Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a neuromuscular condition resulting from the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the cortex,brainstem,and spinal *** the typical clinical phenotype of ALS involves both upper and lower motor neurons,human and animal studies over the years have highlighted the potential spread to other motor and non-motor regions,expanding the phenotype of *** superoxide dismutase 1(SOD1)mutations represent a minority of ALS cases,the SOD1 gene remains a milestone in ALS research as it represents the first genetic target for personalized *** numerous single case reports or case series exhibiting extramotor symptoms in patients with ALS mutations in SOD1(SOD1-ALS),no studies have comprehensively explored the full spectrum of extramotor neurological manifestations in this *** this narrative review,we analyze and discuss the available literature on extrapyramidal and non-motor features during *** multifaceted expression of SOD1 could deepen our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms,pointing towards a multidisciplinary approach for affected patients in light of new therapeutic strategies for SOD1-ALS.

Porous asphalts have supplementary surface and volumetric properties(e.g., acoustic absorption, drain ability, texture, and friction). These properties are linked to intrinsic factors(e.g., gradation and bitumen content) and extrinsic factors(e.g., traffic load), while their evolution over time depends on complex phenomena and processes that cause their deterioration and therefore affect safety, noise, and budget. Despite the decay of so many and complex properties over time, there is a lack of criteria to synergistically optimize the pavement system. Consequently, the objective of this study is to set up and validate a design method that synergistically addresses the most relevant properties of friction courses as a part of a pavement structure. The abovementioned method is based on indepth analyses of the literature and on laboratory and on-site tests carried for several years in order to evaluate the decay over time of the main surface and volumetric *** show that (1) the level of fulfilment of single requirements varies over time and among the characteristics;(2) a sound optimization of the design of the mix in order to balance the different characteristics is needed;(3) further studies are needed because of uncertainty in predicting the main surface properties.

Treefall gap, canopy opening caused by the death of one or more trees, is the dominant form of disturbance in many forest systems worldwide. Gaps play an important role in forest ecology helping to pre- serve bio- and pedo-diversity, influencing nutrient cycles, and maintain- ing the complex structure of the late-successional forests. Over the last 30 years, numerous reviews have been written describing gap dynamics. Here we synthesize current understanding on gap dynamics relating to tree regeneration with particular emphasis on gap characteristics consid- ered critical to develop ecologically sustainable forest management sys- tems and to conserve native biodiversity. Specifically, we addressed the question： how do gaps influence forest structure？ From the literature re- viewed, the size of gaps induces important changes in factors such as light intensity, soil humidity and soil biological properties that influence tree species regeneration and differ in gaps of different sizes. Shade- tolerant species can colonize small gaps; shade-intolerant species need large gaps for successful regeneration. Additionally, gap dynamics differ between temperate, boreal, and tropical forests, showing the importance of climate differences in driving forest regeneration. This review summa- rizes information of use to forest managers who design cutting regimes that mimic natural disturbances and who must consider forest structure, forest climate, and the role of natural disturbance in their designs.

Despite almost a century of studies dealing with traffic noise,researchers and practitioners still face old and new issues when designing a low-noise *** that,this manuscript aims at focusing on a number of unsolved questions,namely theoretical or technological.1)Is it viable to balance diverse road-related needs(i.e.,noise,expected life,texture levels,and friction)?2)How much does the pavement material affect its acoustic performance(the remaining factors being constant)?3)How much reliable is the relationship between road texture and mixture aggregate gradation?Based on the analysis of these issues,it emerges that:1)optimal pavement design involves complex mix optimization and there are theoretical and practical bases to set up a balanced approach to address the complexity of pavement design;2)high percentages of crumb rubber could optimise road acoustic response but this latter has a relationship with the tyre/road noise(expressed,for example,in terms of close proximity index)that calls for further investigation;3)aggregate gradation appears to be a reliable basis to predict surface texture and therefore,under given boundary conditions,tyre/road noise;and 4)further studies and investigations are needed in terms of local calibration of deterioration curves and setting up of a sound method to assess the frequency response of asphalt concretes and to govern on-site noise indicators based on mixture properties.

