Objective:This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis B antigen among newly employed staff in a Tertiary Hospital in South-South ***:The medical records of a total of 238 newly employed members of staff of the university of calabar Teaching Hospital between 2000 and 2006 were *** socio-demographic data and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen(HBSAg) results were ***:The overall prevalence of Hepatitis B Surface Antiginaemia was found to be 5.04%.The prevalence was 7.30%in males and statistically significant compared to 3.50%in ***:There is a reasonably high prevalence of HBSAg among adults prior to employment into Health Care *** poses a danger to clients seeking care in these health care facilities and other health care *** Institutions must have clear policies on engagement of new staff relating to such communicable diseases based on existing Nigerian labour laws including the Workman Compensation *** must also implement policies on universal precautions to safeguard the health workers and clients in their *** enlightenment on the National Program on Immunization(NPI) must be intensified as a strategy to reduce the prevalence of HBSAg and its attendant consequences.

Objective:To ascertain the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) recovered from surgical site infections(SSIs).Methods:The study was retrospective in nature and was compiled for a period of five years(1st February,2004-31st January,2009).Data were generated from the culture of post-operative wound swab specimens by the microbiology laboratory of university of calabar Teaching Hospital,Relevant information from the patients’ records was compiled,such as age,gender,type of surgical procedure,microorganisms recovered and their antibiotic sensitivity *** data was analysed by using Epi Info 6 statistical ***:Of the 4 533 wound swab specimens processed,673 were culture positive and P. aeruginosa was recovered from 13.1%of the culture positive specimens with its rate of recovery decreasing with age progression(P0.05).Most of the P. aeruginosa isolates were from general surgery wards and least from orthopaedic ***, ceftriaxone and augmentin were the most active antibiotics while ampicillin,tetracycline and cotrimoxazole were the least active antibiotics,with no antibiotic having a 100%activity against the ***:In view of the high resistance displayed by *** recovered from SSIs,adequate antiseptic procedures should be entrenched to avoid colonization of surgical wounds by this microorganism as well as others with similar sensitivity ***, ceftriaxone and augmentin may be considered for prevention of *** infection.

Background: Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) promotes timely information and utilization of skilled health attendance/services to pregnant women to prevent complications due to 3 delays that lead to maternal deaths. Objective: To determine nurses’ role in birth preparedness and complication readiness among pregnant women in university of calabar Teaching Hospital calabar. Methods: This study adopted a survey research design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 80 participants working in antenatal clinic, antenatal ward, gynecological ward, labour ward, postnatal ward, and Family planning unit. Data were collected using self-administered structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage and Pearson Moment Product Correlation Coefficient statistical methods of data analysis. Results: Findings of the study revealed that 53 (66.3%) of the respondents acknowledged nurse/midwives responsibility for the health education of mothers on dangers of pregnancy while 42 (52.5%) strongly agreed that nurses/midwives carry out discussion on plan for delivery with mothers. The study hypothesized that there is no significant relationship between the role of nurse/midwives and the practice of BPCR among pregnant women. The correlational analysis result that there is no revealed (r-cal = 0.67, r-crit = 0.58, df = 79, P > 0.05) thus rejecting the hypothesis statement as r-calculated was greater than r-critical. This implies that the role of nurse/midwives have very strong positive relationship with the practice of BPCR among pregnant women. Conclusion: Positive pregnancy outcome depends on nurse/midwives independent and interdependent roles to prevent delays, emergencies, have access to skilled care.

This study focused on the influence of base metal mining on heavy metal levels in soils and plants in the vicinity of Arufu lead-zinc mine, Nigeria. Soil samples (0-15 cm depth) and plant samples were collected from cul-tivated farmlands in and around the mine, the unmineralized site and a nearby forest (the control site). The samples were analyzed for heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd) by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The physical properties of soils (pH and LOI) were also measured. Results showed that soils from cultivated farm-lands have neutral pH values (6.5-7.5), and low organic matter contents (cassava tubers>peelings. In the same plant species, metal levels decreased in the order of Zn>Fe>Mn>Cu>Pb>Cr>Cd. Most heavy metals were found in plant parts at average concentrations normally observed in plants grown in uncontaminated soil, however, elevated concentrations of Pb and Cd were found in a few cassava samples close to the mine dump. A stepwise linear regression analysis identified soil metal contents, pH and LOI as some of the factors influencing soil-plant metal uptake.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater in parts of the lower Benue Through in Nigeria as well as to evaluate the variation in groundwater chemistry data and the suitability of the groundwater for drinking and other domestic *** was based on chemical analyses of 44 water samples from existing wells and boreholes in the study *** the statistical analysis(wide ranges,median and standard deviation),it is obvious that there are significant variations in the quality/composition of groundwater in the period of *** calculated SAR,Na% and RSC values indicated that the water is of excellent to good quality and is suitable for *** and HCO3 are dominant with respect to the chemical composition of the *** the basis of water chemistry,hydrochemical indices and factor analysis the dominant controls or processes affecting the distribution of geochemical variables in the study area have been shown to be water/rock interaction which is mainly controlled by carbonate and silicate dissolution as well as anthropogenic influence to a lesser *** processes include cation exchange reactions and reverse ion exchange to a minor extent.

Crossover of large to small radius polaron in ionic crystals

The crossover of large to small radius polaron is studied in terms of the inverse-relaxation time and *** is found that the small radius polaron exists at higher temperature than the large radius polaron.A formula which relates the inverse-relaxation time to the ratio of arbitrary temperature and Debye temperature of the crystal is *** polaron crossover temperatures in NaCl and KBr are found from plotted *** straight line emerging at the Debye temperature T_d of a graph reflects the increase of the inverse relaxation time for increasing temperature up to the collapse of the small radius *** relationship between the small and large radius polarons is found and known ratios of the effective and the bare masses of the electrons for the two substances are used to validate our *** small radius polaron＇s mass is later compared with the mass obtained from the hopping formula and is found to be approximately ***,we point out that the crossover temperature is material-specific since it depends on the Debye and the effective dielectric function.

This paper develops a new approach to domain estimation and proposes a new class of ratio estimators that is more efficient than the regression estimator and not depending on any optimality condition using the principle of calibration *** wellknown regression and ratio-type estimators are obtained and shown to be special members of the newclass of *** of analytical study showed that the new class of estimators is superior in both efficiency and biasedness to all related existing estimators under *** relative performances of the new class of estimators with a corresponding global estimator were evaluated through a simulation *** and evaluation are presented.
