3-D Modelling of the Confederation Bridge Using Data of Full Scale Tests

Long-span bridges are special structures that require advanced analysis techniques to examine their performance. This paper presents a procedure developed to model the Confederation Bridge using 3-D beam elements. The model was validated using the data collected before the opening of the bridge to the public. The bridge was instrumented to conduct fullscale static and dynamic tests. The static tests were to measure the deflection of the bridge pier while the dynamic tests to measure the free vibrations of the pier due to a sudden release of the static load. Confederation Bridge is one of the longest reinforced concrete bridges in the world. It connects the province of Prince Edward Island and the province of new brunswick in Canada. Due to its strategic location and vital role as a transportation link between these two provinces, it was designed using higher safety factors than those for typical highway bridges. After validating the present numerical model, a procedure was developed to evaluate the performance of similar bridges subjected to traffic and seismic loads. It is of interest to note that the foundation stiffness and the modulus of elasticity of the concrete have significant effects on the structural responses of the Confederation Bridge.

＜正＞ This paper discusses the results of an interlaboratory study on the Accelerated Concrete Prism Test （i.e. 60℃, R.H. ＞ 95%） for ASR. Concrete mixtures were made in one laboratory with moderately- and highly-reactive Canadian aggregates. Test prisms were prepared and further tested for weight changes and expansion in the participant’s laboratories both in the standard （38℃） and the accelerated （60℃） test conditions. The results obtained in this study and in the literature indicate that the variability in the expansion results obtained in the accelerated concrete prism test is quite comparable to that of the standard CPT performed at 38℃. A review of available test results shows that a limit of 0.04% at three months generally give the same diagnostic as that obtained after one year in the standard CPT. Increased leaching of alkalis from the test prisms and an increased sulfate content in the pore solution （with consequent reduction of pH） with increasing testing temperature, likely explain why, in most cases, the main expansion phase of the test prisms at 60℃is often completed after 3 months of testing.

臭虫(温带臭虫和热带臭虫)以吸食人和动物的血液为生,严重影响人们的生活和健康。第二次世界大战后,随着化学药剂的应用,臭虫在世界多数地区逐渐销声匿迹。然而,从20世纪90年代后期开始,臭虫在世界范围内(除南极洲)出现了再暴发。由于其善于躲藏和夜间活动的特点,以及日益严重的抗药性问题,使得臭虫成为当前一种最难防治的城市害虫。2017-2019年在对广东省部分地区进行的臭虫危害及防治调查中,发现该虫的危害程度正日益加重,且防治过程中存在诸多不足。因此,如何有效地控制/抑制臭虫的再暴发,并采取合理的防治措施成为当前亟待解决的问题。该文在分析有关臭虫防治研究文献的基础上,针对当前我国臭虫防治工作中存在的问题提出相应的解决对策,以期为我国臭虫防治策略的制定提供参考。

Predicting Hourly Stream Temperatures Using the Equilibrium Temperature Model

Water temperature is a key physical habitat determinant in lotic ecosystems as it influences many physical, chemical and biological properties of rivers. Hence, a good understanding of the thermal regime of rivers is essential for effective management of water and fisheries resources. This study deals with the modeling of hourly stream water temperature using the equilibrium temperature model. This water temperature model was applied on two thermally different watercourses, namely, the Little Southwest Miramichi River (LSWM) and Catamaran Brook (CatBk;new brunswick). The equilibrium temperature model is a simplified version of a deterministic model. As such, in the equilibrium temperature model the total heat flux at the surface is assumed proportional to the difference between the water temperature and an equilibrium temperature. In the present study, the equilibrium temperature was assumed to vary linearly with hourly air temperature. This study showed that there was a good relationship between the equilibrium and air temperature at the hourly time scale. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) obtained with the hourly equilibrium temperature model was similar to results reported in previous studies with values of 1.05°C (CatBk) and 1.36°C (LSWM). The model’s performance was best in late summer and autumn when water levels were low. In contrast, the presence of snowmelt in the spring resulted in poorer performances. This study also showed good results in estimating the daily mean (Tmean) and maximum (Tmax) water temperatures from the predicted hourly water temperatures, which were often required in fishery management.

The port railway operation in Germany and Europe is not least due to its long history of technological and regulatory developments characterized by a high number of players and a lack of comprehensive planning and optimization of all relevant processes.Innovative technologies and business processes are therefore useful and needed to achieve key steps on the way to an overall optimization of rail transport within global supply chains.A substantial part of the European rail freight transport has its origin or its destination in an inland or sea port.Considering the railway system,ports play a more important role for urgently needed innovations than the pure interfaces between sea and land transport.Especially ports with their own railway system have an own responsibility in this matter.Insofar the goal of the Bremen Port Railway—which already now has a leading share of railway in modal split in Europe—is to exploit the opportunities offered by digitalization.Significant steps for this are the optimization and gradually automatization of rail operational processes on the last mile including modern and transparent IT systems and the designing of autonomous shunting processes.Together with research partners ISL(Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics Bremen),BIBA(Bremen Institute for Production and Logistics)and IVE(Institute for Transport,Railway Construction and Operation in brunswick)and in connection with associated business partners the project Rang-E has been applied for at the Ministry of Transport in the funding initiative IHATEC(Innovated HArbour TEChnologies)—and had won a grant to perform the proposed work.Basic thoughts are outlined in the following.
