Diastasis of the symphysis pubis is a rare postpartum complication. We report two cases of symphysis diastasis after dystocic delivery, in two patients who presented in the postpartum period with functional impotence, pubalgia and acute urine retention. A frontal radiograph of the pelvis confirmed the diagnosis, showing a symphyseal separation of 12 mm and 18 mm. In our case, management was mainly medical, with a favorable clinical outcome.

Background:Gastrointestinal parasites infections are widespread in Africa and their prevalence infections vary from country to country.This study aimed at assessing the prevalence of opportunistic intestinal parasites infection and other gastrointestinal parasites infection among patients attending the laboratory of Parasitology and Mycology of the university Hospital Souro Sanou of bobo-dioulasso.Methods:A hospital cross-sectional based study was conducted from April to August,2012.Participants were persons whom parasitological examination of stools has been prescribed by a clinician.The stools examination methods included direct wet saline examination,lugol’s iodine staining technique,formol-ether concentration and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining.We recorded age and sex information for each patient.Results:The overall prevalence of intestinal parasite infections was 65.3%(190/291).Majority of the parasitic infections was waterborne(64.3%)consisting of high prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp.(26.5%)and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar(23.4%).The prevalence of opportunistic parasites was 28.9%and Cryptosporidium sp.was the most prevalent species followed by Blastocystis sp.(1.0%),Cyclospora sp.(0.7%)and Isospora belli(0.7%).The prevalence of intestinal helminthes was 1.7%.Conclusions:The prevalence of intestinal parasitism in general remains high in bobo-dioulasso requiring the establishment of adequate diagnostic techniques,treatment and prevention.

Background: Despite numerous advances in medicine and clinical care, in developing countries, adult undernutrition is overlooked and not considered as a sufficient medical priority. The objective of this study was to identify the magnitude of adult undernutrition and its associated factors in hospitalized patients. Methods: Cross-sectional study, performed in the university hospital in bobo-dioulasso, from August to September 2016, in a sample of 244 adult individuals. Patients were included in the study consecutively to their admission. A structured questionnaire was applied consisting of anthropometric, clinical and dietary data. The patients were evaluated and dichotomized into undernourished and non-undernourished. The rate of undernutrtion was reported using and associated factors were tested using the unadjusted crude Odds ratios (COR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and the Chi-square test. Results: Undernutrition occurred in 32.4% of the sample and at the univariate analysis, the variables associated with undernutrition were: recent and involuntary weight loss (COR = 2.58, 95% CI = 1.45 - 4.59, p Conclusion: Adult undernutrition is common in hospitalized patients. A proper early diagnosis and therapy need to be considered as medical priority of the entire healthcare team that treats adult’s inpatients.

Background: Generally, urological emergencies are assumed not to be very common, however, recent reports showed that they constitute an important aspect of the day-to-day urological practice. If not well and promptly managed, they may lead to serious morbidity or mortality. Objectives: To study the pattern of presentation, diagnosis and outcome of management of non-traumatic urological emergencies seen at the Emergency Department of Souro Sanou university Hospital in bobo-dioulasso. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive study over four years. It included patients of all ages and both sexes, admitted for non-traumatic urological emergencies in the surgical emergency department of Souro Sanou university Hospital. It took place from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020. Results: A total of 584 patients were reviewed in our study. Non-traumatic urological emergencies account for 6.3% of all surgical emergencies seen during the study period. The male-to-female ratio was 9.2 to 1. The mean age of the patients was 51.9 ± 23.9 years. Forty-five per cent of the patients presented within 48 hours of symptoms. The vast majority of the patients presented with difficulties with passing urine (41.6%), followed by cases of hematuria (18.4%). On admission, 154 patients (26.4%) presented with severe conditions such as anemia as seen in 40.9% of the cases and deterioration in the general health condition as seen in 34.4% of the patients. Leukocytosis was noted in 18.7% of the patients and anemia in 17.9%. Urine culture was positive in 15.4% of the patients and Escherichia coli was the most common pathogen found (40.6%). Ultrasound was the most requested examination (81.2%), followed by a computerized tomography (CT) scan (22%). The most frequent diagnoses were urine retention (42.9%), hematuria (16.9%) and renal colic (10.1%). Introduction: In hyperthyroidism, selective irradiation of the thyroid gland with radioactive iodine is a radical treatment and an alternative to surgery. The aim of this review is to assess the medium-term efficacy of outpatient treatment of hyperthyroidism with iodine-131 in Africa. Methods: We identified the studies carried out in Africa on outpatient radiation therapy between 2016 and 2020. For each article included, we noted the country concerned and the year of publication, the numbers studied, the socio-demographic characteristics of the patients, the indications for radio iodine therapy, the dose administered, the results of the hormonal dosage 6 months after radiation. Results: 13 retrospective studies were included to constitute a total population of 925 patients. The average age was 40.77 years, the sex ratio of 1/5.4 with a clear female predominance. The 3 main etiologies of hyperthyroidism justifying outpatient radio iodine therapy were Graves’ disease (55.89%), toxic multinodular goiter (22.70%) and toxic adenoma (21.40%). The average dose of iodine 131 administered per course is 13.7 mCi. No short-and medium-term complications were reported. The radio iodine therapy was effective in 86.08% (n = 796) of the patients with extremes of 72% and 100%. Conclusion: Radio iodine therapy is effective in Africa. It is simple, inexpensive on an outpatient basis and well tolerated. The introduction of outpatient radio iodine therapy could improve the management of patients with hyperthyroidism in Burkina Faso.

