Causes of Cretaceous subduction termination below South China and Borneo:Was the Proto-South China Sea underlain by an oceanic plateau?

The South China,Indochina,and Borneo margins surrounding the South China Sea contain long-lived arcs that became inactive at approximately 85 Ma,even though an embayment of oceanic crust(the‘Proto-South China Sea’)remained in the intervening *** oceanic crust eventually subducted in the Cenozoic below Borneo and the Cagayan arc,while the modern South China Sea opened in its *** investigate the enigmatic cessation of Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo,we studied a fragment of oceanic crust and overlying trench-fill sediments that accreted to NW Borneo during the final stages of Paleo-Pacific *** on radiolarian biostratigraphy of cherts overlying the pillow basalts and detrital zircon geochronology of the trench-fill,we constrained the minimum age of the oceanic crust during accretion to 40 *** shows that subduction cessation was not related to ridge *** analysis of pillow basalts revealed an enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt signature comparable to oceanic *** paleomagnetism,we show that this fragment of oceanic crust was not part of the Izanagi Plate but was part of a plate(the‘Pontus’Plate)separated from the Izanagi Plate by a subduction *** on the minimum 40 Ma age of the oceanic crust and its geochemistry,we suggest that Mesozoic subduction below South China and Borneo stopped when an oceanic plateau entered the trench,while the eastern plate margin with the Izanagi Plate remained *** show how our findings offer opportunities to restore plate configurations of the Panthalassa-Tethys junction region.

Global warming during the Miocene Climate Optimum(MCO,~17-14 million years ago)is associated with massive carbon emissions sourced from the flood basalt volcanism and ocean crustal ***,the perturbation of tectonic carbon degassing on the interaction between climate change and carbon cycle remains ***,through time-evolutive phase analysis of new and published high-resolution benthic foraminiferal oxygen(δ^(18)O)and carbon(δ^(13)C)isotope records from the global ocean,we find that variations in the marine carbon cycle lead the climate-cryosphere system(δ^(13)Clead-δ^(18)O)on 405,000-year eccentricity timescales during the *** is in contrast to the previously reported climate-lead-carbon(δ^(18)O-lead-δ^(13)C)scenario during most of the Oligo-Miocene(~34-6 million years ago).Further sensitivity analysis and model simulations suggest that the elevated atmospheric CO_(2) concentrations and the resulting greenhouse effect strengthened the low-latitude hydrological cycle during the MCO,accelerating the response of marine carbon cycle to eccentricity *** climate processes played a more important role in regulating carbon-cycle variations when Earth's climate was in a warm regime,as opposed to the dominant influence of polar ice-sheet dynamics during the PlioPleistocene(after~6 million years ago).

A new trapezoidal-mesh based data model for spatial operations

This paper presents a new spatial data model based on trapezoidal-mesh for implementing spatial operations within geographical information systems(GIS).Based only on the solid foundation of spatial operations,diversified application models can be established to bridge the gap between Digital Earth models and the real world with its real-world problems(‘connecting through location’).In this paper,the involved polygon features are decomposed into a series of trapezoidal***,geo-processing operations are employed on these meshes rather than the original polygon features,resulting in a relatively simple spatial *** a kind of model designed by integrating raster with vector,the model presented here has advantages over other models when carrying out spatial operations insofar as providing a solid foundation for achieving the grand goal of Digital *** concept of this data model and the two extensive examples of its application in spatial operations are elaborated upon in this *** a result,this article and the research that supports it,proves that the adoption of the trapezoidal-mesh model greatly improves the efficiency of spatial operations in GIS.

The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition

The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition is one of the most intensively studied periods in Earth History. The rapid climate and environmental changes that occurred during the transition can be used to test ideas about the functioning of our climate system. The stratigraphy of this period has been thoroughly investigated and, in particular, the recently proposed event stratigraphy for the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition based on the Greenland ice core records serves as a tool for synchronisation of records from the ice, marine and terrestrial environment.

