central asia(CA)is one of the most drought-prone regions in the world with complex climate regimes,it is extremely vulnerable to water *** studies on drought in CA,as a whole,have been carried out,whereas there is a lack of studies on the drying and wetting trends of different climatic zones within *** this study,CA was divided into three different climatic zones based on the Koppen climate classification method,precipitation climatology,and aridity *** were the temperate continental(Df),dry arid desert(BW),and Mediterranean continental(Ds)climatic *** regional drying and wetting trends during the years 1961—2015 were investigated using the monthly gridded Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI).The empirical orthogonal function(EOF)was applied to analyze spatial and temporal variation *** mode 1(EOF1)analysis found increasingly wet conditions throughout CA over the duration of the study,and EOF mode 2(EOF2)analysis found a contrast between northern and southern CA:as Df became drier and BW and Ds became *** mode 3(EOF3)analysis found a western and eastern inverse phase *** SPEI displayed a decreasing trend from 1961 to 1974 for CA as a whole,before increasing from 1975 to 2015,with a particularly significant increase over the first seven years of that *** a regional scale,the BW and Ds zones experienced a wetting trend due to increased precipitation during 1961—2015,but the Df zone experienced a drying trend due to reduced evapotranspiration and an increasing temperature,particularly from 1961 to ***,the spatio-temporal patterns in dryness and wetness across CA can be categorized according to climatic regions.

Ocean-atmosphere Teleconnections Play a Key Role in the Interannual Variability of Seasonal Gross Primary Production in China

Since the 1950s,the terrestrial carbon uptake has been characterized by interannual variations,which are mainly determined by interannual variations in gross primary production(GPP).Using an ensemble of seven-member TRENDY(Trends in Net Land-Atmosphere Carbon Exchanges)simulations during 1951-2010,the relationships of the interannual variability of seasonal GPP in China with the sea surface temperature(SST)and atmospheric circulations were *** GPP signals that mostly relate to the climate forcing in terms of Residual Principal Component analysis(hereafter,R-PC)were identified by separating out the significant impact from the linear trend and the GPP *** showed that the seasonal GPP over China associated with the first R-PC1(the second R-PC2)during spring to autumn show a monopole(dipole or tripole)spatial structure,with a clear seasonal evolution for their maximum centers from springtime to *** dominant two GPP R-PC are significantly related to Sea Surface Temperature(SST)variability in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean during spring to autumn,implying influences from the El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO).The identified SST and circulation factors explain 13%,23%and 19%of the total variance for seasonal GPP in spring,summer and autumn,respectively.A clearer understanding of the relationships of China’s GPP with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections over the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean should provide scientific support for achieving carbon neutrality targets.

Glaciers are highly sensitive to climate change and are undergoing significant changes in *** this study,we analyzed the spatiotemporal changes of typical glaciers and their responses to climate change in the period of 1990-2015 in 4 different mountainous sub-regions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of Northwest China:the Bogda Peak and Karlik Mountain sub-regions in the Tianshan Mountains;the Yinsugaiti Glacier sub-region in the Karakorum Mountains;and the Youyi Peak sub-region in the Altay *** standardized snow cover index(NDSI)and correlation analysis were used to reveal the glacier area changes in the 4 sub-regions from 1990 to *** areas in the Bogda Peak,Karlik Mountain,Yinsugaiti Glacier,and Youyi Peak sub-regions in the period of 1990-2015 decreased by 57.7,369.1,369.1,and 170.4 km^(2),*** of glacier area center of gravity showed that quadrant changes of glacier areas in the 4 sub-regions moved towards the *** area on the south aspect of the Karlik Mountain sub-region was larger than that on the north aspect,while glacier areas on the north aspect of the other 3 sub-regions were larger than those on the south *** precipitation in the Karlik Mountain sub-region inhibited the retreat of glaciers to a certain ***,glacier area changes in the Bogda Peak and Youyi Peak sub-regions were not sensitive to the increased *** a seasonal time scale,glacier area changes in the Bogda Peak,Karlik Mountain,Yinsugaiti Glacier,and Youyi Peak sub-regions were mainly caused by accumulated temperature in the wet season;on an annual time scale,the correlation coefficient between glacier area and annual average temperature was-0.72 and passed the significance test at P<0.05 level in the Karlik Mountain *** findings of this study can provide a scientific basis for water resources management in the arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China in the context of global warmin

