Social networks of reintroduced Przewalski's horses in the Great Gobi b Strictly Protected Area (Mongolia)

Analyzing social networks is a powerful tool for understanding the ecology of social species.While most studies focus on the role of each group member,few compare groups with different characteristics.The current population of Przewalski's horses Equus ferus przewalskii at the Great Gobi b Strictly Protected Area(Mongolia)includes groups of wild-born and captive-bred individuals with different experiences with the area(acclimatizing,long-term reintroduced,and wild-born),therefore serving as an ideal natural behavioral lab.We filmed 11 groups for 141.5 hours in summer 2018(July),late spring 2019(May,June),and autumn 2019(September,October).Affiliative and agonistic interactions were recorded,and social networks were created.We tested the influence of origin,experience,season,sex,age,relative time belonging to the group,relat-edness,and dominance rank on different network indices at the individual and group levels.We found that groups with greater experience in the area are generally better connected than members of the newly formed groups.However,these strong networks were created by wild-born individuals with very low interaction rates.On the contrary,inexperienced groups composed of captive-bred individuals displayed many inter actions but created weak social networks.The results show a trend of behavioral transition from acclimatizing through long-term reintroduced to wild-born groups,supporting that the newly formed groups of released Przewalski's horses need time to display the typical social behavior patterns of wild-born individuals.Long-term monitoring of released Przewalski's horses is recommended to promote the success of this reintroduction program.

biomass and plastics are two of the most common municipal solid wastes globally that have continuously placed a burden on the environment.It is therefore important that they are properly recycled.Thermochemical coconversion offers a valuable opportunity to recycle biomass and plastics simultaneously into biochar,which reduces the time and cost of recycling them individually while producing a material with a wide range of applications.This study is a review of published literature that discusses the thermochemical co-processing of biomass and plastic wastes into biochar.It was observed that co-pyrolysis and co-hydrothermal carbonization are the most commonly utilized technologies for this process.The characteristics of different biomass and plastics that have been thermochemically converted into biochar were compared.The properties of the resulting biochar are affected by the feedstock composition,pre-treatment and blending ratio,the reactor’s configuration,reaction temperature,and the presence of a catalyst.Most studies found that treating the feedstocks separately resulted in a lower yield of biochar than processing them together.The biochar created by this procedure has been used as a soil additive and as an adsorbent for water treatment.Future perspectives and suggestions,such as the necessity for some technical advancement,biochar’s economic benefits,improved government participation,and raised social awareness,were also made.These factors have the potential to propel this field of study to great horizons.

Non-cirrhotic non-malignant portal vein thrombosis(NCPVT)is an uncommon condition characterised by thrombosis of the portal vein,with or without extension into other mesenteric veins,in the absence of cirrhosis or intra-abdominal malignancy.Complications can include intestinal infarction,variceal bleeding and portal biliopathy.In this article,we address current concepts in the management of NCPVT including identification of risk factors,classification and treatment,and review the latest evidence on medical and interventional management options.

Development of NK cell-based cancer immunotherapies through receptor engineering

Natural killer(NK)cell-based immunotherapies are attracting increasing interest in the field of cancer treatment.Early clinical trials have shown promising outcomes,alongside satisfactory product efficacy and safety.Recent developments have greatly increased the therapeutic potential of NK cells by endowing them with enhanced recognition and cytotoxic capacities.This review focuses on surface receptor engineering in NK cell therapy and discusses its impact,challenges,and future directions.Most approaches are based on engineering with chimeric antigen receptors to allow NK cells to target specific tumor antigens independent of human leukocyte antigen restriction.This approach has increased the precision and potency of NK-mediated recognition and elimination of cancer cells.In addition,engineering NK cells with T-cell receptors also mediates the recognition of intracellular epitopes,which broadens the range of target peptides.Indirect tumor peptide recognition by NK cells has also been improved by optimizing immunoglobulin constant fragment receptor expression and signaling.Indeed,engineered NK cells have an improved ability to recognize and destroy target cells coated with specific antibodies,thereby increasing their antibodydependent cellular cytotoxicity.The ability of NK cell receptor engineering to promote the expansion,persistence,and infiltration of transferred cells in the tumor microenvironment has also been explored.Receptor-based strategies for sustained NK cell functionality within the tumor environment have also been discussed,and these strategies providing perspectives to counteract tumor-induced immunosuppression.Overall,receptor engineering has led to significant advances in NK cell-based cancer immunotherapies.As technical challenges are addressed,these innovative treatments will likely reshape cancer immunotherapy.

Surface Modification Aspects for Improving biomedical Properties in Implants:A Review

The primary focus during surgery is to ensure successful implantation by achieving long-term and stable fixation of implants.Orthopaedic surgery is now more focused on the development of novel biomaterials intended to improve implant performance.To obtain a better understanding of metal implants,this article investigated the causes of material failures in certain cases and analysed a few case studies.The interaction between the implant and bone tissue was a crucial aspect of successful implantation,and this study explored the factors influencing this interaction as well as ways to improve it.Several modern approaches used for modifying implant surfaces were systematically illustrated and briefly analysed.Thermal spray coatings were often favoured because of their wide range of coating materials,but other substantial surface modifications(such as friction stir processing and laser surface texturing)were also used for a selection of applications.Notably,implant surfaces with desirable features,such as biocompatibility,antibacterial properties,corrosion resistance,and wear resistance,were essential for optimising implant functionality.This systematic review's main aim is to provide exhaustive reference information and a broad overview to advance the production and design of orthopaedic implants.

