Purpose:This meta-analytical study aimed to explore the effects of resistance training(RT) volume on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation in postmenopausal and older ***:A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials in PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,and *** controlled trials with postmenopausal and older females that compared RT effects on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation with a control group(CG) were *** reviewers selected the studies,extracted the data,and performed the risk of bias and certainty of the evidence(Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GRADE)) *** body and abdominal adiposity,blood lipids,glucose,and C-reactive protein were included for meta-analysis.A random-effects model,standardized mean difference(Hedges’ g),and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were used for ***:Twenty randomized controlled trials(overall risk of bias:some concerns;GRADE:low to very low) with overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females were *** groups were divided into low-volume RT(LVRT,~44 sets/week) and high-volume RT(HVRT,~77 sets/week).Both RT groups presented improved body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation when compared to ***,HVRT demonstrated higher effect sizes than LVRT for glucose(HVRT=-1.19;95%CI:-1.63 to-0.74;LVRT=-0.78;95%CI:-1.15 to-0.41) and C-reactive protein(HVRT=-1.00;95%CI:-1.32 to-0.67;LVRT=-0.34;95%CI,-0.63 to-0.04)) when compared to ***:Compared to CG,HVRT protocols elicit greater improvements in metabolic risk and inflammation outcomes than LVRT in overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females.

Effect of a cardiac telerehabilitation program during COVID-19 associated social isolation

This study aimed to compare the impact of a cardiac telerehabilitation(CTR)protocol aimed at patients with cardiovascular diseases(CVDs)during the period of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)associated with social *** retrospective cohort study included 58 participants diagnosed with stable cardiovascular diseases(CVDs),which were divided into three groups:conventional cardiac rehabilitation(CCR)group(n?20),composed of patients undergoing conventional cardiac rehabilitation;cardiac telerehabilitation(CTR)group(n?18),composed of patients undergoing cardiac telerehabilitation and control group(n?20),composed of patients admitted for cardiac rehabilitation who had not started training *** results showed that body mass index was reduced(p?0.019)and quality of life was improved(e.g.,limitations due to physical aspects[p?0.021),vitality[p?0.045]and limitations due to emotional aspects[p?0.024])by CCR compared to *** outcomes were not improved by CTR(p>0.05).However,this strategy prevented clinical deterioration in the investigated *** CCR achieved a superior effect on clinical improvement and quality of life,CTR was relevant to stabilize the blood pressure and quality of life of patients with cardiovascular diseases during the period of COVID-19-associated social isolation.

In this editorial,we comment on the article by Marangoni et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology 2023;29:5618-5629,about“Diet as an epigenetic factor in inflammatory bowel disease”.The authors emphasized the role of diet,especially the interaction with genetics,in promoting the inflam-matory process in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)patients,focusing on DNA methylation,histone modifications,and the influence of *** this editorial,we explore the interaction between genetics,gut microbiota,and diet,in an only ***,we provided dietary recommendations for patients with *** Western diet,characterized by a low fiber content and deficiency the micronutrients,impacts short-chain fatty acids production and may be related to the pathogenesis of *** the other hand,the consumption of the Mediter-ranean diet and dietary fibers are associated with reduced risk of IBD flares,particularly in Crohn’s disease(CD)*** to the dietary guidance from the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases(IOIBD),the regular consumption of fruits and vegetables while reducing the consumption of saturated,trans,dairy fat,additives,processed foods rich in maltodextrins,and artificial sweeteners containing sucralose or saccharine is recommended to CD *** patients with ulcerative colitis,the IOIBD recommends the increased intake of natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids and follows the same restrictive recommendations aimed at CD patients,with the possible inclusion of red *** conclusion,IBD is a complex and hetero-geneous disease,and future studies are needed to elucidate the influence of epigenetics on diet and microbiota in IBD patients.

Severe SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Late Impact on the Retinal Ganglion Cell Layer Thickness

Purpose: The involvement of the ocular anterior segment by SARS-CoV-2 has been the subject of many studies, however, the repercussions on the posterior segment, particularly on the different layers of the retina and optic nerve, are still little known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of severe COVID-19 on the retinal ganglion cell layer (RGCL) thickness. Methods: This observational, prospective and analytical study was performed in the Ophthalmology Department of the FACISA university Center, Campina Grande. Three groups were included: group I (control), 29 healthy individuals who had not severe COVID-19;group II (infirmary), 24 individuals who had COVID-19 and were hospitalized in the infirmary;and group III, 25 individuals who had severe COVID-19 and required Intense Care Unit (ICU). All individuals had ophthalmologic examination and assessment of RGCL thickness using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Statistical tests required p ≤ 0.05 to reject the null hypothesis. Results: The mean of RGCL thickness was significantly reduced in individuals from GIII (77.9 ± 8.9 µm), as compared with GII (83.9 ± 10.9 µm) and GI (82.8 ± 6.5 µm) (p = 0.0027). The mean measurements from the retinal neve fiber layer (RNFL) of the optic nerve head were similar. However, when evaluated sectoral, the mean of RNFL at the temporal sector of the optic disc was significantly lower in group GIII (p Conclusion: The RGCL thickness from patients with severe COVID-19 was significantly reduced. This finding supports that the SARS-CoV-2 has systemic action and affinity for nerve cells, including those from the retina and are related to the severity of the infection.
