Examination of inverse Hall-Petch relation in nanostructured aluminum alloys by ultra-severe plastic deformation

To have an insight into the occurrence of inverse Hall-Petch relationship in ultrafine-grained(UFG) aluminum alloys produced by severe plastic deformation(SPD),ultra-SPD(*** several ten thousand shear strains via high-pressure torsion,HPT) followed by aging is applied to an Al-La-Ce *** nanograin sizes of 40 and 80 nm are successfully achieved together with strain-induced Lomer-Cottrell dislocation lock formation and aging-induced semi-coherent Al_(11)(La,Ce)_3 *** of hardening mechanisms in this alloy compared to SPD-processed pure aluminum with micrometer grain sizes,SPD-processed Al-based alloys with submicrometer grain sizes and ultra-SPD-processed Al-Ca alloy with nanograin sizes reveals the presence of two breaks in the Hall-Petch ***,a positive upbreak appears when the grain sizes decrease from micrometer to submicrometer which is due to extra hardening by solute-dislocation ***,a negative down-break and softening occur by decreasing the grain sizes from submicrometer to nanometer which is caused by weakening the dislocation hardening mechanism with minor contribution of the inverse Hall-Petch *** analyses confirm that nanograin formation is not necessarily a solution for extra hardening of Al-based alloys and other accompanying strategies such as grain-boundary segregation and precipitation are required to overcome such a down-break and softening.

Machine learning hydrogen adsorption on nanoclusters through structural descriptors

Catalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction on nanoclusters depends on diverse adsorption site *** learning reduces the cost for modelling those sites with the aid of *** analysed the performance of state-of-the-art structural descriptors Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions,Many-Body Tensor Representation and Atom-Centered Symmetry Functions while predicting the hydrogen adsorption(free)energy on the surface of *** 2D-material molybdenum disulphide and the alloy copper–gold functioned as test *** energy scans of hydrogen on the cluster surfaces were conducted to compare the accuracy of the descriptors in kernel ridge *** having recourse to data sets of 91 molybdenum disulphide clusters and 24 copper–gold clusters,we found that the mean absolute error could be reduced by machine learning on different clusters simultaneously rather than *** adsorption energy was explained by the local descriptor Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions,combining it with the global descriptor Many-Body Tensor Representation did not improve the overall *** concluded that fitting of potential energy surfaces could be reduced significantly by merging data from different nanoclusters.

Dynamic properties of a flexible metal-organic framework exhibiting a unique"picture frame"-like crystal morphology

The precise control of the crystal morphology of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)enables optimization of its adsorptive properties,as well as enables better integration within functional ***,the influence of such modifications on the dynamic properties of flexible MOFs is poorly understood Here,we report the synthesis of a series of Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(bpy)(bdc^(2-)=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate;bpy=4,4,-bipyridine)crystals having an unusual picture frame-like morphology that results from a restriction in the quantity of bpy pillars added to the reaction mixture during the intercalation of the Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(MeOH)_(2)*** width of the frames is found to correlate with the quantity of bpy,and importantly,causes the dynamic properties of the resulting Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(bpy)material to vary between rigid,elastic,and shape memory *** all,the results demonstrate the potential for the properties of MOFs to be optimized via subtle manipulations in the crystal morphology rather than changes in the overall material composition.

Unsaturated polyester（UPR）/thermoplastic polyurethane（TPU）/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding of thermoplastic polyurethane and unsaturated polyester prepolymer,and then mixing with the hybrids of styrene monomers and organoclay at ambient *** crosslinking reaction eventually occurred through the unsaturated polyester prepolymer and styrene *** morphology of the composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy（SEM） and transmission electron microscopy（TEM）.The results show that the impact strength of UPR/TPU/organoclay nanocomposites increases obviously;the cure shrinkage decreases markedly,the glass transition temperature is enhanced and an elastic response to the deformation is prominent at the temperature above 10℃.

