Reuse of port industrial heritage in tourist cities:Shipyards as case studies

The progressive deindustrialisation of many western cities since the 1980s has led to many industrial zones linked to port activities being abandoned or falling into disuse.Cities such as Barcelona,Naples,Lisbon,Amsterdam,and Hamburg have port industrial complexes of high tangible and intangible heritage value that could totally or partially disappear,resulting in an irreparable loss of their scientific,architectural,social,technological,and historical values.With that in mind,Adaptive Reuse(AR)of the built heritage allows the industrial memory of the ports to be preserved by turning them into new functional centres within the existing urban structure.That occurs in the context of the contemporary challenges of those cities,such as touristification,the circular economy and climate change,while guaranteeing the life cycle of those buildings.This article analyses two case studies—the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij(NDSM)and the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij(RDM)shipyards,both in the Netherlands—in order to contribute to the knowledge of AR of Port Industrial Heritage.They are two examples of good practices in port industrial heritage interventions,where the factors behind their acclaim can be easily highlighted.A multi-scale methodology is therefore used and tailored to the case of port industrial heritage,based on analysing previous studies of the heritage in different spheres and on different scales.A relationship matrix tool is thus defined.It enables a comparative study to be conducted,using key variables and indicators,and considering qualitative and quantitative data.That provides extensive output information for each case study,which is summarised in the most favourable factors for the success of the AR of this port industrial heritage.

New therapeutic strategy with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory hepatopulmonary syndrome after liver transplant: A case report

BACKGROUND Due to the lack of published literature about treatment of refractory hepatopulmonary syndrome(HPS)after liver transplant(LT),this case adds information and experience on this issue along with a treatment with positive outcomes.HPS is a complication of end-stage liver disease,with a 10%-30%incidence in cirrhotic patients.LT can reverse the physiopathology of this process and restore normal oxygenation.However,in some cases,refractory hypoxemia persists,and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO)can be used as a rescue therapy with good results.CASE SUMMARY A 59-year-old patient with alcohol-related liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension was included in the LT waiting list for HPS.He had good liver function(Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score 12,Child-Pugh class B7).He had pulmonary fibrosis and a mild restrictive respiratory pattern with a basal oxygen saturation of 82%.The macroaggregated albumin test result was>30.Spirometry demonstrated a forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1)of 78%,forced vital capacity(FVC)of 74%,FEV1/FVC ratio of 81%,diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide of 42%,and carbon monoxide transfer coefficient of 57%.He required domiciliary oxygen at 2 L/min(16 h/d).The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)and extubated in the first 24 h,needing high-flow therapy and non-invasive ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide afterwards.Reintubation was needed after 72 h.Due to the non-response to supportive therapies,installation of ECMO was decided with progressive recovery after 9 d.Extubation was possible on the tenth day,maintaining a high-flow nasal cannula and de-escalating to conventional oxygen therapy after 48 h.He was discharged from ICU on postoperative day(POD)20 with a 90%-92%oxygen saturation.Steroid recycling was needed twice for acute rejection.The patient was discharged from hospital on POD 27 with no symptoms,with an 89%-90%oxygen saturation.CONCLUSION Due to the favorable results observed,ECMO could become the central axis of treatment of HPS and ref

Memory deficit,which is often associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue for treatment.Up till now,all potential drug candidates have failed to produce satisfa ctory effects.Therefore,in the search for a solution,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial for object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of ORM.In this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of ORM in young animals and prevent ORM deficits in rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.Furthermore,we found that the prevention of memory deficits was mediated through the upregulation of neuronal arbo rization and spine density,as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).A knockdown of BDNF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of neuronal structural plasticity and in the prevention of ORM deficits.These findings suggest that BDNF-mediated neuronal structural plasticity in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of memory deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.Therefore,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of memory deficits.

Background The development of a sustainable business model with social acceptance,makes necessary to develop new strategies to guarantee the growth,health,and well-being of farmed animals.Debaryomyces hansenii is a yeast species that can be used as a probiotic in aquaculture due to its capacity to i)promote cell proliferation and differen-tiation,ii)have immunostimulatory effects,iii)modulate gut microbiota,and/or iv)enhance the digestive function.To provide inside into the effects of D.hansenii on juveniles of gilthead seabream(Sparus aurata)condition,we inte-grated the evaluation of the main key performance indicators coupled with the integrative analysis of the intestine condition,through histological and microbiota state,and its transcriptomic profiling.Results After 70 days of a nutritional trial in which a diet with low levels of fishmeal(7%)was supplemented with 1.1%of D.hansenii(17.2×10^(5) CFU),an increase of ca.12%in somatic growth was observed together with an improve-ment in feed conversion in fish fed a yeast-supplemented diet.In terms of intestinal condition,this probiotic modu-lated gut microbiota without affecting the intestine cell organization,whereas an increase in the staining intensity of mucins rich in carboxylated and weakly sulphated glycoconjugates coupled with changes in the affinity for certain lectins were noted in goblet cells.Changes in microbiota were characterized by the reduction in abundance of several groups of Proteobacteria,especially those characterized as opportunistic groups.The microarrays-based transcrip-tomic analysis found 232 differential expressed genes in the anterior-mid intestine of S.aurata,that were mostly related to metabolic,antioxidant,immune,and symbiotic processes.Conclusions Dietary administration of D.hansenii enhanced somatic growth and improved feed efficiency param-eters,results that were coupled to an improvement of intestinal condition as histochemical and transcriptomic tools indicated.This probiotic yeast stimulated host-microbiota interactions with

