To develop durable bone healing strategies through improved control of bone repair,it is of critical importance to understand the mechanisms of bone mechanical integrity when in contact with biomaterials and *** mechanical integrity is defined here as the adaptation of structural properties of remodeled bone in regard to an applied mechanical ***,the authors present why future investigations in bone repair and regeneration should emphasize on the matrix surrounding the *** are mechanosensitive cells considered as the orchestrators of bone remodeling,which is the biological process involved in bone *** bone cells are trapped in an interconnected porous network,the lacunocanalicular network,which is embedded in a bone mineralized extracellular *** a consequence of an applied mechanical loading,the bone deformation results in the deformation of this lacunocanalicular network inducing a shift in interstitial fluid pressure and velocity,thus resulting in osteocyte *** material environment surrounding each osteocyte,the so called perilacunar and pericellular matrices properties,define its *** this mechanical stimulation pathway is well known,the laws used to predict bone remodeling are based on strains developing at a tissue scale,suggesting that these strains are related to the shift in fluid pressure and velocity at the lacunocanalicular *** this relationship has been validated through observation in healthy bone,the fluid behavior at the bone-implant interface is more *** presence of the implant modifies fluid behavior,so that for the same strain at a tissue scale,the shift in fluid pressure and velocity will be different than in a healthy bone *** that context,new markers for bone mechanical integrity,considering fluid behavior,have to be *** viewpoint exposed by the authors indicates that the properties of the pericellular and the perilacunar

Ferritin surplus in mouse spleen 14 months after intravenous injection of iron oxide nanoparticles at clinical dose

in this study, we followed the biodegradation of ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles injected intravenously at clinical doses in mice. An advanced fitting procedure for magnetic susceptibility curves and low- temperature hysteresis loops was used to fully characterize the magnetic size distribution as well as the magnetic anisotropy energy of the injected P904 nano- particles （Guerbet Laboratory）. Additional magnetometry measurements and transmission electronic microscopy observations were systematically performed to examine dehydrated samples from the spleen and liver of healthy C57B16 mice after nanoparticle injection, with sacrifice of the mice for up to 14 months. At 3 months after injection, the magnetic properties of the spleen and liver were dramatically different. While the liver showed no magnetic signals other than those also present in the reference species, the spleen showed an increased magnetic signal attributed to ferritin. This surplus of ferritin remained constant up to 14 months after injection.

Saliency-based framework for facial expression recognition

This article proposes a novel framework for the recognition of six universal facial *** framework is based on three sets of features extracted from a face image:entropy,brightness,and local binary ***, saliency maps are obtained using the state-of-the-art saliency detection algorithm "frequency-tuned salient region detection".The idea is to use saliency maps to determine appropriate weights or values for the extracted features (i.e.,brightness and entropy).We have performed a visual experiment to validate the performance of the saliency detection algorithm against the human visual *** movements of 15 subjects were recorded using an eye-tracker in free-viewing conditions while they watched a collection of 54 videos selected from the Cohn-Kanade facial expression *** results of the visual experiment demonstrated that the obtained saliency maps are consistent with the data on human ***,the performance of the proposed framework is demonstrated via satisfactory classification results achieved with the Cohn-Kanade database,FG-NET FEED database, and Dartmouth database of children's faces.

Generation and expansion of laser-induced plasma as a spectroscopic emission source

Laser-induced plasma represents today a widespread spectroscopic emission source. it can be easily generated using compact and reliable nanosecond pulsed laser on a large variety of materials. its application for spectrochemical analysis for example with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy （LiBS） has become so popular that one tends to forget the complex physical and chemical processes leading to its generation and governing its evolution. The purpose of this review article is to summarize the backgrounds necessary to understand and describe the laser-induced plasma from its generation to its expansion into the ambient gas. The objective is not to go into the details of each process; there are numerous specialized papers and books for that in the literature. The goal here is to gather in a same paper the essential understanding elements needed to describe laser-induced plasma as results from a complex process. These elements can be dispersed in several related but independent fields such as laser-matter interaction, laser ablation of material, optical and thermo-dynamic properties of hot and ionized gas, or plasma propagation in a background gas. We believe that presenting the ensemble of understanding elements of laser-induced plasma in a comprehensive way and in limited pages of this paper will be helpful for further development and optimized use of the LiBS technique. Experimental results obtained in our laboratory are used to illustrate the studied physical processes each time such illustration becomes possible and helpful.

