Objective:To observe the effects of vitamin E on post-vitrification preimplantation development,gross morphology as well as mitochondrial distribution and ***:Twenty-four female C57BL/6NTac mice,aged 12-16 weeks,were randomly divided into four *** A did not receive any treatment and served as the control *** B was treated with corn oil stripped of tocopherols and served as the vehicle *** C was treated with 60 mg/kg body weight of tocotrienol-rich-fraction with corn oil stripped of *** D was treated with 60 mg/kg body weight of alpha-tocopherol with corn oil stripped of *** treatments were administered orally for 7 consecutive *** superovulation and mating with fertile males,2-cell stage embryos were harvested for *** vitrification development in vitro,gross morphology and ultrastructure were compared between ***:The number of 2 and 8-cell embryo,and blastocysts in the treatment and control groups were not significantly different(P>0.05).Following vitrification,all 2-cell embryos had equal-sized blastomeres and intact zona *** aggregation toward the perinuclear region was seen in all of the treatment *** groups C and D had vacuolated mitochondria,which was reflected in the trend of preimplantation development ***:Vitamin E supplementation of 60 mg/kg body weight does not improve the viability of healthy embryos according to this *** a result,the most effective dose of vitamin E supplementation may be determined by the initial quality of the embryos.

Previous studies on the relationship between exPosure to televised violence and viewers＇ aggressive behaviours have produced mixed results. Some studies have found significant effect sizes while others have found low and non-significant effect sizes. Television effects scholars have postulated that these mixed results are caused by the inconsistencies of research methodology employed and the inability to control major mediating variables in the studies. The present study is designed with the objectives to overcome these shortcomings. The respondents for this study were 514 students aged between 13 and 18 from 10 schools in the State of Perak, Malaysia. Exploratory data analyses provided evidence that the employed instruments achieved sound psychometric properties. Hypotheses testing suggested that exposure to the Contents of Television Violence （TVCN） did not have a direct relationship with adolescents＇ aggressive behaviours; instead, Contextual Features of Television Violence （TVCX） totally mediated this relationship. Some other mediating variables then mediated totally and some mediated partially the relationship between TVCX and adolescents＇ aggressive behaviours. To conclude, this study provides valuable information for parents, the television industry, and the policy makers in recognizing pro-violent and anti-violent features of television violence programmes for Malaysian school-going adolescents. It also provides a new perspective for future studies of television violence in Malaysia.

Neuroprotective effects of exogenous brain-derived neurotrophic factor on amyloid-beta 1-40-induced retinal degeneration

Amyloid-beta(Aβ)-related alterations,similar to those found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease,have been observed in the retina of patients with *** levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)are believed to be associated with the neurotoxic effects of Aβ*** investigate the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effects of BDNF on Aβ_(1-40)-induced retinal injury in Sprague-Dawley rats,we treated rats by intravitreal administration of phosphate-buffered saline(control),Aβ_(1-40)(5 nM),or Aβ_(1-40)(5 nM)combined with BDNF(1μg/mL).We found that intravitreal administration of Aβ_(1-40)induced retinal ganglion cell ***-Gold staining showed a significantly lower number of retinal ganglion cells in the Aβ_(1-40)group than in the control and BDNF *** the Aβ_(1-40)group,low number of RGCs was associated with increased caspase-3 expression and reduced TrkB and ERK1/2 *** abolished Aβ_(1-40)-induced increase in the expression of caspase-3 at the gene and protein levels in the retina and upregulated TrkB and ERK1/2 *** findings suggest that treatment with BDNF prevents RGC apoptosis induced by Aβ_(1-40)by activating the BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway in rats.

Earnings Management and Fraudulent Financial Reporting： The Malaysian Story

Earnings management research has a long and rich history. The agency conflict, incentives, rationalization, opportunity plus having the capability among the managers to manipulate the financial statements lead them to commit fraud. The loopholes in the standards or the deviation from real operational activities promote this situation to prolong. In relation to this issue, this study examines the earnings management behavior among fraud firms in Malaysia. Further, this study examines the relationship between accruals earnings management as a proxy variable for discretionary accruals and real earnings management as the proxy variable for discretionary cash flow. Sample of 57 alleged fraud firms was selected based on the fraudulent financial reporting offences announced in Bursa Malaysia website. The sample data are collected from public firms which committed fraud from 2001 to 2013. This study found a significant negative relationship between accruals earnings management and real earnings management among the fraud firms in Malaysia suggesting that these firms aggressively manage earnings downwards or upwards essentially to avoid regulators scrutiny apart from aiming to achieve personal incentives. The study significantly finds evidence that fraud firms manage earnings on a sequential basis between accruals earnings management and real earnings management prior to fraud year. The findings indicate that firms opt for real earnings management and make full use of its distinguished features of not easily traceable to continue managing earnings immediately subsequent to fraud year. This study may assist regulators, auditors, and policymakers to curb earnings management patterns that have high likelihood of becoming part of fraud antecedent.