Morphodynamic signatures derived from daily surface elevation dynamics can explain the morphodynamic development of tidal flats

Understanding the sensitivity of tidal flats to environmental changes is ***,most studies rely on process-based models to systematically explain the morphodynamic evolution of tidal *** this study,we proposed an alternative empirical approach to explore tidal flat dynamics using statistical indices based on long-term time series of daily surface elevation *** elevation dynamic(SED)indices focus on the magnitude and period of surface elevation changes,while morphodynamic signature(MDS)indices relate sediment dynamics to environmental *** statistical analyses were applied to an intervention site in the Netherlands to determine the effect of recently constructed groynes on the tidal *** these analyses,we were able to(1)detect a reduction in the daily SED and(2)determine that the changes in the daily SED were predominantly caused by the reduction in wave impact between the groynes rather than the reduction in tidal ***,the presented results showed that the combination of novel statistical indices provides new insights into the trajectories of tidal flats,ecosystem functioning,and sensitivity to physical drivers(wind and tides).Finally,we suggested how the SED and MDS indices may help to explore the future trajectories and climate resilience of intertidal habitats.

Coordination of Urbanization and Water Ecological Environment in Shayinghe River Basin,China

During the rapid industrialization and urbanization of China,urban agglomeration in river basin areas raises the problems of over-use of water resources and pollution of the water *** research in China has mainly focused on the conflicts among economic growth,urban expansion and water resource shortages within admin-istrative ***,water environments are much more dependent on their physical boundaries than their administrative *** with the nature of water environment,this study aims at analyzing coordination relationships between urban development and water environment changes within physical river basin *** chose the Shayinghe River Basin,China,as our case study area which is facing serious challenges related to water en-vironment *** we classified 35 county-level administrative units into upstream,midstream and down-stream regions based on their physical characteristics;analyzed the coordination degree of urban agglomeration using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method;and constructed cooperative models using the Linear Programming (LP function) to simulate four scenarios of the coordination relationship be-tween urban population increase and water environment protection based on existing water resources and water pollu-tion *** results show that the present coordinative situation in Shayinghe River Basin is not *** gen-eral,more than 50% administrative units are in the bad coordinative *** particular,the downstream region is under worse condition than the upstream and midstream *** models in scenario analyses indicate that the population scale set in existing urban master plannings is not coordinated with the water environment *** reach the goal of regional sustainable development,the total population needs to be controlled such that it will re-main at 4.5×10 7 or below by 2020 given the capacity of w

Insights into the radial water jet drilling technology-Application in a quarry

In this context, we applied the radial water jet drilling(RJD) technology to drill five horizontal holes into a quarry wall of the Gildehaus quarry close to Bad Bntheim, Germany. For testing the state-of-the-art jetting technology, a jetting experiment was performed to investigate the influence of geological heterogeneity on the jetting performance and the hole geometry, the influence of nozzle geometry and jetting pressure on the rate of penetration, and the possibility of localising the jetting nozzle utilizing acoustic activity. It is observed that the jetted holes can intersect fractures under varying angles, and the jetted holes do not follow a straight path when jetting at ambient surface condition. Cuttings from the jetting process retrieved from the holes can be used to estimate the reservoir rock permeability. Within the quarry, we did not observe a change in the rate of penetration due to jetting pressure *** monitoring was partially successful in estimating the nozzle location. Although the experiments were performed at ambient surface conditions, the results can give recommendations for a downhole application in deep wells.

The Muruntau gold deposit in the Central Kyzylkum,Uzbekistan is one of the largest single gold deposits *** available from the literature are reviewed with the aim to（1） integrate the present knowledge on this unique deposit from Russian and English literature;（2） show the considerable progress made in the understanding of the genesis of the Muruntau deposit during the last decades;and（3） point to problems still open for future *** formation occurred through a multi-stage process involving sedimentation,regional metamorphism including thrusting,magmatism with formation of hornfels aureoles and several stages of hydrothermal *** to recent knowledge,synsedimentary or pure metamorphic formation of gold mineralization seems *** role of granite magmatism occurring roughly within the same time interval as the main hydrothermal gold precipitation remains *** are no signs of interaction of matter between the magma（s） and the hydrothermal system（s）.On the other hand,there was an intense,high-temperature（above 400 ℃）fluid- wall rock interaction resulting in the formation of gold-bearing,cone-like stockworks with veins,veinlets and gold-bearing *** chemical and isotope indicators hint at an involvement of lower-crustal or mantle-related sources as well as of surface waters in ore *** formation through brecciation involving explosion,hydrothermal or tectonic breccias might explain these *** investigations on breccia formation as well as on the exact timing of relevant sedimentary,metamorphic,magmatic and hydrothermal events are recommended.
