The opening and spreading of the Atlantic Ocean b.tw.en Africa and South America evolved during the Early Cretaceous and w.re preceded b. dramatic tholeiitic(mafic)magmatism and minor silicic and alkaline *** features are presently recognized from the equatorial regions of b.azil and Africa to the Falklands and South *** southeastern South America,continental flood b.salts and related plumb.ng systems constitute the ParanáMagmatic Province(PMP),w.ose African counterpart is the Etendeka Magmatic Province(EMP).In northeastern b.azil,dike sw.rms and sill complexes compose the Equatorial Atlantic Magmatic Province(EQUAMP).As a common feature,these provinces are chemically represented b. tw. prevalent magma types:(1)tholeiitic b.salts and b.saltic andesites w.th low.i(TiO_(2)w..%),also including transitional Ti tholeiites w.th TiO_(2)~2.7-1.7 w..%,and low.incompatib.e element *** type is predominantly found in the southern PMP and EMP,w.th minor occurrences in the EQUAMP.(2)Tholeiitic b.salts and b.saltic andesites w.th high Ti(TiO_(2)>~2 w..%)and incompatib.e element *** Ti tholeiites are relevant in the northern PMP and EMP,and dominant in *** rocks(SiO_(2)=57-65 w..%)interpreted as b.products of assimilation and/or fractional crystallization(AFC)processes from high Ti tholeiitic magmas,are scarce(b.t present)in all three *** accurate analysis of multivariab.e datab.ses collected from the literature for dikes and sills,including major and trace element and radiogenic isotope data,reveals close similarities in their geochemical *** a paleogeographic reconstruction of w.st Gondw.na,the intrusive remnants of the PMP,EMP and EQUAMP are spread over an area of nearly 10×10^(6)km^(2).forming perhaps the most extensive set of plumb.ng systems on Earth,w.th a relatively consistent chronology b.sed on a vast collection of K-Ar and^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar data availab.e in the *** w.rk provides the first c

俯冲带大断层的强度是地球动力学的一个重要问题.过去20年来,学界对这一问题的认识有了根本性的改变.本文将简单介绍近期这一研究的核心科学内容、主要方法和结果.宏观估计这种断层大尺度平均强度的有效方法只有两种:一是用弧前地壳应力观测约束横向挤压力从而推算大断层强度,二是用弧前地表热流观测约束断层摩擦生热量从而推算大断层强度.目前的研究结果表明:首先,这些断层极弱,其有效摩擦系数一般在0.03左右,有些可能略大于0.1,这一结果也解释了为什么俯冲带不是造山带.其次,发生特大地震的大断层是最弱的,充分表明大地震不需要高强度断层和高应力,而需要易于破裂传播扩展的地质条件.另外,大地震发生时断层的应力降与强度相比,既不是微乎其微,也远不到百分之百.导致大断层极弱的地质原因还尚不明确.一般认为需要相当高的孔隙液压,但是断层泥中的软弱含水矿物可能也起关键作用.

River b.nkline migration is a frequent phenomenon in the river of the floodplain ***,channel dynamics-related changes in land use and land cover(LULC)are b.coming a risk to the life and property of people living in the vicinity of rivers.A comprehensive evaluation of the causes and consequences of such changes is essential for b.tter policy and decision-making for disaster risk reduction and *** present study assesses the changes in the b.ahmaputra River planform using the GIS-b.sed Digital Shoreline Analysis System(DSAS)and relates it w.th the changing LULC of the floodplain evaluated using the CA-Markov *** this study,the future channel of the b.ahmaputra River and its flood plain’s future LULC w.re forecasted to pinpoint the erosion-vulnerab.e ***-eight years(1973–2021)of remotely sensed data w.re applied to estimate the rate of b.nkline *** w.s ob.erved that the river’s erosion-accretion rate w.s higher in early times than in more recent *** left and right b.nks’average shifting rates b.tw.en 1973 and 1988 w.re -55.44 m/y and -56.79 m/y,respectively,w.ile they w.re-17.25 m/y and -48.49 m/y from 2011 to *** left b.nk of the river b.ahmaputra had more erosion than the right,w.ich indicates that the river is shifting in the leftw.rd direction(Southw.rd).In this river course,zone A(Low.r course)and zone b.Middle course)w.re more adversely affected than zone C(Upper course).According to the predicted result,the left b.nk is more susceptib.e to b.nk erosion than the right b.nk(w.ere the average rate of erosion and deposition w.s -72.23 m/y and 79.50 m/y,respectively).The left b.nk’s average rate of erosion w.s -111.22 m/*** research assesses the LULC study in conjunction w.th river channel dynamics in vulnerab.e areas w.ere nearb. infrastructure and settlements w.re at risk due to channel *** degree of accu-racy w.s verified using the actual b.nkline and predicted b.nkline,as w.ll as the actual LULC map

