Anomalous phenomena in DC–ULF geomagnetic daily variation registered three days before the 12 May 2008 Wenchuan M_S 8.0 earthquake

The hourly data of the vertical Z and the horizontal H components of 37 ground-based DC-ULF geomagnetic stations are examined during 20 April-12 May 2008. On 9 May 2008, three days before the Wenchuan MS 8.0 shock, anomalies-a double low-point and a decreased amplitude-are registered on the curves of the Z component at 25 stations in a large-scale area surrounding the Wenchuan epicentral area. The H component shows none of the double low-point phenomenon but does exhibit a reduced magnitude at the same time. The geomagnetic index Kp is also examined and indicates that the anomalies appear at a solar quiet period. The appearing time shift(Tzs) between the first low-point on May 9 and the minimum point occurring time of May 1-5, 2008 is also *** results show that Tzs is on the order of 1-2 hours earlier or later than usual and there is a 2-6 hours’ gap between these two lowpoints. However, there is still a transition area which includes the epicenter where Tzs=0. Variation amplitude examined on vertical Z increases as the distance from the epicenter decreases. An Earth-air-ionosphere model has been employed to investigate a possible mechanism of this phenomenon and positive results have been unexpectedly attained. All these above-related results tend to prove that the variations of the Z and H on May 9, 2008 during the solar quiet period are probably associated with the forthcoming Wenchuan MS 8.0 earthquake.

AN ITERATIVE BEM FOR THE INVERSE PROBLEM OF DETECTING CORROSION IN A PIPE

In this paper, we consider an inverse problem of determining the corrosion occurring in an inaccessible interior part of a pipe from the measurements on the outer boundary. The problem is modelled by Laplace's equation with an unknown term γ in the boundary condition on the inner boundary. Based on the Maz'ya iterative algorithm, a regularized BEM method is proposed for obtaining approximate solutions for this inverse problem. The numerical results show that our method can be easily realized and is quite effective.

Tunnel junctions in a III-V nanowire by surface engineering

We demonstrate a simple way of fabricating high performance tunnel devices from p-doped InAs nanowires by tailoring the n-doped surface accumulation layer inherent to InAs surfaces. By using appropriate ammonium sulfide based surface passivation before metallization without any further thermal treatment, we demonstrate characteristics of tunnel p-n junctions, namely Esaki and backward diodes, with figures of merit better than previously published for InAs homojunctions. The further optimization of both the surface doping, in a quantitative way, and the device geometry allows us to demonstrate that these nanowire-based technologically-simple diodes have promising direct current characteristics for integrated high frequency detection or generation.

Redonda is a small volcanic Caribbean island that is home to at least 4 endemic lizard species,including the Critically Endangered ground lizard(Pholidoscelis atratus).Black rats(Rattus rattus)and domestic goats(Capra hircus)were introduced to the island at some time after its discovery by Europeans in the late *** had a devastating effect on the island,resulting in the loss of nearly all trees and most of the ground *** count surveys of *** in 2012 indicated low densities,and the invasive rats were observed hunting and preying on the *** populations of rats and goats were successfully removed in 2017 as part of an ecological restoration program,and native vegetation and invertebrate populations have increased rapidly *** surveys in 2017,2018,and 2019 show the lizard population has increased by more than *** 2017,as rats and goats were being removed,we evaluated the morphology and escape behavior of this species and repeated these measurements 1 year *** observed that *** had become bolder,with a reduced flight *** also detected changes in limb morphology related to locomotion and suggest possible explanations that will need to be further investigated in the *** results show how the removal of invasive species can rapidly affect lizard population recovery and behavior,potentially restoring island ecosystems to their pre-human interference dynamics.

