Adaptation in brain structure and respiratory and olfactory structures across environmental gradients in African and North American muroid rodents

Morphometric studies of 3D micro CT-scanned images can provide insights into the evolution of the brain and sensory structures but such data are still scarce for the most diverse mammalian order of *** reviewed and new data,we tested for convergence to extreme aridity and high elevation in the sensory and brain morphology of rodents,from morphometric data from micro-CT X-ray scans of 174 crania of 16 species of three distantly re-lated African murid(soft-furred mice,Praomyini,laminate-toothed rats,Otomyini,and gerbils,Gerbillinae)clades and one North American cricetid(deer mice and white-footed mice,Peromyscus)*** studies demon-strated convergent evolution acting on the oval window area of the cochlea(enlarged in extremely arid-adapted species of Otomyini and Gerbillinae)and on endocranial volume(reduced in high elevation taxa of Otomyini and Peromyscus).However,contrary to our predictions,we did notfind evidence of convergence in brain struc-ture to aridity,or in the olfactory/respiratory system(turbinate bones)to high *** structure differed,particularly in the petrosal lobules of the cerebellum and the olfactory bulbs,between Otomyini and Gerbillinae,with extreme arid-adapted species in each clade being highly divergent(not convergent)from other species in the same *** observed greater“packing”of the maxillary turbinate bones,which have important respiratory functions,in Peromyscus mice from high and low elevations compared to the high-elevation African Praomyini,but more complex patterns within Peromyscus,probably related to trade-offs in respiratory physiology and heat exchange in the nasal epithelium associated with high-elevation adaptation.

Understanding autism spectrum disorder and coping mechanism by parents:An explorative study

Objective:This study aimed to explore the perceptions of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD)and their coping ***:The data of the study was collected using face-to-face semi-structured *** participants were purposefully selected from the three schools in Mpumalanga Province because they had children diagnosed with ASD and data was analyzed using thematic content *** this study,primary caregivers were *** the end,12 women were interviewed,and the data saturation was *** considerations and measures to ensure trustworthiness were carried out throughout the ***:The findings revealed two themes:caregivers’understanding and misconceptions of ASD and coping mechanisms used in dealing challenges of caring for a child with ASD;and five subthemes:lack of knowledge,cultural beliefs,prayer,strong support system,and ***:Based on the findings,more awareness campaigns should be done on ASD to increase parents’understanding of the *** the cultural beliefs of parents regarding ASD may assist health care professionals in developing care practices that are accepted in their culture,and may enhance parents’coping skills.

Modeling microwave drying kinetics and moisture diffusivity of Mabonde banana variety

This study investigates the microwave drying kinetics of thin layer Mabonde banana variety(MBV)at power levels between 100 and 300 *** mathematical drying models:Wang and Singh,Verma,Two-term,Page,Two term exponential,and Logarithmic models were fitted to experimental drying data obtained from the *** statistical consistency of the models was determined using statistical parameters including coefficient of determination,mean bias error,root mean square error,and reduced Chi *** migration from banana slices was described using the Fick’s diffusion *** effective diffusivity was *** results indicated that drying took place largely in the falling rate *** time required to reduce the moisture of banana to a certain level was dependent on the microwave output,being the longest at 100 W and shortest at 300 *** effective moisture diffusivity increased with increasing microwave power with values at 4.89×10^(-10),1.09×10^(-9) and 1.69×10^(-9) m^(2)/s at 100,200,and 300 W,*** Wang and Singh model gave the best results for the description of thin layer drying of MBV.

Phytochemical and antioxidant properties of different solvent extracts of Kirkia wilmsii tubers

Objective:To determine suitable phytochemical extraction solvents,screen for phytochemicals,determine the total phenol and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant activities of different solvent extracts of Kirkia wilmsii(***),an ethnomedicine in South ***:Extractions were performed from dried tubers of the *** plant,using several solvents and varying extraction *** yields were determined and suitable extraction solvents were *** phenol and flavonoid contents of the extracts were determined spectrophotometrically using gallic acid and quercetin as *** free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was investigated using l,l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl ***:Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of phenolics,flavonoids,terpenoids,tannins,cardenolide deoxy sugars and reducing *** the 12 solvent extracts used,six gave yields higher than 5%,while the other six gave yields less than 1%.The highest extract yield of 52.9%was obtained using 80%methanol while the lowest yield of 7.3%was obtained using ethanol at 60 *** 80%methanol,methanol/chloroform/water(12:5:3)and 60%methanol extracts were significantly higher than those of ethanol,methanol and water(P < 0.05).Total phenolic content recorded extracts ranged from(45.32 ± 0.50) to(122.84 ± 0.31) mg gallic acid equivalent per gram.A maximum total flavonoid content of(917.02 ± 0.10) mg quercetin equivalent per gram and a minimum of(206.26 ± 0.10) mg quercetin equivalent per gram were recorded for methanol and water,*** flavonoid content for methanol was significantly higher than all the other extracts(P < 0.05).The scavenging profiles of *** extracts were significantly lower(P < 0.05) than that of ascorbic acid and IC50 values ranged from 129.94 μg/mL for methanol to 225.04 μg/mL for *** IC50 value of 56.52μg/mL was obtained with ascorbic ***:Ethanol,methanol,methanol/chloroform/water,80%methanol,60%methanol

