In the Arctic,environment and health are linked in myriad ways.A key emphasis has been on numerous long-lived contaminants in traditional foods,particularly marine mammals,and their well-documented impacts on human,animal and environmental health(“One health approach”).More recent concerns for Indigenous communities focus on the(side)effects of the switch to a modern,processed diet,which is accompanied by a loss of tradition and emerging health ***,the availability of traditional foods is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change,which also causes the emergence and spread of new and old diseases,such as *** change,including thawing permafrost and new forest fire regimes,threatens the built environment and *** particular,well-built,planned,and healthy housing is urgently needed,given that much time is spent *** care,particularly for remote and Indigenous communities,is sparse,and often ignores traditional knowledge and local *** communities in the Arctic continue to suffer from marginalization,resource colonization/extraction,and the impacts of *** examples of the green energy transition,such as in Norway,continue a pattern of ignoring Indigenous rights and ***,the connection between environment and health in the Arctic is multifaceted and complex,and investigations and solutions ought to embrace an interdisciplinary and holistic approach toward improving Environmental and Human Health in the region.

Fundamental modeling issues on benchmark structure for structural health monitoring

The IASC-ASCE Structural Health Monitoring Task Group developed a series of benchmark problems, and participants of the benchmark study were charged with using a 12-degree-of-freedom (DOF) shear building as their identification model. The present article addresses improperness, including the parameter and modeling errors, of using this particular model for the intended purpose of damage detec- tion, while the measurements of damaged structures are synthesized from a full-order finite-element model. In addressing parameter errors, a model calibration procedure is utilized to tune the mass and stiffness matrices of the baseline identification model, and a 12-DOF shear building model that preserves the first three modes of the full-order model is obtained. Sequentially, this calibrated model is employed as the baseline model while performing the damage detection under various damage scenarios. Numerical results indicate that the 12-DOF shear building model is an over-simplified identification model, through which only idealized damage situations for the benchmark structure can be detected. It is suggested that a more sophisticated 3-dimensional frame structure model should be adopted as the identification model, if one intends to detect local member damages correctly.

Refinement of reduced-models for dynamic systems

A refinement procedure for the reduced models of structural dynamic systems is presented in this article. The refinement procedure is to "tune"the parameters of a reduced model, which could be obtained from any traditional model reduction scheme, into an improved reduced model. Upon the completion of the refinement, the improved reduced model matches the dynamic characteristics-the chosen structural frequencies and their mode shapes-of the full order model. Mathematically, the procedure to implement the model refinement technique is an application of the recently developed cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) method for model updating. A numerical example of reducing a 5-DOF (degree-of-freedom) classical mass-spring (or shear-building) model into a 3-DOF generalized mass-spring model is demonstrated in this article.

Multiple-Step Predictive Control for Offshore Structures

Ocean wave propagation is slow, visible and measurable, so a wave theory can be used to approximately predict the imminnent wave force on an offshore structure based on measured, real-time wave elevation near the structure. This predictability suggests the development of a more efficient algorithm, than those that have been developed for structures under wind and seismic loads, for the active vibration control of offshore structures. The present study delveops a mutiple-step predictive optimal control (MPOC) algorithm that accounts for multiple step external loading in the determination of optimal control forces. The control efficiency of the newly developed MPOC algorithm has been Investigated under both regular (single-frequency) and irregular (multiple-frequency) wave loads, and compared with that of two other well-known optimal control algorithms: classical linear optimal control(CLOC) and instantaneous optimal control(IOC).

Study of chemical forms of phosphorus and their bioavailability in the sediments

Chemical forms of phosphorus in the sediments of the Daya Bay, the Zhujiang River estuary , and the Xiamen Bay are measured with extraction solutions of MgCl2, NaOH, and HC1. Their availabilities to Chlorella sp. and Isochrysis galbana are estimated by using sediments as the sole source of P in the bioassays. The results show that the contents of total phosphorus (TP) in these sediments are 449.3, 650.1 and 643.9 mg/kg, respectively. The contents of non-apatite inorganic P (NAIP) extracted with MgCl2 and NaOH from 3 sediments are 168.8, 146.6 and 118.1 mg/kg, respectively, and account for 18.3% -32.6% of TP. The phosphorus extracted with HC1 solution is greater than that extracted with NaOH solution and the lowest extracted P is MgCl2-extractable P. The greatest relative growth rates of Chlorella sp. and Isochrysis galbana cultured with sediments are in the range of 4.3% -26.9%. The increasing biomasses of these algae correspond to NAIP and AAPP (the estimated algal-available particulate P). AAPP accounts for 42.4% -78.2% of NAIP, 21.1 % - 27.1% of total inorganic P, and 11.8% - 20.3% of TP, respectively.

