Pyrroloquinoline quinone:a potential neuroprotective compound for neurodegenerative diseases targeting metabolism

Pyrroloquinoline quinone is a quinone described as a cofactor for many bacterial dehydrogenases and is reported to exert an effect on metabolism in mammalian cells/*** quinone is present in the diet being available in foodstuffs,conferring the potential of this compound to be supplemented by dietary *** quinone’s nutritional role in mammalian health is supported by the extensive deficits in reproduction,growth,and immunity resulting from the dietary absence of pyrroloquinoline quinone,and as such,pyrroloquinoline quinone has been considered as a“new vitamin.”Although the classification of pyrroloquinoline quinone as a vitamin needs to be properly established,the wide range of benefits for health provided has been reported in many *** this respect,pyrroloquinoline quinone seems to be particularly involved in regulating cell signaling pathways that promote metabolic and mitochondrial processes in many experimental contexts,thus dictating the rationale to consider pyrroloquinoline quinone as a vital compound for mammalian *** the regulation of different metabolic mechanisms,pyrroloquinoline quinone may improve clinical deficits where dysfunctional metabolism and mitochondrial activity contribute to induce cell damage and *** quinone has been demonstrated to have neuroprotective properties in different experimental models of neurodegeneration,although the link between pyrroloquinoline quinone-promoted metabolism and improved neuronal viability in some of such contexts is still to be fully ***,we review the general properties of pyrroloquinoline quinone and its capacity to modulate metabolic and mitochondrial mechanisms in physiological *** addition,we analyze the neuroprotective properties of pyrroloquinoline quinone in different neurodegenerative conditions and consider future perspectives for pyrroloquinoline quinone’s potential in health and disease.

iStent inject trabecular microbypass stent implantation with cataract extraction in open-angle glaucoma:early clinical experience

Background:Retrospective,consecutive case series to evaluate the implantation of two second-generation trabecular microbypass stents in combination with cataract surgery in a real-world,clinical ***:The series included 56 eyes implanted with the iStent inject device with *** series consisted of eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma(n=52)and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma(n=4).Primary outcome measures included intraocular pressure(IOP)and number of glaucoma *** outcomes included the need for secondary surgical intervention and the incidence of IOP spikes≥10 mmHg and≥15 ***:IOP was reduced by 21%to 14.7±2.9 mmHg(p<0.01)at 6 months postoperative from 18.7±5.8 mmHg at ***,the mean number of glaucoma medications was 1.5±0.9 and reduced by 39%to 0.9±1.2(p<0.01)at 6 *** 6 months,68%of eyes had an IOP≤15 mmHg,increased from 30%at baseline.55%of eyes were medication-free at 6 months,up from 18%at *** were no severe postoperative *** eyes underwent an additional glaucoma ***:Implantation of the iStent inject device with concomitant cataract surgery effectively provides a sustained reduction in IOP with a markedly improved medication burden out to 6 months *** safety profile is excellent.

Association between axial length and toric intraocular lens rotation according to an online toric back-calculator

vision navigation for aircrafts based on 3D reconstruction from real-time image sequences

In this paper,we propose a novel vision navigation method based on three-dimensional(3D)reconstruction from real-time image *** adapts 3D reconstruction and terrain matching to establish the correspondence between image points and3D space points and the terrain reference(by using a digital elevation map(DEM)).An adaptive weighted orthogonal iterative pose estimation method is employed to calculate the position and attitude angle of the *** and real experiments show that the proposed method is capable of providing accurate navigation parameters for a long-endurance flight without using a global positioning system or an inertial navigation system(INS).Moreover,it can be combined with an INS to achieve an improved navigation result.

Color reproduction from desktop display to projector based on visual matching

We present a novel method of color reproduction from desktop displays to projectors via visual assessment. The model is based on visual matching nine color patches between a display and a projector. The effects of the method to improve color reproduction are tested for 30 samples by visual and color difference evaluations. The expeirmental results of visual evaluation show that the color reproduction is improved by 87.5%. The maximum, minimum, and average color differences between the displayed colors and the projected ones before and after correction are 28.94, 4.35, 16.78, 16.51, 0.64, and 3.51 △Eab^＊ units respectively, which are consistent with the results of visual evaluation.

Aberration changes of the corneal anterior surface following discontinued use of rigid gas permeable contact lenses

AIM: To record aberrations with a corneal topographic device on the anterior surface of the cornea at different time-points prior to wearing and following discontinued use of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. The effect of wearing RGP on the anterior surface of the cornea was discussed to provide guidance for clinical refractive error ***: The study objects were 24 eyes from 24 patients. All patients underwent identical examination procedures prior to lens use, as well as afterwards, including slit-lamp examination, non-contact tonometer measurement, computer optometry and corneal curvature measurement, subjective refraction test, and corneal topography analysis. The patients wore contact lenses everyday for 1 month and then discontinued. Corneal topographies were recorded at certain time points of 30 minutes, 1 day, 3, 7 and 14 days following ***: Total corneal aberration at each time point following discontinued use of RGP contact lenses was less than the time point prior to use. Detailed results were as follows: root mean square (RMS) (pre)=(1.438± 0.328)μm, RMS (30 minutes) =(1.076 ±0.355)μm, RMS (1 day) =(1.362 ±0.402)μm, RMS (3 days) =(1.373 ±0.398)μm, RMS (7 days) =(1.387 ±0.415)μm, and RMS (14 days) = (1.430±0.423)μm. Results showed that at 30 minutes after discontinued use of RGP contact lenses, almost all 2 ndand 3 rd-order aberrations change. Quadrafoil Z10 and spherical Z12 of the 4 th-order were also changed. Alterations to Z5, Z6, and Z12 at 1 day after discontinued use were significant differences compared with the time period prior to RGP use: Z5 and Z6 decreased, and Z12 increased slightly. Z5 and Z6 remained decreased at 3 days after discontinued use, but Z9 and Z10 continued to increase and Z12 returned to levels prior to RGP use. Palmprint Recognition by Applying Wavelet-Based Kernel PCA

This paper presents a wavelet-based kernel Principal Component Analysis （PCA） method by integrating the Daubechies wavelet representation of palm images and the kernel PCA method for palmprint recognition. Kernel PCA is a technique for nonlinear dimension reduction of data with an underlying nonlinear spatial structure. The intensity values of the palmprint image are first normalized by using mean and standard deviation. The palmprint is then transformed into the wavelet domain to decompose palm images and the lowest resolution subband coefficients are chosen for palm representation. The kernel PCA method is then applied to extract non-linear features from the subband coefficients. Finally, similarity measurement is accomplished by using weighted Euclidean linear distance-based nearest neighbor classifier. Experimental results on PolyU Palmprint Databases demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves highly competitive performance with respect to the published palmprint recognition approaches.

Precise monocular vision-based pose measurement system for lunar surface sampling manipulator

Space manipulator has been playing an increasingly important role in space exploration due to its flexibility and versatility. This paper is to design a vision-based pose measurement system for a four-degree-of-freedom(4-DOF) lunar surface sampling manipulator relying on a monitoring camera and several fiducial markers. The system first employs double plateaus histogram equalization for the markers to improve the robustness to varying noise and illumination. The markers are then accurately extracted in sub-pixel based on template matching and curved surface fitting. Finally, given the camera parameters and 3D reference points, the pose of the manipulator end-effector is solved from the 3D-to-2D point correspondences by combining a plane-based pose estimation method with rigid-body transformation. Experiment results show that the system achieves highprecision positioning and orientation performance. The measurement error is within 3 mm in position, and 0.2° in orientation,meeting the requirements for space manipulator operations.