On predicting mantle mushroom plumes

This study investigates the mechanism of formation of convection plumes of mushroom shape in sub.solidus mantle and their prediction. The seismic-tomographic images of columnar structures of several hundreds kilometers in diameter have b.en reported b. several researchers, w.ile the much cherished mushroom-shaped plume heads could only b. found in computational geodynamics （CGD） models and simple small-scale lab.ratory analogue simulations. Our theory of transient instab.lity show. that the formation of convection plumes is preceded b. the onset of convection caused b. unsteady-state heat conduction at the b.undaries, from w.ich filamentous plumes first appear. The plumes generated at the Core Mantle b.undary （CMb. and lithosphere rising and falling through the mantle have b.en pre- dicted simply w.th our theory for various heat fluxes and viscosities, w.ich still remain uncertain amongst geoscientists. The sizes of mushroom plumes in the sub.solidus mantle caused b. heat fluxes of 20 and 120 mw.m2 at the CMb.are found to b. 1842 km and 1173 km w.th critical times over 825 Myr and 334 Myr respectively. They are comparab.e to some large continental flood b.salt provinces, and they numb.r b.tw.en 17 and 41. The thickness of the thermal b.undary layers at the CMb.from w.ich convection plumes evolved are found to b. 652 km and 415 km for 20 and 120 mw.m^2 respectively. Top cooling may produce plunging plumes of diameter of 585 km and at least 195 Myr old. The numb.r of cold plumes is estimated to b. 569, w.ich has not b.en ob.erved b. seismic tomograpb.

Detrital zircon geochronology of the Lutzow.Holm Complex,East Antarctica:Implications for Antarctica-Sri Lanka correlation

The Lützow.Holm Complex(LHC) of East Antarctica has b.en regarded as a collage of Neoarchean(ca.2.5 Ga), Paleoproterozoic(ca. 1.8 Ga), and Neoproterozoic(ca. 1.0 Ga) magmatic arcs w.ich w.re amalgamated through the latest Neoproterozoic collisional events during the assemb.y of Gondw.na supercontinent. Here, w. report new.geochronological data on detrital zircons in metasediments associated w.th the magmatic rocks from the LHC, and compare the age spectra w.th those in the adjacent terranes for evaluating the tectonic correlation of East Antarctica and Sri Lanka. Cores of detrital zircon grains w.th high Th/U ratio in eight metasediment samples can b. sub.ivided into tw. dominant groups:(1) late Meso-to Neoproterozoic(1.1-0.63 Ga) zircons from the northeastern part of the LHC in Prince Olav Coast and northern Soya Coast areas, and(2) dominantly Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic(2.8-2.4 Ga) zircons from the southw.stern part of the LHC in southern Lutzow.Holm b.y area. The ca.1.0 Ga and ca. 2.5 Ga magmatic suites in the LHC could b. proximal provenances of the detrital zircons in the northeastern and southw.stern LHC, respectively. Sub.rdinate middle to late Mesoproterozoic(1.3-1.2 Ga) detrital zircons ob.ained from Akarui Point and Langhovde could have b.en derived from adjacent Gondw.na fragments(e.g., Rayner Complex, Eastern Ghats b.lt). Meso-to Neoproterozoic domains such as Vijayan and w.nni Complexes of Sri Lanka, the southern Madurai b.ock of southern India, and the central-w.stern Madagascar could b. alternative distal sources of the late Meso-to Neoproterozoic zircons. Paleo-to Mesoarchean domains in India, Africa, and Antarctica might also b. distal sources for the minor ~2.8 Ga detrital zircons from Skallevikshalsen. The devastating effect of soil erosion is one of the major sources of land degradation that affects human lives in many w.ys w.ich occur mainly due to deforestation, poor agricultural practices, overgrazing,w.ldfire and urb.nization. Soil erosion often leads to soil truncation, loss of fertility, slope instab.lity, *** causes irreversib.e effects on the poorly renew.b.e soil resource. In view.of this, a study w.s conducted in Kelantan River b.sin to predict soil loss as influenced b. long-term land use/land-cover(LULC) changes in the area. The study w.s conducted w.th the aim of predicting and assessing soil erosion as it is influenced b. long-term LULC changes. The 13,100 km^2 w.tershed w.s delineated into four sub.catchments Galas, Pergau, Leb.r and Nenggiri for precise result estimation and ease of execution. GIS-b.sed Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE) model w.s used to predict soil loss in this study. The model inputs used for the temporal and spatial calculation of soil erosion include rainfall erosivity factor,topographic factor, land cover and management factor as w.ll as erodib.lity factor. The results show.d that 67.54% of soil loss is located under low.erosion potential(reversib.e soil loss) or 0-1 t ha^(-1) yr^(-1) soil loss in Galas, 59.17% in Pergau, 53.32% in Leb.r and 56.76% in Nenggiri all under the 2013 LULC *** from the correlation of soil erosion rates w.th LULC changes indicated that cleared land in all the four catchments and under all LULC conditions(1984-2013) appears to b. the dominant w.th the highest erosion losses. Similarly, grassland and forest w.re also ob.erved to regulate erosion rates in the area. This is b.cause the vegetation cover provided b. these LULC types protects the soil from direct impact of rain drops w.ich invariab.y reduce soil loss to the b.rest minimum. Meso-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Talas-Fergana region of the Kyrgyz Tien Shan revealed b. low.temperature b.sement and detrital thermochronology

