Indirect contact matters:Mid-flight external trunk perturbation increased unilateral anterior cruciate ligament loading variables during jump-landings

Purpose:To determine the effect of unanticipated mid-flight medial-lateral external perturbation of the upper or lower trunk on anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)loading variable s during ***:Thirty-two participants performed double-leg vertical jump-landings while bilateral kinematics and kinetics were collected under 6conditions(upper or lower trunk perturbation locations;no,left,or right perturbation directions).Two customized catapult apparatuses were created to apply pushing perturbation to participants near the maximal jump ***:The ball contacted participants near the center of mass for the lower-trunk conditions and approximately 23 cm above the center of mass for the upper-trunk *** upper-trunk perturbation,the contralateral leg demonstrated significantly smaller knee flexion angles at initial contact and greater peak knee abduction angles,peak vertical ground reaction forces,peak knee extension moments,and peak knee adduction moments compared to other legs among all *** lower-trunk perturbation,the contralateral leg showed significantly smaller knee flexion angles at initial contact and increased peak vertical ground reaction forces and peak knee extension moments compared to legs in the no-perturbation ***:Mid-flight external trunk pushing perturbation increased ACL loading variables for the leg contralateral to the *** uppertrunk perturbation resulted in greater changes in ACL loading variables compared to the lower-trunk perturbation,likely due to trunk and ipsilateral leg rotation and more laterally located center of mass relative to the contralateral *** findings may help us understand the mechanisms of indirect-contact ACL injuries and develop jump-landing training strategies under mid-flight trunk perturbation to better prevent ACL injury.

Removal of ions from produced water using Powder River Basin coal

In addition to being used as an energy source,coal also has significant potential for other,more sustainable uses including water *** this study,we present a simple approach to treat water that was produced during oil production and contained a total dissolved solids(TDS)content of over 150 g/L using Powder River Basin(PRB)*** coal used as packing material in a flow-through column effectively removed 60%–80%of the cations and anions ***,71%–92%of the total organic carbon in the produced water was removed as was all of the total suspended *** removal mechanisms of both cations and anions were *** were removed by ion exchange with protons from oxygen-containing functional groups such as carboxylic and phenolic hydroxyl ***,mainly Cl−1,appeared to be removed through either the formation of resonance structures as a result of delocalization of electrons within coal molecules or through ion–π*** propose that coal is a“pseudo-amphoteric”exchange material that can remove cations and anions simultaneously by exchanging ions with both ionized and non-ionized acids that are ubiquitous in coal structure or resonance effect.

Estimating traffic volume on wyoming low volume roads using linear and logistic regression methods

Traffic volume is an important parameter in most transportation planning applications. Low volume roads make up about 69% of road miles in the United States. Estimating traffic on the low volume roads is a cost-effective alternative to taking traffic counts. This is because traditional traffic counts are expensive and impractical for low priority roads. The purpose of this paper is to present the development of two alternative means of cost- effectively estimating traffic volumes for low volume roads in wyoming and to make recommendations for their implementation. The study methodology involves reviewing existing studies, identifying data sources, and carrying out the model development. The utility of the models developed were then verified by comparing actual traffic volumes to those predicted by the model. The study resulted in two regression models that are inexpensive and easy to implement. The first regression model was a linear regression model that utilized pavement type, access to highways, predominant land use types, and population to estimate traffic volume. In verifying the model, an R^2 value of 0.64 and a root mean square error of 73.4% were obtained. The second model was a logistic regression model that identified the level of traffic on roads using five thresholds or levels. The logistic regression model was verified by estimating traffic volume thresholds and determining the percentage of roads that were accurately classified as belonging to the given thresholds. For the five thresholds, the percentage of roads classified correctly ranged from 79% to 88%. In conclusion, the verification of the models indicated both model types to be useful for accurate and cost-effective estimation of traffic volumes for low volume wyoming roads. The models developed were recommended for use in traffic volume estimations for low volume roads in pavement management and environmental impact assessment studies.

