We report the discovery of a peculiar X-ray transient,EP240408a,by Einstein Probe （EP） and follow-up studies made with EP,Swift,NICER,GROND,ATCA and other ground-based multiwavelength *** new transient was first detected with Wide-field X-ray Telescope （WXT） on board EP on April 8th,2024,manifested in an intense yet brief X-ray flare lasting for *** flare reached a peak flux of 3.9×10-9erg cm-2s-1in 0.5-4 ke V,～300 times brighter than the underlying X-ray emission detected throughout the *** and more precise follow-up observations by EP/FXT,Swift and NICER confirmed the finding of this new *** X-ray spectrum is non-thermal in 0.5-10 ke V,with a power-law photon index varying *** X-ray light curve shows a plateau lasting for ～4 d,followed by a steep decay till becoming undetectable ～10 d after the initial *** on its temporal property and constraints from previous EP observations,an unusual timescale in the range of 7-23 d is found for EP240408a,which is intermediate between the commonly found fast and long-term *** counterparts have been found in optical and near-infrared,with the earliest observation at 17 h after the initial X-ray detection,suggestive of intrinsically weak emission in these *** demonstrate that the remarkable properties of EP240408a are inconsistent with any of the transient types known so far,by comparison with,in particular,jetted tidal disruption events,gamma-ray bursts,X-ray binaries and fast blue optical *** nature of EP240408a thus remains an *** suggest that EP240408a may represent a new type of transients with intermediate timescales of the order of～10 *** detection and follow-ups of more of such objects are essential for revealing their origin.

Assessing the corrosion protection property of coatings loaded with corrosion inhibitors using the real-time atmospheric corrosion monitoring technique

The atmospheric corrosion monitoring(ACM)technique has been widely employed to track the real-time corrosion behavior of metal ***,limited studies have applied ACM to the corrosion protection properties of organic *** study compared a bare epoxy coating with one containing zinc phosphate corrosion inhibitors,both applied on ACM sensors,to observe their corrosion protection properties over *** with artificial damage via scratches were exposed to immersion and alternating dry and wet environments,which allowed for monitoring galvanic corrosion currents in *** the corrosion tests,the ACM currents of the zinc phosphate/epoxy coating were considerably lower than those of the blank epoxy *** trend in ACM current variations closely matched the results obtained from regular electrochemical tests and surface *** alignment highlights the potential of the ACM technique in evaluating the corrosion protection capabilities of organic *** with the blank epoxy coating,the zinc phosphate/epoxy coating showed much-decreased ACM current values that confirmed the effective inhibition of zinc phosphate against steel corrosion beneath the damaged coating.

Constraints on holographic QCD phase transitions from PTA observations

The underlying physics of QCD phase transition in the early Universe remains largely unknown due to its strong-coupling nature during the quark-gluon plasma/hadron gas transition, yet a holographic model has been proposed to quantitatively fit the lattice QCD data while with its duration of the first-order phase transition(FoPT) left undetermined. At specific baryon chemical potential, the first-order QCD phase transition agrees with the observational constraint of baryon asymmetry. It, therefore, provides a scenario for phase transition gravitational waves(GWs) within the standard model of particle physics. If these background GWs could contribute dominantly to the recently claimed common-spectrum red noise from pulsar timing array(PTA) observations, the duration of this FoPT can be well constrained, and the associated primordial black holes are still allowed by current observations.

On a general theory for compressing process and aeroacoustics:linear analysis

Of the three mutually coupled fundamental processes （shearing, compressing, and thermal） in a general fluid motion, only the general formulation for the compress- ing process and a subprocess of it, the subject of aeroacous- tics, as well as their physical coupling with shearing and thermal processes, have so far not reached a consensus. This situation has caused difficulties for various in-depth complex multiprocess flow diagnosis, optimal configuration design, and flow/noise control. As the first step toward the desired formulation in fully nonlinear regime, this paper employs the operator factorization method to revisit the analytic linear theories of the fundamental processes and their decomposi- tion, especially the further splitting of compressing process into acoustic and entropy modes, developed in 1940s-1980s. The flow treated here is small disturbances of a compressible, viscous, and heat-conducting polytropic gas in an unbounded domain with arbitrary source of mass, external body force, and heat addition. Previous results are thereby revised and extended to a complete and unified theory. The theory pro- vides a necessary basis and valuable guidance for developing corresponding nonlinear theory by clarifying certain basic issues, such as the proper choice of characteristic variables of compressing process and the feature of their governing equations.

