A hydrogel based on chitosan,collagen,hydroxypropyl-c-cyclodextrin and polyethylene glycol was developed and characterized.The incorporation of nano-hydroxyapatite and pre-encapsulated hydrophobic/hydrophilic model drugs diminished the porosity of hydrogel from 81.6262.25%to 69.9863.07%.Interactions between components of hydrogel,demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy and rheology,generated a network that was able to trap bioactive components and delay the burst delivery.The thixotropic behavior of hydrogel provided adaptability to facilitate its implantation in a minimally invasive way.Release profiles from microspheres included or not in hydrogel revealed a two-phase behavior with a burst-and a controlled-release period.The same release rate for microspheres included or not in the hydrogel in the controlled-release period demonstrated that mass transfer process was controlled by internal diffusion.Effective diffusion coefficients,Deff,that describe internal diffusion inside microspheres,and mass transfer coefficients,h,i.***.the contribution of hydrogel to mass transfer,were determined using‘genetic algorithms’,obtaining values between 2.64·10^(-15) and 6.67·10^(-15)m^(2)/s for Deff and 8.50·10^(-10) to 3.04·10^(-9) m/s for h.The proposed model fits experimental data,obtaining an R2-value ranged between 95.41 and 98.87%.In vitro culture of mesenchymal stem cells in hydrogel showed no manifestations of intolerance or toxicity,observing an intense proliferation of the cells after 7 days,being most of the scaffold surface occupied by living cells.

Background:Prevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini,Schistosoma mekongi and soil-transmitted helminths(STH)remains high in Lao People’s Democratic Republic(Lao PDR),despite control efforts including mass-drug administration,education and communication campaigns.New approaches are required to advance helminth control.Methods:An ecohealth study was conducted on two Mekong islands in Southern Laos.Demographic and behavioural data were collected by questionnaire.Human and animal reservoir stools were examined.Bithynia spp.and Neotricula aperta snails were examined using shedding.Fresh water fish were examined using digestion technique.Multivariate random-effects analysis was used to find risk factors associated with helminth infections.Results:Human infection rates with O.viverrini,hookworm,S.mekongi,Trichuris trichiura,Ascaris lumbricoides and Taenia spp.were 60.7%,44.1%,22.2%,4.1%,0.6%and 0.1%,respectively.Heavy intensity infections were 4.2%,3.6%and 1.8%for O.viverrini,S.mekongi and hookworm,respectively.O.viverrini and S.mekongi infection rates among dogs and cats were 25.0%and 14.7%,respectively.Of the cats tested,53.1%were infected with O.viverrini.Prevalence of O.viverrini and S.mekongi in snails was 0.3%and 0.01%,respectively.Overall prevalence of O.viverrini infection in fresh water fish was 26.9%,with the highest infection rates occurring in Hampala dispa(87.1%),Cyclocheilichthys apogon(85.7%)and Puntius brevis(40.0%).Illiteracy and lower socioeconomic status increased the risk of O.viverrini infection,while those aged 10-16 years and possessing latrines at home were less likely to be infected.Household dogs and cats that consumed raw fish were significantly and positively associated with O.viverrini infection of the household members.For S.mekongi,children under 9 years old were exposed significantly to this infection,compared to older age groups.Conclusions:There is a pressing need to design and implement an integrated helminth control intervention on the Mekong islands in southern Lao PDR.Given the highly dy