Modeling severities of motorcycle crashes using random parameters

One of the critical areas of road safety is motorcycle safety. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injuries than occupants of other motor vehicles when involved in *** have studied the relationships between motorcycle crash severity and crash contributing factors. They are crash characteristics, roadway geometric design features,traffic characteristics, socio-demographics and environmental conditions. However, few researchers considered unobserved heterogeneity effects when modeling motorcycle crash injury severities, let alone interaction effects. In this research, motorcycle crashes in wyoming that occurred from 2008 to 2017 were analyzed. Specifically, the injury severities of single motorcycle crashes and multiple vehicle crashes involving motorcycles were modeled. The response was whether the motorcycle crash incurred an incapacitating injury or fatality or not. The binary logistic regression and mixed binary logistic regression modeling structures were implemented. The mixed models revealed effects that otherwise would have been undisclosed in the binary logistic regression models’ results. According to the results of single motorcycle crashes, the majority of motorcycle-animal crashes and of motorcycle-barrier crashes were likely to be severe relative to other single motorcycle crashes. It was also found that horizontal curves increased the risk of severe *** riders were found to be less at risk of being gravely injured in single motorcycle crashes than older riders as well. Furthermore, riding under the influence and high posted speed limits increased the odds of severe crashes regardless of whether the crashes were single motorcycle crashes or multiple vehicle crashes involving motorcycles. Additionally,the mixed models uncovered interaction effects and unobserved effects pertaining to speed limits.

STOCHASTIC ANALYSIS OF UNSATURATED FLOW WITH THE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION OF SOIL HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY

Stochastic approaches are useful to quantitatively describe transportbehavior over large temporal and spatial scales while accounting for the influence of small-scalevariabilities. Numerous solutions have been developed for unsatu-rated soil water flow based on thelognormal distribution of soil hydraulic conductivity. To our knowledge, no available stochasticsolutions for unsaturated flow have been derived on the basis of the normal distribution ofhydraulic conductivity. In this paper, stochastic solutions were developed for unsaturated flow byassuming the normal distribution of saturated hydraulic conductivity (K_s). Under the assumptionthat soil hydraulic properties are second-order stationary, analytical expressions for capillarytension head variance (σ_h^2 ) and effective hydraulic conductivity (K_ii~*) in stratified soilswere derived using the perturbation method. The dependence of σ_h^2 and K_ii~* on soil variabilityand mean flow variables (the mean capillary tension head and its temporal and spatial gradients) andmean flow conditions (wetting and drying) were systematically analyzed. The calculated variance ofcapillary tension head with the analytical solution derived in this paper was compared with fieldexperimental data. The good agreement indicates that the analytical solution is applicable toevaluate the variance of capillary tension head of field soils with moderate variability.

Paradoxical effects of ginkgolide B on cardiomyocyte contractile function in normal and high-glucose environments

Aim:Ginkgo biloba extract is a natural product used widely for cerebral andcardiovascular *** is mainly composed of terpene lactones (ginkgolide Aand B) and flavone glycosides (eg quercetin and kaempferol).To better under-stand the cardiac electromechanical action of Ginkgo biloba extract in normal anddiabetic states,this study was designed to examine the effect of ginkgolide B oncardiomyocyte contractile function under normal and high-glucose ***:Isolated adult rat ventricular myocytes were cultured for 6h in a serum-free medium containing either normal (NG;5.5mmol/L) or high (HG;25.5mmol/L)glucose with or without ginkgolide B (0.5-2.0μg/mL).Mechanical propertieswere evaluated using the IonOptix MyoCam *** properties ana-lyzed included peak shortening (PS),maximal velocity of shortening/relengthening(±dl/dt),time-to-PS (TPS) and time-to-90% relengthening (TR90).Levels of essen-tial Ca2+regulatory proteins sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA2a),phospholamban (PLB) and Na~+-Ca2+exchanger (NCX) were assessed by ***:Ginkgolide B nullified HG-induced prolongation in ***,ginkgolide B depressed PS,±dl/dt and shortened TPS in NG and *** B also prolonged TR90in NG *** blot analysis re-vealed that HG upregulated SERCA2a and downregulated PLB expression with-out affecting that of *** B disrupted the NG-HG response pattern inSERCA2a and NCX without affecting that of ***:Ginkgolide Baffects cardiomyocyte contractile function under NG or HG environments in aparadoxical manner,which may be attributed to uneven action on Ca2+regulatoryproteins under NG and HG conditions.

A fully coupled finite element framework for thermal fracturing simulation in subsurface cold CO2 injection
