted to forest land in a given landscape *** present study evaluated how the increased forest cover improves the ecological quality of forest in Jhargram District of west bengal State,India,from 1985 to *** quality of forests includes dominance,fragmentation and connectivity,which are the basis ecological indicators of habitat *** address this issue,we extracted forest cover maps of 1985 and 2015 from land use/land cover classification.A grid framework was overlaid on these forest cover maps for patch-matrix model *** landscape ecological indices were used for the measurements of forest landscape quality in 1985 and *** a simple linear regression model was used to compare the ***,forest cover increased in Jhargram District from 1985 to *** comparison of measurement indices depicts that although only a small amount of land was changed into forest land in the study area,this small change has greatly improved the structural compositional quality of the forest *** with 1985,the forest land area increased by about 6930.56 hm^(2) in *** increased forest cover improved the basic landscape ecological characters,such as inter patch connectivity,forest core area,forest habitat dependence,forest habitat dominance and forest edge *** a result,the ecosystem function in Jhargram District has been improved,which again attracts wildlife and enriches biodiversity.

Objective:To study the extent of undernutrition at district level and the socio-economic determinants of underweight children aged 0-71 months in west ***:The data were accessed from the Reproductive and Child Health Survey(RCHS-II),which contained information of 7 SSO children and their *** of socio-economic variables about the associated families of these children had also been taken for our *** study computed weight-for-age z-scores to assess the nutritional status of the children using WHO(2006) ***:The prevalence of underweight varied over the *** with very high prevalence of underweight children were Murshidabad,Burdwan,Purulia,Medinipur, Howrah and South 24 *** prevalent districts for both boys and girls were Jalpaiguri and *** prevalent districts for both boys and girls were South Dinajpur,Nadia and *** percentage of underweight children were more in rural areas among Muslim families with illiterate parents and low standard of *** Murshidabad,Bankura,Nadia, Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts,i.e.,where prevalence of underweight children were higher,the rural and urban differences were *** characteristics like religion,parents’ educational status and standard of living index showed significant effect on the children’s ***:Public intervention programs on the parent’s education and the standard of living of the households at district level should be given high priority to combat the children’s undernutrition problems so far as weight for age is concerned.

Effect of land cover on channel form adjustment of headwater streams in a lateritic belt of west bengal(India)

Present work is exploring the influence of land cover on channel morphology in 34 headwater catchments of the lateritic belt of west ***-parametric tests(Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis)and multivariate analysis(Principal Component Analysis and Canonical Discriminant Function models)have successfully differentiated the performance of land cover on channel morphology adjustment among the three groups of headwater streams(forested,transitional,and agricultural)on the Kunur River Basin(KRB).Spatial Interpolation Techniques reveal that intense land-use change,particularly forest conversion to agricultural land,is significantly increasing channel widths(269%)and cross-section area(78%),whereas agricultural channels become shallower(40%)than would be predicted from forested *** with the dominance of forest and agricultural land are classified as‘C′and‘B′types of streams respectively,as per Rosgen's Stream Classification ***,the work claimed that transitional stream group is the definitive area to exaggerate the river restoration plan to stabilize the anthropogenic deformation on channel morphology.

Studies on seasonal fluctuation of different indices related to filarial vector,Culex quinquefasciatus around foothills of Susunia of west bengal,India

Objective:To collect information on the seasonal activity of filarial vector around foothills of Susunia of west bengal,***:Indoor-resting mosquitoes were collected from the human habitations of 16 *** mosquitoes were identified and examined for different parameters following standard methods recommended by World Health Organization and pioneer ***:Overall man hour density,infection rate,infectivity rate,human blood index and daily mortality rate of the vector were assessed as 10.54%,6.31%,1.38%,77.33%and 13.00%, respectively,which were 12.17%,8.63%,2.26%,100.00%and 17.00%,respectively in the summer *** load of microfilaria,1st stage,2nd stage and 3rd stage larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti in infected vectors were 10.***.7.50,5.56 and 4.68,respectively,which were 11.58,9.90. 6.27 and 5.44,respectively in *** the searched shelters 63.37%,8.16%and 2.08% were found to be invaded by any vector,infected vector and infective vector,respectively,which were 68.75%,12.76%and 3.91%,respectively in ***:Different indices related to the vector were much higher in summer,which indicates that,summer is the most favorable season for transmission of lymphatic filariasis in the study *** data will help to formulate an effective vector control measure.

Fern diversity and biomass at Chilapatta reserve forest of west bengal Terai Duars in sub-humid tropical foothills of Indian eastern Himalayas

We documented the status of fern diversity, biomass and car- bon accumulation at Chilapatta Reserve Forest in Cooch Behar Wildlife Division, west bengal. Stratified random nested quadrat sampling was adopted for analyzing the qualitative and quantitative characters. Nineteen fern species were recorded, of which two are yet to be identified. Identified species were of eight families and nine genera. Highest and lowest frequency recorded were 25.44 and 0.19 while relative frequency varied from 3.16 to 12.25. Fern density ranged from 93 to 13,403 ***^-1. Most of the species were widely distributed. IVI values ranged from 7.54 to 37.45. The above ground portion of ferns accumulated the major portion ofbiomass and carbon.

Impact of forest governance and enforcement on deforestation and forest degradation at the district level:A study in west bengal State,India

According to the United Nations Environmental Programme(UNEP),the world loses 1.0×106hm2forest land through deforestation *** 1.6×106people who depend on forests for livelihood are negatively affected by deforestation and forest *** paper attempts to study the impact of forest governance,enforcement and socio-economic factors on deforestation and forest degradation at the local level in west bengal State,*** study was based on questionnaire survey data during 2020–2021 collected from three western districts(Purulia,Bankura,and Paschim Medinipur)where deforestation and poverty rates are higher than other districts in west bengal *** total number of selected villages was 29,and the total sample households were 693.A stratified random sampling technique was used to collect data,and a questionnaire was *** governance and enforcement indices were constructed using United Nation Development Programme(UNDP)methodology and a step-wise logistic regression model was used to identify the factors affecting deforestation and forest *** result of this study showed that four factors(illegal logging,weak forest administration,encroachment,and poverty)are identified for the causes of deforestation and forest *** is observed that six indices of forest governance(rule of law,transparency,accountability,participation,inclusiveness and equitability,and efficiency and effectiveness)are relatively high in Purulia ***,this study shows that Purulia and Bankura districts follow medium forest governance,while Paschim Medinipur District has poor forest *** enforcement index is found to be highest in Purulia District(0.717)and lowest for Paschim Medinipur District(0.257).Finally,weak forest governance,poor socio-economic conditions of the households,and weak enforcement lead to the deforestation and forest degradation in the study ***,governments should strengthen law enforcement and encour

Altitudinal Distribution of Papilionidae Butterflies along with Their Larval Food Plants in the East Himalayan Landscape of west bengal, India

The altitudinal distribution of Papilionidae butterflies across the East Himalayan Landscape of west bengal, India is presented here. 26 butterfly species are known to occur across 11 altitudinal belts. Species Richness (R) and Species Diversity (H′) are said to be highest between 1200 - 1400 masl (meters above sea level). In contrast, lowest values of Species Richness and Species Diversity occur at the highest altitude of 3000 masl and above. Maximum number of individuals occurs between 900 - 1100 masl while the minimum number of individuals was present at the highest altitude of 3000 masl or above. 35 species of plants belonging to 6 families served as the larval food plant of these butterflies. Thus the presence of suitable larval host plants probably governs the altitudinal distribution of these papilionid species of butterflies. 30.77% of butterfly species are strictly monophagous in nature.
