The Ordovician rocks on the Qinghai-Tib.tan Plateau represent the oldest non-metamorphic strata,and are critical to understanding the history of regional geology and b.otic evolution of the entire *** of Floian,Darriw.lian,Sandb.an,Katian and Hirnantian are represented in the plateau w.th a hiatus of variab.e duration occurring underneath the b.sal Ordovician across the *** stratigraphical regions,including the Himalaya,Gangdise-Zayu,Qiangtang-Qamdo,Songpan-Garze,and Karakoram-Kunlun-Altun,are differentiated for the Ordovician strata,w.ich are correlated w.th their equivalents in the Sib.masu,Indochina,Qaidam-Qilian,Tarim-Tianshan,and the Yangtze(w.stern margin)stratigraphical *** the QinghaiTib.tan Plateau,graptolites,conodonts,and cephalopods are the most common and useful fossils for the Ordovician *** Ordovician b.otas of the Qinghai-Tib.tan Plateau b.ar some distinguishab.e palaeob.ogeographical signatures,among w.ich the cephalopods are characterized b. the flourishing actinocerids of North China affinity in the Early-Middle Ordovician,and b. the thriving lituitids and orthocerids of South China affinity in the Middle-Late *** occurrences and their palaeob.ogeographical evolution provide critical evidence b.aring on the reconstruction of the geological history of the Qinghai-Tib.tan Plateau and surrounding terranes in northeastern *** stratigraphical successions of the Camb.ian-Ordovician transition in the Himalaya and Lhasa and nearb. Sib.masu terranes w.re significantly affected b. the Kurgiakh Orogeny,w.ich resulted in the extensive unconformity b.tw.en the Ordovician and the underlying rocks in most areas of the Qinghai-Tib.tan *** southern Xizang,a w.rm-w.ter b.ota of Middle Ordovician age w.s recovered from oolitic limestones,suggesting a likely palaeogeographical location in low.latitudes near the *** the Himalaya and Sib.masu regions,the Upper Ordovician w.s typified b. t

Conodont diversification during the Ordovician:A perspective from North China and Tarim(Northw.stern China)

Review.of the literature on Ordovician conodont diversification in palaeoplates of North and w.stern China reveals that four diversity peaks are present in North China,occurring in the middle Tremadocian,early Floian,late Floian,and late Darriw.lian,w.th three of these peaks(excepting that in the late Floian)also b.ing recorded in *** diversification intervals are present in North China,during the Tremadocian,late Floian,early and middle Darriw.lian;comparab.e intervals are ob.erved in the early and late Tremadocian,early Floian,and the Middle Ordovician in *** main conodont diversification episode in b.th palaeoplates took place in the Darriw.lian,at the time of the Great Ordovician b.odiversification Event.A comparison of conodont diversity patterns in different palaeoplates(North China,Tarim,and South China)demonstrates that conodont radiation events mainly occurred w.thin the Tremadocian,Floian,and *** diversifications in these paleoplates also display some *** contrasting w.th Tarim and South China,North China w.tnessed a rapid conodont diversification during late Floian *** diversity in North China and Tarim increased continually and reached a peak in the late Darriw.lian,concurrent w.th a prominent decreasing trend in South *** of conodont diversification in these three palaeoplates may b. related to their palaeogeography and tectonic *** conodont diversifications in North China and Tarim are analysed on the b.ckground of palaeoenvironments,the main episodes are seen to b. partly coincident w.th second order sea-level changes,particularly in North *** general,conodont radiation correlates w.th large scale transgressions.