To quantify the relative contributions of Arctic sea ice and unforced atmospheric internal variability to the “warm Arctic, cold East asia”(WACE) teleconnection, this study analyses three sets of large-ensemble simulations carried out by the Norwegian Earth System Model with a coupled atmosphere–land surface model, forced by seasonal sea ice conditions from preindustrial, present-day, and future periods. Each ensemble member within the same set uses the same forcing but with small perturbations to the atmospheric initial state. Hence, the difference between the present-day(or future) ensemble mean and the preindustrial ensemble mean provides the ice-loss-induced response, while the difference of the individual members within the present-day(or future) set is the effect of atmospheric internal variability. Results indicate that both present-day and future sea ice loss can force a negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation with a WACE pattern in winter. The magnitude of ice-induced Arctic warming is over four(ten) times larger than the ice-induced East asian cooling in the present-day(future) experiment;the latter having a magnitude that is about 30% of the observed cooling. Sea ice loss contributes about 60%(80%) to the Arctic winter warming in the present-day(future) experiment. Atmospheric internal variability can also induce a WACE pattern with comparable magnitudes between the Arctic and East asia. Ice-lossinduced East asian cooling can easily be masked by atmospheric internal variability effects because random atmospheric internal variability may induce a larger magnitude warming. The observed WACE pattern occurs as a result of both Arctic sea ice loss and atmospheric internal variability, with the former dominating Arctic warming and the latter dominating East asian cooling.

Air quality monitoring is effective for timely understanding of the current air quality status of a region or ***,the huge volume of environmental monitoring data,which has reasonable real-time performance,provides strong support for in-depth analysis of air pollution characteristics and ***,in the era of big data,to meet current demands for fine management of the atmospheric environment,it is important to explore the characteristics and causes of air pollution from multiple aspects for comprehensive and scientific evaluation of air *** study reviewed and summarized air quality evaluation methods on the basis of environmental monitoring data statistics during the 13th Five-Year Plan period,and evaluated the level of air pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and its surrounding areas(i.e.,the“2+26”region)during the period of the three-year action plan to fight air *** suggest that air quality should be comprehensively,deeply,and scientifically evaluated from the aspects of air pollution characteristics,causes,and influences of meteorological conditions and anthropogenic *** is also suggested that a threeyear moving average be introduced as one of the evaluation indexes of long-term change of ***,both temporal and spatial differences should be considered when removing confounding meteorological factors.

Nutrition impacts of non-solid cooking fuel adoption on under-five children in developing countries

This paper examines the nutrition impacts of using non-solid cooking fuel on under-five children in developing *** draw on data from more than 1.12 million children in 62 developing countries from the Demographic and Health Surveys(DHS).Results from both fixed effects(FE)and instrumental variable(IV)estimates show that using non-solid cooking fuel significantly improves the nutrition outcomes of under-five *** with their peers from households mainly using solid fuel,children from households mainly using non-solid fuel exhibit a lower probability of experiencing stunting(by 5.9 percentage points)and being underweight(by 1.2 percentage points).Our further investigation provides evidence for several underlying mechanisms,such as improved indoor air quality,induced reduction in children’s respiratory symptoms,benefits on maternal health,and reduction in maternal time spent on fuel collection or *** analyses suggest that the nutrition benefits of using non-solid cooking fuel are more prominent among boys,children above three years old,and those from households of lower socioeconomic status,rural areas,and Southeast asia.

As a vital type of light-absorbing aerosol,brown carbon(BrC)presents inherent associations with atmospheric photochemistry and climate ***,the understanding of the chemical and optical properties of BrC is limited,especially in some resource-dependent cities with long heating periods in northwest *** study showed that the annual average abundances of Water-soluble BrC(WS-BrC)were 9.33±7.42 and 8.69±6.29μg/m^(3)in Baotou and Wuhai and the concentrations,absorption coefficient(Abs_(365)),and mass absorption efficiency(MAE365)of WS-BrC presented significant seasonal patterns,with high values in the heating season and low values in the non-heating season;while showing opposite seasonal trends for the Absorption Angstr?m exponent(AAE_(300-400)).Comparatively,the levels of WS-BrC in developing regions(such as cities in asia)were higher than those in developed regions(such as cities in Europe and Australia),indicating the significant differences in energy consumption in these *** combining fluorescence excitation-emission matrix(EEM)spectra with the parallel factor(PARAFAC)model,humic-like(C1 and C2)and proteinlike(C3)substances were identified,and accounted for 61.40%±4.66%and 38.6%±3.78%at Baotou,and 60.33%±6.29%and 39.67%±4.17%at Wuhai,*** results of source apportionment suggested that the potential source regions of WS-BrC varied in heating ***-heating seasons and that the properties of WS-BrC significantly depended on primary emissions(e.g.,combustion emissions)and secondary formation.
