Ice nucleating particle(INP) measurements were made at two high-altitude stations in India. Aerosols collected on filter paper at Girawali Observatory, Inter University Center for Astronomy & Astrophysics(IGO), and at the Radio Astronomy Center, Ooty(RAC), were activated in deposition mode using a thermal gradient diffusion chamber to determine the INP concentrations. The measurement campaigns at IGO were conducted during 2011, 2013 and 2014, and at RAC during 2013 and 2014. When the aerosol samples were exposed to an ice supersaturation of between 5% and 23% in the temperature range-17.6?C to-22?C, the maximum INP number concentration at IGO and RAC was 1.0 L-1and 1.6 L-1, respectively.A maximum correlation coefficient of 0.76 was observed between the INP number concentration and ice supersaturation. The airmass trajectories analyzed for the measurement campaigns showed that the Arabian Desert and arid regions were the main INP contributors. Elemental analysis of particles showed the presence of Na, Cl, Si, Al, Fe, Cu, Co, Cd, S, Mn and K, as well as some rare-Earth elements like Mo, Ru, La, Ce, V and Zr. When aerosols in the size range 0.5–20 μm were considered, the fraction that acted as INPs was 1 : 104to 1 : 106at IGO, and 1 : 103to 1 : 104at RAC. The higher ratio of INPs to aerosols at RAC than IGO may be attributable to the presence of rare-Earth elements observed in the aerosol samples at RAC, which were absent at IGO.

This paper analyzes the correlation between variations of total and low cloud amounts and the varying features of aerosols related to urban development of Beijing by using the cubic spline fitting method based on the monthly meteorological data of temperature,humidity,precipitation,clouds,and aerosol optical depth （AOD） during *** statistics on the development of the city of Beijing in this period,including the total industrial output,population,residential housing development,highway construction,charcoal production,etc.,is *** the rapid urban development of Beijing over the past 55 years or so,the urban aerosol concentration and composition have *** results indicate that：1） there is a general trend of climate warming and drying in Beijing;2） the total cloud amount in all seasons declines drastically,but lower cloud amount climbs up slightly;3） the high correlations between cloud amount and the indices of Beijing urban development such as the housing area,charcoal production,and road construction show that the variation of cloud amount is closely related to the urban development;4） the changing trend of AOD coincides more closely with the variation of low cloud *** evident drop of total cloud amount is in agreement with the trend of climate warming and drying,while the slight growth of low cloud amount is likely caused by more haze and fog occurrences in the lower troposphere in association with the pollution responsible for the＂darkening＂of Beijing and the surrounding areas.

Communicating meteorological uncertainty allows earlier provision of information on possible future events. The desired benefit is to enable the end-user to start with preparatory protective actions at an earlier time based on the end-user's own risk assessment and decision threshold. The presented results of an interview study,conducted with 27 members of German civil protection authorities, show that developments in meteorology and weather forecasting do not necessarily fit the current practices of German emergency services. These practices are mostly carried out based on alarms and ground truth in a superficial reactive manner, rather than on anticipation based on prognoses or forecasts. Emergency managers cope with uncertainty by collecting, comparing, and blending different information about an uncertain event and its uncertain outcomes within the situation assessment to validate the information. Emergency managers struggle most with an increase of emergency calls and missions due to the impacts of severe weather. Because of the additional expenditures, the weather event makes it even harder for them to fulfill their core duties. These findings support the need for impact-based warnings.

An objective method for discriminating the process of extratropical transition （ET） in tropical cyclones is introduced. With this method, the gridpoint output data of NWP are used to calculate three parameters： storm-relative thickness symmetry （B）, low-level （-VL^L ） and upper-level thermal wind （-VT^U ）. This objective method is easy to calculate and convenient for operational use. To verify the method, this paper uses the NCEP reanalysis data to identify the evolution of ET for ＂Haima＂, a tropical storm （0421） that affected the eastern part of China in 2004. The result shows that the three parameters defined with the objective method are good indicators of the ET process.