Are trends in SeaWiFS chlorophyll time-series unusual relative to historic variability

For selected locations in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, we compared surface ocean chlorophyll time series extracted from SeaWiFS imagery from 1997-2004 with the results of an ocean coupled circulation and biogeochemical model covering the period 1958-2004. During the 1997-2004 time period, linear trends in model and satellite time series were significantly correlated at most of the 44 sites we studied. Eleven sites were selected for further study, and we used the longer time series of the model to assess whether trends observed during the SeaWiFS period at these 11 sites were unusual in relation to those observed over the longer historical period covered by the model. The results show that the trends observed during the SeaWiFS period were not unusual and fell well within the range in magnitude of linear trends observed in other 8-year periods of model output. This result implies that the SeaWiFS satellite ocean color time series is not yet sufficiently long, on its own, to directly observe any long term changes in phytoplankton chlorophyll that may be occurring in the surface waters of the open ocean as a result of increased ocean stratification linked to global climate changed.

A Novel Approach for Evaluating Nonstationary Response of Dynamic Systems to Stochastic Excitation

The transient state of a dynamic system,such as offshore structures,to random excitation is always *** studies have contributed to evaluating response covariances at the transient state of a linear multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF)system to random excitations,but a closed-form solution was not available unless the excitation was assumed to be a physically unrealizable white noise *** study derives explicit,closed-form solutions for the response covariances at the transient state by using a pole-residue(PR)approach operated in the Laplace domain when the excitations are assumed to be stationary random processes described by physically realizable spectral density *** using the PR method,we can analytically solve the triple integral in evaluating the nonstationary response *** this approach uses the poles and residues of system transfer functions,rather than the conventional mode superposition technique,the method is applicable to MDOF systems with non-classical damping *** application of the proposed method is demonstrated for multi-story shear buildings to stochastic ground acceleration characterized by the Kanai–Tajimi spectral density function model,and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the detailed *** numerical integrations are required for computing the response covariances as the exact closed-form solution has been *** correctness of the proposed method is numerically verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

青藏高原北部新生代钾火山分布表现为西部的广泛分布和东部的几近缺失,两者约以东经93度为界。前人的地震层析成像研究显示,东经93度以西在新生代发生过印度和青藏岩石圈地幔的大面积拆沉,推测是幔源钾火山岩产生的一个深部机制。但东部幔源钾火山岩几近缺失与相较西部更高的印度板块俯冲速度之间存在不一致之处。提出全波形Pn波成像方法,利用Pn波波形特征构建三维高分辨率岩石圈地幔速度模型。基于青藏高原及周边地区的全波形背景噪声成像模型,利用地震数据对模型验证了该模型的精确性和稳健性,在此基础上结合接收函数结果建立了包含高精度莫霍面深度信息的初始模型。

THE RELATIONSHIP OF CURRENT FLUCTUATIONS ON THE SOUTHEAST UNITED STATES SHELF TO FLUCTUATIONS OF THE WIND AND GULF STREAM AND THE EAST CHINA SEA ANALOG

Sub -tidal （1.04-25 day） current fluctuations during winter/spring on the continental shelf off Savannah, Georgia （32°N） and off St. Augustine, Florida （30 °N） were compared with records of local wind stress components and Gulf Stream position. （Acoustic travel time and bottom pressure measurements at stations on the continental slope were combined to determine main thermocline depth, as an indicator of Gulf Stream displacement）. Relative wind influences increased towards the coast. Gulf Stream influence increased towards the shelf-break and towards the surface. Off Savannah, the Gulf Stream influence was predominately at 12 day period and was negligible at the 45 m isobath. Off St. Augustine, its influence was predominately at 4 day period and was appreciable at the 40 m isobath （but negligeable at the 28 m isobath）.
