Role of copper chelating agents: between old applications and new perspectives in neuroscience

The role of copper element has been an increasingly relevant topic in recent years in the fields of human and animal health, for both the study of new drugs and innovative food and feed supplements. This metal plays an important role in the central nervous system, where it is associated with glutamatergic signaling, and it is widely involved in inflammatory processes. Thus, diseases involving copper(Ⅱ) dyshomeostasis often have neurological symptoms, as exemplified by Alzheimer's and other diseases(such as Parkinson's and Wilson's diseases). Moreover, imbalanced copper ion concentrations have also been associated with diabetes and certain types of cancer, including glioma. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive overview of recent results that show the importance of these metal ions in several pathologies, mainly Alzheimer's disease, through the lens of the development and use of copper chelators as research compounds and potential therapeutics if included in multi-target hybrid drugs. Seeing how copper homeostasis is important for the well-being of animals as well as humans, we shortly describe the state of the art regarding the effects of copper and its chelators in agriculture, livestock rearing, and aquaculture, as ingredients for the formulation of feed supplements as well as to prevent the effects of pollution on animal productions.

Over the course of the last few years,the advertisement and marketing of commercial food products in the European market has seen an increasing focus on the beneficial effects of such products for consumer health(Regulation,2006).These so-called"health claims", which can be found on the label of some food products,have become a very important medium,aiming to reach the maximum amount of potential consumers possible,and the delivery of these promises has become a crucial objective for food companies or ***,in most cases,the evidence backing up such claims(and their coveted acknowledgment on the product label) has often been cited as insufficient by institutions such as the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA,Parma,Italy).

To the Editor:The risk of de novo cancer increases by 2 to 7-fold after liver transplantation[1].The most common de novo cancers are both solid(non-melanoma skin cancers,colorectal carcinoma,genito-urinary and head-neck cancer)[2,3]as well as hematologic malignancies,in particular the so-called post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder[4].

Linear and Nonlinear Anderson Localization in a Curved Potential

Disorder induced localization in the presence of nonlinearity and curvature is investigated. The time-resolved three-dimensional expansion of a wave packet in a bent cigar shaped potential with a focusing Kerr-like interaction term and Gaussian disorder is numerically analyzed. A self-consistent analytical theory, in which randomness, nonlinearity and geometry are determined by a single scaling parameter, is reported, and it is shown that curvature enhances localization.

Nowadays,it is clear that adult stem cells,also called as tissue stem cells,play a central role to repair and maintain the tissue in which they reside by their selfrenewal ability and capacity of differentiating into distinct and specialized *** stem cells age,their renewal ability declines and their capacity to maintain organ homeostasis and regeneration is *** a molecular perspective,these changes in stem cells properties can be due to several types of cell intrinsic injury and DNA aberrant alteration(i.e epigenomic profile)as well as changes in the tissue microenviroment,both into the niche and by systemic circulating ***,it has been suggested that aging-induced deterioration of stem cell functions may play a key role in the pathophysiology of the various agingassociated ***,understanding how resident stem cell age and affects near and distant tissues is ***,we examine the current knowledge about aging mechanisms in several kinds of adult stem cells under physiological and pathological conditions and the principal aging-related changes in number,function and phenotype that determine the loss of tissue renewal ***,we examine the possible cell rejuvenation *** cell rejuvenation may reverse the aging phenotype and the discovery of effective methods for inducing and differentiating pluripotent stem cells for cell replacement therapies could open up new possibilities for treating age-related diseases.

Semioethics and Literary Writing:Between Peirce and Bakhtin

In the early phase of its development, semiotics was understood as "semeiotics" and studied symptoms. Today we propose to recover this ancient dimension of semiotics focussed on health, care and the quality of life, and reorganise it in semioethical terms. In fact, as interference increases in communication between the historico-social sphere and the biological, between culture and nature, between the semiosphere and the biosphere, the need for a "semioethical turn" in the study of signs with an understanding of the relation of signs to values has become ever more *** writing is particularly interesting from this perspective thanks to its extraordinary capacity to stage values that animate life to the best in terms of the properly human. These values are characterized by high degrees of opening to the other, by responsiveness/answerability toward the other, by a propensity for listening to the other, for giving time to the *** on relations of distancing and at once of affinity among signs, metaphor—or more broadly imagery, fi gurative language—is emblematic of literary writing, though not limited to it. As amply demonstrated by Victoria Welby, far from serving as a mere decorative supplement, the fi gurative dimension of expression is structural to signifying processes, to the acquisition itself of knowledge and understanding. Welby's work may be read as prefi guring recent trends in language studies as represented by cognitive linguistics *** Bakhtin has also made an important contribution in this sense. Carbon monoxide contributes to the constipating effects of granisetron in rat colon