An analysis is made to investigate the structure features of the extensive heavy rainfall left by typhoon Matsa, after its landfall in China's Mainland in August 2005, based on a range of observational results, including surface intensive observation data, TBB data from China's FY-2 satellite, and NCEP 1°×1° reanalysis data. The study tries to explore the interaction between atmospheric waves, 3-D atmospheric structures, and typhoon rainbands. Observational facts, diagnostic analysis, and atmospheric wave theory are used to look into the formation mechanism of distant typhoon rainbands. Results show that (1) Matsa rainbands have the features of noticeable wave train distribution and long distance propaga-tion; (2) the typhoon rainbands extend as far as 2000 km northwardly from the typhoon center, with a wavelength of 500―1000 km and a wave period of 12―24 h; (3) the wave structure of Matsa rainbands is closely associated with the corresponding wave variation of the ambient 3-D atmospheric structures, including disturbance vorticity, divergence field, vertical motion field, water vapor flux divergence field, etc. (4) both observational facts and theoretical analysis show that the northward extending typhoon rainbands are associated with the mixed effects of atmospheric inertia wave and internal gravity wave; (5) only under proper atmospheric stratification and vertical wavenumber of gravity wave, can a ty-phoon stimulate such a wave being able to reach such a distance, and result in extending wavy rain-bands.

Statistical characteristics of the equatorial boundary of the nightside auroral particle precipitation

Based on the auroral electron/ion precipitation boundary database observed by the DMSP satellites during 1984–2009, the characteristics of the nightside equatorial boundaries of the electron precipitation（B1E） and the ion precipitation（B1I） in the Northern/Southern Hemispheres（NH/SH） are statistically investigated. The results show： That most of the boundaries are located between magnetic latitude（MLAT） of 60°–70° with the mean MLAT for B1E/B1 I to be 64.30°N/63.22°N and 64.48°S/63.26°S in the NH and SH, respectively, indicating that B1 E and B1 I in both hemispheres are located in conjugated magnetic field lines with B1 E ~1.2° poleward of B1I; that the MLAT of B1 E and B1 I in both hemispheres shift to lower MLAT（from ~70° to ~55°） as geomagnetic activity increases; that MLAT of both B1 E and B1 I and their differences slowly decrease from dusk to midnight with some difference in both hemispheres during different levels of geomagnetic activities; that B1 E and B1 I in both hemisphere decrease linearly with Kp and exponentially with Dst, AE, and SYM-H, respectively, demonstrating that auroral particle precipitation is closely related with geomagnetic activity; that in different magnetic local time（MLT） sectors, the changing rates of the boundaries with Kp are different, and the rates of B1 E are generally larger than that of B1 I, implying that the difference between B1 E and B1 I reduce with increasing geomagnetic activity. Compared with previous studies, the statistical results based on the long-term large database in this paper can well reflect the properties of the equatorial boundaries of auroral precipitation and may be used for physical modeling or space weather forecasting in future.

Cloud distribution characteristics over the Tibetan Plateau in the summer monsoon period simulated by the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator(ACCESS) model are evaluated using COSP [the CFMIP(Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project) Observation Simulator Package]. The results show that the ACCESS model simulates less cumulus cloud at atmospheric middle levels when compared with observations from CALIPSO and CloudSat, but more ice cloud at high levels and drizzle drops at low levels. The model also has seasonal biases after the onset of the summer monsoon in May. While observations show that the prevalent high cloud at 9–10 km in spring shifts downward to 7–9 km,the modeled maximum cloud fractions move upward to 12–15 km. The reason for this model deficiency is investigated by comparing model dynamical and thermodynamical fields with those of ERA-Interim. It is found that the lifting effect of the Tibetan Plateau in the ACCESS model is stronger than in ERA-Interim, which means that the vertical velocity in the ACCESS model is stronger and more water vapor is transported to the upper levels of the atmosphere, resulting in more high-level ice clouds and less middle-level cumulus cloud over the Tibetan Plateau. The modeled radiation fields and precipitation are also evaluated against the relevant satellite observations.
