Challenges and countermeasures of urban water systems against climate change:a perspective from China

urban water systems are facing various challenges against climate change,impacting cities’security and their sustainable ***,there are three major challenges:submersion risk of coastal cities as glaciers melt and sea level rises,more and severe urban flooding caused by extreme weather like intensified storm surge and heavy precipitation,and regional water resource patterns challenged by alteration of spatial distribution of *** this,two strategies including proactive adaptation and positive mitigation were proposed in this article to realize the reconstruction and optimization of urban water systems,to enhance their resilience,and eventually increase their adaptability and coping ability to climate *** proactive adaptation strategy consists of 1)construction of sponge cities to accommodate the increased regular rainfall and to balance the alterations of spatial redistribution of precipitation;2)reconstruction of excess stormwater discharge and detention system to increase capability for extreme precipitation events based on flood risk assessment under future climate change;3)deployment of forward-looking,ecological,and integrated measures to improve coastal protection capability against inundation risks caused by climate change and sea level *** positive mitigation strategy is to employ the systematic concept in planning and design and to adopt advanced applicable energy-saving technologies,processes,and management practices,aiming at reduction in flux of urban water systems,reinforcement in energy conservation and carbon reduction in both water supply systems and wastewater treatment systems,and thus a reduction of greenhouse gas emission from urban water systems.

Environmental sustainability modeling with exergy methodology for building life cycle

As an important human activity,the building industry has created comfortable space for living and work,and at the same time brought considerable pollution and huge consumption of energy and recourses. From 1990s after the first building environmental assessment model-BREEAM was released in the UK,a number of assessment models were formulated as analytical and practical in methodology respectively. This paper aims to introduce a generic model of exergy assessment on environmental impact of building life cycle,taking into consideration of previous models and focusing on natural environment as well as building life cycle,and three environmental impacts will be analyzed,namely energy embodied exergy,resource chemical exergy and abatement exergy on energy consumption,resource consumption and pollutant discharge respectively. The model of exergy assessment on environmental impact of building life cycle thus formulated contains two sub-models,one from the aspect of building energy utilization,and the other from building materials use. Combining theories by ecologists such as Odum,building environmental sustainability modeling with exergy methodology is put forward with the index of exergy footprint of building environmental impacts.

Fundamental experiments were carried out in a wave flume on internal solitary wave （ISW） of depression-type propagating over a submerged ridge. The seabed ridge included either triangular or semicircular shape - regarded as topographic obstacles. Influenced by the submarine ridge, the transmitted waves were found to always consist of a leading pulse （a solitary wave） followed by a dispersive wave train. The wave profile propagating over a triangular ridge was similar to that caused by a semicircular obstacle. Apparently, the smooth face of a semicircular ridge produced time lag of wave propagation. From experimental results available, the reduction in wave energy induced by a semicircular ridge was larger than that by a triangular one. The events of wave distortion, strong breaking, internal bolus, and stratification mixing happened in case that the crest of an ISW was great enough to interact with the topographic obstacle. The reduction in wave energy was induced by strong breaking, and it depended on the ridge height rather than the geometric shape of the ridge.

Can arbuscular mycorrhiza and fertilizer management reduce phosphorus runoff from paddy fields?

Our study sought to assess how much phosphorus（P） runoff from paddy fields could be cut down by fertilizer management and inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. A field experiment was conducted in Lalin River basin, in the northeast China： six nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer levels were provided（0, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% of the recommended fertilizer supply）, with or without inoculation with Glomus mosseae. The volume and concentrations of particle P（PP） and dissolved P（DP） were measured for each runoff during the rice growing season. It was found that the seasonal P runoff, including DP and PP, under the local fertilization was 3.7 kg/ha, with PP, rather than DP, being the main form of P in runoff water. Additionally, the seasonal P runoff dropped only by 8.9% when fertilization decreased by 20%; rice yields decreased with declining fertilization. We also found that inoculation increased rice yields and decreased P runoff at each fertilizer level and these effects were lower under higher fertilization. Conclusively, while rice yields were guaranteed arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation and fertilizer management would play a key role in reducing P runoff from paddy fields.

