Coastal morphological modeling to assess the dynamics of Arklow Bank, Ireland

A numerical modeling and simulation experiment is carried out to assess the sediment dynamics of Arklow Bank, Ireland. To meet a requirement for favorable site selection to establish windmills on the bank, the long-term morphological changes of the coast are studied using the CAMS (Coastal Area Morphological Shell) model of the Mike-21 suite of programs. The morphological modeling of the bank was accomplished by pursuing a probabilistic approach for the observed tide and wave characteristics that contribute significantly to the sediment transport processes over the bank. A series of simulations are performed using Mike-21 NSW (Nearshore Spectral Wind-Wave), HD (Hydrodynamic), and ST (Sand Transport) models to establish the coastal hydraulics parameters. The results of the morphological modeling showed that generally the bank is dynamically stable with most areas of the bank having average bed level changes on the order of ±8 cm/day.

By the addition of superplasticizer and air entraining agent,manufactured sand selfcompacting concrete(MS SCC)with slump flow varying from 500 to 700 mm and air content varying from 2.0%to 9.0%were prepared and the pumpability of MS SCC was studied by a sliding pipe rheometer(Sliper).According to the Kaplan’s model,the initial pump pressure and the pump resistance of MS SCC were ***,rheological properties including the yield stress and the plastic viscosity of MS SCC were measured by a *** experimental results show that the increase of slump flow contributes to a higher pumpability and a proper air content,i e,6%is beneficial for the pumpability of MS *** to the existence of stone powder and stronger angularity of MS,the initial pump pressure of MS SCC is only about 60%-88%that of river sand(RS)SCC with the same slump flow and air content,indicating that MS SCC possesses a higher pumpability than RS SCC.

The efficacy of different combinations of undervine and inter-row treatments for managing a soil-dwelling orthopteran pest, weta （Hemiandrus sp.）, in vineyards was investigated over 2 seasons. This insect damages vine buds, thus reducing subsequent grape yield. The undervine treatments comprised pea straw mulch, mussel shells, tick beans [Viciafaba Linn. var minor （Fab）], plastic sleeves on vine trunks （treated control） and control （no intervention）, while inter-rows contained either the existing vegetation or tick beans. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 10 replicates. Data were collected on weta densities, damage to beans and components of yield. The latter were numbers of bud laid down per vine, shoots per bud, clusters per shoot, grape bunches per vine, bunch weight and yield. The undervine treatments significantly affected all variables except the number of shoots per bud. In contrast, none of the variables was significantly affected by the inter-row treatments or their interaction with undervine treatments, apart from weta density. At the end of the experiment, weta density in the shell treatment was about 58% lower than in the control. As a result, there was about 39% significant yield increase in that treatment compared to the control. Although the undervine beans and sleeves treatments increased yield, there were no reductions in weta density. With undervine beans, the insect fed on the bean plants instead of vine buds. Thus, yield in that treatment was approximately 28% higher than in the control. These results demonstrate that simple agroecological management approaches can reduce above-ground damage by soil-dwelling insects.

Aluminum Nitride(AlN)ceramics were soldered to Cu substrate using active metallized Sn0.3Ag0.7Cu-x%Ti(wt.%,where x=2,4,6,8)at 250℃.This process yielded a robust and closely integrated metallized layer on the AlN ceramic’s *** SnAgCu solder paste within an air atmosphere,joints were formed for durations of 60s and 300 *** meticulous microscopic analysis,optimal metallization parameters were identified,resulting in the successful connection between metallized AlN ceramics and Cu substrate at a low *** microstructure interface investigation further elucidated the impact of connection time on the low-temperature soldered joint of metallized AlN ceramics.

Short-leg shear wall structures are a new form of building structure that combine the merits of both frame and shear wall structures. Its architectural features, structure bearing and engineering cost are reasonable. To analyze the elastic-plastic response of a short-leg shear wall structure during an earthquake, this study modified the multiple-vertical-rod element model of the shear wall, considered the shear lag effect and proposed a multiple-vertical-rod element coupling beam model with a new local stiffness domain. Based on the principle of minimum potential energy and the variational principle, the stiffness matrixes of a short-leg shear wall and a coupling beam are derived in this study. Furthermore, the bending shear correlation for the analysis of different parameters to describe the structure, such as the beam height to span ratio, short-leg shear wall height to thickness ratio, and steel ratio are introduced. The results show that the height to span ratio directly affects the structural integrity; and the short-leg shear wall height to thickness ratio should be limited to a range of approximately 6.0 to 7.0. The design of short-leg shear walls should be in accordance with the ＂strong wall and weak beam＂ principle.

Feasibility of nonlinear and adaptive control methodologies in multivariable linear timeinvariant systems with state space realization {A, B, C} has apparently been limited by the standard strict passivity （or positive realness） conditions that imply that the product CB must be positive definite symmetric. More recently the symmetry condition has been mitigated, requiring instead that the not necessarily symmetric matrix CB be diagonalizable and with positive real eigenvalues. However, although the mitigated conditions are useful in proving pure stabilizability with Adaptive Controllers, the Model Tracking question has remained open and counterexamples seem to demonstrate total divergence of standard model reference adaptive controllers when the regular passivity conditions are not fully satisfied. Therefore, this paper further extends the previous results, showing that the new passivity conditions do guarantee stability with adaptive model tracking. Examples show how the new conditions solve the case of flexible structures with unknown parameters when perfect collocation is not possible. Also, the so-called counterexamples become simple, well-behaved, examples.

Geochemical analysis through field samples and laboratory testing is a well-trodden method for understanding the composition of soil and water. The limitation of this approach is in the spatial extrapolation of these diagnostic point-location samples. Over large areas such as operational and closed mine sites, sampling can be labor intensive and present potential health, safety and environment protection issues associated with the sampling. Hyperspectral image analysis has been shown to identify an object＇s spectral composition and discretize it from its surroundings. SLR consulting limited has been developing a methodology to assess the chemistry of soil and surface water using mounted hyperspectical sensors, and to combine these to provide greater accuracy and precision insights across sites with known mine water contamination issues. Through the use of case studies in the Ireland and US, SLR presents the application of drone based hyperspectral analysis. The studies have shown that the use of drone based hyperspectical sensors provide an excellent potential for the surveying of mining land-use and mining legacy sites. The surveys provide benefits in supporting soil and water geochemical investigation at active and historic mining sites both in data acquisition and also area coverage.