Giant Hydronephrosis (GH) is a rare condition in urology literature and defined as a pelvicalyceal system of kidney containing more of 1000 ml of urine. This condition is not so rare in our setting. We herein, reported two cases of giant hydronephrosis, seen in two young patients respectively with 5 and 9 years old and their collecting system containing 4000 ml and 5000 ml of urines respectively. Only simple nephrectomy was performed for the two cases with renal function impairment and the post operative course was uneventful. Our purpose through these cases reports is to discuss diagnosis features and management of such condition in our setting, a context of low income countries as Burkina-Faso where diagnosis tool and further investigation are not always available.

Background: Infectious Diseases are responsible for nearly 17 million annual deaths worldwide. Burkina Faso, like the majority of poor countries, remains vulnerable to infectious diseases. The objective of the present study was to analyze the profile of inpatients, including the mortality and causes of death, in the Infectious Diseases Department of SourôSanou teaching hospital (bobo-dioulasso, Burkina Faso). Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study based on medical records of all inpatients from 2011 to 2015. Results: We included 1169 patients. The gender ratio was 0.8. The age group 30 to 39 was more represented (30.2%) as well as housewives and farmers (73.7%). Over one-thirds of the patients (35.3%) were consulted within an average of 7 days. The most common reason for consultation was fever (65.1%). Around 62.0% of inpatients were infected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Digestive diseases ranked first (21.8%) followed by nervous system disorders (19.4%) and tuberculosis (17.8%). Overall morbidity rate was 31.3%. About 42% were admitted to the emergency ward while 83.3% already arrived with poor health condition. And 82.1% of deaths occurred on pathological grounds of which 66.7% were related to HIV. Main causes of death included nervous system diseases (28.6%), tuberculosis (21.9%) and gastrointestinal diseases (18.3%). Conclusion: Infectious diseases remain a major public health issue. Further efforts are needed to improve their management in Burkina Faso.

A Rare Etiology of a Life-Threatening Subdural Hematoma: Case Report and Literature Review

Background: Life-threatening subdural hematoma is commonly related to trauma and rarely revealed by neoplasm. Observation: We report a case of a 53-year-old suffering from mild headache and without a history of trauma, was admitted unconscious due to a subdural hematoma on radiological investigations. Beside the left subdural hematoma, there was also alytic lesion of the sphenoid wing and the temporal bone on the same side. An emergent removal of the subdural hematoma and an excision of the bone lesion were performed. Pathological examination diagnosed a cavernous hemangioma of the skull. The postoperative period was uneventful with a dramatic recovery of the patient. Conclusion: A quick worsening of a chronic headache, acute impairment of an uncommon headache deserve prompt investigation and emergent surgical management in case of intracranial hematoma. Any bone and dural abnormalities at the vicinity of a subdural hematoma require total excision with clean border and pathological examination.

Epidemiological, Etiological, Therapeutic and Evolutionary Aspects of Acute Surgical Abdomens Operated at the university Hospital of bobo-dioulasso

Surgical acute abdomens represent a significant proportion of surgical emergencies in terms of frequency, morbidity and mortality. The aim of our study was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of acute surgical abdomens operated in the surgical emergency department of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Souro Sanou (CHUSS). This was a retrospective descriptive study of 426 cases of surgical acute abdomens operated in the CHUSS surgical emergency department from 1 January to 31 December 2015. These 426 cases accounted for 24.14% of the emergency interventions carried out in the CHUSS surgical emergency department. These were 314 (73.7%) men and 112 (26.3%) women with an average age of 30 years. Among the causes, there were 187 (43.9%) cases of acute generalized peritonitis, 71 (16.7%) cases of acute intestinal occlusions, 49 (11.5%) cases of acute appendicitis, 38 (9.4%) cases of strangulated parietal hernias, 16 (3.8%) cases of abdominal contusions, and 15 (3.5%) cases of penetrating wounds of the abdomen. The appendectomy was the most performed gesture with 112 (26.3%) cases. The time to surgery was greater than 48 hours in 29 (6.8%) cases. Complications were observed in 68 (16%) cases with 35 (8.2%) cases of parietal infections, 18 (4.2%) cases of postoperative peritonitis. The death occurred in 37 (8.7%) patients. The average hospital stay was 8.7 days. Improving the prognosis of acute surgical abdomens requires early diagnosis and treatment, as well as better postoperative follow-up.

Background: This study assessed the effect of a nutrition education intervention. This intervention aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers on food safety in the peri-urban areas of bobo-dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of 243 mothers of children under 5 years in the peri-urban of bobo-dioulasso were administered the FAO questionnaire for food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices assessment during two cross-sectional surveys, before and after the intervention, in January and October 2017. The intervention included two components consisting of a theoretical phase (counselling and discussion) and cooking demonstrations implemented for ten months. To account for the before-and-after design of the study, the McNemar’s test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on food safety KAP of mothers of children under 5 years. Results: The mean age of mothers was 29 ± 6.2 years and 50.6% of them were between 20 and 29 years old. One for knowledge (cooking thoroughly with, p-value = 0.0001) and another for attitudes (perceived benefits of reheating leftovers before eating them, p-value = 0.0001), significantly increased after the intervention. In terms of food safety practices, all the indicators (cleaning of dirty surfaces, plates and utensils and storage of perishable foods) significantly increased (all p = 0.0001 Conclusion: This study provided some evidence of an effective nutrition education intervention for improving maternal KAP on food safety for their child’s feeding.