A genetic resampling particle filter for freeway traffic-state estimation

On-line estimation of the state of traffic based on data sampled by electronic detectors is important for intelligent traffic management and control. Because a nonlinear feature exists in the traffic state, and because particle filters have good characteristics when it comes to solving the nonlinear problem, a genetic resampling particle filter is proposed to estimate the state of freeway traffic. In this paper, a freeway section of the northern third ring road in the city of Beijing in China is considered as the experimental object. By analysing the traffic-state characteristics of the freeway, the traffic is modeled based on the second-order validated macroscopic traffic flow model. In order to solve the particle degeneration issue in the performance of the particle filter, a genetic mechanism is introduced into the resampling process. The realization of a genetic particle filter for freeway traffic-state estimation is discussed in detail, and the filter estimation performance is validated and evaluated by the achieved experimental data.

Machine learning parallel system for integrated process-model calibration and accuracy enhancement in sewer-river system

The process-based water system models have been transitioning from single-functional to integrated multi-objective and multi-functional since the worldwide digital upgrade of urban water system *** proliferation of model complexity results in more significant uncertainty and computational ***,conventional model calibration methods are insufficient in dealing with extensive computational time and limited monitoring *** we introduce a novel machine learning system designed to expedite parameter optimization with limited data and boost efficiency in parameter ***,termed the machine learning parallel system for fast parameter search of integrated process-based models,aims to enhance both the performance and efficiency of the integrated model by ensuring its comprehensiveness,accuracy,and *** was constructed upon the concept of model surrogation t algorithm optimization using Ant Colony Optimization(ACO)coupled with Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM).The optimization results of the Integrated sewer network and urban river model demonstrate that the average relative percentage difference of the predicted river pollutant concentrations increases from 1.1 to 6.0,and the average absolute percent bias decreases from 124.3%to 8.8%.The model outputs closely align with the monitoring data,and parameter calibration time is reduced by 89.94%.MLPS enables the efficient optimization of integrated process-based models,facilitating the application of highly precise complex models in environmental *** design of MLPS also presents valuable insights for optimizing complex models in other fields.

the bilingual education of negotiation has taken more and more Chinese educators’ attention. This paper, according to the practice and teaching experiences in Tianjin Institute of urban Construction, presented how to structure a course and which teaching skills can be used in the process of the negotiation bilingual education. The four challenges were listed and discussed in the end of the paper, included: the complexity of instructor’s role, the integration of teaching skills, English level of students, and participation attitude of students in the course.

Successes and failures of participation-in-design： Cases from Old Havana, Cuba

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced a crisis that forced it to change its housing approach. Self-help building programs began to supplant the construction of mass standardized housing estates. The Community Architect program was developed to provide design advice to self-help builders, and it expanded exponentially within a decade. By the year 2000, all municipalities across Cuba had their own Community Architect Office. White the approach of the Community Architect program has been hailed a breakthrough in the fields of planning and architecture, the particular case of Old Havana suggests that several obstacles prevent residents from benefiting from its services. The author identifies the strengths and limitations of the approach by looking at two home renovation projects in Old Havana and the perceptions of tow-income residents on the work done by community architects. This research indicates that participatory design methods should be complemented by community-based initiatives that address other aspects of the housing development process, such as access to materials, construction, and construction management.

China＇s provincial CO2 emissions embodied in trade with implications for regional climate policy

CO2 emissions embodied in trade have an important and far-reaching impact on CO2 emissions reduction obligations. Based on a multi-regional inputoutput analysis, this paper calculates China＇s provincial CO2 emissions embodied in trade and analyzes CO2 emissions embodied in trade per unit of value of trade in 30 Chinese provinces. Several climate policy options that potentially reduce the impact of trade on individual provinces are discussed. One finding from this study is that provincial CO2 emissions embodied in trade accounted for approximately 60.02% of China＇s CO2 emissions in 2007. The CO2 emissions embodied in imports and exports for 30 Chinese provinces differ widely, and remarkable differences in the CO2 emissions embodied in trade per unit of value of trade exist. Another important finding, is that if provinces take binding commitments as a part of a coalition, instead of as individual provinces, then the impacts of trade can be reduced. Notably, however, the extent of reduction in a coalition varies in different provinces.
