Recently,our group produced spin-polarized hydrogen(SPH)atoms at densities of at least 10^(19)cm^(-3)from the photodissociation of hydrogen halide molecules with circularly polarized UV light and measured them via magnetization-quantum beats with a pickup *** densities are approximately 7 orders of magnitude higher than those produced using conventional methods,opening up new fields of application,such as ultrafast magnetometry,the production of polarized MeV and GeV particle beams,such as electron beams with intensities approximately 10^(4)higher than current sources,and the study of polarized nuclear fusion,for which the reaction cross sections of D-T and D-(3)^He reactions are expected to increase by 50%for fully polarized nuclear *** review the production,detection,depolarization mechanisms,and potential applications of high-density SPH.

One of the most important tools in film analysis is ＂segmentation＂, as defined by the major film theorist Christian Metz, with the help of the ＂great syntagmatic＂（Grande Syntagmatique）; an array, which will guarantee the classification of any kind of shot in any kind of film and its consequent decoding. The division into sections allowed a clinical approach of high validity, highlighting the hidden rhymes, the power of repetition, the underlying pulses of the film, ＂decoding＂, in a way, their soul; in essence their meaning. However, by the mid-1970s, the semiotics of cinema was considered outdated and unrealistic, mainly because it failed to solve a problem to which it was believed that it held the key to guarantee the ＂translation＂ of any abstract cinematic form. In this text, we attempt to explore what semiotics can do today and how far ＂segmentation＂ can take us in the face of a particularly ＂opaque＂ film, which is made of fragments of impressions, disparate elements and contrasts, such as The Tree of Life （2011） by Terrence Malick.

The focus of this study is to investigate the school textbooks of Greek Language, particular emphasis being paid on the search via their content of the level of emergence of the Rights of the Child. The research focuses on the specific topic, as school textbooks are utilized at the most during schooling and also, as they constitute the basis for the linguistic transfer of messages, values, and attitudes, which are used in all subjects and in the majority of teaching activities and actions. In addition, school textbooks of Greek Language contribute significantly to the cultural understanding and development of the child. This whole dimension is attempted to be highlighted in the present study, the main outcome of which is that via the school textbooks of Greek Language of the last three grades of the Greek Primary School, the emergence of the Rights of the Child is attempted at a satisfactory level. The present research is an empirical approach to textbooks of Greek Language of Greek Primary School on the Rights of the Child and it is innovative, for being the first evaluative approach on the aforementioned issue, since the last review of school textbooks in the Greek.

Attainment of multifactorial treatment targets among the elderly in a lipid clinic

Objective To examine target attainment of lipid-lowering, antihypenensive and antidiabetic treatment in the elderly in a specialist set- ting of a university Hospital in Greece. Methods This was a retrospective study including consecutive subjects 〉 65 years old （n = 465） with a follow-up 〉 3 years. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol （LDL-C）, blood pressure （BP） and glycated hemoglobin （HbAlc） goal achievement were recorded according to European Society of Cardiology/European Atherosclerosis Society （ESC/EAS）, European Society of Hypertension （ESH）/ESC and European Association for the Study of Diabetes （EASD） guidelines. Results The LDL-C targets were attained by 27~,4, 48% and 62% of very high, high and moderate risk patients, respectively. Those receiving statin ＋ ezetimibe achieved higher rates of LDL-C goal achievement compared with those receiving statin monotherapy （48% vs. 33%, P 〈 0.05）. Of the diabetic sub- jects, 71% had BP 〈 140/85 mmHg, while 78% of those without diabetes had BP 〈 140/90 mmHg. A higher proportion of the non-diabetic individuals （86%） had BP 〈 150/90 mmHg. Also, a higher proportion of those with diabetes had HbAlc 〈 8% rather than 〈 7% （88% and 47%, respectively）. Of note, almost one out of three non-diabetic individuals and one out of ten diabetic individuals had achieved all three treatment targets. Conclusions Even in a specialist setting of a university Hospital, a high proportion of the elderly remain at suboptimal LDL-C, BP and HbAlc levels. The use of drug combinations could improve multifactorial treatment target attainment, while less strict tar- gets could be more easily achieved in this population.

