Bridges are important elements in road system and can influence the entire economy of cities and region. Usually, these structures have high financial investments for their constructions, in this way, maintenance and conservation become so important. Inspection is a technical activity that covers several operations, including performance analysis; examination; final performance report, other operations may be necessary, such as maintenance work, recovery, strengthening and rehabilitation. Technical examination together with some test methods allows a critical and parametric judgment of the bridge performance by minimizing the subjectivity of visual evaluations, and permits a more detailed diagnosis. This paper discusses the methodology to perform tests to complement the assessment recommended by DNIT （Brazilian National Department of Transport Infrastructure）, which consists only on a visual judgment. This approach provides technical basis to classify the bridges as its need and urgency of maintenance.

Preparation of Fame by Microwave Irradiation Using Boron Trifluoride as a Catalyst

Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) preparation is an important step to determine fatty acid composition of oils and fats. Transesterification with boron trifluoride (BF3) in methanol has been widely used;however, the transesterification of triacylglycerols usually involves a long heating time, whereas much shorter reaction times may be sufficient when microwave irradiation is used. The purpose of this paper was to optimize FAME preparation with BF3 by microwave irradiation. A three-factor central composite routable (CCRD) design was used to study the effect of the heating time (A), irradiation power (B), and volume of sodium hydroxide (C) on FAME concentration. A second-order polynomial model was employed to generate a surface response. Optimum conditions obtained for FAME preparation were time of 60 s, irradiation power of 220 W, and base volume of 1.5 mL. Compared to conventional methods, the advantages of this method are the quick result and the accuracy.

Stability of Soybean Genotypes and Their Classification into Relative Maturity Groups in Brazil

The stability of soybean genotypes is very important in breeding programs for not only the evaluation, selection, and production of cultivars but also the establishment of parameters required for the classification of genotypes into relative maturity groups (RMG). The aim of this study was to define stable genotypes for traits, such as days to flowering, days to maturity, and length of the reproductive period, and to classify them into RMG. For this purpose, 20 commercial soybean cultivars were evaluated in 12 environments distributed in the major producing regions of Brazil. Assessments according to the Eberhart and Russell method and the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) method were effective in the identification of stable genotypes and their classification into RMG. These methods can also be used collectively for this purpose. Our results showed that the AMMI method led to a better interpretation of genotype-environment interactions. Thus, RMG obtained on the basis of stable genotypes represented a good estimate of the relative maturity of soybean crops throughout Brazil. *Corresponding author.

Intraspecific competition at the larval stage is an important ecological factor affecting life-history,adaptation and evolutionary trajectory in holometabolous ***,the molecular pathways underpinning these ecological processes are poorly *** reared Drosophila melanogaster at three egg densities(5,60,and 300 eggs/mL)and sequenced the transcriptomes of pooled third-instar *** also examined emergence time,egg-to-adult viability,adult mass,and adult sex-ratio at each *** crowding had minor detrimental effects on adult phenotypes compared to low density and yielded 24 differentially expressed genes(DEGs),including several chitinase *** contrast,high crowding had substantial detrimental effects on adult phenotypes and yielded 2107 *** these,upregulated gene sets were enriched in sugar,steroid and amino acid metabolism as well as DNA replication pathways,whereas downregulated gene sets were enriched in ABC transporters,taurine,Toll/Imd signaling,and P450 xenobiotics metabolism ***,our findings show that larval crowding has a large consistent effect on several molecular pathways(i.e.,core responses)with few pathways displaying density-specific regulation(i.e.,idiosyncratic responses).This provides important insights into how holometabolous insects respond to intraspecific competition during development.

Characterization and Modification of a Clay Mineral Used in Adsorption Tests

Clay minerals are widespread in natural systems and have been widely used for the removal of pollutants. In this study, natural expanded vermiculite was used in adsorption tests to remove ammonium nitrogen from landfill leachate. The modification of vermiculite was carried out using NaOH and HCl, and for both modifications the best concentration was 0.1 mol/L. The results produced by XRD (X-ray diffraction) showed that Al replaced K after modification of the vermiculite using HCl and that Mg and Na replaced K after modification using NaOH. It was observed that the adsorption capacity increased as the percentage in mass of K diminished. The Langmuir is the isotherm that presents the best fit of the data, and the values of RL (the Langmuir coefficient) suggest that the adsorption is linear. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the process is spontaneous and endothermic, that there is a high affinity between the adsorbate and the adsorbent, and that physical adsorption is prevalent.

Urban Sprawl and the Challenges for Urban Planning

Dispersed urbanization, urban planning and management instruments such as zoning, and urban expansion zones, have become increasingly consistent in leading cities toward an uncertain and chaotic future. The urban perimeters of municipalities have been used increasingly in favor agents of the reproduction of unequal urban space, aggravating the process of socio-spatial segregation, the formation of urban gaps and real estate speculation. Inherent to this process, infrastructure, one of the most important components of urban land and one of the most costly for local governments, has become increasingly dispersed and obsolete in the midst of the disordered occupation of the city’s land. Based on the above, this paper aims to analyze the phenomenon of urban sprawl in the city of Londrina by means of geotechnologies and to identify the impacts that the form of land occupation the city has employed may cause on the current and future scenario of the municipality in general. To this end, thematic maps were drawn up from multiple sources, which, allied to a review of the literature, indicate that the municipality of Londrina exhibits intense characteristics of the phenomenon of urban sprawl, leading to consequences for territorial ordering and the egalitarian spatial distribution of essential services to the population.

Social Competence and Obesity in Teenagers: An Analysis of the Last Ten Years of Studies

Socially competent people using better strategies for solving interpersonal problems are more readily accepted by peers and valued by adults. Obese individuals, especially teenagers, have deficits in several social skills, which lead to damage to the relationships, self-esteem and in their valuation by social agents. This study examines how the literature of the last decade associates the components of social competence to obesity in adolescents. The research was carried out in electronic databases in the period between Jan. 2005 and Dec. 2015, resulting in 329 articles. 303 were excluded as they did not meet the inclusion criteria, and 26 original articles have been analyzed. The results showed that the components of social competence were negatively associated with obesity and most studies focused on self-esteem, pattern of interaction with peers and social relationship. The social competence was highlighted as important for interventions aimed at reducing weight.