Background:To avoid or mitigate potential project-related adverse health effects,the Trident copper project in Kalumbila,northwestern Zambia,commissioned a health impact assessment.HIV was identified a priority health issue based on the local vulnerability to HIV transmission and experience from other mining projects in Africa.Hence,an HIV/AIDS management plan was developed,including community and workplace interventions,with HIV testing and counselling(HTC)being one of the key components.We present trends in HTC data over a 4-year period.Methods:In 13 communities affected by the Trident project,HTC was implemented from 2012 onwards,using rapid diagnostic tests,accompanied by pre-and post-test counselling through trained personnel.In addition,HTC was initiated in the project workforce in 2013,coinciding with the launch of the mine development.HTC uptake and HIV positivity rates were assessed in the study population and linked to demographic factors using regression analysis.Results:In total,11,638 community members and 5564 workers have taken up HTC with an increase over time.The HIV positivity rate in the community was 3.0%in 2012 and 3.4%in 2015,while positivity rate in the workforce was 5.2%in 2013 and 4.3%in 2015.Females showed a significantly higher odds of having a positive test result than males(odds ratio(OR)=1.96,95%confidence interval(CI):1.55-2.50 among women in the community and OR=2.90,95%CI:1.74-4.84 among women in the workforce).HTC users in the 35-49 years age group were most affected by HIV,with an average positivity rate of 6.6%in the community sample and 7.9%in the workforce sample.These study groups had 4.50 and 4.95 higher odds of being positive,respectively,compared to their younger counterparts(15-24 years).Conclusions:While HTC uptake increased five-fold in the community and almost three-fold in the workplace,the HIV positivity rates were insignificantly higher in 2015 compared to 2012.Our data can be used alongside other surveillance data to track HIV transmission in this specific context

The yellow pond turtle Mauremys mutica is widely cultured using both greenhouse-reared and outdoor pond-reared models.Individuals from the two models often show different tolerances to dramatic temperature changes caused by extreme weather events.However,the mechanism underlying the difference is unclear.In this study,we found that for greenhouse-reared turtles(GRTs),the expression levels of an immune-related gene for transferrin were significantly different(P0.05)from the control group for all time points(3 h,6 h,12 h,24 h and 48 h),whereas two time points(12 h and 24 h)were significantly different(P<0.05)for the AHS group.Our results indicate that ACS may influence the immunity of GRTs and have no influence on OPTs,whereas AHS may largely affect the immunity of OPTs and have little influence on GRTs.The findings provide insights into the mechanism underlying the different morbidity and mortality rates of turtles from different culture models after extreme weather events.

Urbanization effects on living organisms are spatially heterogeneous.Here we quantified the abundance of birds per tree in forested urban and rural habitats for 85,829 trees mainly in China and Europe.A population model was based on the assumption that:1)birds have a normally distributed habitat preference;2)an increase in population size linked to the habitat preference;3)a population size dependent on the habitat preference;and 4)the removal of a certain fraction of individuals giving rise to extinction.We tested for large-scale differences in the impact of urbanization on the frequency distribution of the difference in abundance between urban and rural habitats in China and parts of Europe.The difference in the frequency distribution of urban population density of birds in trees minus rural population density of birds in trees in China and Europe was statistically significant suggesting that the abundance of birds differed between trees in urban and rural habitats,but more so in China than in Europe.We hypothesize that more pronounced differences in China than in Europe may have arisen due to the Four Pests Campaign in 1958-1962 that resulted in death of hundreds of millions of birds(mainly tree sparrows Passer monfanus,but also numerous other less common species that were starting to become urbanized around 1960).Species that were less common in 1960 could not sustain reductions in population size in urban areas and hence these species are still rare or absent in urban areas today 60 years later.

DEAR EDITOR,Previous work based on molecular evidence has shown that most socially monogamous birds follow a genetic polyandrous mating system.However,our knowledge about avian mating systems is heavily biased toward the north temperate zone,with data on tropical birds remaining relatively scarce.This uneven distribution of both phylogenetic and spatial sampling has hampered our understanding and interpretation of results.In this study,we investigated the frequency of extra-pair paternity(EPP)in a tropical population of yellow-bellied prinias(Prinia flaviventris)in Guangxi,southern China.A total of 129 individuals belonging to 24 nests were sampled,among which 12 out of 83 chicks(14.46%)in seven nests were found to be EPP offspring.In nests in which all nestlings were sampled,only five out of 56 chicks were EPP offspring,accounting for an unbiased EPP rate of 8.93%.This rate is below the average rate of EPP in the family Sylviidae.The possible causes of EPP in prinias and the occurrence of EPP in birds with high resource investment and intensive parental care are discussed.This study highlights the value of genome-wide markers in determining relatedness in a wild bird species without a reference genome.