In the last few decades,the use of environmental radionuclides,particularly caesium-137(^(137)Cs),represented one of the most valid methods for estimating soil ***,the cost associated with the use of the equipment needed for radiometric analyses is still high and,for this reason,finding more easily measurable indicators can be *** is a strong correlation between^(137)Cs,organic carbon(OC),nitrogen(N)and water soluble phenols(WSP)exists,indicating the latter parameters as possible early indicators of soil *** on the above assumptions,the main purpose of this work is to identify specific soil chemical parameters able to indicate early triggering of soil ***,several soil parameters such as pH,electric conductivity(EC),WSP,OC,N and C/N have been evaluated against^(137)Cs and on a comparative *** addition,since the rate of soil erosion depends on the degree of coverage and canopy structure,two different tree species(Pinus nigra laricio *** Fagus sylvatica L.)have been considered in this contribution in which ten different scenarios of forest management have been *** results show that the reduction in tree cover of managed sites triggers erosion and nutrient loss *** has been observed that the loss of^(137)Cs,compared to the control areas,is closely correlated with those of WSP,OC and *** parameters(WSP,OC and N),more easily assessable,can be a valid tool to understand easily,triggering of erosive phenomena.

Considering that diverse fire severities can affect soil properties differently,the aim of this study was to examine to what extent changes in soil properties caused by fire could condition seedling *** new approach is for identifying a new fire cause-effect chain to qualify the impacts of fire on soils with the purpose of using fire as a tool in forest management to favour Pinus halepensis *** study area was a reforested *** area which had been crossed by fire for78.8 ha,causing various degrees of *** forest was subdivided into three large areas according to the gravity of crown scorch,[low(LS),medium(MS)and high(HS)severity],on the basis of needle yellowing which usually occurs after exposure to direct *** showed significant differences in soil properties with respect to fire *** the HS area,total nitrogen and carbon were considerably reduced while ash and phosphorus contents significantly *** changes in soil properties,in particular to nutrient levels,affected *** regeneration,mainly the first year after the *** regeneration occurred in areas affected by moderate fire severity in which the temperatures reached increased the mineralization of soil organic matter with the consequent release of nutrients available for seedling ***,moderate fire severity suppressed the regeneration of grasses,reducing the interspecific *** of seedlings were inversely proportional to the density of *** the number was abundant(LS),the height was modest;conversely,where the number was low(HS),the greater hypsometric differentiation of pine seedlings was *** results suggest that moderate fire severity represents an environmental stress(hormesis)altering microscale conditions to increase pine germination and *** exposure of *** to a moderate environmental factor that is damaging at higher intensities,induces an adaptive

Olive oil production constitutes one of the most important agro-industrial business for mediterranean countries,where 97% of the international production is *** an activity,mainly carried out through three phase olive oil mill plants,generates huge amounts of solid and liquid by-products further than olive ***-chemical features of these by-products depend on various factors such as soil and climatic conditions,agricultural practices and *** currently carried out,the disposal of these byproducts may lead to numerous problems taking into account management,economic and particularly environmental ***,olive mill wastewater is not easily biodegradable due to its high chemical and biochemical oxygen demand,its high content in phenolic compounds,high ratio C/N and low pH,leading consequently to soil and water source ***,the above-mentioned statements,olive mill waste disposal constitutes nowadays a challenge for oil industry *** becomes necessary to look for alternative solutions in order to overcome environmental problems and ensure the sustainability of oil *** co-digestion of olive mill wastewater with other agro-industrial matrices could be one of these solutions;since it offers the possibility to produce green energy and break down toxicological compounds contained in these wastewater for a better disposal of the digested matrices as soil *** this contest,this note reports the functioning principle of an automated medium scale plant for anaerobic co-digestion of olive mill wastewater.