Middle Ordovician Conodont b.ostratigraphy of Australasia

Seven conodont b.ozones are recognized in the carb.nate-dominated shelf-marine Middle Ordovician developed in the intracratonic sedimentary b.sins(Canning,Amadeus and Georgina)of central and north-w.stern Australia,in the Lachlan and New.England orogens of New.South w.les,and in the Takaka Terrane of New.Zealand.A separate scheme identifying seven conodont b.ozones spanning the Middle Ordovician has also b.en developed for siliciclastic sequences deposited in slopeb.sinal environments in the Lachlan Orogen in New.South w.les and *** b.ozonal classification consisting of tw. parallel b.ostratigraphic schemes for the shelf-marine and deep-marine successions respectively has significantly increased precision in regional and glob.l b.ostratigraphic correlation and laid a solid foundation for the Middle Ordovician chronostratigraphy of Australia and New.*** of short-ranging pandemic species as the eponymous species of the b.ozones also supports direct correlation w.th the classical conodont successions estab.ished in b.ltoscandia and the North American Midcontinent,and w.th those of the major Chinese terranes(South and North China and Tarim).The Lachlan Orogen appears to b. glob.lly unique in enab.ing correlation of contemporaneous conodont faunas over a considerab.e spectrum of w.ter depths and b.ofacies ranging from carb.nate shelves,slopes to deep-w.ter b.sins.

Ordovician conodonts representing 28 genera and 28 named and three unnamed species w.re identified from 740 chert and siliceous siltstone spot samples(>3000 thin sections)from deep-w.ter turb.ditic sequences of the Lachlan Orogen in central and southern New.South w.les,*** on these faunas,a new.conodont b.ozonal scheme has b.en estab.ished to divide the Ordovician turb.ditic successions of the Lachlan Orogen into 12 superb.ozones and *** are(in ascending order)the Paracordylodus gracilis Superb.ozone(including the Prioniodus oepiki b.ozone),Periodon flab.llum Superb.ozone(including the Oepikodus evae b.ozone in the low.r part),Periodon hankensis b.ozone,Periodon aculeatus Superb.ozone(including the Histiodella lab.osa,Histiodella holodentata,Histiodella kristinae,Pygodus serra and Pygodus anserinus b.ozones)and the Periodon grandis *** Pygodus anserinus b.ozone is divided further into the low.r and upper *** new.conodont b.ozonation scheme spanning the upper Tremadocian to middle Katian interval permits precise age-dating and correlation of deep-w.ter siliciclastic rocks that characterize the Ordovician Deep-Sea Realm regionally and internationally.

Camb.ian Stem-group Cnidarians w.th a New.Species from the Camb.ian Series 3 of the Taeb.eksan b.sin, Korea

Five species, Lipopora lissa Jell and Jell, 1976, Lipopora daseia Jell and Jell, 1976, Tretocylichne perplexa Engeib.etsen, 1993 from Australia, Camb.octoconus orientalis Park, w.o, Lee, Lee, Lee, Han and Chough, 2011 from China, and Camb.octoconus kyrgyzstanicus Peel, 2014 from Kyrgyzstan, b.longing to the Camb.ian stem-group cnidarians have b.en documented in the fossil record. Camb.octoconus coreaensis sp. nov., interpreted here as a stem-group cnidarian, from the Seokgaejae section in the Daegi Formation, Taeb.ek Group （Camb.ian Series 3）, Taeb.eksan b.sin, central-eastern Korean Peninsula, has a slender cup-shaped skeleton. A cladistic analysis produced 21 most parsimonious trees, w.ich invariab.y placed the six stem-group cnidarians b.low.the crow.-group, b.t their relationships w.thin the stem-group are unresolved. Nine out of the 21 trees suggest a monophyletic relationship for the Camb.ian stem-group cnidarians, w.ereas in six other trees a monophyly of Camb.octoconus and Tretocylichne appeared as the sister-group to the crow.-group cnidarians w.th Lipopora at the most b.sal b.anch. This result may reflect the fact that crow.-group cnidarians evolved in the Precamb.ian, and suggests that the diversity of stem-group cnidarians w.s a result of an independent radiation in the Camb.ian.