Litsea,a non-monophyletic group of the tribe Laureae(Lauraceae),plays important roles in the tropical and subtropical forests of Asia,Australia,Central and North America,and the islands of the Pacific.However,intergeneric relationships between Litsea and Laurus,Lindera,Parasassafras and Sinosassafras of the tribe Laureae remain unresolved.In this study,we present phylogenetic analyses of seven newly sequenced Litsea plastomes,together with 47 Laureae plastomes obtained from public databases,representing six genera of the Laureae.Our results highlight two highly supported monophyletic groups of Litsea taxa.One is composed of 16 Litsea taxa and two Lindera taxa.The 18 plastomes of these taxa were further compared for their gene structure,codon usage,contraction and expansion of inverted repeats,sequence repeats,divergence hotspots,and gene evolution.The complete plastome size of newly sequenced taxa varied between 152,377 bp(Litsea auriculata)and 154,117 bp(Litsea pierrei).Seven of the 16 Litsea plastomes have a pair of insertions in the IRa(trnL-trnH)and IRb(ycf2)regions.The 18 plastomes of Litsea and Lindera taxa exhibit similar gene features,codon usage,oligonucleotide repeats,and inverted repeat dynamics.The codons with the highest frequency among these taxa favored A/T endings and each of these plastomes had nine divergence hotspots,which are located in the same regions.We also identified six protein coding genes(accD,ndhJ,rbcL,rpoC2,ycf1 and ycf2)under positive selection in Litsea;these genes may play important roles in adaptation of Litsea species to various environments.

This discussion of Raja Ampat case, a subdivision of West Papua province, is related to the global warming issue where small islands will be narrowed as a result of sea level rise. Furthermore, it is related to autonomy regulations where each municipality and district has their own policy. The capital of Raja Ampat District in the east of Indonesia is developed from traditional place into central urban area. Raja Ampat, a naturally beautiful island, is located in a remote area famous for its diving spot for foreign tourists, amazing underwater life, bird watching, and to experience a traditional lifestyle with specific tropical fauna and flora. The problem is how to develop a city which needs to be in a stagnant extensive phase but neither in vertical nor horizontal development to protect forest as conservation area due to limited land area. Identification and design methods used in this research is to develop settlement in Raja Ampat archipelago area which has around 610 large and small islands, atoll, and have 4.860 km shoreline with only 34 islands inhabited. The urban design for this archipelago of 1:6 ratios of land and ocean needs to be different, since it is dominated by water. With the limited land area resources, the development needs to be focused on the ocean area by optimizing land area.

VARIATION CHARACTERISTICS OF tropical CYCLONES MAKING LANDFALL IN CHINA AT DIFFERENT INTENSITIES

According to the national standard(2006)on tropical cyclone(TC)intensity,TCs are categorized into six intensity types,namely,tropical depression(TD),tropical storm(TS),severe tropical storm(STS), typhoon(TY),severe typhoon(STY),and super severe typhoon(SSTY).Fifty-eight years(1949–2006)of the datasets from the Yearbook of Typhoons and Yearbook of tropical Cyclones were used to study the variation characteristics of TCs making landfalls in China's Mainland,Hainan and Taiwan islands.The main results are as follows.First,interannual or interdecadal variations in the number of landfalling TCs at different intensities exist.As far as long-term trends are concerned,the TD and TS frequencies show a significant linearly decreasing trend while those of STY show a significant linearly increasing trend.Second, a significant period of 6–8 years exist in the variations of annual landfalling TD,TS,and STS frequencies while quasi-16-year periods are found in the annual TY frequency.Third,TD and TS are generated mostly over the South China Sea,while TY,STY,and SSTY mostly over the waters southeast of the Bashi Channel and the ocean to the east of the Philippines.Fourth,as far as interdecadal trends are concerned,the frequencies of landfalling TD and TS generated over the South China Sea show significant linearly decreasing trends.However,TY and STY show significant linearly increasing trends.