This article is an attempt for a systematic analysis of the metaphorical extensions from both Spanish and Chinese lexicon of water animals. The authors have selected the Spanish lexicon of water animals that have metaphorical meanings and set up a small database. The data has indicated that the majority of Spanish water animals have metaphorical extensions in meaning; meanwhile the meanings are extended mainly into the target domain of HUMAN, expressing complimentary meanings. The authors compare the Spanish zoosemy with that of Chinese. On the contrary, it is found that the majority of Chinese equavalences do not have extensions. thorsproposetoexplainthefindingsfromaculturalperspective.

BACKGROUND Neuropsychiatric symptoms(NPS)have been insufficiently examined in persons with aphasia(PWA)because most previous studies exclude participants with language and communication disorders.AIM To report a two-part study consisting of a literature review and an observational study on NPS in post-stroke aphasia.METHODS Study 1 reviewed articles obtained from PubMed,PsycINFO,Google Scholar and Cochrane databases after cross-referencing key words of post-stroke aphasia to NPS and disorders.Study 2 examined language deficits and activities of daily living in 20 PWA(median age:58,range:28-65 years;13 men)with the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised and the Barthel Index,respectively.Informants of these 20 PWA were proxy-evaluated with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and domain-specific scales,including the Stroke Aphasia Depression Questionnaire-10 item version and the Starkstein Apathy Scale.In addition,an adapted version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was directly administered to the PWA themselves.This observational study is based on the baseline assessment of an intervention clinical trial(EudraCT:2017-002858-36;ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT04134416).RESULTS The literature review revealed a broad spectrum of NPS in PWA,including depression,anxiety,apathy,agitation/aggression,eating and sleep disorders,psychosis,and hypomania/mania.These findings alert to the need for improving assessment and treatment approaches of NPS taking into consideration their frequent occurrence in PWA.Study 2 showed that the 20 participants had mild-to-moderate aphasia severity and were functionally independent.A wide range of comorbid NPS was found in the post-stroke aphasic population(median number of NPS:5,range:1-8).The majority of PWA(75%)had depressive symptoms,followed by agitation/aggression(70%),irritability(70%),anxiety(65%)and appetite/eating symptoms(65%).Half of them also presented symptoms of apathy,whereas euphoria and psychotic symptoms were rare(5%).Domain-specific scales revealed that 45%of participant

Intact memory function is critical for carrying out daily life activities,such as managing finances,remembering to take medications,driving in familiar environments,remembering a grandchild’s birthday,and learning to use a new computer.However,memory deficits not only accompany normal aging but are also comorbid with many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases.Intellectual disability,autism,attention deficit disorder,learning disability,schizophrenia,and depression all have memory deficit components,as do Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,and other neurodegenerative diseases(Khan et al.,2014).Therefore,a large proportion of the human population is affected by this brain disorder.

Maintaining flexibility in smart grid consumption through deep learning and deep reinforcement learning

The smart grid concept is key to the energy revolution that has been taking place in recent years.Smart Grids have been present in energy research since their emergence.However,the scarcity of data from different energy sources,hardware power,or co-simulation environments has hindered their development.With advances in multi-agent-based systems,the possibility of simulating the behavior of different energy sources,combining real building consumption,and simulated data,storage batteries and vehicle charging points,has opened up.This development has resulted in much research published using both simulated and physical data.All these investigations show that the main problem is that the machine learning algorithms do not fully match the real behavior,it is complex to use them to replicate the different actions to be performed.This paper aims to combine the approach of behavior prediction with state-of-the-art techniques,such as deep learning and deep reinforcement learning,to simulate unknown or critical system scenarios.A very important element in smart grids is the possibility of maintaining consumption within specific ranges(flexibility).For this purpose,we have made use of Tensorflow libraries that predict energy consumption and deep reinforcement learning to select the optimal actions to be performed in our system.The developed platform is flexible enough to include new technologies such as smart batteries,electric vehicles,etc.,and it is oriented to real-time operation,being applied in an on-going real project such as the European ebalance-plus project.

Contact problem for regular hexagon weakened with full-strength hole

A problem of the plane elasticity theory is addressed for a doubly connected body with an external boundary of the regular hexagon shape and with a 6-fold symmetric hole at the center. It is assumed that all the six sides of the hexagon are subjected to uniform normal displacements via smooth rigid stamps, while the uniformly distributed normal stress is applied to the internal hole boundary. Using the methods of complex analysis, the analytical image of Kolosov-Muskhelishvili＇s complex potentials and the shape of the hole contour are determined from the condition that the circumferential normal stress is constant along the hole contour. Numerical results are given and shown in relevant graphs.
