A comprehensive study was conducted to differentiate cardiovascular disease (CVD) subjects from non-CVD subjects using short recording electrocardiogram (ECG) of 244 malaysian adults in The malaysianCohort project. An automated peak detection algorithm to detect nine fiducialpoints of electrocardiogram (ECG) was developed. Forty-eight features wereextracted in both time and frequency domains, including statistical featuresobtained from heart rate variability and Poincare plot analysis. These includefive new features derived from spectrum counts of five different frequencyranges. Feature selection was then made based on p-value and correlationmatrix. Selected features were used as input for five classifiers of artificialneural network (ANN), k-nearest neighbors (kNN), support vector machine(SVM), discriminant analysis (DA), and decision tree (DT). Results showedthat six features related to T wave were statistically significant in distinguishingCVD and non-CVD groups. ANN had performed the best with 94.44% specificity and 86.3% accuracy, followed by kNN with 80.56% specificity, 86.49%sensitivity and 83.56% accuracy. The novelties of this study were in providingalternative solutions to detect P-onset, P-offset, T-offset as well as QRS-onsetpoints using discrete wavelet transform method. Additionally, two out of thefive newly proposed spectral features were significant in differentiating bothgroups, at frequency ranges of 1–10 Hz and 5–10 Hz. The prediction outcomeswere also comparable to previous related studies and significantly importantin using ECG to predict cardiac-related events among CVD and non-CVDsubjects in the malaysian population.

Characterization of clarithromycin resistance in malaysian isolates of Helicobacter pylori

AIM:To characterize the types of mutations present in the 23S rRNA genes of malaysian isolates of clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori (H pylori).METHODS: Clarithromycin susceptibility of H pylori isolates was determined by E test. Analyses for point mutations in the domain V of 23S rRNA genes in clarithromycin-resistant and-sensitive strains were performed by sequence analysis of amplified polymerase chain reaction products. Restriction fragment length polymorphism was performed using Bsa-RESULTS: Of 187 isolates from 120 patients, four were resistant to clarithromycin, while 183 were sensitive. The MIC of the resistant strains ranged from 1.5 to 24 μg/mL. Two isolates had an A2142G mutation and another two had A2143G mutations. A T2182C mutation was detected in two out of four clarithromycin-resistant isolates and in 13 of 14 clarithromycin-sensitive isolates. Restriction enzyme analyses with Bsa-CONCLUSION: Clarithromycin resistance is an un-common occurrence among malaysian isolates of H pylori strains and the mutations A2142G and A2143G detected were associated with low-level resistance.

Pro-fertility effect of Ficus carica fruit extract in streptozotocin-induced male rats

Objective:To explore the impact of Ficus carica fruit aqueous extract on fertility parameters in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced male rats.Methods:Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four different groups.All groups except a normal control group were induced with 50 mg/kg of streptozotocin(STZ)intravenously to induce diabetes.A positive control group was treated with an antidiabetic drug,metformin(500 mg/kg)whereas a negative control group remained untreated throughout the experiment.Meanwhile,another diabetic rat group received treatment with 400 mg/kg of aqueous Ficus carica fruit extract.Rats in the treatment group were administered Ficus carica fruit aqueous extract daily through forcefeeding via oral gavage for a 21-day period.Assessments included the sperm quality(count,motility and morphology),histology of the testes,serum testosterone and fasting blood glucose(FBG)level.Results:The FBG level of the Ficus carica-treated rats exhibited a significant decrease compared to the negative control group(P<0.05).Sperm quality analysis also indicated that the aqueous Ficus carica extract had significant positive effects on sperm count and motility(P<0.05).The histology of the testes in Ficus caricatreated rats revealed an improved cell arrangement in the germinal cell layer.Furthermore,serum testosterone level showed an increment in the Ficus carica treatment group in comparison to the negative control group.Conclusions:Our findings provide compelling evidence for the profertility and anti-hyperglycemic properties of aqueous Ficus carica fruit extract in diabetic-induced male rats.

