Comparison of the impact of nesofilcon A hydrogel contact lens on the ocular surface and the comfort of presbyopic and non-presbyopic wearers

AIM: To assess and compare the impact of a daily disposable contact lens(CL) with high water content on the ocular surface and comfort of the presbyopic and nonpresbyopic population after one day of use. METHODS: Totally 20 presbyopes and 30 non-presbyopes non-contact wearers were fitted with nesofilcon A CLs. CL thickness was measured to assess material stability during daily wear, and ocular surface parameters were also assessed. Optical quality was analyzed for all cases. In addition, CL comfort was ***: No significant differences were found in CL thickness, tear film osmolarity, average tear break-up time, bulbar redness, central corneal thickness, corneal volume, root-mean-square of higher-order aberrations(RMS of HOAs) and vertical and horizontal coma, either as a function of the group or time of use. A significant decrease in tear meniscus height and first break-up of the tear film was found in the presbyopic group(P=0.038; P=0.007 respectively). A decrease in spherical aberration coefficient was found after CL insertion(P=0.031 monofocal CL; P=0.023 low addition multifocal CL; P=0.016 high addition multifocal CL). Multifocal CL were thicker than monofocal CL(P=0.045). Comparison between groups showed more discomfort in presbyopes than non-presbyopes(P=0.003).CONCLUSION: This study evidence that the behavior of the daily disposable CL with high water content seems to be stable during the day of use. Ocular parameters measured during wear show that CL behavior is the same for presbyopes and non-presbyopes, being more uncomfortable for presbyopes.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD)threatens the foundations of humanity and our *** is a neurological disorder primarily affecting the elderly through memory disorders,cognitive decline,and loss of *** dramatic consequences of this late-onset disease were illustrated sensitively in Michael Haneke’s masterpiece,*** and governments have invested colossal efforts to develop a treatment for this terrible *** and in the past decade the amyloid cascade has dominated the therapeutic research on AD,but the absence of benefit for patients treated with drugs that reduce brain amyloid deposit questions the role ofβ-amyloid as a causative agent(Herrup,2021).The recent approval of aducanumab by the United States Food and Drug Administration,a drug that targetsβ-amyloid,is at the center of a scandal among clinicians and researchers,as it does not provide therapeutic benefits to patients and is listed among the breakdowns of the year 2021 by Science magazine(Voosen et al.,2021).The lack of progress in curing AD and recent therapeutic failures calls for further exploratory research.

Variations of OCT measurements corrected for the magnification effect according to axial length and refractive error in children

Genes and genetics in eye diseases: a genomic medicine approach for investigating hereditary and inflammatory ocular disorders

Past 25 y have witnessed an exponential increase in knowledge and understanding of ocular diseases and their respective genetic underpinnings. As a result, scientists have mapped many genes and their variants that can influence vision and health of our eyes. Based on these findings, it is becoming clear that an early diagnosis employing genetic testing can help evaluate patients＇ conditions for instituting treatment plan（s） and follow-up care to avoid vision complications later. For example, knowing family history becomes crucial for inherited eye diseases as it can benefit members in family who may have similar eye diseases or predispositions. Therefore, gathering information from an elaborate examination along with complete assessment of past medical illness by ophthalmologists followed by consultation with geneticists can help create a roadmap for making diagnosis and treatment precise and beneficial. In this review, we present an update on ocular genomic medicine that we believe has tremendous potential towards unraveling genetic implications in ocular diseases and patients＇ susceptibilities. We also discuss translational aspects of genetic ophthalmology and genome engineering that may help advance molecular diagnostics and therapeutics.

