Process conditions for preparing well-defined nano- and microparticles as delivery systems of alkyl gallates

dextran-covered poly(D,L-lactide) (PLA) nano-and microparticles were prepared using an emulsion/solvent evaporation (or diffusion) process for the encapsulation of alkyl gallates (AGs).In the first step,a solution of PLA and AG in ethyl acetate was emulsified to give an aqueous phase containing a hydrophobically modified dextran,which acted as a *** second step involved solvent evaporation or *** emulsification conditions were varied,which allowed for the preparation of nanoand microparticle suspensions covering a wide range of surface-average particle diameters from 0.1 μm (sonication) to 500 μm (stirring with a magnetic bar),with narrow and reproducible size *** microfluidic emulsification in a flow-focusing system led to well-defined microparticles,in the 10-50 μm *** loaded with octyl gallate (OG) and nonyl gallate (NG) were obtained using the three processes,and we showed that the encapsulation efficiency of OG and NG varied significantly depending on the emulsification *** effect of particle size on the mechanism of in vitro release of encapsulated AGs was *** kinetics of release were controlled either by Fickian diffusion within the solid core or swelling and hydrolytic degradation of the PLA matrix,depending on the pH of the external medium.

Vetiver Grass and Micropollutant Leaching Through Structured Soil Columns Under Outdoor Conditions

In Burkina Faso, significant amounts of endosulfan are applied to cotton fields; in addition, urban vegetable agriculture is often characterised by high fertiliser inputs, such as urban solid wastes containing heavy metals(e.g., Cu and Cd). Thus, the relevance of surrounding cotton and urban vegetable plots with vetiver(Vetiveria zizanioides) hedges to reduce environmental pollution by micropollutants was investigated using a leaching experiment, with outdoor lysimeters filled with two representative agricultural soils of Burkina Faso: Vertisol and Lixisol. After 6 months, little Cu was found in the leachates(dency to remain at the soil surface. despite leachate and bromide recoveries being greater in soils planted with vetiver grass than in the bare soils, smaller amounts of endosulfan and Cd were found in the effluents from the planted soils(0.01% to 0.70% of the applied amount) than in those from the bare soils(0.01% to 1.48% of the applied amount), in agreement with their adsorption coefficients. These results may also be explained by a greater degradation of endosulfan in planted soils compared to bare soils and the absorption of Cd by vetiver. Thus, vetiver may decrease the risk of groundwater contamination,especially for Cd and endosulfan, which are more mobile than Cu. In addition, despite the smaller amounts of endosulfan and Cd measured in the Vertisol leachates(0.01% and 0.04% of the applied amount, respectively) compared to the Lixisol leachates, vetiver was more effective in decreasing the leaching of micropollutants if planted on Lixisol rather than on Vertisol. Further field monitoring is necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of vetiver under the climatic conditions of Burkina Faso.

Surface morphology-optical properties relationship in thermochromic VO_(2) thin films obtained by air oxidation of vanadium nitride

In this paper,vanadium nitride(VN)thin films have been deposited on Al substrates by reactive magnetron *** VO_(2) films have been obtained by air oxidation of VN samples performed at three temperatures(450,525 and 550℃)at various durations(lower than 50 min).X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrometry of the VN oxidized films indicate that VO_(2) and V2O5 are the only phases produced during the oxidation *** dioxide is the first oxide *** coexists with VN in a long period at 450℃ or suddenly disappears at 525 and 550℃.Whatever the temperature,V2O5 is exclusively detected after the total oxidation of *** oxide is detrimental to the thermochromic performance of *** emissivity-switching properties of the oxidized films were analyzed by infrared camera in the 7.5e13 mm *** comparison among all the samples exhibiting a thermochromic behavior shows that the maximum emissivity switch is independent of the oxidation temperature and the surface morphology of the *** results could open a new strategy in the investigation of VN oxidation as a method to obtain VO_(2),along with an insight into the correlation between surface morphology and optical properties.

A Multi-Level Selective Maintenance Strategy Combined to Data Mining Approach for Multi-Component System Subject to Propagated Failures

In several industrial fields like air transport,energy industry and military domain,maintenance actions are carried out during downtimes in order to maintain the reliability and availability of production *** such a circumstance,selective maintenance strategy is considered the reliable solution for selecting the faulty components to achieve the next mission without *** this paper,a novel multi-level decision making approach based on data mining techniques is investigated to determine an optimal selective maintenance *** the first-level,the age acceleration factor and its impact on the component nominal age are used to establish the local *** first decision making employed K-means clustering algorithm that exploited the historical maintenance *** on the first-level intervention plan,the remaining-levels identify the stochastic dependence among components by relying upon Apriori association rules algorithm,which allows to discover of the failure occurrence *** addition,at each decision making level,an optimization model combined to a set of exclusion rules are called to supply the optimal selective maintenance plan within a reasonable time,minimizing the total maintenance cost under a required reliability *** illustrate the robustness of the proposed strategy,numerical examples and a FMS real study case have been solved.

We are concerned, in a static regime, with a three-dimensional bounded domain of certain an imaging approach of the locations in electromagnetic imperfections. This approach is related to Electrical Impedance Tomography and makes use of a new perturbation formula in the electric fields. We present two localization procedures, from a Current Pro- jection method that deals with the single imperfection context and an inverse Fourier process that is devoted to multiple imperfections configurations. These procedures extend those that were described in our previous work, since operating for a broader class of settings. Namely, the localization is additionally performed for certain purely electric imperfections, as established from numerical simulations.

To investigate the effect of AlsMn4Gd phase on microstructural and mechanical properties of Mg-Al-Ca magnesium alloy,two Mg-2.5AbCa and Mg-2.5Al2Ca-0.1 Al8Mn4Gd alloys were designed and compared in this *** results show that a small amount of Gd can significantly refine a-Mg grains and change the morphology of AUCa ***,the formed Al8Mn4Gd phase could serve as a heterogeneous nucleation site for the a-Mg grains and AbCa ***,the introduction of Gd not only optimized the mechanical properties of Mg-Al-Ca alloy,but also facilitated the thermal deformation(such as hot rolling).