Navigating reflux disease after achalasia treatments:balancing risks and benefits

The peroral endoscopic myotomy(POEM)procedure has revolutionized the management of achalasia in many centres around the world as it offers patients a minimally invasive endoscopic solution to their dysphagia caused by achalasia.Alongside its success in alleviating dysphagia,concerns regarding postoperative gastroesophageal reflux disease have emerged as a pertinent issue which are not fully resolved.In this study,Nabi et al have comprehensively reviewed the topic of the prediction,prevention and management of gastroesophageal reflux after POEM.POEM is a purely endoscopic procedure which is usually performed without any anti-reflux procedure.Certain patients may be better served by a laparoscopic Heller’s myotomy and fundoplication and it is important that gastroenterologists and surgeons provide comprehensive risks and benefits of each achalasia treatment option so that patients can decide what treatment is best for them.This article by Nabi et al provides a comprehensive review of the current status of this issue to allow these discussions to occur.

Orientation bias of Self-Assembled Alkanes and Their Derivatives Under Dynamic Lateral Nanoconfinement Conditions

Self-assembled molecular networks(SAMNs)formed on crystalline solid substrates result from the spontaneous arrangement of individual molecules into structured patterns.The interaction between molecules and the substrate leads to a nonrandom orientation of SAMNs with respect to the substrate’s lattice.In the case of graphite,the sixfold rotational symmetry of the substrate results in an equivalent rotational degeneracy in the orientation of SAMNs.In this study,we explored how nanoconfinement,that is,the restriction of SAMN formation to nanometersized areas,known as nanocorrals,could impact and potentially alleviate the orientational degeneracy of SAMNs,with emphasis on the influence of molecule symmetry,size,and intermolecular interactions.To this end,we investigated the orientation distribution of n-alkanes and functionalized alkanes within nanocorrals,which were fabricated using scanning tunneling microscopy lithography(nanoshaving).We observed lifting of orientational degeneracy for long alkanes,contrary to shorter alkanes,which did not exhibit this orientation preference.Notably,functionalized alkanes with hydrogen bonding groups demonstrated preferential alignment regardless of length,highlighting the significance of stabilizing intermolecular interactions in the alignment process.This study discussed the underlying principles of the molecular packing process and shed light on the complexity of molecular self-assembly in nanoconfined spaces.

Protected simultaneous quantum remote state preparation scheme by weak and reversal measurements in noisy environments

We discuss a quantum remote state preparation protocol by which two parties, Alice and Candy, prepare a single-qubit and a two-qubit state, respectively, at the site of the receiver bob. The single-qubit state is known to Alice while the two-qubit state which is a non-maximally entangled bell state is known to Candy. The three parties are connected through a single entangled state which acts as a quantum channel. We first describe the protocol in the ideal case when the entangled channel under use is in a pure state. After that, we consider the effect of amplitude damping(AD) noise on the quantum channel and describe the protocol executed through the noisy channel. The decrement of the fidelity is shown to occur with the increment in the noise parameter. This is shown by numerical computation in specific examples of the states to be created. Finally, we show that it is possible to maintain the label of fidelity to some extent and hence to decrease the effect of noise by the application of weak and reversal measurements. We also present a scheme for the generation of the five-qubit entangled resource which we require as a quantum channel. The generation scheme is run on the IbMQ platform.

The use of three-dimensional self-assembled metallacages(MCgs)as multimodal drug platforms holds great promise.However,the synthesis of MCgs with increased complexity and functionality is a great challenge since understanding of the interaction of MCgs with biological targets is still limited.In this context,this work reports on the integration of a gold(III)porphyrin scaffold into a prismatic MCg structure and explores its application for multimodal therapy of cancer in vitro,namely enabling both photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy.Combining experimental approaches with a state-of-the-art metadynamics theoretical study,we discovered that the gold cage shows unprecedented host-guest interaction-driven selective stabilization of guanine-quadruplex(G4)structures-validated anticancer drug targets-disclosing a new mechanism to pursue in the design of supramolecular drugs.

Thermodynamic properties and phase diagram of quark matter within non-extensive Polyakov chiral SU(3)quark mean field model

In the present study,we applied Tsallis non-extensive statistics to investigate the thermodynamic properties and phase diagram of quark matter in the Polyakov chiral SU(3)quark mean field model.Within this model,the properties of the quark matter were modified through the scalar fieldsσ,ζ,δ,χ,vector fieldsω,ρ,ϕ,and Polyakov fieldsΦandΦ¯at finite temperature and chemical potential.Non-extensive effects were introduced through a dimensionless parameter q,and the results were compared to those of the extensive case(q→1).In the non-extensive case,the exponential in the Fermi-Dirac(FD)function was modified to a q-exponential form.The influence of the q parameter on the thermodynamic properties,pressure,energy,and entropy density,as well as trace anomaly,was investigated.The speed of sound and specific heat with non-extensive effects were also studied.Furthermore,the effect of non-extensivity on the deconfinement phase transition as well as the chiral phase transition of u,d,and s quarks was explored.We found that the critical end point(CEP),which defines the point in the(T−μ)phase diagram where the order of the phase transition changes,shifts to a lower value of temperature,TCEP,and a higher value of chemical potential,μCEP,as the non-extensivity is increased,that is,q>1.
