Analysis of the Energy and Environmental Sustainability of a Built Space System: The Case of Patte d’Oie University Campus in Ouagadougou

The aim of this study was to carry out a dynamic simulation of the energy and environmental performance of a built space system, with a view to assessing its energy and environmental class. The use of a simulation and modeling tool, supported by various methodological references, formed the basis of our approach. Adopting a systemic perspective, we described the structural and functional aspects of the systems making up built spaces, as well as the associated energy flows. Our approach was also based on a typology, taking into account typical days, structural and functional configurations at different scales and angles of observation. The analysis tool we developed in Java was applied to the built space system of the Patte d’Oie university campus in Ouagadougou. Annual electricity consumption was measured at 124387.34 kWh, closely aligned with the average annual electricity bill (125224.31 kWh), with a maximum relative deviation of 1%, followed by a carbon emission balance of 58337.66 kg eq CO2 per year. This validation confirmed the effectiveness of our tool. In addition, following the analysis of electricity consumption using our tool, the university campus was classified in energy class B and environmental class C. These results will be based on the emission factors of the energy mix of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) territory, with particular emphasis on Burkina Faso.

Peirce's final statements on the sign were consigned in various ways over a hundred years ago as a form of logic,a branch of the science of enquiry based upon observation.This means inevitably that some parts of the theory will have been contested or considered superseded by more recent pronouncements on cognitive activity in general,both within and without the field of semiotics.Two such areas that have been host to innovative developments concern central preoccupations of the entire Peircean edifice:the basic unit of semiotics and its function,and ways of looking.First,following Thomas Sebeok's pioneering integration of semiotics and the biological theories of Jakob von Uexkull,biosemiotics,it is claimed,has espoused a Peircean approach to the definitions of sign and semiosis.Second,observation involves the relation between the observer and the object observed,and,as a theoretical consequence,the relation between an organism and its environment,von Uexkill's Umwelt.In view of the importance accorded Peircean semiotic theory in this more recent science,the paper compares and contrasts aspects of the later theory with the earlier,and concludes that there are significant theoretical differences between the two conceptions of the sign and its theoretical implications.

Osmotic stress caused by drought or high salt concentrations is a major threat that limits plant development and affect crop productivity.In the context of climate change,understanding the mechanisms by which plants perceive their environment to adapt to their development is a major question.A common feature of plants being exposed to osmotic stress is the accumulation of excessive reactive oxygen species(ROS)(Martinière et al.,2019).ROS can oxidatively damage biological molecules,such as nucleic acids,proteins,and lipids,but also play important signaling functions.To protect from ROS-induced oxidation,living organisms have developed a large panel of enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems to remove ROS and oxidized molecules.

A numerical approach to heat and mass transfer in a large water reservoir is presented. This water reservoir is likened to a parallelepiped reservoir whose vertical and lower walls are adiabatic and impermeable. The equations that govern natural convection in water are solved by the finite volume method and Thomas’salgorithm. The adequacy between the velocity and pressure fields is ensured by the SIMPLE algorithm. We are going to evaluate the water losses by evaporation from three dams in the Nakanbé basin in Burkina Faso for a period of thirty years, that is to say from January 1, 1991, to March 15, 2020. The three dams have a rate of evaporation greater than 40% of the volume of water stored. Indeed the rate of evaporation in each dam increases with the water filling rate in the reservoir: we have observed the following results for each dam in the Nakanbé basin;for the date of 02/27/1988 to 03/13/2020., the Loumbila dam received a total volume of stored water of 22.02 Mm3 and 10.57 Mm3 as the total volume of water evaporated at the same date. At the Ouaga dam (2 + 3), it stored a water volume of 4.06 Mm3 and evaporated 2.03 Mm3 of its storage volume from 01/01/1988 to 05/07/2016. Finally, with regard to the Bagré dam, it stored 745.16 Mm3 of water and 365.13 Mm3 as the volume of water evaporated from 01/01/1993 to 03/31/2020.