Observational connection between local high-temperature phenomena within magnetic clouds and the Sun

Magnetic clouds(MCs) frequently show abnormal high-ionization states of heavy ions. The abnormal high-charge distributions are related to the coronal temperature of their source regions. We examined the plasma and magnetic field data of 74 MCs observed by the Advanced Composition Explorer from February 1998 to December 2008. We determined that 14 of the 74 events showed local high-temperature phenomena. We analyzed the correlation between proton temperature and O7/O6ratio(or high mean Fe charge state ?Fe?) within the local high-temperature regions in the 14 MCs. Results show that proton temperature and O7/O6 ratio(or high mean Fe charge state) had good correlations in nine MCs, but had no evident correlation in the other five MCs. The local high-temperature phenomena within the nine MCs have resulted from the Sun.

Statistical study on the suprathermal electrons properties around dipolarization fronts in Earth's magnetotail

In order to investigate the suprathermal electron flux(>30 ke V) around dipolarization fronts(DFs), we statistically studied the suprathermal electron flux variations and pitch angle distributions of hundreds of earthward propagating DFs observed by THEMIS spacecraft during its tail seasons in years 2008–2009. We focused on the electron flux variations across DFs and electron anisotropies behind DFs. We divided DF into three sectors in the equatorial plane: Dusk, central and dawn sectors. The sectors are defined according to the DF normals with respect to DF's meridian in the equatorial plane(the symmetric line of DF). We found that events with electron flux increases and decreases behind the fronts had no particular dependence on the observation locations. In addition, there was no obvious dependence of electron anisotropy behind DF on the different sectors of DF.

Anti-proton contamination design of the imaging energetic electron spectrometer based on Geant4 simulation

The measurement of energetic particles plays an important role in the space environment monitoring and space weather *** accuracy of the energetic electron measurement is seriously influenced by the proton *** anti-proton contamination design for the sensor of imaging energetic electron spectrometer is introduced in this *** to the electron and proton spectrum on the typical satellite orbits calculated by the radiation belt models,the efficiency of the anti-proton contamination design is estimated by the Geant4 simulation and the design is optimized based on the simulation results.

On the governing equations for the compressing process and its coupling with other processes

As a continuation of a recent linear analysis by Mao et al.(Acta Mech Sin,2010,26:355),in this paper we propose a general theoretical formulation for the compressing process in complex Newtonian fluid flows,which covers gas dynamics,aeroacoustics,nonlinear thermoviscous acoustics,viscous shock layer,etc.,as its special *** principle on which our formulation is based is the maximally natural and dynamic Helmholtz decomposition of the Navier-Stokes equation,along with the kinematic Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity *** central results are the new dilatation equation and velocity-potential equation,which are the counterparts of vorticity transport equation and vector stream-function equation for the shearing process,*** couplings of the compressing process with shearing and thermal processes,including its physical sources,are carefully *** the possible applications and influences of the new formulation are yet to be explored,our preliminary discussion on the pros and cons of previous formulations pertain to acoustic analogy and that on the process splitting and coupling in highly compressible turbulence indicates that at least the formulation can serve as a new frame of reference by which one may gain some additional insight and thereby develop new approaches to the multi-process complex flow problems.

Plasma draining and replenishing near a solar active region inferred from cross-correlation between radiation intensity and Doppler shift

Using observations from the EUV Imaging Spectrometer （EIS） onboard Hinode, we exam the plasma dynamics around the edge of the active region 10977, possibly associated with the source of nascent slow/intermediate solar wind. The correlation between the temporal profiles of the radiation intensity and Doppler shift for each emission line are analyzed. And three small regions with positive correlations for all the five emission lines are selected for a detailed analysis. In this work, Doppler blue （red） shift is defined as negative （positive）. We find that in Region 1, the radiation intensity （Doppler velocity） decreases by about 15% （about 3 km s-X）, and logarithmical differential emission measures （lg（DEMs）） reduces by about 0.06-0.10% at all temperatures, called ＂weak dimming＂, during a 30-min interval. In Region 2 and Region 3, however, the radiation intensity （Doppler velocity） increases by about 15% （about 3 km s-l）, and lg（DEMs） increases by about 0.06%~0.10% at all tempera- tures, called ＂weak brightening＂. Such weak dimming （weak brightening） could reflect a slow draining （replenishing） of plas- ma in the solar wind flux tubes, possibly due to a larger （smaller） outflow flux at high altitude than at low altitude. These sug- gest that the plasma supply could be intermittent with an alternation of draining and replenishing, for which the underlying physical process is yet unknown, at the source region of slow/intermediate solar wind.