ZnO nanoparticles as a luminescent down-shifting layer for photosensitive devices

The optical properties ofZnO nanoparticles （NPs） fabricated by three different methods were studied by the UV-excited continuous wave photoluminescence in order to estimate their down-shifting （DS） efficiency. Such a luminescent layer modifies the incident solar radiation via emitting wavelengths better matching the spectral response of the underlying photosensitive device （photodiode）, thereby increasing its efficiency. Some of the studied ZnO NPs were subsequently deposited on the front side of commercial silicon photodiodes and the external quantum efficiency （EQE） characteristics of the final devices were measured. Through comparison of the photodiode＇s EQE characteristics before and after the deposition of the ZnO NPs layer, it was concluded that for the photodiode with a low UV sensitivity （about 8%）, the ZnO luminescent layer produces a down-shifting effect and the EQE in the UV and blue range improves by 16.6%, while for the photodiodes with a higher initial UV sensitivity （about 50%）, the EQE in this range decreases with the ZnO layer thickness, due to the effects competing with DS, like the diminution of the ZnO layer transmittance and an increasing diffusion.

More than half a century after its first formulation by Reiss, Frisch and Lebowitz in 1959, scaled particle theory(SPT) has proven its immense usefulness and has become one of the most successful theories in liquid physics. in recent years, we have strived to extend SPT to fluids confined in a variety of random porous matrices. in this article, we present a timely review of these developments. We have endeavored to present a formulation that is pedagogically more accessible than those presented in various original papers, and we hope this benefits newcomers in their research work. We also use more consistent notations for different cases. in addition, we discuss issues that have been scarcely considered in the literature, e.g., the one-fluid structure of SPT due to the isomorphism between the equation of state for a multicomponent fluid and that for a one-component fluid or the pure-confinement scaling relation that provides a connection between a confined and a bulk fluid.

The shoot apical meristem （SAM）, which produces all the aerial parts of the plant, plays a major role in the establish- ment of plant architecture. in many higher plants, the SAM has a stereotypic organization in zones with different func- tions. At the summit of the dome-shaped meristem is a popu- lation of stem cells （called the central zone）, required for meristem maintenance. Part of the cells produced by the central zone will enter a differentiation pathway and their descendants will serve as founders for the stems and lateral organs at the meristem periphery （or peripheral zone）. Direct Ni Electroless Metallization of Poly(etherimide) without Using Palladium as a Catalyst

Nickel or copper electroless metallization of polymers needs the grafting of a catalyst (palladium in the Pd(0) oxidation state) on the substrate surface to be coated. Our previous works on this topic [1-5] have allowed to develop a simple, tin-free method to attach Pd(+2) species from a palladium chloride (PdCl2) solution on any insulating surface and subsequently to reduce them, in the wet way, into the Pd(0) oxidation state. This Pd(0) state of the catalyst allows an instantaneous initiation of the Ni or Cu deposit by immersion in a plating bath. As palladium is an expensive chemical, it appears interesting to replace it by Ni(0) or Cu(0) species which are catalysts of their own ion reduction. Concerning the direct Ni electroless plating, the polymer surface (Pi) was made catalytic for the electroless process by deposition (spin- coating or dipping) of an ultra-thin film of an organic nickel salt in an alcoholic solution. The chemical reduction of this salt, checked by XPS, was performed by chemical or photochemical ways and by plasma. Under these conditions, the initiation, by autocatalysis, of the Ni film deposition in an industrial plating bath was immediate i.e. without any initiation time. The film obtained was homogeneous, dense, bright, well-adhering up to thicknesses reaching