A member of the ALOG gene family has a novel role in regulating nodulation in Lotus japonicus

Legumes can control the number of symbiotic nodules that form on their roots, thus balancing nitrogen assimilation and energy consumption. Two major pathways participate in nodulation: the Nod factor(NF)signaling pathway which involves recognition of rhizobial bacteria by root cells and promotion of nodulation, and the autoregulation of nodulation(AON) pathway which involves long-distance negative feedback between roots and shoots. Although a handful of genes have a clear role in the maintenance of nodule number, additional unknown factors may also be involved in this process. Here, we identify a novel function for a Lotus japonicus ALOG(Arabidopsis LSH1 and Oryza G1) family member, LjALOG1,involved in positively regulating nodulation. LjALOG1 expression increased substantially after inoculation with rhizobia, with high levels of expression in whole nodule primordia and in the base of developing nodules. The ljalog1 mutants, which have an insertion of the LORE1 retroelement in LjALOG1, had significantly fewer nodules compared with wild type, along with increased expression of LjCLE-RS1(L. japonicus CLE Root Signal 1), which encodes a nodulation suppressor in the AON pathway. In summary,our findings identified a novel factor that participates in controlling nodulation, possibly by suppressing the AON pathway.

Corrosion Behavior of MgZnCa Bulk Amorphous Alloys Fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering

Centimeter-sized Mg65Zn30Ca5 bulk amorphous alloys were fabricated by the spark plasma sintering process from the amorphous powders with a size smaller than 5 la m prepared by ball-milling. The sintered Mg65Zn30Ca5 samples were in an amorphous state when the spark plasma sintering was performed at a temperature of 383 K under a pressure of 600 MPa. The data of polarization curves presented that the sintered Mg65Zn30Ca5 bulk amorphous alloys exhibited higher corrosion resistance than pure Mg and AZ31B alloy owing to high content of Zn and homogeneous structure. A calcium phosphate compound layer was formed on the sintered Mg65Zn30Ca5 bulk amorphous sample after immersion in Hanks＇ solution, which is effective in improving corrosion resistance and bioactivity. The sintered MgZnCa bulk amorphous alloys with large dimensions broaden the potential application of bulk amorphous alloys in the biomedical fields.

Anchoring Active Sites by Pt_(2)FeNi Alloy Nanoparticles on NiFe Layered Double Hydroxides for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Cylinder-shaped macrocycles composed ofπ-panels have attracted special attention as one of the best platforms for the development of organic molecule-based chi-roptical ***[n]arenes are a class of macrocycles with the advantage of easy preparation but have not been extensively investigated from the perspective of luminescent ***,common alkoxy pillar[n]arenes areﬂuorescent in non-haloalkane solvents,showing potential to be used for molecule-based chi-roptical *** this work,circularly polarized luminescence(CPL)spectra are reported for a pillar[5]arene with stable planar chirality using tetrahydrofu-ran(THF)and cyclohexane as solvents,which has been missing for many *** pillar[5]arene also forms co-aggregates with 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene and 1,4-bis[(pentaﬂuorophenyl)ethynyl]benzene in THF/H2O mixtures,owing to a hydrophobic *** co-aggregates with theﬂuorinatedπ-rod display a new low-energy absorption peak and broad emission band as well as intense circular dichroism and CPL *** information from the enantiopure pillar[5]arene core is efﬁciently transmitted to the co-aggregates with theπ-conjugated rod,lead-ing to the highest dissymmetry factor for CPL(2.9×10-2 at 472 nm)among pillar[n]arene-based CPL materials.

In this work,fabrication of free-standing nanomembranes of metal oxide(MO_(x))and polymers by simple spin-coating method is ***,double-layer nanomembranes containing MO_(x) and epoxy resin of polyethyleneimine and poly[(o-cresyl glycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde]were ***-standing nanomembranes were successfully prepared,but defects formed in the metal oxide nanolayer during sharp bending of the *** overcome fragility of MO_(x) nanolayer,poly(vinyl alcohol)nanolayers were introduced between MO_(x) nanolayers by layer-by-layer(LbL)assembly *** LbL nanomembrane was also free-standing and was highly flexible during macroscopic membrane *** after transfer of the LbL nanomembrane onto a porous support,it did not have apparent cracks,confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The LbL nanomembrane sustained low gas permeance,confirming the absence of significant defects,although it shows excellent *** believe that the presented LbL nanomembrane could be a platform useful for the design of molecular nanochannels,which is the next challenge for efficient gas separation.