One of the major challenges for optical network operators is related to realizing profitable networks that preserve the overall satisfaction of their end *** necessitates ensuring a controlled network resource usage while decreasing connection blocking ***,optical networks are witnessing the introduction of an increasing number of new services,each having different *** such,the evolution towards resource efficient connection setup management strategies that provide differentiated call-blocking probability becomes *** on the previous observation,we propose in this paper a novel connection setup management *** latter aims to differentiate the blocking probability among different classes of lightpath requests,while avoiding the starvation of the lower class *** main idea behind our proposal is to privilige higher class lightpaths via preemption and to protect the lower class lightpaths through *** this manner,the proposed strategy serves the double objective of minimizing the overall connection blocking probability and of realizing Quality of Service（QoS） *** previous claim is asserted through our simulation results that gauge the main benefits behind our proposed connection setup *** simulation results drawn from the National Science Foundation Network（NSFNET） and the European Optical Network（EON） show that the proposed strategy achieves both differentiated and low blocking probabilities.

Effect of Substitution of Cement by Mineral Powders on the Physico-mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Sand Concretes

The approach that contributes to the development of eco-materials in construction is the use of mineral powders,which can improve mechanical properties and reduce cement *** article aims to study the effect of substitution by mass of cement with mineral powders on the physicomechanical properties and microstructure of sand *** used mineral powders are A:the limestone,B:the natural pozzolan,C:the hydraulic lime,D:(1/3 limestone+1/3 natural pozzolan+1/3 hydraulic lime),and E:(1/2 natural pozzolan+1/2 hydraulic lime).The studied percentages are 5%,10%and 15%,in both separated and combined *** studied properties are workability,compressive strength,the elasticity modulus in compression,shrinkage and microstructure *** objective is to target the optimal percentage of the substitution of cement with mineral powders,which ensures the best compromise between the main properties of the studied sand *** obtained results show that the optimal percentage is in favor of the substitution of cement by 10%D(1/3 limestone,1/3 natural pozzolan and 1/3 hydraulic lime).Even the 15%of mineral powder D,presented similar performances compared to the sand concrete(without mineral powders).Finally,in the context of the development of eco-materials,it should be noted that the 10%D and 15%D(1/3 limestone,1/3 natural pozzolan and 1/3 hydraulic lime)contribute to decrease the use of cement and consequently to reduce of CO2 emissions.

AIM:To explore this hypothesis that smooth muscle cells may be capable of acquiring a myofibroblastic phenotype,we have studied the expression of smoothelin in fibrotic ***:Normal liver tissue(n=3)was obtained from macroscopically normal parts of hepatectomy,taken at a distance from *** specimens included post-burn cutaneous hypertrophic scars(n=3),fibrotic liver tissue(n=5),cirrhotic tissue(viral and alcoholic hepatitis)(n=5),and hepatocellular carcinomas(n=5).Tissue samples were fixed in 10%formalin and embedded in paraffin for immunohistochemistry or were immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen-cooled isopentane for confocal microscopy *** were stained with antibodies against smoothelin,which is expressed exclusively by smooth muscle cells,andα-smooth muscle actin,which is expressed by both smooth muscle cells and ***:In hypertrophic scars,α-smooth muscle actin was detected in vascular smooth muscle cells and in numerous myofibroblasts present in and around nodules,whereas smoothelin was exclusively expressed in vascular smooth muscle *** the normal liver,vascular smooth muscle cells were the only cells that expressα-smooth muscle actin and *** fibrotic areas of the liver,myofibroblasts expressingα-smooth muscle actin were *** co-expressingα-smooth muscle actin and smoothelin were observed,and their number was slightly increased in parallel with the degree of fibrosis(absent in liver with mild or moderate fibrosis;5%to 10%positive in liver showing severe fibrosis).In cirrhotic septa,numerous myofibroblasts co-expressedα-smooth muscle actin and smoothelin(more than 50%).In hepatocellular carcinomas,the same pattern of expression forα-smooth muscle actin and smoothelin was observed in the stroma reaction surrounding the tumor and around tumoral cell *** all pathological liver samples,α-smooth muscle actin and smoothelin were co-expressed in vascular smooth mu
