Diversity of beetle species and functional traits along gradients of deadwood suggests weak environmental filtering

Background: Gradients in local environmental characteristics may favour the abundance of species with particular traits, while other species decline, or favour species with different traits at the same time, without an increase in average species abundances. Therefore, we asked: do variations in species and traits differ along gradients of deadwood variables? Do species abundance and trait occurrence change with species richness within or between functional groups? Thus, we analysed the beetle assemblages of five forest sites located in Italy, along the Apennines ***: From 2012 to 2018 we sampled beetles and five deadwood types in 193 plots to characterise the deadwood gradient: standing dead trees, snags, dead downed trees, coarse woody debris, and stumps. We modelled beetle species relative abundances and trophic traits occurrences against the deadwood variables using joint species distribution ***: Out of 462 species, only 77 showed significant responses to at least one deadwood type, with a weak mean response across species. Trophic groups showed mostly negative responses to deadwood variables. Species abundance increased with species richness among sites only for phytophagous and saproxylophagous. Trait occurrence did not increase with species richness among sites, except for phytophagous and ***, trait occurrence changed significantly with species richness of several trophic groups within some *** found that increases in species richness do not result in decreases in species abundance of a given trophic group, but rather null or positive relationships were found suggesting low interspecific ***: Our findings suggest that in Mediterranean mountain forests there is still room for increasing the level of naturalness, at least for what concerns deadwood management. Objective:Neuraxial anesthesia(NA)showed to reduce both morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing laparoscopic *** aimed to investigate the use of NA in patients undergoing transperitoneal three-dimensional laparoscopic radical prostatectomy(t-3DLRP)and compare the intraoperative and postoperative outcomes with a control group of patients undergoing t-3DLRP under general anesthesia(GA).Methods:A prospective,double-center,double-surgeon study cohort of 84 consecutive patients undergoing t-3DLRP between June 2019 and June 2021 was analyzed.A study group of 42 patients undergoing t-3DLRP under NA was compared with a control group of 42 patients undergoing t-3DLRP under ***:The two group were similar in all demographic,clinical,and pathological *** blood gas parameters were within physiologic limits in both *** relaxation was adequate for surgery during both NA and *** length of stay was 1 day shorter for NA group than GA group(5 days vs.6 days,p=0.05).t-3DLRP under NA had a statistically lower rate of minor complications(4.8%vs.19.0%,p=0.03)and less postoperative pain(median numeric rating scale 3 vs.4,p=0.01)compared to *** major complications were observed in both *** more patients were willing to undergo a similar intervention under NA than GA(p=0.04).Conclusion:t-3DLRP under NA is a feasible and safe procedure,with less postoperative pain and fewer minor complications than the same procedure under *** allows the maintenance of muscle relaxation and respiratory excursions without interfering with surgery.

Objective: To retrospectively evaluate the open reduction internal fixation and total hip arthroplasty directions, results and complications associated with internal fixation in managing these fractures. Methods: In 8 years at 4 centers, 61 patients with associated acetabular fractures (Letournel classification) were treated. The patients were divided into two groups. The total hip arthoplasty (THA) group consisted of 30 patients, while the open reduction internal fixation group had 31 patients. The average age of the patients was 74.7 years. The following parameters were compared: the duration of surgery and hospitalization, the international unit of red blood cell concentrate transfusion, the time for the verticalization of the patient, perioperative complications, Harris hip score, and the short form (12) health survey. The clinical and radiographic follow-up was performed at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months and annually thereafter. Patients with post-traumatic osteoarthritis formed the third comparison group.P≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant according to the analytical Student’s t-test. Results: TheP Conclusions: Our experience shows that theTHA treatment for acetabular fractures in the elderly is to be preferred.

Spatial and compositional variation in the fungal communities of organic and conventionally grown apple fruit at the consumer point-of-purchase

The fungal diversity in harvested apples from organic or conventional management practices was analyzed in different fruit locations(stem end,calyx end,peel,and wounded flesh)shortly after fruit purchase(T1)and after 2 weeks of storage(T5).A total of 5,760,162 high-quality fungal sequences were recovered and assigned to 8,504 Operational Taxonomic *** of the phylum Ascomycota were dominant in all samples and accounted for 91.6%of the total number of detected *** was followed by Basidiomycota(8%),Chytridiomycota(0.1%),and unidentified fungi(0.3%).Alpha and beta diversity analyses revealed the presence of significantly different fungal populations in the investigated fruit *** detected fungi,the genus Penicillium prevailed in the peel and in the wounded flesh while Alternaria *** in the calyx and stem end samples that included apple core *** taxonomic units that appear to be closely related to pathogenic fungi associated with secondary human infections were present in peel and ***,significantly different populations were revealed in organic and conventional apples and this result was consistent in all investigated fruit parts(calyx end,peel,stem end,and wounded flesh).Several unique taxa were exclusively detected in organic apples suggesting that management practices may have been a contributing factor in determining the taxa *** contrast,little differences were revealed in the two assessment times(T1 and T5).Results of the present study represent an advancement of the current knowledge on the fungal microbiota in collected fruit tissues of apple.

Emergent and delayed hybrid external fixation management of tibial pilon fractures: A multicentric retrospective analysis of 80 patients

Objective:To report our experience with the hybrid external fixator in ***:We assessed 80 cases of pilon fracture treated with the external fixator during the period of January 2009 and December 2016:55 men (69%) and 30 women (33%) with a mean age of 40 years (range between 16 and 70 ). About 45 occurred as isolated trauma, 35 instead were politrauma. Each patient underwent standard radiographic examination and a CT examination. There were 28 open fractures (35%), (Gustilo type 1, 2 and 3) while closed fractures showed soft tissue involvement of various grade (2-3 Tscherne classification). In all cases, the external fixation, sometimes associated with other reduction and synthesis techniques, was used. The timing of surgery was dictated by the condition of the soft tissues. For clinical evaluation, the Mazur score with mean follow-ups at 12 months was ***:The final range of ankle motion was 15 dorsal and 10 plantar flexion. In about 80 cases there was an average Mazur score of83. The mean score was 90;in open fractures 85 to 72. Radiographic healing of fractures in 60 patients occurred in 120 days (mean 105 days), at the time when the external fixator was ***:Pilon fractures are complex and often present complications;the definitive treatment, in emergency or delayed, with hybrid external fixator permits a stable synthesis with minimal soft tissue damage. Weight bearing maybe allowed early and functional recovery is generally good.

Introduction Epiploic appendagitis(EA)is an acute inflammation of the pedunculated mesenteric fat attached to the colonic surface,distinguished into two forms:primary EA,seemingly elicited by local ischaemic factors;and secondary EA(SEA),elicited by the inflammation of the adjacent organs,with diverticulitis being the most common trigger[1].Few case series have described the association between SEA and inflammatory bowel disease(IBD);however,information about clinical,laboratory and imaging findings,outcomes,and the impact of IBD-specific therapy were not *** first report the case of a woman affected by ulcerative colitis(UC)who developed a SEA during vedolizumab therapy(Figure 1A).