High-throughput sequencing reveals dietary segregation in malaysian babblers

The coexistence of numerous species within a community results from how those species use available resources.Babblers are one of the major groups of malaysian insectivorous birds,which frequently forage in dense vegetation cover and have a high level of sympatry.Therefore,examining the diet,prey selection,and niche segregation of babblers can be challenging.In this study,we used high-throughput sequencing to investigate potential dietary overlap or segregation among 10 babbler species of the 4 genera of the family Pellorneidae and Timaliidae:Pellorneum,Malacopteron,Stachyris,and Cyanoderma in central peninsular malaysia.We tested the hypothesis that trophically similar species may differ in resource use to avoid competitive exclusion.We identified 81 distinct arthropod taxa from fecal samples,belonging to 71 families representing 13 orders,which were predominantly from 16 dipteran,13 lepidopteran,and 10 coleopteran families.Of all the prey taxa consumed,45%were found to be distinct across the 10 babbler species,and<35%were shared simultaneously by≥3 babbler species,indicating minimal dietary overlap.The black-throated babbler Stachyris nigricollis and moustached babbler Malacopteron magnirostre had the most generalist tendencies because they consumed a greater variety of prey taxa.Small dietary overlap values(Ojk)and a relatively wide range of food resources suggest that dietary segregation occurred among the studied babblers.The great diversity of prey consumed revealed the presence of dietary flexibility among the sympatric insectivorous birds,thus reducing any active dietary competition and facilitating the coexistence through niche partitioning.

This review attempts to delineate the effects and roles of fermented foods on allergic responses(AR),specifically from milk,plant,and meat sources.Evidence for AR alleviation and aggravation were noted for many different fermented food groups.Positive outcomes on AR through fermented foods could be linked to microbial hydrolysis of food allergens,improvement in gut microbiota robustness,and modulation of the immune system that promotes a balance between T helper 1(Th1)and Th2 cells.Studies on plant-based,non-protein rich fermented foods tend to show more favourable results compared to those on meat-based or protein-rich group.The usage of specific and known starter cultures are helpful in alleviating AR,as in the case for many yogurt,Kefir or Dahi products.Sufficient fermentation time was also deemed important,exemplified in studies that showed inefficient AR reduction through consumption of fresh cheese.However,formation of new allergens through fermentation of certain meat-based foods,or by using specific fermenting microbes(e.g.Penicillium sp.),is possible.Thus,combination of starter cultures and food substrates must be considered in preventing or eliminating AR from intake of these foods.This review may aid consumers to make informed decision during the consumption of fermented food.

Monitoring an infectious disease early using highly sensitive and non-invasive techniques is critical for human health.Interestingly,the development of surfaceenhanced Raman scattering(SERS)for biological detection ideally fits these medical requirements and is rapidly growing as a powerful diagnostic tool.SERS can enhance the Raman signal of the target molecule by more than 106 after the adsorption of the molecule on the plasmonic nanostructured surface.This review provides an overview of the use of gold and silver nanoparticles in SERS substrate designs,followed by the development of these SERS substrates in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)detection.

The fate of prazosin and levonorgestrel after electrochemical degradation process: Monitoring by-products using LC-TOF/MS

Prazosin（PRZ） and levonorgestrel（LNG） are widely used as an anti-disease drugs due to their biological activity in the human body. The frequent detection of these compounds in water samples requires alternative technologies for the removal of both compounds. After electrochemical degradation of PRZ and LNG, the parent compounds could be completely removed after treatment, but the identification and characterization of by-products are necessary as well. In this study, the effects of NaCl concentration and applied voltage were investigated during the electrochemical degradation process. The results revealed that the increase of NaCl concentration and applied voltage could promote the generation of hypochlorite OCl-and then enhance the degradation of PRZ and LNG. After initial study, 6 V and 0.2 g NaCl were selected for further experiments（96% and 99% removal of PRZ and LNG after 40 min, respectively）. Energy consumption was also evaluated and calculated for PRZ and LNG at 3, 6 and 8 V. Solid phase extraction（SPE） method plays an important role in enhancing the detection limit of by-products. Furthermore, characterization and identification of chlorinated and non-chlorinated by-products were conducted using an accurate liquid chromatography-time of flight/mass spectrometry LC-TOF/MS instrument. The monitoring of products during the electrochemical degradation process was performed at6 V and 0.2 g NaCl in a 50 m L solution. The results indicated that two chlorinated products were formed during the electrochemical process. The toxicity of by-products toward E. coli bacteria was investigated at 37°C and 20 hr incubation time.