Spatio-temporal variability and dynamics in Sahelian agro-pastoral zones make each local situation a special case. These specificities must be considered to guide the dissemination of agricultural options with a view to sustainable development. The territorial scale of municipalities is not sufficient for this necessary contextualization;the scale of the “village terroir” seems to be a better option. This is the hypothesis we put forward in the framework of the Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems program (CRFS), i.e. local context is spatially defined by village terroir. The study is based on data collected through participatory mapping and surveys in “village terroirs” in three regions of Niger (Maradi, Dosso and Tillabéri). Then the links between farm managers and their cultivated land, as well as the spatio-temporal dynamics of local context are analyzed. This study provides evidence of the existence and functional usefulness of the village terroir for farmers, their land management and their activities. It demonstrates the usefulness of contextualizing agricultural options at this scale. Their analysis elucidates the links between “terroirs village” and the specific functioning of the agrosocio-ecosystems acting on each of them, thus laying the systemic and geographical foundations for a model of the spatio- temporal dynamics of “village terroirs”. This initial work has opened up new perspectives in modeling and sustainable development.

This work deals with the modeling of the unsteady Newtonian fluid flow associated with an open cylindrical reservoir.This reservoir presents a hole on the right bottom wall.Fluid volume variation,heat and mass transfers are neglected.The unsteady governing equations are based on the conservation of mass and momentum.A finite volume technique is used to solve the non-dimensional equations and related boundary conditions.The algebraic system of equations resulting from the discretization process are solved by means of the THOMAS algorithm.For pressure-velocity coupling,the SIMPLE algorithm(Semi Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations)is used.Results for laminar flow(Re<1000),including the pressure and velocities profiles as well as the streamlines in the reservoir are presented.Moreover,the effects of the D/d and H0/D ratios and Reynolds number Re on the fluid flow are discussed.It is shown that the velocities and pressure depend essentially on the reservoir size.To validate the model,the present results have been compared with Zhou et al.’s results,Poiseuille’s and Bernoulli’s exact solution.

Between 1865 and 1909 Peirce established over a dozen different sign taxonomies, most of which were established using his system of universal categories, Firstness, Secondness and Thirdness. Of these various systems, that of late 1903 with its universally-known iconindex-symbol division is the one most employed in the analysis of verbal and pictorial signs, as within this division the icon constitutes the sign’s purely formal, qualitative mode of representation showing how a sign might resemble its object. Now, Peirce further analyzed the icon into three more basic modes of qualitative representation, namely the hypoicons, thus enabling 'finer-grained' structural analyses of signs. However, in 1908 his conception of the way signs functioned developed into a very different, universebased, six-stage system, namely semiosis, from which the icon-index-symbol division,together with the hypoicons, was absent. Since, in view of the theoretical foundations distinguishing the three-division system of 1903 from the intention-based hexadic system of 1908, it might be thought that Peirce had introduced an unresolvable inconsistency into the two conceptions of the sign, the paper discusses ways for Peircean semiotics to accommodate, in examples of principally figurative pictorial representation, both the potential for structural analysis offered by hypoiconicity and the intentionality of semiosis. In this latter case, the role of the sign’s immediate object will be shown to be of considerable theoretical interest.

Thioredoxins （TRX） are key components of cellular redox balance, regulating many target proteins through thiol/disulfide exchange reactions. In higher plants, TRX constitute a complex multigenic family whose members have been found in almost all cellular compartments. Although chloroplastic and cytosolic TRX systems have been largely studied, the presence of a nuclear TRX system has been elusive for a long time. Nucleoredoxins （NRX） are potential nuclear TRX found in most eukaryotic organisms. In contrast to mammals, which harbor a unique NRX, angiosperms gen- erally possess multiple NRX organized in three subfamilies. Here, we show thatArabidopsis thaliana has two NRXgenes （AtNRX1 and AtNRX2）, respectively, belonging to subgroups I and III. While NRX1 harbors typical TRX active sites （WCG/ PPC）, NRX2 has atypical active sites （WCRPC and WCPPF）. Nevertheless, both NRXl and NRX2 have disulfide reduction capacities, although NRX1 alone can be reduced by the thioredoxin reductase NTRA. We also show that both NRX1 and NRX2 have a dual nuclear/cytosolic localization. Interestingly, we found that NTRA, previously identified as a cytosolic protein, is also partially localized in the nucleus, suggesting that a complete TRX system is functional in the nucleus. We show that NRX1 is mainly found as a dimer in vivo. nrxl and nrx2 knockout mutant plants exhibit no phenotypic perturbations under standard growth conditions. However, the nrxl mutant shows a reduced pollen fertility phenotype, suggesting a specific role of NRX1 at the haploid phase.