AIM To investigate the mechanisms underlying the potential contribution of the heme oxygenase/carbon monoxide(HO/CO) pathway in the constipating effects of granisetron. METHODS For in vivo studies, gastrointestinal motility was evaluated in male rats acutely treated with granisetron [25, 50, 75 μg/kg/subcutaneous(sc)], zinc protoporphyrin IX [Zn PPIX, 50 μg/kg/intraperitoneal(ip)] and hemin(50 μmol/L/kg/ip), alone or in combination. For in vitro studies, the contractile neurogenic response to electrical field stimulation(EFS, 3, 5, 10 Hz, 14 V, 1 ms, pulse trains lasting 10 s), as well as the contractile myogenic response to acetylcholine(ACh, 0.1-100 μmol/L) were evaluated on colon specimens incubated with granisetron(3 μmol/L, 15 min), Zn PPIX(10 μmol/L, 60 min) or CO-releasing molecule-3(CORM-3, 100, 200, 400 μmol/L) alone or in combination. These experiments were performed under co-treatment withor without atropine(3 μmol/L, a muscarinic receptor antagonist) or NG-nitro-L-Arginine(L-NNA, 100 μmol/L, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor).RESULTS Administration of granisetron(50, 75 μg/kg) in vivo significantly increased the time to first defecation(P = 0.045 vs vehicle-treated rats), clearly suggesting a constipating effect of this drug. Although administration of Zn PPIX or hemin alone had no effect on this gastrointestinal motility parameter, Zn PPIX co-administered with granisetron abolished the granisetron-induced constipation. On the other hand, co-administration of hemin and granisetron did not modify the increased constipation observed under granisetron alone. When administered in vitro, granisetron alone(3 μmol/L) did not significantly modify the colon's contractile response to either EFS or ACh. Incubation with Zn PPIX alone(10 μmol/L) significantly reduced the colon's contractile response to EFS(P = 0.016) but had no effect on contractile response to ACh. Aqueous electrochemical delithiation of cathode materials as a strategy to selectively recover lithium from waste lithium-ion batteries

Lithium recovery from end-of-life Li-ion batteries(LIBs)through pyro-and hydrometallurgical recycling processes involves several refining stages,with high consumption of reagents and energy.A competitive technological alternative is the electrochemical oxidation of the cathode materials,whereby lithium can be deintercalated and transferred to an electrolyte solution without the aid of chemical extracting *** article investigates the potential to selectively recover Li from LIB cathode materials by direct electrochemical extraction in aqueous *** process allowed to recovering up to 98%of Li from high-purity commercial cathode materials(LiMn_(2)O_(4),LiCoO_(2),and Li Ni_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)Co_(1/3)O_(2))with a faradaic efficiency of 98%and negligible co-extraction of Co,Ni,and *** process was then applied to recover Li from the real waste LIBs black mass obtained by the physical treatment of electric vehicle battery *** black mass contained graphite,conductive carbon,and metal impurities from current collectors and steel cases,which significantly influenced the evolution and performances of Li electrochemical ***,due to concomitant oxidation of impurities,lithium extraction yields and faradaic efficiencies were lower than those obtained with high-purity cathode *** oxidation was found to occur within the voltage range investigated,but it could not quantitatively explain the reduced Li extraction *** fact,a detailed investigation revealed that above 1.3 V ***/Ag Cl,conductive carbon can be oxidized,contributing to the decreased Li *** on the reported experimental results,guidelines were provided that quantitatively enable the extraction of Li from the black mass,while preventing the simultaneous oxidation of impurities and,consequently,reducing the energy consumption of the proposed Li recovery method.

Full recycling of spent lithium ion batteries with production of core-shell nanowires//exfoliated graphite asymmetric supercapacitor

A novel process is reported which produces an asymmetric supercapacitor through the complete recycling of end-of-life lithium ion *** electrodic powder recovered by industrial scale mechanical treatment of spent batteries was leached and the dissolved metals were precipitated as mixed metals *** battery-type positive electrodes were produced by electrodeposition into nanoporous alumina templates from the electrolytic baths prepared by dissolution of the precipitated *** impact of the different metals contained in the electrodic powder was evaluated by benchmarking the electrochemical performances of the recovered nanowires-based electrodes against electrodes produced by using high-purity *** of inactive Cu in the nanowires lowered the final capacitance of the electrodes while Ni showed a synergistic effect with cobalt providing a higher capacitance with respect to synthetic Co *** carbonaceous solid recovered after leaching was indepth characterized and tested as negative *** the chemical and electrochemical characterization indicate that the recovered graphite is characterized by the presence of oxygen functionalities introduced by the leaching *** has led to the obtainment of a recovered graphite characterized by an XPS C/O ratio,Raman spectrum and morphology close to literature reports for reduced graphene *** asymmetric supercapacitor assembled using the recovered nanowires-based positive electrodes and graphite as negative electrodes has shown a specific capacitance of 42 F g^(-1), computed including the whole weight of the positive electrode and recovered graphite,providing a maximum energy density of ~9 Wh kg^(-1) and a power density of 416 W kg^(-1) at 2.5 mA cm^(-2).

Systematic review: Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors in chemoprevention of hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND Neoangiogenesis is one of the key pathogenetic mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Modulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) seems to be a possible adjuvant therapy for HCC, due to the antiangiogenic and anti-fibrogenic activity of these drugs. AIM To elucidate the role of ARBs and ACE-Is in HCC. METHODS We performed an electronic search of the literature using the most accessed online databases (PubMed, Cochrane library, Scopus and Web of Science), entering the query terms "angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors" OR "ACE inhibitors" OR "ACE-I" AND "hepatocarcinoma*" OR "hepatocellular carcinoma;moreover "angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers" OR "ARBs" AND "hepatocarcinoma*" OR "hepatocellular carcinoma". Eligibility criteria were:(1) prospective or retrospective clinical studies;(2) epidemiological studies;and (3) experimental studies conducted in vivo or in vitro. Abstracts, conference papers, and reviews were excluded a priori. We limited our literature search to articles published in English, in peer-reviewed *** Thirty-one studies were selected. Three interventional studies showed that ACEIs had a significant protective effect on HCC recurrence only when used in combination with vitamin K or branched chain aminoacids, without a significant increase in overall survival. Of six retrospective observational studies, mainly focused on overall survival, only one demonstrated a prolonged survival in the ACE-Is group, whereas the two that also evaluated tumor recurrence showed conflicting results. All experimental studies displayed beneficial effects of RAS inhibitors on hepatocarcinogenesis.