Lichens reveal the quality of indoor air in Selangor, malaysia

Background:Indoor air quality(IAQ)is a concern in kindergartens as children spend much of their time there.Yet,there is a shortage of biological indicators needed for assessing IAQ.Thus,this study evaluated IAQ using transplanted lichen Usnea misaminensis as a biological indicator.Methods:Lichen samples,collected from Bukit Larut,Perak,malaysia,were exposed to indoor and outdoor environments in an urban area(Ummi Aiman Kindergarten)and a rural area(Ummi Qaseh Pelangi Kindergarten)for 2 months during August 15 to October 14,2019.The concentrations of 12 selected elements and the vitality of the lichens were then evaluated.Results:Increased concentrations of eleven of the twelve elements deposited in the lichen samples in both urban and rural areas were observed.For both areas,the element concentrations in the samples from the indoor environment was lower than those from the outdoor environment,and those in the rural area were lower than those from in the urban area,suggesting the impacts of traffic emissions.The vitality of the lichens showed no significant change in indoor environment,compared to that in outdoor environment,indicating that even exposed to indoor environment,the lichens remained effective biological indicators as same as they were in the outdoor environment.Conclusions:Lichens are effective biological indicators for both outdoor and indoor environments.Furthermore,outdoor emissions could influence IAQ,which could be problematic in densely populated areas such as kindergartens.Mitigation measures should be taken.

AIM:To report the outcome of Baerveldt glaucoma implant(BGI)with Supramid©ripcord use in neovascular glaucoma(NVG).METHODS:We retrospectively evaluated the surgical outcome of the BGI with Supramid©3/0 ripcord stent in patients with NVG.No tube ligation or venting slits were performed.Supramid was removed after 3mo if the target intraocular pressure(IOP)was not achieved.Surgical success was defined as IOP≤21 mm Hg with(qualified success)or without IOP-lowering medications(complete success).RESULTS:Twenty-six eyes from 24 patients were included in the study.The median duration of follow-up was 4[interquartile range(IQR)=1-5]y,ranging from 0.5 to 5y.IOP decreased by a mean of 24.2 mm Hg(59.7%);from a mean of 40.5±12.6 mm Hg at baseline to 16.3±11.9 mm Hg,P≤0.001.The number of glaucoma medications reduced from a median of 5(IQR=5-6)to 1(IQR=0-2,P≤0.001)at the final follow-up.Overall success rates were 88.0%at 1y,34.8%at 3y,66.7%at 4y,and 50%at 5y.Hypertensive phase(HP)in the first 3mo occurred in 15/26 eyes(57.7%)with a mean IOP of 31.1 mm Hg.CONCLUSION:BGI with Supramid©ripcord stent gives close to 90%of the overall survival rate at the final follow-up without significant early hypotony.However,early HP is still a challenge.

Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis and in vitro antibacterial activity of essential oil from Trigonella foenum-graecum

Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of essential oil from Trigonella foenumgraecum seeds powder,and identify the compounds from the extracted oil.Methods:The seeds powder of Trigonella foenum-graecum was subjected to Clevenger extractor.Seven strains of bacteria were used to test antibacterial activity of the extract.The activity against bacteria was tested by disk diffusion method using Whatman No.1filter paper.Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis was performed with an Agilent7890/5975B-gas chromatography/mass selective detector.Results:The hydrodistillation of seeds powder yielded 0.285%(v/w)of oil.Disk diffusion of the oil showed bactericidal activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria of tasted strains.The inhibition zone ranged from(8±0)mm to(15.0±0.7)mm depending on microbial strains.Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed14 different compounds.The total compounds represented 80.96%of the oil.Conclusions:The antibacterial activity is due to the effects of different biological active compounds present in the extract.Identification of the compounds may help to develop new effective antimicrobial agent(s).Further researches on purification,characterization and toxicology of the active compounds are needed.
