Using multivariate adaptive regression splines to develop relationship between rock quality designation and permeability

The assessment of in situ permeability of rock mass is challenging for large-scale projects such as reservoirs created by dams,where water tightness issues are of prime *** in situ permeability is strongly related to the frequency and distribution of discontinuities in the rock mass and quantified by rock quality designation(RQD).This paper analyzes the data of hydraulic conductivity and discontinuities sampled at different depths during the borehole investigations in the limestone and sandstone formations for the construction of hydraulic structures in *** recovered from boreholes provide RQD data,and in situ Lugeon tests elucidate the permeability.A modern technique of multivariate adaptive regression splines(MARS)assisted in correlating permeability and RQD along with the *** situ permeability shows a declining trend with increasing RQD,and the depth of investigation is within 50 *** type of relationship can be developed based on detailed initial investigations at the site where the hydraulic conductivity of discontinuous rocks is required to be *** relationship can approximate the permeability by only measuring the RQD in later investigations on the same site,thus saving the time and cost of the site *** applicability of the relationship developed in this study to another location requires a lithological similarity of the rock mass that can be verified through preliminary investigation at the site.

An analysis for a conceptual design of a thermal power plant (with a power capacity of 1 GW) is provided. This power plant can help in meeting the expected increase in the electric demand for Oman’s dominant power system (2.4 GW between 2018 and 2025). A necessary fluid mass flow rate of 834.1 kg/s was predicted. The overall energy conversion efficiency (output useful electricity divided by input heat) was estimated to be 34.7%. The needed thermal energy is not restricted to a specific source, and solar heating is an option for supplying the needed heat. The power plant design is based on using a steam-turbine section, which may be composed of a single large steam turbine having a mechanical power output of 1115 MW;or composed of a group of smaller steam turbines. The analysis is based on applying energy balance equations under certain assumptions (such as neglecting changes in potential energy). The thermal analysis was aided by web-based tool for calculating needed properties of the working medium, which is water, at different stages in the power plant.

We sought to evaluate central corneal thickness（CCT）,corneal endothelial cell density（ECD）and intraocular pressure（IOP）in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus（DM）and to associate potential differences with diabetes duration and treatment modality in a prospective,randomized *** measured ECD,CCT and IOP of125 patients with type 2 DM（mean age 57.1±11.5 years）and compared them with 90 age-matched *** parameters were analyzed for association with diabetes duration and glucose control modalities（insulin injection or oral medication）while controlling for *** the diabetic group,the mean ECD（2511±252 cells/mm^2）,mean CCT（539.7±33.6μm）and mean IOP（18.3±2.5 mmHg）varied significantly from those the control group[ECD：2713±132 cells/mm^2（P〈0.0001）,CCT：525.0±45.3μm（P=0.003）and IOP：16.7±1.8 mmHg（P〈0.0001）].ECD was significantly reduced by about 32 cell/mm^2 for diabetics with duration of〉10 years when compared with those with duration of〈10 years（P〈0.05）.CCT was thicker and IOP was higher for diabetics with duration of〉10 years than those with duration of〈10 years（P〉0.05）.None of the measured parameters was significantly associated with diabetes duration and treatment modality（P〉0.05）.In conclusion,subjects with type 2DM exhibit significant changes in ECD,IOP and CCT,which,however,are not correlated with disease duration or if the patients receive on insulin injection or oral medications.

In this paper, we consider the giving up smoking model. First, we present the giving up smoking model in fractional order. Then the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is employed to compute an approximate and analytical solution of the model in fractional order. The obtained results are compaired with those obtained by forth order Runge-Kutta method and nonstandard numerical method in the integer case. Finally, we present some numerical results.

In this paper, we presents some new exact solutions corresponding to three unsteady flow problems of a generalized Jeffrey fluid produced by a flat plate between two side walls perpendicular to the plate. The fractional calculus approach is used in the governing equations. The exact solutions are established by means of the Fourier sine transform and N-transform. The series solutions of velocity field and associated shear stress in terms of Fox H-function, satisfying all imposed initial and boundary conditions, have been obtained. The similar solutions for ordinary Jeffrey fluid, performing the same motion, appear as limiting case of the solutions are also obtained. Also, the obtained results are analyzed graphically through various pertinent parameters.

In this paper, we consider a leptospirosis epidemic model to implement optimal campaign by using multiple control variables. First, we show the existence of the control problem. Then we derive the conditions under which it is optimal to eradicate the leptospirosis infection and examine the impact of a possible educatioal/vaccinaction campaign using Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle. We completely characterize the optimal control problem and compute the numerical solution of the optimality system using an iterative method. The results obtained from the numerical simulations of the model show that a possible educational/vaccinaction combined with effective treatment regime would reduce the spread of the leptospirosis infection appreciably.