Robust Face Recognition Against Expressions and Partial Occlusions

Facial features under variant-expressions and partial occlusions could have degrading effect on overall face recognition performance. As a solution, we suggest that the contribution of these features on final classification should be determined. In order to represent facial features＇ contribution according to their variations, we propose a feature selection process that describes facial features as local independent component analysis （ICA） features. These local features are acquired using locally lateral subspace （LLS） strategy. Then, through linear discriminant analysis （LDA） we investigate the intraclass and interclass representation of each local ICA feature and express each feature＇s contribution via a weighting process. Using these weights, we define the contribution of each feature at local classifier level. In order to recognize faces under single sample constraint, we implement LLS strategy on locally linear embedding （LLE） along with the proposed feature selection. Additionally, we highlight the efficiency of the implementation of LLS strategy. The overall accuracy achieved by our approach on datasets with different facial expressions and partial occlusions such as AR, JAFFE, FERET and CK% is 90.70%. We present together in this paper survey results on face recognition performance and physiological feature selection performed by human subjects.

Women Political Candidates The Malaysian Media and Their Concerns

Globally, women now play a key role in economic, political, and social cultural affairs, and Malaysia is no exception. Equitable representation by women in the political arena is viewed as crucial in the improvement of women＇s participation in the decision-making process. Nevertheless, though women have made and make great contributions in both the private and public spheres, a review of media＇s coverage of women in the public realm shows a strong tendency to relegate women to mainly domestic affairs. This is consistent with findings from studies on women political candidates＇ image during campaign issues that showed that though women candidates attempted to present themselves in decisive and assertive ways, gender stereotyping was dominant in the media agenda and persistent biases typical of traditional gender representations in the media prevailed. There is very little research in Malaysia on how the media frames women candidates during campaign periods, or what issues are aligned with women candidates. The construction of images of women political candidates, in particular, is often omitted in most research on the General Election. This study analyses how women candidates were covered in selected Malaysian newspapers in the 2008 General Election. The types of issues women political candidates are identified with in the newspapers are also analysed.

The Malaysian government launched the Government Linked Companies Transformation （GLCT） Programme in May 2004, with the aim, amongst others, of ensuring continuous improvement of these firms amidst global trade competitiveness and economic challenges. This paper examines technical efficiency of government linked companies （GLCs） and benchmarks the result with top foreign owned firms listed in Bursa Malaysia. The study employs an unbalanced panel dataset of 31 existing GLCs over a period of nine years （2000-2008） using the stochastic frontier model. The results provide estimates of mean technical efficiency of these firms for the first time, and highlight the variation between the GLCs and foreign owned firms which represent international standard. The findings show mean technical efficiency of GLCs is moving towards the frontier but it still relatively low compared to the foreign firms. The trend declined drastically at the later period showing a wider gap against the benchmark firms. The findings hope to contribute to the growing literature on firms＇ efficiency focusing on privatized firms in developing countries.

In recent years, due to the economic and environmental issues, modern power systems often operate proximately to the technical restraints enlarging the probable level of instability risks. Hence, efficient methods for voltage instability prevention are of great importance to power system companies to avoid the risk of large blackouts. In this paper, an event-driven emergency demand response (EEDR) strategy based on whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is proposed to effectively improve system voltage stability. The main objective of the proposed EEDR approach is to maintain voltage stability margin (VSM) in an acceptable range during emergency situations by driving the operating condition of the power system away from the insecure points. The optimal locations and amounts of load reductions have been determined using WOA algorithm. To test the feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed method, simulation studies are carried out on the IEEE 14-bus and real Algerian 114-bus power systems.

Abstract Implementing the morphing technique on a micro air vehicle （MAV） wing is a very chal- lenging task, due to the MAWs wing size limitation and the complex morphing mechanism. As a result, understanding aerodynamic characteristics and flow configurations, subject to wing structure deformation of a morphing wing MAV has remained obstructed. Thus, this paper presents the investigation of structural deformation, aerodynamics performance and flow formation on a pro- posed twist morphing MAV wing design named perimeter reinforced （PR）-compliant wing. The numerical simulation of two-way fluid structure interaction （FSI） investigation consist of a quasi- static aeroelastic structural analysis coupled with 3D incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes and shear-stress-transport （RANS-SST） solver utilized throughout this study. Verification of numerical method on a rigid rectangular wing achieves a good correlation with available exper- imental results. A comparative aeroelastic study between PR-compliant to PR and rigid wing per- formance is organized to elucidate the morphing wing performances. Structural deformation results show that PR-compliant wing is able to alter the wing＇s geometric twist characteristic, which has directly influenced both the overall aerodynamic performance and flow structure behavior. Despite the superior lift performance result, PR-compliant wing also suffers from massive drag penalty, which has consequently affected the wing efficiency in general. Based on vortices investigation, the results reveal the connection between these aerodynamic performances with vortices formation on PR-comoliant wing.