Evaluation of visual stress symptoms in age-matched dyslexic, Meares-Irlen syndrome and normal adults

AIM： To examine the prevalence of dyslexia and Meares-Irlen syndrome（MIS） among female students and determine their level of visual stress in comparison with normal subjects.·METHODS： A random sample of 450 female medical students of King Saud University Riyadh（age range, 18-30y） responded to a wide range of questions designed to accomplish the aims of this study. The detailed questionnaire consisted of 54 questions with 12 questions enquiring on ocular history and demography of participants while 42 questions were on visual symptoms. Items were categorized into critical and non-critical questions（CQ and NCQ） and were rated on four point Likert scale. Based on the responses obtained, the subjects were grouped into normal（control）, dyslexic with or without MIS（Group 1） and subjects with MIS only（Group 2）. Responses were analysed as averages and mean scores were calculated and compared between groups using one way analysis of variance to evaluate total visual stress score（TVSS =NCQ ＋CQ）, critical and non-critical visual stress scores. The relationship between categorical variables such as age, handedness and condition were assessed with Chi-square test.·RESULTS： The completion rate was 97.6% and majority of the respondents（92%） were normal readers, 2%dyslexic and 6% had MIS. They were age-matched. More than half of the participants had visited an eye care practitioner in the last 2y. About 13% were recommendedeye exercises and one participant experienced pattern glare. Hand preference was not associated with any condition but Group 1 subjects（3/9, 33%） were significantly more likely to be diagnosed of lazy eye than Group 2（2/27, 7%） and control（27/414, 7%） subjects. The mean±SD of TVSS responses were 63±14 and it was 44±9for CQ and 19 ±5 for NCQ. Responses from all three variables were normally distributed but the CQ responses were on the average more positive（82%） in Group 2 and less positive（46%） in Group 1 than control. A framework for quantifying properties of 3-dimensional movement-based signals

Understanding how signal properties are optimized for the reliable transmission of information requires accurate de- scription of the signal in time and space. For movement-based signals where movement is restricted to a single plane, measure- ments from a single viewpoint can be used to consider a range of viewing positions based on simple geometric calculations. However, considerations of signal properties from a range of viewing positions for movements extending into three-dimensions （3D） are more problematic. We present here a new framework that overcomes this limitation, and enables us to quantify the extent to which movement-based signals are view-specific. To illustrate its application, a Jacky lizard tail flick signal was filmed with synchronized cameras and the position of the tail tip digitized for both recordings. Camera aligmnent enabled tl^e construction of a 3D display action pattern profile. We analyzed the profile directly and used it to create a detailed 3D animation. In the virtual environment, we were able to film the same signal from multiple viewing positions and using a computational motion analysis algorithm （gradient detector model） to measure local image velocity in order to predict view dependent differences in signal properties. This approach will enable consideration of a range of questions concerning movement-based signal design and evolu- tion that were previously out of reach [Current Zoology 56 （3）： 327-336, 2010].

Accommodation in human eye models:a comparison between the optical designs of Navarro,Arizona and Liou-Brennan

AIM： To simulate and compare accommodation in accommodative and non-accommodative human eye ***： Ray tracing and optical design program was used. Three eye models were designed and studied： the Navarro, the Arizona and the Liou-Brennan. In order to make the Navarro and Liou-Brennan models to accommodate, specific geometric parameters of the models were altered with values that were chosen from the literature. For the Arizona model, its’ mathematical functions for accommodation were used for the same accommodative demands. The simulation included four distances of accommodation for each model： at infinity, 3, 1 and 0.5 *** results were diffraction images of a “letter F” for graphical comparison, spot diagrams on the retinal field and Modulation Transfer Function （MTF） ***：Zernike coefficients for the aberrations, Airy disk diameter, root mean square （RMS） error diameter and total axial length of the model were provided from the program. These were compared between them in all distances. The Navarro model had the smallest axial length change as a simple model. The Arizona did not change its axial length because it is designed to be accommodative. The Liou-Brennan model had different results concerning the aberrations because of the decentration of the pupil. The MTF graphs showed small differences between the models because of the differences in their ***： All the three models are able to simulate accommodation with the expected results. There is no model that can be assumed as the best choice. Accommodation can be simulated in non-accommodativemodels and in customized ones.