Thiazide-associated hyponatremia in the elderly： what the clinician needs to know

Thiazide-induced hyponatremia is one of the main causes of decreased sodium levels in elderly individuals. This review presents the current evidence regarding the thiazide-associated hyponatremia. Thiazide-associated hyponatremia is observed mainly in patients with certain risk factors such as those receiving large doses of thiazides, having much comorbidity, such as heart failure, liver disease or malignancy, and taking several medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or tricyclic antide- pressants. Sodium concentration should be monitored in patients with risk factors for developing thiazide-associated hyponatremia and clini- cians should measure promptly serum sodium levels in patients with neurologic signs indicating reduced sodium levels. The clinical and biochemical profile of patients with thiazide-associated hyponatremia may be that of extracellular volume depletion or the syndrome of inap- propriate antidiuretic hormone secretion （SIADH）. The investigation of possible thiazide-associated hyponatremia includes the exclusion of other causes of decreased sodium levels and the identification of the characteristics of hyponatremia due to thiazides （extracellular volume depletion-related or SIADH-like）. Treatment should be carefully monitored to avoid serious neurologic complications due to overcorrection. Clinicians should discourage prescribing thiazides in patients with a history of diuretic-associated hyponatremia and should prefer low doses of thiazides in patients with risk factors for developing thiazide-associated hyponatremia.

Pregnancies achieved by assisted reproduction technologies, particularly by intracytoplasmic sperm injection （ICSI） procedures, are susceptible to genetic risks inherent to the male population treated with ICSI and additional risks inherent to this innovative procedure. The documented, as well as the theoretical, risks are discussed in the present review study. These risks mainly represent thatconsequences of the genetic abnormalities underlying male subfertility （or infertility） and might become stimulators for the development of novel approaches and applications in the treatment of infertility. In addition, risks with a polygenic background appearing at birth as congenital anomalies and other theoretical or stochastic risks are discussed. Recent data suggest that assisted reproductive technology might also affect epigenetic characteristics of the male gamete, the female gamete, or might have an impact on early embryogenesis. It might be also associated with an increased risk for genomic imprinting abnormalities.

In the modern educational reality, as it is influenced by the social developments, the diversity of school potential is intensely highlighted. At the same time, the standardization of the teaching process appears to be insufficient to meet the modern instructive requirements, while it is vastly supported that differentiated teaching can sufficiently respond to the modern instructive needs. Moreover, it is pointed out that differentiated teaching is another way of thinking on the instructive work. On that basis and with a view to investigating the functionalist dimensions of differentiated teaching, a research of empiric character was attempted geared toward at the investigation of attitudes and opinions of Greek primary school teachers with regard to the differentiated teaching. The structured questionnaire was used as a research tool and the main conclusions showed not only the limited briefing of the sample teachers, with regard to the theoretical and applicable functionalism of differentiated teaching, but also the conviction that the differentiated teaching has the potential to treat students equally while functioning as a driving force for the dynamic forming of knowledge by the students themselves.

Greek schools are witnessing widening gaps between traditional definitions and applications of literacy, which include reading, writing and speaking in terms of exercises from school textbooks and contemporary literacy practices like digital storytelling, interactive multimedia use and online communications. Language and literacy teachers of primary education are called upon daily to bridge these contradictions through pedagogical and textual choices they make in classroom teaching. This paper reports an experimental study with children of the fifth grade at public Greek schools to apply modernist literacy approaches involving digital storytelling and online communication in improving language skills. The paper analytically presents the didactic examples of a thematic union within the framework of the Greek curriculum and the alternative assessment for the experimental teaching on digital technologies among mother tongue learners. The findings have implications for teacher＇s and student＇s education and also for the integration of a pedagogical-technological content of curriculum within the continuing debate of being culturally and equally literate in today＇s education.

This study looks into new perspectives in preschoolers＇ assessment of being at risk for learning disabilities. Precisely, two innovative assessment approaches are examined in order to reveal new research perspectives. The first tool, a traditional approach, is the ＂Early Dyslexia Identification Test＂ and the second tool, a computerized approach, is an lnternet based Speech Pathology Diagnostic Expert System named ＂APLo＂. Both evaluate the sectors of phonological awareness, memory, psychomotor development, pre-writing and pre-reading skills in Greek. The findings o f the current study formulate three directions：（1） the complementary of speech language and learning disorders as a systemic approach, （2） the diagnosis of suspicious factors and compatibilities of learning disabilities even at the preschool age, and （3） the application of alternative methods of assessment aiming for a multidimentional approach with the combined prospect and potential of web tools in the early diagnosis and intervention in learning disabilities.