Physical properties of soil in Pine elliottii and Eucalyptus cloeziana plantations in the Vhembe biosphere,Limpopo Province of South Africa

Plantation establishment using invasive alien plants is common in South Africa,but the effects of these plants on soil physical properties in the Vhembe biosphere is *** this comparative study,soils underneath Pinus elliottii and Eucalyptus cloeziana were assessed for differences in physical properties compared to soils underneath adjacent natural sites in the Entabeni plantation in the Vhembe biosphere in Limpopo Province,South *** were collected from topsoil over 3 months and quantified for gravimetric soil moisture,penetration resistance,soil infiltration,hydraulic conductivity and soil water *** all 3 months,soils from both *** and *** plantations were compact and had low penetration resistance compared to soils from adjacent natural *** infiltration and hydraulic conductivity were significantly(p\0.05)lower in soils from plantations compared to soils from adjacent natural sites,and more so from the *** plantation than from *** water repellency was observed in soils from *** only in May and *** from the invasive alien tree plantation have decreased soil moisture,infiltration rate,hydraulic conductivity and are compact as well as repellent(only ***),all poor soil physical ***,this decline in soil physical properties was not uniform between the two invasive alien plantation species;hence we cannot generalize about the effects of invasive alien plantation species on soil physical properties,and further research is required across different ecological regions.

History of Apartheid Education and the Problems of Reconstruction in South Africa

This paper outlines the rationale of Bantu education that was available for South African Blacks from 1953 to 1992. The paper is of the opinion that challenges of constructing a new education system in post-apartheid South Africa cannot be fully grasped without a proper understanding of the pervasive impact of Bantu education on the majority for a period of almost 60 years. It also discusses the educational vision and goals of the important organizations in the liberation movement such as the African National Congress, the Azanian People＇s Organization, and the Pan Africanist Congress that continue to shape educational debates in the present educational reform context. The paper argues that the present curriculum by its very history and origins does not address the problems that have been created by the ideology of the former South African education system. Salient to these problems is the over-emphasis on Christian/European education that is not realistic in many regions of South Africa. The paper argues that curriculum has to reflect the cultural and racial diversity in South Africa, and further suggests that all languages and cultures in South Africa are essential in the building of an anti-racist and anti-sexist society. The monitoring of academic activity in a democratic education system can be confusing to teachers who have been trained within the confines of an apartheid （Bantu） education. The paper therefore suggests that more funds will have to be put aside by the government to upgrade the pedagogical approach of teachers so that they can be able to deal with their new role of leadership and the developing of content, and tackle issues of sexism/racism both in and out of the classroom.

Oral literature transcends from orality to scribality and then textuality due to technological innovation. This paper seeks to evaluate the value of the characteristics of orality as applied by Oliver Kgadime Matsepe in his novel Legitaphiri （Unsolved Problem）（2008）. This will be done by taking into account the significance of self and community in a developing and changing society. It is important to note that all cultures are born from orality. However, the changes that the self and community undergo have a strong impact on the communications models within the community. This is influenced by the self and community, as the writer expresses his/her views by means of language that is based on a particular community.

Transforming the Educational System From Apartheid Education to an Egalitarian Ideal： Challenges Faced by the South African Government

This paper probes the problems of pedagogy within the South African context. The paper is written against the backdrop of the South African educational system that is at the crossroads regarding its adoption of a participatory form of education （i.e., an educational system that is rooted on egalitarian ideals） or a system of education that is more elitist and has little, if any, to do with the uplifting of the historically marginalized. Since the paper is based on a conceptual analysis of theories of non-formal and/or adult education, the praxis of the argument is informed by philosophers who have written extensively on the subject. Solid and educational policies are also compared in order to formulate conclusions and strategies based on the analysis of educational trends that encourage democratic ideals.

Efavirenz is an antiretroviral drug(ARV)used for the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV/AIDS)*** effects efavirenz may have on mammals is known,however,little is known about the effects on non-target aquatic organisms,especially on growth and development of *** Oreochromis mossambicus were bred to produce newly fertilised *** eggs were exposed to efavirenz using two concentrations(10.3 ng/L and 20.6 ng/L)over 60 days growth *** growing juveniles were kept in a static renewal system under controlled laboratory conditions(27±1℃;day:night photoperiod of 14:10)to simulate an optimal growth environment similar to *** endpoints included changes in growth,growth rates and morphological development based on exposure to *** morphological analyses were done at(i)1-day post hatching,(ii)approximately two weeks post hatching,(iii)30 days post hatching and(iv)60 days post hatching abnormalities were *** had no noticeable effect on length and weight,or growth parameters of the juveniles at all *** however,influenced the morphological development of the juveniles by causing physical abnormalities(p>0.05).Abnormalities included spinal deformities and alterations to the shape of the jaws.
