Annular pancreas (AP) is a rare congenital anomaly. Coexisting malignancy has been reported only in a few cases. We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case in the English literature of duodenal adenocarcinoma in a patient with AP. In a 55-year old woman with duodenal outlet stenosis magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography showed an aberrant pancreatic duct encircling the duodenum. Duodenojejunostomy was performed. Eight weeks later she presented with painless jaundice. Duodenopancreatectomy revealed a duodenal adenocarcinoma, surrounded by an incomplete AP. Thus, co-existent malignancy with AP can be present without obstructive jaundice and without being visible through preoperative diagnostics.

Photoproduction of mesons off the deuteron has been investigated at a tagged photon beam of the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS electromagnetic calorimeter for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV. The mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons, neutrons and deuterons. This allow the measurement of meson production reactions off the quasifree nucleons bound in the deutron, as well as the coherent production off the deuteron. The comparison of quasifree proton reactions to free proton reactions can confirm or invalidate possible nuclear effects on the extracted cross section reactions. Furthermore the isospin composition of a resonance can be estimated from the comparison of quasifree proton and neutron reactions. The quasifree photoproduction of the η＇ and π°η mesons off nucleons and the coherent photoproduction of π°η--pairs off the deuteron are discussed.

In the last 10 years the mortality rate of colorectal cancer(CRC)has decreased by more than 20%due to the rising developments in diagnostic techniques and optimization of surgical,neoadjuvant and palliative *** methods currently used in the evaluation of CRC are heterogeneous and can vary within the countries and the *** article aims to discuss in depth currently applied imaging modalities such as virtual computed tomography colonoscopy,endorectal ultrasound,computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)in the diagnosis of *** focus is put on the potential of recent diagnostic developments as diffusion weighted imaging MRI,MRI biomarkers(dynamic enhanced MRI),positron emission tomography with 2-(fluorine-18)-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose(FDG-PET)combined with computed tomography(PET/CT)and new hepatobiliary MRI contrast *** precise role,advantage and disadvantages of these modalities are evaluated controversially in local staging,metastatic spread and treatment monitoring of ***,the authors will touch upon the future perspectives in functional imaging evaluating the role of integrated FDG-PET/CT with perfusion CT,MRI spectroscopy of primary CRC and hepatic transit time analysis using contrast enhanced ultrasound and MRI in the detection of liver *** of these newer imaging techniques may lead to significant improvements in the management of patients with colorectal cancer.

AIM:To analyze the expression of 8 putative cancer stem cell(CSC) markers within colorectal cancer tumor buds and to determine their prognostic impact in patients with this disease. METHODS:Immunohistochemistry was performed on 101 colorectal cancer resections for CK22(to identify tumor buds) as well as CD133,CD166,CD24,CD44s,CD90,EpCAM,ALDH1,and ABCG5,and their expression within tumor buds was evaluated. RESULTS:CD90,CD44s,and CD133 expression in tumor buds was found in less than 5%of all cases. ALDH1,CD24,CD166 were expressed in 16.5%,16.2%,and 34%cases,respectively,while ABCG5 and EpCAM expression was more frequent and found in 35%and 69%of cases,*** the 8 markers studied,EpCAM and ABCG5 positivity in tumor buds were significantly associated with poor prognosis(P=0.023,P=0.038,respectively) in multivariable analysis with pT and pN classificationP=0.048;hazard ratio(HR) :2.64;95%CI:1.0-6.9,for EpCAM and P=0.029;HR:2.22;95%CI:1.0-4.5,for *** survival time was particularly striking for lymph node-negative patients with ABCG5-positive buds(P<0.001) . CONCLUSION:Expression of putative stem cell markers EpCAM and ABCG5 within the tumor buds of colorectal cancer are frequently noted and are associated with poor prognosis.

Quasi-free photoproduction of wmesons off the neutron and off the proton has been studied using a deuterium target and bremsstrahlung photons produced by MAMI-C with incident energies up to 1.5 GeV. The wmesons were detected in coincidence with the recoil nucleons thus a fully exclusive measurement was performed. Preliminary results show a bump-like structure in the excitation function for the neutron close to W ≈ 1675 MeV which is not seen for the proton. Considering the experimental resolution and using a Breit-Wigner fit the width of this structure was approximated below 50 MeV.