This study provides new.low.temperature thermochronometric data, mainly apatite fission track data on the b.sement rocks in and adjacent to the Talas-Fergana Fault, in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan in the first *** the second place, w. also present new.detrital apatite fission track data on the Meso-Cenozoic sediments from fault related b.sins and surrounding intramontane b.sins. Our results confirm multistaged Meso-Cenozoic tectonic activity, possib.y induced b. the accretion of the so-called Cimmerian b.ocks to the Eurasian margin. New.evidence for this multi-staged thermo-tectonic activity is found in the data of b.th b.sement and Meso-Cenozoic sediment samples in or close to the Talas-Fergana ***(U-Th)/He and apatite fission track data constrain rapid Late TriassiceE arly Jurassic and Late JurassiceE arly Cretaceous b.sement cooling in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan around 200 Ma and 130 -100 Ma respectively. Detrital apatite fission track results indicate a different b.rial history on b.th sides of the Talas-Fergana Fault. The apatite fission track system of the Jurassic sediments in the Middle Tien Shan unit east of the Talas-Fergana Fault is not reset, w.ile the Jurassic sediments in the Fergana b.sin and Yarkand-Fergana b.sin, w.st of the fault zone, are partially and in some cases even totally reset. The totally reset samples exhib.t Oligocene and Miocene ages and evidence the Cenozoic reactivation of the w.stern Kyrgyz Tien Shan as a consequence of the India-Eurasia convergence.

Using a geographic information system (GIS), the relations b.tw.en a georeferenced data set of Culex pipiens s.l. collected in Portugal mainland during seven years (2006-2012) and meteorological and physiographic parameters are evaluated. This w.rk is one of the results of a long-term surveillance program of pernicious insects that act as vectors of various diseases;its focus is on the possib.lity of prevention that can b. achieved w.th ab.ndance data. The focus on Culex pipiens is justified b. its ab.ndance and its competence as a vector for numerous health issues. The cumulative distrib.tion of monthly captures b. each meteorological parameter allow. to compute thresholds corresponding to mosquito massive presence related to 90% of the captures. Using the w.ather parameters measured in the netw.rk of w.ather stations across the country, a monthly average of each parameter of interest (temperature, humidity, etc.) is computed and an interpolation of the results is made to produce raster maps corresponding to each month. The previously ob.ained thresholds are applied to each map, producing spatial masks w.th the relevant zones for each parameter. The intersection of the various masks for each month show. the most densely populated area of Culex, and the ensemb.e allow. us to ob.erve the evolution of mosquito presence through the critical season, w.ich is from May to Octob.r at these latitudes. In parallel, mosquito ab.ndance data are related to physiographic parameters. The relative distrib.tion of female mosquitoes across land cover types in each month allow. identifying w.ich classes and seasons are most relevant. Orthometric altitude related to the presence of 90% of the catches show. the limits reached b. mosquitoes in each month.
