A vectorial optical field generator(VOF-Gen) based on two reflective phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulators enables the creation of an arbitrary optical complex field. In this work, the capabilities of the VOF-Gen in terms of manipulating the spatial distributions of phase, amplitude, and polarization are experimentally demonstrated by generating a radially polarized optical field consisted of five annular rings, the focusing properties of which are also numerically studied with vectorial diffraction theory. By carefully adjusting the relative amplitude and phase between the adjacent rings, an optical needle field with purely longitudinal polarization can be produced in the focal region of a high numerical aperture lens. The versatile method presented in this work can be easily extended to the generation of a vectorial optical field with any desired complex distributions.

Simulators play an important role in training surgery residents to perform laparoscopy surgery. Some of these simulators have the capability to track tool motion to assess performance. However, most have not utilized the data to analyze trainee performance in a meaningful way. The alpha shape method can be used to construct a geometric surface based on motion data to enable visualization of the performance, while the surface derivative (surface/time to completion)—efficiency—can be used as a metric to evaluate complex surgical performance. The utility of the alpha shape method was demonstrated in a pick-and-place task, where the motion path of laparoscopic graspers was recorded by a position sensor, miniBIRD 500?. An alpha shape method was used to measure the surface area of the 3D points in space occupied by the tool tips during task performance. Results show that the surface derivative measure alone may be able to model the speed-accuracy tradeoff function, thereby simplifying the analysis and evaluation of complex motion in surgical performance.

Human beings have continually been exposed to radiation from sources that are terrestrial. There are different sources of radiation for instance ubiquitous background and medical exams that require X-rays. In America for example, the rate of radiation intake per individual increased from 1.6 to 6.2 mSv. The increase has been associated with increased imaging procedures in healthcare facilities. The continued exposure of people to radiant’s increases their rates of developing cardiovascular related diseases. A person who is exposed to low amounts of radiation over a long duration may in the long run develop heart diseases. The result has been obtained from an experiment with the Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb. This research paper focuses on the different sources of radiations and the risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases. The paper also explains the possible relationship between radiations and cardiovascular diseases.

Activated Carbon and Clay Minerals for the Sorptive Removal of Denatonium Ions from Denatonium Benzoate Solutions

This study assessed the feasibility of utilizing activated carbon and clay minerals for treating water impacted with the bittering agent denatonium benzoate (DB). Our specific study objectives were to 1) evaluate denatonium ion sorption to smectite clay minerals (bentonite and hectorite) and activated carbon (powdered and granular) at constant pH and ionic strength and 2) examine the impact of pH on denatonium ion sorption to each solid material. The experimental results indicated that high doses (33,000 mg/L) of as-received granular activated carbon and as-received clay minerals completely removed denatonium from aqueous solutions containing 100 - 1000 mg/L denatonium benzoate. Powdered activated carbon at doses of 5 - 100 mg/L exhibited favorable monolayer sorption of denatonium ions from a pH 6.95, 70 mg/L aqueous denatonium benzoate solution with a Langmuir separation factor (r) of 0.481, a maximum sorption capacity (Sm) of 74 mg/g, and a Langmuir constant of 15.3 L/g. A maximum removal of 23% of denatonium was achieved at the highest powdered activated carbon dosage employed. Denatonium ion removal with peroxide treated bentonite and peroxide treated hectorite did not result in complete removal of the ion and exhibited favorable sorption as evidenced by Freundlich 1/n values ranging from 0.803 to 1.194;Freundlich constants (Kf) ranged from 8 ng/L to 575 ng/L. Denatonium ion sorption to peroxide treated bentonite appeared to depend on pH while hectorite sorption of denatonium ions was independent of hydrogen ion concentrations. For powdered activated carbon adsorption, as pH increased denatonium ion sorption decreased. Overall, the work demonstrates that denatonium can be effectively removed from water via activated carbon or clay mineral sorption.

Second-order stochastic dominance plays an important role in reliability and various branches of economics such as finance and decision-making under risk, and statistical testing for the stochastic dominance is often useful in practice. In this paper, we present a test of stochastic equality under the constraint of second-order stochastic dominance based on the theory of empirical processes. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is obtained, and a simple method to compute the critical value is derived. Simulation results and real data examples are presented to illustrate the proposed test method.

Objective:To study the hemodynamics of an anatomic internal carotid artery aneurysm derived from a patient-specific model and then manipulate into two phantom morphologies:one growing uniformly by size and the other changing shape ***:The computational model of the saccular,internal carotid artery,aneurysm was constructed from 3D rotational,digitally subtracted,catheter angiography *** fluid dynamics simulations were performed under pulsatile cardiac flow *** vectors,streamlines,pressure,and wall shear stress(WSS)and its variance distributions were quantitatively ***:The maximum pressure and WSS from the time-averaged distribution on the inside saccular surface of the original case are 415.38 and 17.61 *** contrast,the bi-lobed shape gives rise to higher peak values of pressure(461.00 Pa)and WSS(33.20 Pa)on the saccular ***,the evenly enlarged aneurysm actually results in a slightly lower peak pressure(399.58 Pa)and drastically decreased WSS(9.81 Pa).Conclusions:The current study indicates that the size of the aneurysm should not be the only determining factor for the rupture risk consideration,the irregularity of the aneurysm shape and the corresponding aberrant hemodynamics might be a more important factor to consider for risk assessment.

Edge plane pyrolytic graphite (EPG) electrodes coated with the Co(II)/Pt(II)2 analog of 5,15-bis-(4-pyridyl)-10,20-bis-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin undergo an electrochemical-chemical-electrochemical (ECE) reaction when anodically scanned in 1.0 M sulfuric acid. The new redox couple formed from this anodic conditioning of the coated electrode is dependent on the pH of the solution. Roughened EPG electrodes coated with the Co(II)/Pt(II)2 trimetallic porphyrin show a catalytic shift of 400 mV for the reduction of O2 when compared to the reduction of O2 at a bare EPG electrode. An additional catalytic shift of ca. 150 mV is observed for O2 reduction at an EPG electrode coated with the Co(II)/Pt(II)2 porphyrin which has been oxidized in 1.0 M sulfuric acid. In addition to the added electrocatalysis, a significant percentage of O2 reduced at the oxidized Co(II)/Pt(II)2 EPG electrode is converted to H2O as determined by rotating disk electrode measurements.