In this chapter, starting w.th a b.ief review.of the research history and current status in the studies of the Ordovician chronostratigraphy in China, the sub.ivision of the Ordovician System, definition and recognition of its series and stage b.undaries, and possib.e stratigraphic gaps are discussed in details in order to estab.ish a multidisciplinary stratigraphic correlation through an integrated approach including lithostratigraphy, b.ostratigraphy, radiometric dating, chemostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. b.ing internationally accepted, the Ordovician System is now.sub.ivided into three series and seven stages, in ascending order, Low.r(Tremadocian, Floian), Middle(Dapingian, Darriw.lian) and Upper series(Sandb.an, Katian,Hirnantian). Three of the seven "Golden Spikes" defining the b.ses of the Ordovician stages, w.ich w.re estab.ished in 1997–2007, are located in China. As a regionally applied chronostratigraphy, the Ordovician System w.s sub.ivided in China into Low.r(Xinchangian, Yiyangian), Middle(Dapingian, Darriw.lian) and Upper series(Neichiashanian, Chientangkiangian,Hirnantian). This scheme agrees largely w.th the standard international classification, w.ich can actually b. directly applied to China, except for some special circumstances w.ere the Neichiashanian and Chientangkiangian stages of the Upper Ordovician are used. b.sed on the new.studies in recent years and distinctions and differences recognized in the development of the Ordovician System in the constituent terranes of China, a new.framew.rk for correlation among the major Chinese palaeoplates or terranes, e.g. South China, North China(including Tarim and Qaidam) and Xizang(Tib.t)-w.stern Yunnan, has b.en estab.ished. How.ver, it has b.en recognized herein that uncertainties still remain on defining the b.se of the Tremadocian,Dapingian and Katian, and on the correlation b.tw.en different mega-facies. The Ailao Shan-Red River fault zone is the b.undary b.tw.en the Yangtze b.ock to the northeast and the Indochina b.ock to the *** is an important tectonic zone due to its role in the southeastw.rd extrusion of the Indochina b.ock during and sub.equent to the Indian-Eurasian *** Shan(DCS) high-grade metamorphic complex,located at the northw.st extension along the Ailao Shan-Red River(ASRR) shear zone,is a representative metamorphic complex of the ASRR tectonic *** and microstructural analysis of sheared rocks in the high-grade metamorphic rocks reveals that they are coherent w.th solid-state high-temperature ductile deformation,w.ich is attrib.ted to left-lateral shearing along the ASRR shear *** LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb.geochronological and microstructural studies of the post-kinematic granitic plutons provide a straightforw.rd time constraint on the termination ductile left-lateral shearing and exhumation of the metamorphic massif in the ASRR shear *** is suggested that the left-lateral shearing along the ASRR shear zone ended at ca.21 Ma at relative low.r-temperature or decreasing temperature *** or after the emplacement of the young dikes at ca.21 Ma,rapid b.ittle deformation event occurred,w.ich makes the DCS massif start fast uplift/exhumation and cooling to a shallow.crustal level.

b.ttom Simulating Reflector and Gas Seepage in Okinaw. Trough:Evidence of Gas Hydrate in an Active b.ck-Arc b.sin

To look for gas hydrate, 22 multi-channel and 3 single-channel seismic lines on the East China Sea （ECS） shelf slope and at the b.ttom of the Okinaw. Trough w.re examined. It w.s found that there w.s indeed b.ttom simulating reflector （b.R） occurrence, b.t it is very rare. b.sides several b.Rs, a gas seepage w.s also found. As show. b. the data, b.th the b.R and gas seepage are all related w.th local geological structures, such as mud diapir, anticline, and fault-controlled grab.n-like structure. How.ver, similar structural ＂anomalies＂ are quite common in the tectonically very active Okinaw. Trough region, b.t very few.of them have developed b.R or gas seepage. The article points out that the main reason is prob.b.y the low.concentration of organic carb.n of the sediment in this area. It w.s speculated that the rare occurrence of gas hydrates in this region is governed b. structure-controlled fluid flow. Numerous faults and fractures form a netw.rk of high-permeab.lity channels in the sediment and highly fractured igneous b.sement to allow.fluid circulation and ventilation. Fluid flow.in this tectonic environment is driven primarily b. thermal b.oyancy and takes place on a w.de range of spatial scales. The fluid flow.may play tw. roles to facilitate hydrate formation： to help gather enough methane into a small area and to modulate the thermal regime.
